The Last Straw
(fish, steve rothery, mark kelly, pete trewavas, ian mosley)
Hotel hobbies padding dawns hollow corridors
A typewriter cackles out a stream of memories
Drying out a conscience, evicting a nightmare
Opening the doors for the dreams to come home
We live out lives in private shells
Ignore our senses and fool ourselves
To thinking that out there theres someone else cares
Someone to answer all our prayers, all our prayers...
Are we too far gone, are we so irresponsible
Have we lost our balls, or do we just not care
Were terminal cases that keep talking medicine
Pretending the end isnt quite that near
We make futile gestures, act to the cameras
With our made up faces and pr smiles
And when the angel comes down, down to deliver us
Well find out that after all, were only men of straw
But everything is still the same
Passing the time passing the blame
We carry on in the same old way
Well find out we left it too late one day to say what we meant to say
Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the water
Those problems seem to arise the ones you never really thought of
The feeling you get is similar to something like drowning
Out of your mind, youre out of your depth, you should have taken soundings
Clutching at straws, were clutching at straws, were clutching at straws
And if you ever come across us dont give us your sympathy
You can buy us a drink and just shake our hands
And youll recognise by the reflection in our eyes that deep down inside were all one and the same
Were clutching at straws
Were still drowning
Clutching at straws
Were still drowning, yeah clutching at straws
Im still drowning
Were clutching at straws
Im still drowning

Sugar Mice
(fish, steve rothery, mark kelly, pete trewavas, ian mosley)
I was flicking through the channels on the tv
On a sunday in milwaukee in the rain
Trying to piece together conversations
Trying to find out where to lay the blame
But when it comes right down to it theres no use trying to pretend
For when it gets right down to it theres no one here thats left to blame
Blame it on me, you can blame it on me
Were just sugar mice in the rain
I heard sinatra calling me through the floorboards
Where you pay a quarter for a partnership in rhyme
To the jukebox crying in the corner
While the waitress is counting out the time
For when it comes right down to it theres no use trying to pretend
For when it gets right down to it theres no one really left to blame
Blame it on me, you can blame it on me
Were just sugar mice in the rain
cause I know what I feel, know what I want I know what I am
Daddy took a raincheck
Cos I know what I want, know what I feel I know what I need
Daddy took a raincheck, your daddy took a raincheck
Aint no one in here thats left to blame but me
Blame it on me, blame it on me
Well the toughest thing that I ever did was talk to the kids on the phone
When I heard them asking questions I knew that that you were all alone
Cant you understand that the government left me out of work
I just couldnt stand the looks on their faces saying, what a jerk
So if you want my address its number one at the end of the bar
Where I sit with the broken angels clutching at straws and nursing our scars
Blame it on me, blame it on me
Sugar mice in the rain
Your daddy took a raincheck, your daddy took a raincheck

Lies On The Floor
Making up stories
saying this or that,
reaching for hollow straws
in a hollow straw hat.
Shooting through the straw,
with All your lies,
making your hollow straw pie.
Try and keep all your lying
straws straight,
what lying straw is first
what lying straw is number eight.
Top them all off
with a fake letter,
only you and I know better,
That’s it’s all bogus
and totally a scam,
especially when your talking ham to spam.
Play your way with all your spam
that you baked,
but here’s your big mistake,
something you can’t take,
because I have a crazy 8,
changing the suit for which I take,
and bend your straws and make them break.
FoR your fake straw hat will be no more,
for you’re found out as a lying spam boar.

That Time Of The Night
(derek dick, steve rothery, mark kelly, pete trewavas, ian mosley)
At that time of the night
When streetlights throw crosses through window frames
Paranoia roams where the shadows reign
Oh, at that time of the night
At that time of the night
Your senses tangled in some new perfume
Criticism triggers of a loaded room
Oh, at that time of the night
So if you ask me
How do I fell inside
I could honestly tell you
Weve been taken on a very long ride
And if my owners let me
Have some free time some day
With all good intention
I would probably run away
Clutching the short straw
At that time of the night
When questions rally in an open mind
Summon all your answers with an ice cube chime
At that time of the night
At that time of the night
Pretend youre off the hook with the telephone
Your confidence wounded in a free fire zone
Oh, at that time of the night
So if you ask me
Where do I go from here
My next destination
Even isnt really that clear
So if you join me
And get on your knees and prey
Ill show you salvation
Well take the alternative way
Clutching the short straw
If I had enough money
Id buy a round for that boy over-there
A companion in my madness in the mirror
The one with the silvery hair
And if some kind soul
Could please pick up my tab
And while theyre at it
If they could pick up my broken heart
Warm wet circles...

Judgement Of Heaven
A lonely cry for help reaching out for help to anyone
A silent prayer to God to help you on your way
Ive been depressed so long
Its hard to remember when I was happy
Ive felt like suicide a dozen times or more
But thats the easy way, thats the selfish way
The hardest part is to get on with your life
Youre searching in the dark
Clutching at straws to find a way
You take the tarot cards and throw them to the wind
Your questions your beliefs,
Your inner thoughts, your whole existence
And if there is a God then answer if you will
And tell me of my fate, tell me of my place
Tell me if Ill ever rest in peace
If you could live your life again
Would you change a thing or leave all the same
If you had the chance again
Would you change a thing at all
When you look back at your past
Can you say that you are proud of what weve done
Are there times when you believe
That the right you thought was wrong
All of my life I have believed
Judgement of heaven is waiting for me

Hidden Years
I know youre here
You wont come out
Below the water line
Now wheres my glove to keep the germs at bay
So safe up here
My air is clean
Recycle
Rarify
Down in the street
Deep breathe your life away
Relive the hidden years
Wont clutch at straws again - whiter than white in the home!
One midas touch and zeros grow
Guilt edge and two points down
In touch but out of mind in pleasure dome
Through hungry years and scraping skies
Collided with the stars
I framed your face
You lit the silver hughes!
Relive the hidden years (in vain)
Wont clutch at straws again - whiter than white in the home!
Relive the hidden years (in vain)
Wont clutch at straws again - whiter than white in the home!

River Of Tears
Its three miles to the river
That would carry me away,
And two miles to the dusty street
That I saw you on today.
Its four miles to my lonely room
Where I will hide my face,
And about half a mile to the downtown bar
That I ran from in disgrace.
Lord, how long have I got to keep on running,
Seven hours, seven days or seven years?
All I know is, since youve been gone
I feel like Im drowning in a river,
Drowning in a river of tears.
Drowning in a river.
Feel like Im drowning,
Drowning in a river.
In three more days, Ill leave this town
And disappear without a trace.
A year from now, maybe settle down
Where no one knows my face.
I wish that I could hold you
One more time to ease the pain,
But my times run out and I got to go,
Got to run away again.
Still I catch myself thinking,
One day Ill find my way back here.
Youll save me from drowning,
Drowning in a river,
Drowning in a river of tears.
Drowning in a river.
Feels like Im drowning,
Drowning in the river.
Lord, how long must this go on?
Drowning in a river,
Drowning in a river of tears.

Nest
it smells stale like fish rotting in the drain
a mishmash of of straws from streets here and there
put together in a hurry the fasion of a frantic chase for love
and feathers a latter addition, they stuck onto the straws
starched by leftovers of food, of love, affection and faeces
here and there, little furry feathers orchestrate a dance
heralding a dream that has grown and flown away

You and I should get away for awhile
I just want to be alone with your smile
Buy some candy and cigarettes and we'll get in my car
We'll blast the stereo and we'll drive to Madagascar
Because when I'm with you there's nothing I wouldn't do
I just want to be your only one
I'm grasping out at straws thinking back to what I saw
That night on the floor when we were all alone
My love life was getting so bland
There are only so many ways I can make love with my hand
Sometimes it makes me want to laugh
Sometimes I want to take my toaster in the bath
Because when I'm with you there's nothing I wouldn't do
I just want to be your only one
I'm grasping out at straws thinking back to what I saw
That night on the floor when we were all alone
Who's gonna be the odd man out?
I don't want to be the odd man out
Is this going to be the end
Or are you going to be my new girlfriend?

Deep Water
Is it a crime for me to be feeling this way
I'm going out of my mind and there's
no change from a runaway love
Is it a dream (is it a dream)
That I'm throwing in the wishing well
I'm losing control my body and soul
(body and soul)Standing here waiting
for a train that may never come
I saw the signs I read the books
I should of had a second look
ut you caught me dreaming
nd there were times you'd come around a
we'd agreed to just be friends tell
me who it's fooling oooo
Deep water I'm drowning
Deep water I'm slowly drowning in deeper
Deep water I'm drowning
Deep water I'm slowly drowning in deeper
what do I say(what can I say)
where words have failed me before
what do i do when i'm feeling so blue
and there's no place for me to run and hide
I saw the sun inside your smile and wished
for then just awhile cause boy you caught
me dreaming a giant step into the dark
and we through caution to the wind tell
me who we're fooling oooo
Deep water I'm drowning
deep water i'm slowly drowning in deeper
Deep water i'm drowning
deep water i'm slowly drowning deeper
i'm drowning
deeper deeper i'm drowning in deeper
oh i saw the signs i read the book
i should have had a second look
cause boy you caught me dreaming
and there are times youd come around
and we'd agreed to just be friends tell me who it's fooling
Deep water i'm drowning
deep water i'm slowly drowning in deeper
deep water i'm drowning
deep water i'm slowly drowning in deeper
deeper deeper deeper
i'm drowning in deeper
(drowning in drowning in drowning in)
deeper deeper deeper
so deep is the water
(drowning in drowning in drowning in)

Keeping Our Love Alive
Cmon make my day
Thats what she said, pointing her gun
Your lucks on the run
Some fast talkin, quick step walkin, roadblocks ahead
You may say Im guilty but I try
Keepin our love alive
The judge and jury
The accused in fury--clutching at straws
Its all for the cause
Circumstances blew your chances
Its understood
You mat say Im guilty but I tried
Keepin our love alive, keepin our love alive
Treadin through the grapevine
Sendin you a lifeline
Dont let it go
You may say Im guilty but I tried
Keepin our love alive
Keepin our love alive

A Mystic Paradox
Not superficial,
real inside,
something was ruined.
Tonight I will walk out in dark
beyond me.
Creased,
under tyranny of love,
wanted to unwrite the script
in the stampede of sins.
Impeachment
throws up the shock syndrome.
No wish to swim back.
Drowning, clutching my truth.
A mystic paradox?
Million faces of yes or no.
Wrinkles are getting larger.

Endless Stream Of Tears
I cry awake at night and hug my pillow
And pray that I will die before I wake
No such luck
Another day of cryin
Dont know how much more my old heart can break
Flooded with these memories and emotions
The tears like rain keep on falling down
They say that Ill forget
But my face is just as wet
As it was the day you left this town
Chorus:
Drowning in this endless, endless
Drowning in an endless stream of tears
Its relentless and Im defenseless
Drowning in an endless stream of tears
I cant believe that I can talk about it
I never thought Id live to see this day
But a broken heart wont kill you
You just want to die
But you have to go on livin anyway
I feel it through and through
And Ive never been so blue
And I cried a river over you
Repeat chorus
Oh, Im drowning in this endless, endless
Drowning in this endless, endless
Drowning in this endless, endless
Drowning in this endless stream of tears

Make me a deal and make it straight
All signed and sealed, ill take it
To robert e. lee ill show it
I hope and pray he dont blow it cause
Weve been around a long time just try try try tryin to
Make the big time...
Take me on a roller coaster
Take me for an airplane ride
Take me for a six days wonder but dont you
Dont you throw my pride aside besides
Whats real and make believe
Baby janes in acapulco we are flyin down to rio
Throw me a line im sinking fast
Clutching at straws cant make it
Havana sound were trying hard edge the hipster jiving
Last picture shows down the drive-in
Youre so sheer youre so chic
Teenage rebel of the week
Flavours of the mountain steamline
Midnight blue casino floors
Dance the cha-cha through till sunrise
Open up exclusive doors oh wow!
Just like flamingos look the same
So me and you, just we two got to search for something new
Far beyond the pale horizon
Some place near the desert strand
Where my studebaker takes me
Thats where ill make my stand but wait
Cant you see that holzer mane?
Whats her name virginia plain

Straws
STRAWS
Straws sometimes break the camel's back -
Intent or accident, who knows?
Beyond the pale none may job back, -
Yet who resists his inner woes?
Life's seldom seen as white or black,
Life needs nuances, change of clothes,
Expressed emotions' open flows.

Drowning
Everything is so complex
Everyday is like a test full of opsticals
That almost seem impossible
And I'm thinking just another breath not a minute left.
How long have I been drinking?
Pass the glass pint hit the flash light now break it.
People say I'm a star but I still think ill never make it.
And I'm thinking just another prayer not a second left.
I feel there's something missing
Sometimes I hate that chaos surrounds me when all the answers I see go around me.
Am I drowning?
Am I fading away?
OR am I living up to all your dreams that made me this way?
Am I drowning?
Am I drowning?
Am I drowning?
Am I drowning?
I've been to hell and back looking for the answers to life.
Looking at myself trying to get things right.
And I'm feeling just another breath not a minute left.
I feel the darkness lifting.
There was a time
That I questioned if Id ever be alright.
Running getting high staying trapped by sleepless nights.
And I'm thinking just another breath not a minute left.
I feel there's something missing.
I'm running from myself and all the things I don't like.
Living every night like it's the last night.
And I'm thinking just another prayer not a second left.
I need to stop resisting.
Sometimes I hate that chaos surrounds me when all the answers I see go around me.
Am I drowning?
Am I fading away?
OR am I living up to all your dreams that made me this way?
Am I drowning?
Am I drowning?
Am I drowning?
Am I drowning?
Drowning in the drama lost in the lies trapped by the currents of life caught in the rip tides.
Drowning in the drama lost in the lies trapped by the currents of life caught in the rip tides.
Drowning in the drama lost in the lies trapped by the currents of life caught in the rip tides.
Drowning in the drama lost in the lies trapped by the currents of life caught in the rip tides.
Am I drowning?
Am I drowning?
Am I drowning?
Am I drowning?
Sometimes I hate that chaos surrounds me when all the answers I see go around me.
Am I drowning?
Am I fading away?
OR am I living up to all your dreams that made me this way?
Am I drowning?
Am I drowning?
Am I drowning?
Am I drowning?
Drowning in the drama lost in the lies trapped by the currents of life caught in the rip tides.
Drowning in the drama lost in the lies trapped by the currents of life caught in the rip tides.

Contaminated Minds
Some people search for the holy grail
Run round in circles and chase their own tails
But you cant really blame them for clutching at straws
For weeding some truth in our morals and laws
Some people say that revolution will descend
On this madness end this confusion
But weve all heard the privileged boast and preach
And the promised land we want is still out of reach
I once knew a man who wore self-righteousness
Like a medal on his inflated chest
He hated all people for breaking his rules
Looked down with distaste on the cowards and fools
He lived like a king in his castle of stone
And sneered at the man who worked hard for his home
He knew all the right words and who to defend
And would be with conviction the working mans friend
Chorus
Contaminated minds play judge and jury too
But contaminated minds are blind to truth
Contaminated minds speak with loudest voice
But not everybody has the luxury of choice

Charley's Death
The wind got up moaning, and blew to a breeze;
I sat with my face closely pressed on the pane;
In a minute or two it began to rain,
And put out the sunset-fire in the trees.
In the clouds' black faces broke out dismay
That ran of a sudden up half the sky,
And the team, cutting ruts in the grass, went by,
Heavy and dripping with sweet wet hay.
Clutching the straws out and knitting his brow,
Walked Arthur beside it, unsteady of limb;
I stood up in wonder, for, following him,
Charley was used to be;--where was he now?
"'Tis like him," I said, "to be working thus late!"--
I said it, but did not believe it was so;
He could not have staid in the meadow to mow,
With rain coming down at so dismal a rate.
"He's bringing the cows home."--I choked at that lie:
They were huddled close by in a tumult and fret,
Some pawing the dry dust up out of the wet,
Some looking afield with their heads lifted high.
O'er the run, o'er the hilltop, and on through the gloom
My vision ran quick as the lightning could dart;
All at once the blood shocked and stood still in my heart;--
He was coming as never till then he had come!
Borne 'twixt our four work-hands, I saw through the fall
Of the rain, and the shadows so thick and so dim,
They had taken their coats off and spread them on him,
And that he was lying out straight,--that was all!

Grape, Grape Joy
I am a small and lonely grape,
Clutching to the vine,
Waiting for the day when Ill become my saviors wine!
Oh, wouldnt french cuisine just yearn it,
Ive eternity to ferment,
But knowing me Id end up ripple
In a cellar of cheblis.
Are you a small and lonely grape
Clutching to the vine,
Waiting for the day when youll become your saviors wine?
Dont give up hope ye heavy laden,
You dont want to be a raisin;
Theres a grape grape joy in jesus,
In the vineyard of the lord.
