Watching Flames Dance Fearless In the Rain
Gaze lost in the lithe belly of the flame
a fire so fearless, spirit feathers untamed
playful pixy portal
dancing in the wet eyes of the rain
leafy flood-water clotting
backing-up manhole digestive drain
aqua-slug tires mired motorists
splash to slow stop
puddles spray curbside wave-crash erupts
Something undeniably holy
in the smokey smell of charcoal smolder
side-by-side with the seasonal cleanse
of virginal spring-cool-cloud-water
earthen life-rich aroma
christening scent
of a new-born baby god
the element's vital spontaneity
giving birth to an everlasting
moment's cloud burst
eternal birth-marks
nursing endurance
vigor and vitality
What sick spirals serpentine smoke
distract the eye from the sparkless flame?
Where rests the hand-print of featherlight flint
belonging to that ancient faceless fire starter?
In the spring the maple's sop
such sweet seasonal tears
royal-crown leaves born
only to be sacrificed
to the perennial-god
of the passing year
Incensed essence of dead-matter
long locked
now giving rise to the rite
of the skies sublime light
Sun begins to peek from behind
sheer-ebony nimbus-stratus-sheet
as life's fleet falling liquid seeds
continue to permeate
fertile mother's moisten womb
Oh eternal flame
without spark smoke
or spoken name
the sky cries for your body
of fallen scattered ashes
conscious cosmic smoke cloud
inert ever burning inferno
eruption forever frozen in the wind
what rainy ruins
must we dig to reach
your ever-stable
fireside-soothing core?
