Pediatric E.R, R.I.P 11/5/09 (Volunteer work can be tough)
I watched…
A heartbreaking scene today
But I couldn’t take
my eyes away
I watched …
I feel shamed to say
I watched
a little girl die today
I watched …
an anguished EMT cry
I watched nurses drawn faces
I watched a little girl die

Just outside the doors
The Frantic CPR applied
With frantic, futile force
I watched
Her mother fearfully enter the room
To be seated by her side
To share in her impending doom

A strange, unsettling scene
Upturned faces as if in prayer
hopefully watch the vitals screen

On a bed
That I had newly made

Stranger In A Strange Land
Stranger, stranger in a stange land.
He looked at me as one who should run.
We asked him to smile for a photograph.
Waited a while to see if we could make him laugh.
So did I seek for a cigarette.
His smiling face I cant forget.
It looked like it crossed the street.
He said, Ill wait here.
I wish you were here.

What's That
Before it came inside
I had watched it from my kitchen window,
watched it swell like a new balloon,
watched it slump and then divide,
like something I know I know -
a broken pear or two halves of the moon,
or round white plates floating nowhere
or fat hands waving in the summer air
until they fold together like a fist or a knee.
After that it came to my door. Now it lives here.
And of course: it is a soft sound, soft as a seal's ear
that was caught between a shape and a shape and then returned to me.
You know how parents call
from sweet beaches anywhere,
come in come in
,
and how you sank under water to put out
the sound, or how one of them touched in the hall
at night: the rustle and the skin
you couldn't know, but heard, the stout
slap of tides and the dog snoring. It's here
now, caught back from time in my adult year -
the image we did forget: the cranking shells on our feet
or the swing of the spoon in soup. It is real
as splinters stuck in your ear. The noise we steal
is half a bell. And outside cars whisk by on the suburban street
and are there and are true.
What else is this, this intricate shape of air?

Dancing On Ice
The compere and his co-host,
Resplendent, caused a stir!
Watched on TV from coast-to-coast
With all male eyes on HER!
She outshone all the stars above,
Gold sequins here and there
And suddenly I fell in love,
All I could do was stare...
I thought that I'd gone deaf a while,
Each time she said a word,
For all she had to do was smile
And nothing then was heard!
I turned the volume up a bit,
To hear her once again,
Returning to my chair to sit
And ogle like most men...
And all at once I heard a sigh
That started from my heart
And watched her till she said goodbye
And sadly saw her part...
Since I'd recorded everything,
I watched her smile once more...
And simply with the joys of Spring,
I heard myself say, 'PHWOAR! '
I've not said that a long, long time!
Yet now it was deserved!
You see, to me, she was sublime
