Bossa Nova, Baby

(words & music by jerry leiber - mike stoller)
I said, take it easy, baby
I worked all day and my feet feel just like lead
You got my shirt tails
Flyin all over the place
And the sweat poppin out of my head
She said, hey, bossa nova, baby
Keep on a workin child
This aint no time to quit
She said, go, bossa nova, baby
Keep on dancin
Im about to have myself a fit
Bossa nova, bossa nova
I said, hey little mama,
Lets sit down
Have a drink and dig the band
She said, drink, drink, drink
Oh, fiddle-de-dink
I can dance with a drink in my hand
She said hey bossa nova, baby
Keep on workin child
This aint no time to drink
She said go, bossa nova, baby
Keep on dancin
cause I aint got time to think
I said, come on, baby
Its hot in here
And its oh so cool outside
If you lend me a dollar
I can buy some gas
And we can go for a little ride
She said, hey bossa nova, baby
Keep on workin child
I aint got time for that
She said, go bossa nova, baby
Keep on dancin
Or Ill find myself another cat

Waltz #2

First the mic then a half cigarette
Singing cathy's clown
That's the man that she's married to now
That's the girl that he takes around town
She appears composed, so she is, i suppose
Who can really tell?
She shows no emotion at all
Stares into space like a dead china doll
I'm never gonna know you now, but i'm gonna love you anyhow
Now she's done and they're calling someone
Such a familiar name
I'm so glad that my memories remote
'cos i'm doing just fine hour to hour, note to note
Here it is the revenge to the tune
"you're no good,
You're no good you're no good you're no good"
Can't you tell that it's well understood
I'm never gonna know you now, but i'm gonna love you anyhow
I'm here today and expected to stay on and on and on
I'm tired
I'm tired
Looking out on the substitute scene
Still going strong
Xo, mom
It's ok, it's alright, nothing's wrong
Tell mr. man with impossible plans to just leave me alone
In the place where i make no mistakes
In the place where i have what it takes
I'm never gonna know you now, but i'm gonna love you anyhow
I'm never gonna know you now, but i'm gonna love you anyhow
I'm never gonna know you now, but i'm gonna love you anyhow

On The Beach

I can think of nothing better
Than dancing on the beach
See a girl, you can go and get her
Your troubles will be out of reach
*(On the beach) You can dance to a rock n roll
(On the beach) Hear the Bossa Nova, played with soul
(On the beach) You can dance, twist and shout
(On the beach) Everybody hear me come on out
On the beach (Come on, everybody, stomp your feet)
On the beach (You can dance with anyone you meet)
Cause your troubles are out of reach
On the beach
Umm, this is fun
Umm, wont you tell me
Im the one youre gonna dance with
Yeah, Bossa Nova!
Umm, this is fun
Umm, now I know
Im the one youre gonna dance with
Yeah, twist and shout now!
You can do the dance that you want to
With anyone that you meet
And if the Bossa Nova doesnt get you
The twist will have you on you feet
(Repeat *)

Long Song Comin

Politician 'bout to make his speech
Signal for attention, please
Then he shuffled his notes
And wiped his sweating brow
I looked at my friend next to me
And we don't dare agree
Before this is over
We'll wish we woulda left right now
'Cause it sounds like a long song comin'
And it looks like he might throw in a little dancin', too
Yes, it sounds like a long song comin'
And buddy, listen buddy
We got better things to listen to
Lady from a church bizarre
Was smiling from her head to her feet
All the way down to her feet
That she couldn't see
She started speeking her piece
I said "Stop, Wait a minute, please
Before you start talkin'
I wish you'd please listen to me."
'Cause it sounds like a long song comin'
And though some of the things you say might be true
It still sounds like a long song comin'
And baby, listen lady, I got better things to listen to
Yes, it sounds like a long song comin'
And it looks like you might throw in a little dancin', too
Yes, it sounds like a long song comin'
And buddy, listen buddy, I got better things to listen to
Say, so it sounds like a long song comin'
And it sounds like some just might be true
Still it sounds like a long song comin'
And buddy, listen buddy, I got better things to listen to
And buddy, listen buddy, we got better things to listen to

Avalon

(ferry)
Now the partys over
Im so tired
Then I see you coming
Out of nowhere
Much communication in a motion
Without conversation or a notion
Avalon
When the samba takes you
Out of nowhere
And the backgrounds fading
Out of focus
Yes the picture changing
Every moment
And your destination
You dont know it
Avalon
When you bossa nova
Theres no holding
Would you have me dancing
Out of nowhere

Our Song

a song I never knew
has now become the song I can never forget
it is the song that can cure all
for I sit and listen to that song everyday
its reminds me of all the good
it reminds me of so much
for these lyrics I will never forget
for no matter how bad a day
all I have to do is hit play
and it will all be ok
with this one song I become
so peaceful
so happy
so relaxed
I never thought I would ever feel this calm
but now I do
everyday
because of this song
our song
the song that reminds me of you
of us
of love
of happiness
of everything good
so now I lay here and just listen
listen to our song
I lay here in happiness
as I listen to our song
word by word
I become happier
as I listen to this song
not one time
but over and over
for this is the only song I want to hear

its me, you, and this song
our song

Song of Wrongs

Some songs are trapped, while other songs are free
Some songs can linger, while others need a key
Some songs look Heavenward to find a place to be
While most songs have homes, some songs aren't so lucky

Which song would you rather hear
The song of hope, or the song of fear
The song that has everything, or the song that needs care
The song you care nothing for, or the song you revere

I'd like to listen to all of those forgotten songs
Not the song of rights, I want the song of wrongs
I want the song of solitude hiding in the throngs
I want the song that has no place to which it belongs

The Poseur

The poseurs in town
The poseurs around
Hey, it dont bother me,
But theres a guy eyein you
Hes watched you all night and hes looked you all over
He got his eye on you
But dont act like youre surprised
Because that smooth-looking guys undressing you with his eyes
Look at him look you over
He thinks he can win you over
Hell flirt for a while, make passes and smile at you
But hell never come over
cause hes just a poseur
Who thinks hes a cassonova
That dude standing over there
He thinks he really looks cool
The ladies think he looks smooth
But hes rehearsed every move
He stands in front of the mirror all day
Now hes on display and hes so well routined
Weve all come here to dance but hes just here to be seen
Look at him bossa nova
Look at him move and sway
But hes been practicing days to make his hair fall a certain way
But hell never come over
cause hes just a poseur
Who thinks hes a casanova
Look at him bossa nova, yeah
The poseurs in town
Yeah

The Good Funeral

There may be a heaven
Sealed in the dark
Then there's no denial
About life here on earth
But while I wait here anyway
I have to love this 'til the day -

I want to have the good funeral
Death the mirror of life
Rock and roll in a big stadium
To the tune of paradise

If there is a heaven
I'll send a little note
Thanking everybody
Every good soul
For the good funeral
Death the mirror of life
Darling do this one thing for me
Don't you cry
Please just party when I die

The Song’s End

Where will the song end? Here?
Here by the stretching arc
Red-rimmed and clear>
Or there in the dark?
Where will the song end?
Here, where the lizard sticks its tongue
Into the wide air?
Or there with a friend?
Where will the last note be sung?
Here, or there?

How will the song end? High?
Hight with a fighting ring
Through the wild sky
Re-echoing?
How will the tune cease?
Slow-droned beneath a quiet heaven?
With a dead foe?
Or ‘mid bells of peace?
How will the last note be given?
High, or low?

Call Him

Call him a tune from English song,
Like a middle-English rhythm
Or a real good melody of stone.
I stole the music from the instrument
To take messages from Heaven.
As of now I have in possession a good gift,
One of laughter and song, of living.

Handed Down Quietly

I listen to a song, cleaning a room
my granma says this song sounds good

she makes Sunday lunch
I say this tastes good

she says my clothes are cool
I say they are new
she says she always has liked the colors I am wearing

summer comes around
the green grows in the garden as usual
I trim

she has set a bamboo fan
I use it, hanging a wind-bell my grandpa bought
it rings fine as it sounds, exactly the same as he used to hear

I always have imagined a mutual sense transfers to each other
I will wake up tomorrow
smelling green onion for Miso-Soup for breakfast

Sing me no sad songs cause my hearts
been broken too many times and I've cried
myself asleep too many nights.

Sing me no sad songs cause they bring
back all the hurt and all the memories that
I'm tryin' to forget.

Sing me no sad songs cause I'm feelin'
low and those songs just keep me down.
They keep me from smiling or seein' the sun.

Sing me no sad songs, cause I'm tryin' to
raise myself up and lookin' for a feel
good song and a feel good smile.

Sing me no sad songs cause they chase away
all the stuff that's good in life. Those sad songs...
they always make my brown eyes blue and lock
the door on love and such.

Baby...sing me no sad songs, just hold me and
sing softly...the songs of love and the songs of hope.

If I live to be a hundred I never want to hear those
bad feelin' sad songs again.

This Song

This song has nothing tricky about it
This song aint black or white and as far as I know
Dont infringe on anyones copyright, so . . .
This song well let be
This song is in e
This song is for you and . . .
This tune has nothing bright about it
This tune aint bad or good and come ever what may
My expert tells me its okay
As this song came to me
Quite unknowingly
This song could be you could be . . .
This riff aint trying to win gold medals
This riff aint hip or square
Well done or rare
May end up one more weight to bear
But this song could well be
A reason to see - that
Without you theres no point to . . . this song

A Noon Song

There are songs for the morning and songs for the night,
For sunrise and sunset, the stars and the moon;
But who will give praise to the fulness of light,
And sing us a song of the glory of noon?
Oh, the high noon, the clear noon,
The noon with golden crest;
When the blue sky burns, and the great sun turns
With his face to the way of the west!

How swiftly he rose in the dawn of his strength;
How slowly he crept as the morning wore by;
Ah, steep was the climbing that led him at length
To the height of his throne in the wide summer sky.
Oh, the long toil, the slow toil,
The toil that may not rest,
Till the sun looks down from his journey's crown,
To the wonderful way of the west!

Then a quietness falls over meadow and hill,
The wings of the wind in the forest are furled,
The river runs softly, the birds are all still,
The workers are resting all over the world.
Oh, the good hour, the kind hour,
The hour that calms the breast!
Little inn half-way on the road of the day,
Where it follows the turn to the west!

There's a plentiful feast in the maple-tree shade,
The lilt of a song to an old-fashioned tune,
The talk of a friend, or the kiss of a maid,
To sweeten the cup that we drink to the noon.
Oh, the deep noon, the full noon,
Of all the day the best!
When the blue sky burns, and the great sun turns
To his home by the way of the west.

If It Should Please You

If it should please you, I have come to play
A glad or a sad tune, I wrote along the way
And a few good songs about the old highway
I been around so long lord, I guess Im here to stay
So Im itching to please you, with a topical song
And a few golden oldies and a little hoedown
And I think I know how to make you feel
Were one and the same now, like a big flywheel
I have seen the best of all those things you cant explain
Wanderlust I did not trust but I never did complain
So if it should please you, put away those blues
Just settle on back now, Ill do my licks for you
Its my own way and thats the way it goes
Youre a real good reason for a real good show
I have seen the best of all those things you dont forget
Wanderlust I did not trust and I aint been done in yet
So if you got the dead end of the dealing shoe
This is your last chance man, we belong to you
Its my own way and thats the way I feel
Were one and the same now, like a big flywheel
So if it should please you, I have come to play
A glad or a sad tune, I wrote along the way
And a few good songs about the old highway
I been around so long lord, I guess Im here to stay
Were one and the same now, lets take it away

Dont Cuss The Fiddle

I scandalized my brother
While admittin that he sang some pretty songs (and he did)
Id heard that hed been scandalizing me
And, lord, I knew that that was wrong (and I was)
Now Im lookin at it over
Something cool and feelin fool enough to see
What I had called my brother on
Now he had every right to call on me
Chorus:
Dont ever cuss that fiddle, boy
Unless you want that fiddle out of tune
That picker there in trouble, boy
Aint nothin but another side of you
If we ever get to heaven, boys
It aint because we aint done nothin wrong
Were in this gig together
So lets settle down and steal each others songs
I found a wounded brother
Drinkin bitterly away the afternoon
And soon enough he turned on me
Like hed done every face in that saloon
Well, we cussed him to the ground
And said he couldnt even steal a decent song
But soon as it was spoken
We was sad enough to wish that we were wrong
Chorus:
Dont ever cuss that fiddle, boy
Unless you want that fiddle out of tune
That picker there in trouble, boy
Aint nothin but another side of you
If we ever get to heaven, boys
It aint because we aint done nothin wrong
Were in this gig together
So lets settle down and steal each others songs

I know that it sounds silly
But I think that I just stole somebodys song
