I killed them one by one
methodically
never looking in their eyes

The hireling
Applications are being waited on
for the position of mercenary
or now rather security consultant
to with and for the Americans
help to make
Afghanistan and Iraq tame.
Jannie from bush war
and Angola fame
applies to go
and he is selected
with a group of special soldiers
that stand separate from the others smoking
who can parachute
and take life
in diverse ways
and in secret he gets on a plane
that stands on Waterkloof air force base
and takes off in a northeastern direction.
The pay is good
and US-dollar strong
and it’s a fixed job
that he can find nowhere in his own country
and for a while
Jannie is very happy
for being able to give money to Sannie
to buy food
and small Jan can get rugby boots.
His blue eyes cuts
day after day through people
to try and identify terrorists
but how do you really know
who is carrying a bomb
and who wants to die for his faith?
There are many things
that the Americans learn from him
and he from them,
but while on leave
he is in the bath on the third storey
of a hotel in Baghdad
and an Arabic woman and child
walks into the lobby
and she smiles shyly beyond her veil
and a bomb explodes
that nearly kills him
and cuts his legs off

On the day that yet another car bomb exploded
in Baghdad, I forgot to buy shaving cream and
had to go back to the shop, there is weariness
about bad news from Iraq. I also forgot to buy
a litre of milk and a goat cheese.
Four thousand US troops killed, which, after
five years of war, as an amazing small number;
but then, this is a war where civilians get to do
the dying.Six hundred thousand or near a million
dead, no one knows or cares, but it might end up
as being as great a crime as the holocaust:
Was it five or six million Jews who perished?
This is a number that concerns deniers greatly,
who are of the opinion that only about 2oo Jews
died, regrettably of typhus, on a train journey
between Poland and Russia.
What we do know, is that the holocaust was
worst criminal act known to man; it is therefore
an eternal shame that Israel uses this tragedy to
silence us when they continue to unlawfully take
more of Palestinian land
It is much easier to take up Tibet’s cause, isn’t
strange that the riots it happens know as
the Olympic in Beijing looms? Forget Iraq and
the Gaza strip, where our hands are bloodied;
this new cause will make us feel morally superior

The Man Who Talks To God
For one of self proclaimed devotion his behaviour seems odd
And he is known by many as the man who talks to God
His so called war on terrorism has left thousands of people dead
Of his wars in Afghanistan and Iraq so much written and said.
George W always talks to God when in his church he pray
God told him to bomb Afghanistan and George W did obey
And then he told him to invade Iraq and dropp bombs on Baghdad
His must be a judgemental God to decide good from bad.
The privileged one who talks to God he fights to cling to power
His God cares for the noxious weed and poisons the peace flower
His God who seems so righteous for the poor doesn't show much sympathy
And for the people who believe in other Gods he lacks in empathy.
He is the one who talks to God one of his God's chosen few
He wages war in his God's name and to his God he is true
When his God tells him to go to war he always does obey
