Tramp On The Street

(grady cole & hazel cole, kinky friedman)
Only a tramp was lazarus sad fate
He who lay down by the rich man s gate.
He begged for some crumbs from the rich man to eat,
He was only a tramp found dead on the street.
If jesus he comes on and knocks on your door
Will he find love and kindness or hatred and war ?
Will you turn him away with nothing to eat ?
Will you leave him to die like a tramp on the street ?
Poor jewboy you ve rambled this cold world alone
Just a-prayin that heaven is no place like home.
May the good lord he bless you and keep you in health
And remember that jesus was a jewboy hisself.

Lazarus And A Rich Man

What meaning can you find
in a Rich Man and Lazarus
both remembered lived died?

The rich man had already received
his reward in wealth luxury lived
could not forsake now for heaven.

Jesus allowed sickness
death to claim Lazarus
proved from death Lazarus

could be resurrected
from the memorial tomb
after dead four days

Jesus had told his disciples
outspokenly “Lazarus has died,
and I rejoice on your account

that I was not there, in
order for YOU to believe.” John 11: 13-15.
Jesus had said to his disciples

“This sickness is not
with death as its object,
but for the glory of God,

in order that the Son of God
may be glorified through it.” John 11: 4.
Jesus raised Lazarus

from the dead
by the will of God
who sent forth Jesus. John 11: 41-42.

Jesus has said
“I am the resurrection
and the life. He that

exercises faith in me, even
though he dies,
will come to life; ” John 11: 25.

when we encounter
poor suffering people
we are encountering

people who are enduring
the same life that Jesus lived;
in pure ransom sacrifice died

for; and as for me I have chosen;
better a tin shack in heaven
than a mansion in hell for eternity.

The Two Samaritans and the Tramp

A TRAMP was trampin’ on the road—
The afternoon was warm an’ muggy—
And by-and-by he chanced to meet
A parsin ridin’ in a buggy.
Said he: “As follerers ov the Loard,
To do good offices we oughter!”
An’ from a water-bag he poured,
An’ guv the tramp, a drink er water.

The parsin he went rattlin’ ’ome
To ware his fam-i-lee was thrivin’,
The tramp went on until he met
A bullick-driver, bullick drivin’—
“It’s bilin’ ’ot,” the driver sed
As soon’s the dirty tramp drawed nearer,
And from a little keg he poured,
And giv the tramp a pint of beer—“ah!”

(P.S.—The “ah” is meant to stand for the tramp a-drinking ov it.)

I ain’t agin the temperance cause,
Nor yet no advocate ov drinkin’—
I only tells the yarn because—
Well, at the time it somehow seemed
Ter kind ov set me thinkin’.

The Tramp

He sleeps alone in the damp
And rests his head upon a door
The only bed he knows is the floor,
The tramp
Turned up collar and worn out shoes
He doesnt care cause he hasnt got nothing to lose
He sleeps alone in the damp
And rests his head upon a door
The only bed he knows is the floor,
The tramp
No companion to take him home
His only friends are the kind that just leave him alone
No one knows just how lonely his life has been
In a world that lives in a dream
He sleeps alone in the damp
And rests his head upon a door
The only bed he knows is the floor,
The tramp

Better Do It Well

(gary moffet/myles goodwyn)
Published by goody two tunes, inc. - bmi
She was a lady, sitting alone
Played out of line
She does a number, out on the floor
She is so fine
Get it up, get it up
Drinkin my papaya
Good to see things my way baby
Whatd you say, hey
Tramp of the neighborhood
Not bad looking and feels so good
I knew the lady had something to tell
If youre gonna love me better do it well
Come on babe, show me a sign
I wanna know
One says right, one says left
I dont know which way to go
Ooh, you got love, you got love
Turn on the lights
Wont you send it my way
Yeah, come on, well do it tonight
Tramp of the neighborhood
Not bad looking and feels so good
I knew the lady had something to tell
If youre gonna love me better do it well
Do you love her, I dont know
Well do you need her, I think so
Do you, do you have to act so blind
Girl you got my love and then you leave me behind
Tramp of the neighborhood
Not bad looking and feels so good
I knew the lady had something to tell
If youre gonna love me better do it well
If youre gonna love me better do it well
If youre gonna love me better do it well
Tramp of the neighborhood
Not bad looking and feels so good
I knew the lady had something to tell
If youre gonna love me better do it well

The Army of the Rear

I listened through the music and the sounds of revelry,
And all the hollow noises of that year of Jubilee;
I heard beyond the music and beyond the local cheer,
The steady tramp of thousands that were marching in the rear.
Tramp! tramp! tramp!
They seem to shake the air,
Those never-ceasing footsteps of the outcasts in the rear.
I heard defiance ringing from the men of rags and dirt,
I heard wan woman singing that sad “Song of the Shirt”,
And o’er the sounds of menace and moaning low and drear,
I heard the steady tramping of their feet along the rear.
Tramp! tramp! tramp!
Vibrating in the air —
They’re swelling fast, those footsteps of the Army of the Rear!

I hate the wrongs I read about, I hate the wrongs I see!
The tramping of that army sounds as music unto me!
A music that is terrible, that frights the anxious ear,
Is beaten from the weary feet that tramp along the rear.
Tramp! tramp! tramp!
In dogged, grim despair —
They have a goal, those footsteps of the Army of the Rear!

I looked upon the nobles, with their lineage so old;
I looked upon their mansions, on their acres and their gold,
I saw their women radiant in jewelled robes appear,
And then I joined the army of the outcasts in the rear.
Tramp! tramp! tramp!
We’ll show what Want can dare,
My brothers and my sisters of the Army of the Rear!

I looked upon the mass of poor, in filthy alleys pent;
And on rich men’s Edens, that are built on grinding rent;
I looked o’er London’s miles of slums — I saw the horrors there,
And swore to die a soldier of the Army of the Rear.
Tramp! tramp! tramp!
I’ve sworn to do and dare,
I’ve sworn to die a soldier of the Army of the Rear!

“They’re brutes,” so say the wealthy, “and by steel must be dismayed” —
Be brutes among us, nobles, they are brutes that ye have made;
We want what God hath given us, we want our portion here,
And that is why we’re marching — and we’ll march beyond the rear!
Tramp! tramp! tramp!
Awake and have a care,
Ye proud and haughty spurners of the wretches in the rear.

We’ll nurse our wrongs to strengthen us, our hate that it may grow,
For, outcast from society, society’s our foe.
Beware! who grind out human flesh, for human life is dear!
There’s menace in the marching of the Army of the Rear.
Tramp! tramp! tramp!
There’s danger in despair,
There’s danger in the marching of the Army of the Rear!

The wealthy care not for our wants, nor for the pangs we feel;
Our hands have clutched in vain for bread, and now they clutch for steel!
Come, men of rags and hunger, come! There’s work for heroes here!
There’s room still in the vanguard of the Army of the Rear!
Tramp! tramp! tramp!
O men of want and care!
There’s glory in the vanguard of the Army of the Rear!

The Lady Is A Tramp

Ive wined and dined on mulligan stew, and never wished for turkey
As I hitched and hiked and grifted too, from maine to albuquerque
Alas, I missed the beaux arts ball, and what is twice as sad
I was never at a party where they honored noel ca-ad (coward)
But social circles spin too fast for me
My hobohemia is the place to be
I get too hungry, for dinner at eight
I like the theater, but never come late
I never bother, with people I hate
Thats why the lady is a tramp
I dont like crap games, with barons and earls
Wont go to harlem, in ermine and pearls
Wont dish the dirt, with the rest of the girls
Thats why the lady is a tramp
I like the free, fresh wind in her hair
Life without care
Im broke, its ok
Hate california, its cold and its damp
Thats why the lady is a tramp
I go to coney, the beach is devine
I go to ballgames, the bleachers are fine
I find a winchell, and read every line
Thats why the lady is a tramp
I like a prizefight, that isnt a fake
I love the rowing, on central park lake
I go to opera and stay wide awake
Thats why the lady is a tramp
I like the green grass under my shoes
What can I lose, Im flat, thats that
Im alone when I lower my lamp
Thats why the lady is a tramp
Transcribed by todd peach

A few additional verses from the ella in berlin cd:
Girls get massages, they cry and they moan
Tell slender ella to leave me alone
Im not so hot, but my shape is my own
Thats why the lady is a tramp
The food at the kopensky is perfect, no doubt
I couldnt tell you wha the ritz is about
Drop a nickle in, and coffee comes out
Thats why the lady is a tramp
Like the sweet, fresh, rain in my face
Diamonds and lace, no got, so what? !
For frank sinatra, I whistle and stamp
Thats why the lady is a tramp
Shes a hobo
Shes a scamp
Shes a no-good kinda tramp
Thats why the lady is a tramp

Why A Lifetime Of Suffering?

If you ask me why
good people must

endure a life of suffering
now I could make reply

after so many decades living
with many answers differing

I could truthfully say
in life to all eventually

comes a time of testing
causes for stumbling

Jesus said to his disciples
“It is unavoidable that causes:
for stumbling should come.

Nevertheless, woe to the one
through whom they come!
It would be of more advantage
to him if a millstone were

suspended from his neck
and he were thrown into the sea
than for him to stumble one
of these little ones.” Luke 17: 1-2.

Now hear a parable on suffering
be warned learn the moral lesson

for it seems to me all famed worlds
wealthy; are rich for but brief seasons

listen to these wise words told by Jesus
the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus.

“Jesus said, “There was a certain rich man
who was splendidly clothed in purple and
fine linen and who lived each day in luxury.

At his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus
who was covered with sores. As Lazarus lay
there longing for scraps from the rich man’s

table, the dogs would come and lick his open
sores. “Finally, the poor man died and was
carried by the angels to be with Abraham.

The rich man also died and was buried, and
his soul went to the place of the dead. There,
in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance

with Lazarus at his side. “The rich man shouted,
‘Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus
over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and

cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these flames.’
(Now I do not know why angels were sent carried
Lazarus to be with Abraham surely a great reward.)

“But Abraham said to him, ‘Son, remember that
during your lifetime you had everything you wanted,
and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being

comforted, and you are in anguish. And besides,
there is a great chasm separating us. No one can
cross over to you from here, and no one can cross

over to us from there.’ (A great chasm is wages sin.)
“Then the rich man said, ‘Please, Father Abraham,
at least send him to my father’s home. For I have

five brothers, and I want him to warn them so they
don’t end up in this place of torment.’ (A warning.)
“But Abraham said, ‘Moses and the prophets have

warned them. Your brothers can read what
they wrote.’ “The rich man replied, ‘No, Father
Abraham! But if someone is sent to them from

the dead, then they will repent of their sins and
turn to God.’ “But Abraham said, ‘If they won’t
listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t listen

even if someone rises from the dead.’” This is truth,
the rich, the arrogant, are their own gods in life, to
none will they listen, deaf to the pleas of the poor.

“I have seen everything during my lifetime
of futility; there is a righteous man who perishes
in his righteousness and there is a wicked man

who prolongs his life in his wickedness.” Ecclesiastes 7: 15.
A verse proven ever more true in an age of scientific
triumph; life prolonging medical marvels.

But truth never changed, man chose to defy God
and embrace sin. If God simply wanted 'puppets'
to control, God would have made us all puppets.

Instead God created us with free choice, laugh, insult
God; call all religion myth, fairy tales; but remember,
life choices made will seal your fate for all eternity.

King Bibler's Army

It was ten years ago when the belle of the village
Gave here her hand to the young millionaire,
Every toungue (even those of the bells in the steeple)
Saying "Joy to the Heav'n-blest pair!"
She was sweet as the rosebud that blooms in the valley;
He was manly, and noble, and brave.
Tell me, where are they now?
In the sad-eyed procession,
Marching, down, down, down to the grave.

Hark! hark! a pageant passes
(tramp, tramp, tramp, tramp):
I hear the tread of moving masses
(tramp, tramp, tramp, tramp)
O Heaven save our young men --
'tis King Bibler's Army,
Marching down, down, down to the grave.

At the head of the boat are the dashing lieutenants
Who entice young recruits into line;
Arm in arm, three abreast, they keep step with the music,
Bearing goblets of blood red wine.
In the rear, by and by, we shall see them together,
As they stagger along on the pave,
With their wives and their children, a rag-robed procession,
Marching, down, down, down to the grave.

From the front to the rear is the rule of promotion
In the army King Bibler commands;
And the pension is pov'rty, disease and dishonor,
With a forfeit of home and lands.
So the friend that was treated to cordials and juleps,
Will be treated at last like a slave,
As he fags at the end of the chaingang procession,
Marching, down, down, down to the grave.

Would you fill up the ranks? let your town send its quota:
Seventy thousand recruits must be found,
For the gravediggers reckon they bury that number
Every year in the cold, cold ground.
Yet the rest hobble on, and the colors they carry,
Though in tatters, triumphantly wave,
For they vanquish themselves in this madman's procession,
Marching, down, down, down to the grave.

Ride em Jewboy

(kinky friedman)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh,
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.
Ride, ride em jewboy,
Ride em all around the old corral.
Oh, im, Im with you boy
If Ive got to ride six million miles.
Now the smokes from camps are rising
See the helpless creatures on their way.
Well, old pal, its still surprising
How far you can go before you stay.
Dont you let the morning blind ya
When on your sleeve you wore the yeller star.
Old memories still live behind ya,
Cant you see by your outfit who you are.
How long will you be driven relentless round the world,
The blood in the rhythm of the soul.
Wild ponies all your dreams were broken,
Rounded up and made to move along.
The loneliness which cant be spoken
Just swings a rope and rides inside a song.
Dead limbs play with ringless fingers
The melody which burns you deep inside.
Oh, how the song becomes the singers,
May peace be ever with you as you ride.
In the window candles glowing
Remind you that today you are a child,
The road ahead, forever rolling,
And anything worth cryin can be smiled.
So ride, ride em jewboy,
Ride em all around the old corral.
Im, Im with you boy
If Ive got to ride six million miles.

Healing Scriptures

There are many healing scriptures
The Holy Bible shares...
When we let God's wisdom teach us,
There's power in our prayers!
If not, then Jesus would've said,
We needn't pray at all,
Yet for this cause, Lord Jesus bled
And in His Name, we call...

Why leave it till we're desperate
When we can ask God now,
When there's no more need to bear it,
Any longer anyhow?
Yes, rich or poor, we can be healed,
Regardless of our wealth...
Let's pray God's love will be revealed
When we're restored to health!

God's miracles have not run out...
His love can never end...
As if to stop each stumbling doubt,
He sent Christ as our friend...
Lord Jesus went to Calvary...
God raised Him from the dead!
God proved through Him, we've been set free,
To live new lives instead...

So pray believing, in His Name,
Thanksgiving in your soul...
When healing comes, no more the same,
As Jesus takes control...
Then testify, proclaim His worth,
Praise God for what He's done!
Such that God's glory fills the Earth
With Good News through His Son...

High On Jesus

(kinky friedman)
Walking down division street
I happened on to meet
A stranger with a package in his hand.
He said, mister, if you follow me
Rainbow colors you will see,
Ill take your head into the promised land.
friend, I dont need your stuff,
My jesus is enough.
You see them colors bright,
Why cant you see the light ?
Lets get high on jesus, high on jesus,
I believe that he was here in town.
Flying high on jesus, high on jesus,
Im so high Im never coming down.
One man buys a nickel sack,
Another buys a cadillac,
They both think they will drive their cares away.
But neither thinks to lend a hand
To help his struggling fellow man,
Theyd better buy their tickets now for judgment day.
Oh, friend, lets try to score
For peace and not for war,
For love and not for hate
Before it gets too late.
Lets get high on jesus, high on jesus,
Aint you ever heard the nashville sound ?
Flying high on jesus, high on jesus,
I guess, my friend, the lord still gets around.
An angry mob confronted me
By the university,
down with this and down with that they cried.
A burning bottle in his hand,
A long-haired youth screamed, come on, man,
The conscience of america has died!
friend, I dont get my kicks
Starting fires and throwing bricks,
I pray someday you find
The gentle reason im
So high on jesus, high on jesus,
They tried to put his body under ground.
Flashing high on jesus, high on jesus,
But friend, you just cant keep the good man down.
Oh, lets get high on jesus, high on jesus,
They tried to put his body under ground.
Flashing high on jesus, high on jesus,
But friend, you just cant keep the good man down.

An Autumn Reverie

Alas! Beautiful Summer now hath fled,
And the face of Nature doth seem dead,
And the leaves are withered, and falling off the trees,
By the nipping and chilling autumnal breeze.

The pleasures of the little birds are all fled,
And with the cold many of them will be found dead,
Because the leaves of the trees are scattered in the blast,
And makes the feathered creatures feel downcast.

Because there are no leaves on the trees to shield them from the storm
On a windy, and rainy, cloudy morn;
Which makes their little hearts throb with pain,
By the chilling blast and the pitiless rain.

But still they are more contented than the children of God,
As long as they can pick up a worm from the sod,
Or anything they can get to eat,
Just, for instance, a stale crust of bread or a grain of wheat.

Oh! Think of the little birds in the time of the snow,
Also of the little street waifs, that are driven to and fro,
And trembling in the cold blast, and chilled to the bone,
For the want of food and clothing, and a warm home.

Besides think of the sorrows of the wandering poor,
That are wandering in the cold blast from door to door;
And begging, for Heaven's sake, a crust of bread,
And alas! Not knowing where to lay their head.

While the rich are well fed and covered from the cold,
While the poor are starving, both young and old;
Alas! It is the case in this boasted Christian land,
Where as the rich are told to be kind to the poor, is God's command.

Oh! Think of the working man when he's no work to do,
Who's got a wife and family, perhaps four or two,
And the father searching for work, and no work can be had,
The thought, I'm sure, 'tis enough to drive the poor man mad.

Because for his wife and family he must feel,
And perhaps the thought thereof will cause him to steal
Bread for his family, that are starving at home,
While the thought thereof makes him sigh heavily and groan.

Alas! The pangs of hunger are very hard to hide,
And few people can their temper control,
Or become reconciled to their fate,
Especially when they cannot find anything to eat.

Oh! Think of the struggles of the poor to make a living,
Because the rich unto them seldom are giving;
Wereas they are told he that giveth to the poor lendeth unto the Lord,
But alas! they rather incline their money to hoard.

Then theres the little news-vendors in the street,
Running about perhaps with bare feet;
And if the rich chance to see such creatures in the street,
In general they make a sudden retreat.

Come Lord Jesus, Take Me Home

Originally written as a song, tune: Joan Baez, All my trials Lord, soon be over

This earthly life has got me down
When I get home, I’ll wear a crown
Come, Lord Jesus, take me home

God has promised me in his word
Eternal life through my risen Lord
Come, Lord Jesus, take me home

I’ve not yet seen it, but I’ve been told
Heaven’s streets are paved with gold
Come, Lord Jesus, take me home

Holy Spirit leads I know he’s right
He comforts me both day and night
Come, Lord Jesus, take me home

When life on earth has come and gone
I’ll live in heaven before his throne
Come, Lord Jesus, take me home

Come, Lord Jesus, take me home

I Believe In Jesus

Ran into mother mary down on line
Street in l.a.
She was preaching the gospel
She was singing how jesus saves
When a crowd of passing tourists
Looked to see what they could see
You know before they know it she had
Them all down on their knees
I believe in jesus you know I know him
Oh so well
And Im going to heaven by and by
cause I already been through hell
I believe in jesus, in jesus, in jesus
I believe in jesus, in jesus
So onward christian soldiers still
Marching as to war
With the cross of jesus just going on before
Now jesus was a little lamb, his fleece
Was white as snow
And every where that jesus went
This lamb is sure to go
Well I believe in jesus you know I know him
Oh so well
And Im going to heaven by and by
cause I saved my soul from going to hell
I believe in jesus, in jesus, in jesus
I believe in jesus, in jesus
Look at the sheep cause theyre
Running fast
They wanna make it through the gates
At last
So onward christian soldiers still
Marching as to war
With the cross of jesus just going on before
I believe in jesus, in jesus
I believe in jesus, in jesus.....
