Jesus Just Left Chicago

(billy f. gibbons/joe michael hill/frank lee beard)jesus left chicago
And he headed down to new orleans
Jesus left chicago
And he headed down to new orleans
Hey hey
Workin from one end to the other
And all points in between
Took a drive through mississippi
Muddy water turned to wine
Took a drive through mississippi
Muddy water turned to wine
Hey hey
Went out to california
Through the points and through the pines
You might not see him in person
But hell see you just the same
Might not see him in person
But hell see you just the same
Hey hey
Dont have to worry about nothin
cuz takin care of business is his name
Jesus left chicago
And he headed down to new orleans
Jesus left chicago
And he headed down to new orleans
Hey hey
Workin from one end to the other
And all points in between
Thanks everyone!
This is a very cool room, I dont know how many of you
Were here last time, but...its good to be back
Whats that?
Sounds good, mike!! sounds great, mike!!!
Thank you man! thank you.. ok.... mike?
He likes the way it sounds!
I know!

A Poem For Myself

I was born in Mississippi;
I walked barefooted thru the mud.
Born black in Mississippi,
Walked barefooted thru the mud.
But, when I reached the age of twelve
I left that place for good.
My daddy chopped cotton
And he drank his liquor straight.
Said my daddy chopped cotton
And he drank his liquor straight.
When I left that Sunday morning
He was leaning on the barnyard gate.
Left my mama standing
With the sun shining in her eyes.
Left her standing in the yard
With the sun shining in her eyes.
And I headed North
As straight as the Wild Goose Flies,
I been to Detroit & Chicago
Been to New York city too.
I been to Detroit & Chicago
Been to New York city too.
Said I done strolled all those funky avenues
I'm still the same old black boy with the same old blues.
Going back to Mississippi
This time to stay for good
Going back to Mississippi
This time to stay for good-
Gonna be free in Mississippi
Or dead in the Mississippi mud.

Do You Know What Is Means To Miss New Orleans

Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans
And miss it each night and day
I know Im not wrong this feeling's gettin' stronger
The longer, I stay away
Miss them moss covered vines the tall sugar pines
Where mockin' birds used to sing
And I'd like to see that lazy Mississippi hurryin' into spring
The moonlight on the bayou a creole tune that fills the air
I dream about magnolias in bloom and I'm wishin' I was there
Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans
When that's where you left your heart
And there's one thing more I miss the one I care for
More than I miss New Orleans
The moonlight on the bayou a creole tune that fills the air
I dream about magnolias in bloom and I'm wishin' I was there
Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans
When that's where you left your heart

Take Me Back To Chicago

Take me back to chicago
Lay my soul to rest
Where my life was free and easy
Remember me at my best
Take me back to chicago
Where music was all I had
I tried to be good as I could
And sometimes that made me sad
Take me back to chicago, to chicago
Why dont you take me back
Take me back, take me back
To chicago
I still dream of the lake of peacefulness
The warm summer breeze
cause my life was so much simpler then
Street corners and tastee freeze
Take me back to chicago
cause hustlins not my style
L.a. was just a bit too hard
I wish I could be a child
Livin back in chicago, in chicago
Why dont you take me back
Take me back, take me back
To chicago
Take me back to chicago
Lay my soul to rest
Where my life was free and easy
Remember me at my best
Take me back to chicago
cause hustlins not my style
L.a. was just a bit too hard

Looking For Love

Well Ive been to a lot of places and Ive seen a lot of things
But I aint never found the girl of my dreams
Been coast to coast and back again but Im as lonely as Ive been
New york, frisco too, old chicago, even st.lou
Been to dallas and new orleans
But I aint never found the girl of my dreams
Well I dont know where and where and dont know when
This lookin for love will ever end, but Ill keep searchin everywhere
Mmm to find a love thatll really care
New york, frisco too, old chicago, even st.lou
Been to dallas and new orleans
But I aint never found the girl of my dreams
Well I rambled around and I never met the one true love you cant forget
So I travel on from town to town, oh, until my sweetheart can be found

Take Your Whiskey Home

Well, my baby, she dont want me around.
She said shes tired of watchin me fall down.
She wants the good life, only the best.
But I like that bottle better than the rest.
And she said: I think that youre headed for a whole lot of trouble.
Well, I think that youre headed for a whole lot of trouble.
Well, I think that youre headed for a whole lot of trouble.
If you take your whiskey...
Well, that liquor in the nighttime leaves strange memories.
Seems a lifetime since yesterday.
Come the daybreak, come the morrow,
That womans waited up all night for me again.
She said: well, I think that youre headed for a whole lot of trouble.
Yeah, I think that youre headed for a whole lot of trouble.
Yeah, you know that youre headed for a lot of trouble.
If you take your whiskey home.
Some goes to women, some goes to jesus,
Though Im absolutely certain boths all right.
But it takes me at least halfway to the label
fore I can even make it through the night.
Well, I think that youre headed for a whole lot of trouble.
Yeah, I think that youre headed for a whole lot of trouble.
Yeah, you know that youre headed for a lot of trouble.
If you take your whiskey home.

Muddy Mississippi

Chorus:
I can hardly see my face in the waters of the muddy mississippi
But I can see the shadows of the cotton wood standing over me
The morning sun would find me
Swinging from the rope thats hanging free
And I drop in to the waters
And go swimming in the muddy mississippi
A boy came to the delta
And we would swing together from that tree
I could see my dreams in his eyes
As he held on to me
Swinging in the sunlight
Loving in the shadows
Wild and free
And I made him promise he would take me
Down to new orleans
Bright lights of the city made my red dress and shoes look brand new
While he worked the night shift
I turned on and I turned loose
I lost my pride I lost my man
I did things a girl like me shouldnt do
Now I cant face this living
With the swelling signs of new life
Showing through
I can hardly see my face in the waters of the muddy mississippi
But I can see the shadows of the cotton wood standing over me
The morning sun would find me
Hanging from the rope thats swinging free
And Ill swing for the last time over the waters
Of the muddy mississippi
Yeah the muddy mississippi

I miss it, each night and day
The longer I stay away
Miss the moist covered vines

And I like to see the lazy mississippi

Chicago, chicago, that toddlin town
Chicago, chicago, Ill show you around (youll stay around)
Bet your bottom dollar you lose the blues in
Chicago, chicago, the folks who visit
All wanna settle down. (all wanna settle down in my hometown)
On state street, that great street, I just wanna say,
They do things they dont do on broadway,
Youll have the time, the time of your life
Bring all your friends, all your kids and your wife to
Chicago, chicago my hometown. (hey now baby--)

Youll have the time, the time of your life
Bring all your friends, all your kids and your wife to

Only In Chicago

I went back
Yes I went back to find out
What we did wrong and
I went back
Yes I went back to see just
How we could feel so good
In Chicago
We seemed to have it all
It was real
It was love
I went back
And I sat by the lake
And looked at the stars
And oh I swear
I remember how much we laughed
And I loved you so
In Chicago
I know we had it all
It was real
It was love
Only in Chicago
Love is in the air
In Chicago
There's a magic there
In Chicago
Our Chicago
Baby, you and I
We tried to take it with us
But you can't go back
'Cause I went back to find out
What we did wrong and
Now I see
That it wasn't just you
It wasn't just me
It was Chicago
But I'm still in love with you
Only you
Only you
But only in Chicago
REPEAT CHORUS

Planet Of New Orleans

Standin on the corner
Of toulouse and dauphine
Waitin on marie-ondine
Im tryin to place a tune
Under a louisiana moonbeam
On the planet of new orleans
In a bar they call the saturn
And in her eyes of green
And somethin that she said in a dream
Inside of my suit I got my mojo root
And a true love figurine
For the planet of new orleans
New orleans - the other planet
With other life upon it
And everythin thats shakin in between
If you should ever land upon it
You better know whats on it
The planet of new orleans
Now Im tryin to find my way
Through the rain and the steam
Im lookin straight ahead through the screen
And then I heard her say
Somethin in the limousine
bout takin a ride across the planet of new orleans
If she was an ace
And I was just a jack
And the cards were never seen
We could have been the king and queen
But she took me back to her courtyard
Where magnolia perfume screams
Behind the gates and the granite
Of the planet of new orleans

My Kind Of Town

My kind of town, Chicago is
My kind of town, Chicago is
My kind of people too
People who,smile at you
And each time I leave, Chicago is
Tugging my sleave, Chicago is
One town that won't let you down
It's my kind of town
My kind of town, Chicago is
My kind of town, Chicago is
My kind of razzmatazz
And it has, all that jazz
And each time I rome, Chicago is
Calling me home, Chicago is
One town that won't let you down
It's my kind of town
Chicago is
The Wrigley Building, Chicago is
The Union stock yard, Chicago is
One town that won't let you down
It's my

Chicago Streets

So good to be home
and out of the heat.
All those excess people reminded I'm alone
as I explored the busy Chicago streets.

So good to be mild
and not full of heat.
All those old buildings reminded I'm only a child
as I explored the ancient Chicago streets.

So good to be recognized
and not sweating in the heat.
All those dollars spent reminded me of the love I'm still denied.
as I explored the poor Chicago streets.

So good to be back from running away
and back from the heavy, humid heat.
All of the luggage and vacations reminded me problems come to stay.
as I left, for a long time, those Chicago streets.

Three Corn Patches

(words & music by leiber - stoller)
I said three corn patches about four cotton fields away
I said three corn patches about four cotton fields away
Lives the prettiest girl in the whole darn u.s.a.
I said a
Shes got big brown eyes and long black wavy hair, mmm
Shes got big brown eyes and long black wavy hair
Shes so beautiful, people it dont seem fair
Well Ive been to chicago, been to new orleans
Yes, Ive been to chicago, been to new orleans
But Id rather see my baby workin in her old blue jeans
I said three corn patches
About four cotton fields away
I said three corn patches
About four cotton fields away
Lives the prettiest girl in the whole darn u.s.a.
I said a
She keeps a big bull dog out in the yard all night
She keeps a big bull dog out in the yard all night
And it barks like a bear oh, but he dont bite
Yeah,
I said three corn patches
About four cotton fields away
I said three corn patches
About four cotton fields away
Lives the prettiest girl in the whole darn u.s.a.
I said a

My Head Souns Like That

The metal jangles as the key turns
Unlock the door, wipe my feet clean
Oh my head sounds like that
The oil is spitting in the saucepan
I squeeze this sponge and let the cat out
Oh my head sounds like that
Oh my head
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
The waters dripping in the hallway
The guy next door, he knocks his wall down
Oh my head sounds like that
The knife it scrapes across the burnt brown toast
The freight train rumbles pass my window
Oh my head sounds like that
Oh my head
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
Around the axis we all spin
To determine whats left out and whats left in
Whats left out and whats left in
Whats left out and whats left in
Whos left out and whos left in
Whos left in
The moments come and go like water
I try to hold them but theyre fading
Oh my head sounds like that
Oh my head
Oh oh oh

Orleans

My sister was named Orleans
After the town where she was born,
Dear Orleans, my best friend,
A little girl with hazel eyes,
Dear Orleans, please don’t cry,
Hold my hand and stay with me,
And never say good bye.

My sister grew up beautiful
Like so many little girls do,
My sister Orleans, late one night,
Danced with a man named Lou.
Dear Orleans, please come home,
Mama and daddy and I
Are waiting here for you.

My sister never came home that night,
And daddy called the law,
Mama paced the floor till dawn
And wrung her hands till they were raw,
Dear Orleans, we waited till
The police came to our house
And told us what they saw.

My sister had been ravished bad
And left to die alone.
The man called Lou had fled the town
And by morning he was gone.
Dear Orleans, thank God you lived,
Though you’ll never be the same,
At least you’re safe at home.

My sister Orleans grew a life
Conceived through hate and fear;
We tried to hide it from the town
But soon it became clear.
Dear Orleans, hid her shame
As day by day she swelled
And the baby’s birth drew near.

My sister thrashed and cried in bed
On the day the sun was high;
She begged for mercy and release
Till we heard the infant cry
Dear Orleans, reached out for him
I wrapped him in a towel
And watched her baby die.

New Orleans has to learn to live with water rather than in fear of water, and we need a master plan that shows us how to do this. It's so critical that we send a signal to everyone in the country that we're serious about rebuilding New Orleans.
