A Helping Hand

Give me a hand to help me up.
I'm tired of being down.
Give me a hand to help me up.
I'd like to live uptown.

All I have known since my very first breath
is pain and misery.
I'm so weary, people of the world.
How come you can't see?

I've never worn a fancy gown
like the girls that live up-town.
All I've had are hand me downs
that are part of my shantytown.

Please give me a hand to help me up.
I fear that I may die
not ever knowing what it's like
or ever understanding why?
