O Unicorn!

Ye lovely horse
with fore-head horn –
O unicorn!
Ye folk-lore beast,
From heaven born:
Where hast thou gone?

With lovely mane,
Ye came in dreams,
O unicorn!
To true virgin,
In moonlit beams,
To sleep upon!

To dance awhile
In pastures green,
O unicorn!
With feet agile,
And cloud-white sheen,
In early morn!

When earth was new,
And men were good,
O unicorn;
Then leaves had dew,
And forests, wood;
And fields had corn!

By fair maidens,
And lovely dames,
Ye were allured;
And turning tame,
Ye played a game,
O unicorn!

O beauteous beast,
Mystical one,
O unicorn!
Ye did adorn
The ages past –
Have ye now ceased?
