Imprisoned

I look from behind these iron bars
and no jailor do I see.
And yet it's impossible to escape
for my jailor is only me.

It is I who imprison all I am
or all I could ever be.
No one else is responsible
for why I am not free.

Sweet freedom is a distant dream,
a dream I've had for years.
And yet the shackles of my mind
bridle me with fears.

Stripped away from my memories
are light-hearted days and nights.
Only to be repaced in life
by agonizing sights.

Oh to be rid of these troublesome things
would tear my prison apart.
So I could walk free upon this earth
and be happy in my heart.
