I Could Not Stay
I could not stay a young sweet girl
for things don't stay the same.
Life's changes, cruel and sobering
Entered and with it came
Tired eyes from too much seeing
And brows that are not smooth,
Tired bones from too much being
and troubles that do not soothe.
But I forgive what came to me
And refuse to ask the why.
For might not the answer be so upsetting
as to make me start to cry.
Then sadness will increase the lines
that become permanent on my face,
Constant reminders as I see my image
that these lines I can't erase.
So I cannot stay a young sweet girl
But I can remember her once in a while.
And when the memories rush back in
I think on it and smile.
