The beginning of spring

It’s as if the last repose of winter isn’t spent,
as if it carries on without end
and the veldt is stripped bare,
the winter grass burnt to ashes
but still some flowering buds declare
that sap is already in their branches, in their veins
and everything else is waiting on the spring rains.
