Okie From Muskogee (with The Beach Boys)

We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee;
We don't take our trips on LSD;
We don't burn our draft cards down on Main Street;
We like livin' right, and bein' free.
We don't make a party out of lovin';
We like holdin' hands and pitchin' woo;
We don't let our hair grow long and shaggy,
Like the hippies out in San Francisco do.
I'm proud to be an Oakie from Muskogee,
A place where even squares can have a ball.
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
And white lightin's still the biggest thril of all.
Leather boots are still in style for mainly footwear;
Beads and roman sandals won't be seen.
Football's still the roughest thing on campus,
And the kids here still respect the college dean.
And I'm proud to be an Oakie from Muskogee,
A place where even squares can have a ball.
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
And white lightin's still the biggest thril of all.
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
In Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA

Coney Island Baby

You know, man, when I was a young man in high school
You believe in or not I wanted to play football for the coach
And all those older guys
They said he was mean and cruel, but you know
Wanted to play football for the coach
They said I was to little too light weight to play line-backer
So I say Im playing right-end
Wanted to play football for the coach
cause, you know some day, man
You gotta stand up straight unless youre gonna fall
Then youre gone to die
And the straightest dude
I ever knew was standing right for me all the time
So I had to play football for the coach
And I wanted to play football for the coach
When youre all alone and lonely
In your midnight hour
And you find that your soul
Its been up for sale
And you begin to think bout
All the things that youve done
And you begin to hate
Just bout everything
But remember the princess who lived on the hill
Who loved you even though she knew you was wrong
And right now she just might come shining through
And the -
- glory of love, glory of love
Glory of love, just might come through
And all your two-bit friends
Have gone and ripped you off
Theyre talking behind your back saying, man
Youre never going to be no human being
And you start thinking again
bout all those things that youve done
And who it was and what it was
And all the different things you made every different scene
Ahhh, but remember that the city is a funny place
Something like a circus or a sewer
And just remember different people have peculiar tastes
And the -
- glory of love, the glory of love
The glory of love, might see you through
Yeah, but now, now
Glory of love, the glory of love
The glory of love, might see you through
Glory of love, ah, huh, huh, the glory of love
Glory of love, glory of love
Glory of love, now, glory of love, now
Glory of love, now, now, now, glory of love
Glory of love, give it to me now, glory of love see you through
Oh, my coney island baby, now
(Im a coney island baby, now)
Id like to send this one out for lou and rachel
And all the kids and p.s. 192
Coney island baby
Man, Id swear, Id give the whole thing up for you

Opposites

The Half-Soled-Boots-With-Toecaps-Child
Walked out into the street
And splashed in all the pubbles till
She had such shocking feet

The Patent-Leather-Slipper-Child
Stayed quietly in the house
And sat upon the fender stool
As still as any mouse.

The Half-Soled-Boots-With-Toecaps-Child
Her hands were black as ink;
She would come running through the house
And begging for a drink.

The Patent-Leather-Slipper-Child
Her hands were white as snow;
She did not like to play around,
She only liked to sew.

The Half-Soled-Boots-With-Toecaps-Child
Lost hair ribbons galore;
She dropped them on the garden walks,
She dropped them on the floor.

The Patent-Leather-Slipper-Child
O thoughtful little girl!
She liked to walk quite soberly,
It kept her hair in curl.

The Half-Soled-Boots-With-Toecaps-Child
When she was glad or proud
Just flung her arms round Mother's neck
And kissed her very loud.

The Patent-Leather-Slipper-Child
Was shocked at such a sight,
She only offered you her cheek
At morning and at night.

O Half-Soled-Boots-With-Toecaps-Child
Your happy laughing face
Does like a scented Summer rose
Make sweet the dullest place.

O Patent-Leather-Slipper-Child
My dear, I'm well content
To have my daughter in my arms,
And not an ornament.

Bucolic wave [Bucolica undă]

The bucolic wave sleeps under calm willow trees
Here and there gilded by the sun's beautiful glory,
When in shade, shepherds kind, with a skin white as cheese,
Out of willows run naked – pink and bright milky story.

The bucolic wave takes them in its soft and thrilled hush,
Their blonde hair and nice shapes make it feel like a dame,
Trickling on naked bodies shudders gently, ablush,
But they shake it like dancers off their skin without shame.

Honors

When the column of light on the waters is glassed,
As blent in one glow seem the shine and the stream;
But wave after wave through the glory has passed,
Just catches, and flies as it catches, the beam
So honors but mirror on mortals their light;
Not the man but the place that he passes is bright.

Cease to resist, giving my goodbye
Drive my car into the ocean
Youll think Im dead, but I sail away
On a wave of mutilation
A wave
Wave
Ive kissed mermaids, rode the el nino
Walked the sand with the crustaceans
Could find my way to mariana
On a wave of mutilation,
Wave of mutilation
Wave of mutilation

My Glory Is Not The Glory of God

MY GLORY IS NOT THE GLORY OF G-D

My glory is not the glory of G-d
I do not know what the glory of God is-
I do not know my own glory.
Glory glory glory
What’s glory?
We are small lost souls in a space and time so far beyond us
It is difficult to imagine
Even God knows how to deal with it.

When In Rome

Well, you must be from the city
'Cause you sure ain't from round here
There ain't no smoke free section
We don't sell no import beer.
You been throwin' round that attitude
Since you walked in that door
I don't know where you come from
But you ain't there anymore
When in Rome,
You can do like the Roman's
But, when your down home
You better do like us.
You been lookin' down your nose
At our water tower town
Ain't no one getting rich
But, there's enough to go around.
If ya don't like tracy's cookin'
Well, ya best still leave a tip
She's back there in that kitchen
With a baby on her hip.
When in Rome,
You can do like the Roman's
But, when your down home
You better do like us.
You put your best foot forward
When you go to meet a man
Look him in the eye
And put a good grip on his hand.
Don't cuss around the ladies
Tell us how to raise our kids
We like doing business
Like our daddys, daddys did.
When you drive off in your beamer
If ya don't do 35
Don't give no lip to Beuford
Or he might just dot your eye.
And when your at the courthouse
Before Ole judge McCall
You best not say a word
About them comandments on his wall.
Naw!
When in Rome,
You can do like the Roman's
But when your down home
You better do like us.
Yeah, Yeah Yeah
When in Rome,
You can do like the Roman's
But when your down home
You better do like us.
Mmmm Hmmmm
Better do like us boy
Don't you come in here talking all that trash
Ya just might get your nose smashed.
When in Rome,
You can do like the Roman's...

Manhattan Skyline

(mags/pal waaktaar)
We sit and watch umbrellas fly
Im trying to keep my newspaper dry
I hear myself say,
My boats leaving now
...so we shake hands and cry
Now I must wave goodbye
Wave goodbye
Wave goodbye
Wave goodbye
Wave goodbye
Wave goodbye
You know
I dont want to cry again
I dont want to cry again
Dont want to say goodbye
I dont want to cry again
I dont want to run away
Dont want to race this pain
Ill never see your face again
Oh but how
How can you say
That I didnt try...
You see things in the depths of my eyes
That may loves run dry
No...
We leave to their goodbyes
Ive come to depend on the look in their eyes
My bloods sweet for pain
The wind and the rain bring back words of a song
And they say: wave goodbye
Wave goodbye
Wave goodbye
Wave goodbye
Wave goodbye
Wave goodbye
But you know
I dont want to fall again
Dont want to look this pain
Dont want another friend
Dont want to try again
Dont want to see you hurt
Dont let me see you hurt
I dont want to cry again
Ill never see your face again
How can you say
That I didnt try
You know I did
You see things in the depths of my eyes
That my loves run dry
...so I read to myself:
A chance of a lifetime to see new horizons
On the front page
A black and white picture
Of manhattan skyline

Joe & Rosalita

(phil vassar, charlie black)
Joe and rosalita, lookem up in the year book
Even then they had that wild-in-love crazy look
Joes car on friday night, after the ball game
Steam so thick on the windows
They could write their names
Theyd fight like cats and dogs outside of homeroom
Seeem hangin all over each other that same afternoon
Joe and rosalita
Ball-cap, good-ole boy and brown-eyed senorita
Rocked this town like no ones ever done
round here theyre known as the legends of love
Old mr.rosenbaum kickedem out of the senior prom
Busted for dirty dancin
Sent him home and he called her mom
Pulled the old pillow trick, and they both snuck out
Showed up two days later still in a tux and a prom gown
Got married on the steps outside the courthouse
Called it the great escape, people still talk about it now
Joe and rosalita
Ball-cap, good-ole boy and brown-eyed senorita
Rocked this town like no ones ever done
round here theyre known as the legends of love
Rosalita is still a rose
Now its been 10 years for rose and joe
Now sometimes you seeem cruisin down main street
Still got his arm around her, two kids in the backseat
They book a babysitter to go out on friday
Sometimes they never even make it out of the driveway
Joe and rosalita
Ball-cap, good-ole boy and brown-eyed senorita
Rocked this town like no ones ever done
round here theyre known as the legends of love

Cant Hold Us Down

So what am I not supposed to have an opinion
Should I be quiet just because Im a woman
Call me a bitch cos I speak whats on my mind
Guess its easier for you to swallow if I sat and smiled
When a female fires back
Suddenly the target dont know how to act
So he does what any little boy will do
Making up a few false rumors or two
That for sure is not a man to me
Slanderin names for popularity
Its sad you only get your fame through controversy
But now its time for me to come and give you more to say
This is for my girls all around the world
Whove come across a man who dont respect your worth
Thinking all women should be seen, not heard
So what do we do girls?
Shout louder!
Letting them know were gonna stand our ground
Lift your hands high and wave them proud
Take a deep breath and say it loud
Never can, never will, cant hold us down
\nobody can hold us down
Nobody can hold us down
Nobody can hold us down
Never can, never will so what am I not supposed to say what Im saying
Are you offended by the message Im bringing
Call me whatever cos your words dont mean a thing
Guess you aint even a man enough to handle what I sing
If you look back in history
Its a common double standard of society
The guy gets all the glory the more he can score
While the girl can do the same and yet you call her a whore
I dont understand why its okay
The guy can get away with it & the girl gets named
All my ladies come together and make a change
Start a new beginning for us everybody sing
This is for my girls all around the world
Whove come across a man who dont respect your worth
Thinking all women should be seen, not heard
What do we do girls?
Shout louder!
Letting them know were gonna stand our ground
Lift your hands high and wave em proud
Take a deep breath and say it loud
Never can, never will, cant hold us down lil kim:
Check it - heres something I just cant understand
If the guy have three girls then hes the man
He can either give us some head, sex her off
If the girl do the same, then shes a whore
But the tables about to turn
Ill bet my fame on it
Cats take my ideas and put their name on it
Its aiight though, you cant hold me down
I got to keep on movin
To all my girls with a man who be tryin to mack
Do it right back to him and let that be that
You need to let him know that his game is whack
And lil kim and christina aguilera got your back
But youre just a little boy
Think youre so cute, so coy
You must talk so big
To make up for small lil things
So youre just a little boy
All youll do is annoy
You must talk so big
To make up for small lil things
This is for my girls...
This is for my girls all around the world
Whove come across a man who dont respect your worth
Thinking all women should be seen, not heard
So what do we do girls?
Shout louder!
Letting them know were gonna stand our ground
Lift your hands high and wave em proud
Take a deep breath and say it loud
Never can, never will, cant hold us down

Whove come across a man who dont respect your worth

So what do we do girls?

Spread the word, cant hold us down

Vision of an old Man

A cool breeze touched his white hair
While he was walking in the mystery street
Long life has made him to bend,
In front of the things those the history made

He was old, old enough to see the world for what it is
He was old, old enough to feels the death
He was old, old enough to think about the life that passes
He was old, old enough to see the real masses

White hair, as white as the teeth
Teeth those just moved for lots of times
Blue eyes…
Which were covered by glasses, Glasses of lies? !

Hands of times aren't cruel, it's their duty
We can't stop them of the work they are doing
BUT! A time, it's our turn...
To be old, and then burn...

The old man wanted nothing instead of a simple respect
Respect, the thing that is forgotten for these people
A day that old man was young and powerful, but so prideful
And now he is old like his father that was…but now he is none full

He just needs respect, a respect for his white hair
Respect for his long life that is passed
Respect for his respectful heart
That now is tears a part.

Mist and Moon

Why should the mist rise from the stream.
A lyric on its bars!
And steal from every wave the gleam,
Begot by lover stars.

O see the moon ascend the sky!
The vapour tremble, burn,
A chrysoprase enamoured lie,
Above transfigured fern.

On tree and stream, a glory shed,
That jewels wave and leaf,
For sorrow is with beauty wed,
And joy is born of grief.

The Escape of Billy the Kid

In an upper room they have me shackled.

Handcuffed, abused and under guard.

Pat Garrett’s off collecting taxes

This might be my chance, dear Lord.

Bob Olinger would love to kill me

He’s waved his shotgun in my face.

James Bell, the other guard, is softer,

He’s here to keep Bob in his place.

At noon I had the chance I wanted.

Olinger lunched across the street.

Bell was left alone to guard me-

a handcuffed man with shackled feet.

I told Bell I felt nature calling.

He took me on a Privy run

He was quick but I was quicker

We struggled and I got his gun

I pistol whipped my former guard.

I took his keys and freed my hands.

I didn’t want to kill him but,

I had to just because he ran.

That gunshot stirred the sleepy town

Olinger ran from across the street

I killed him then with his own shotgun

He needed killing, I’ll lose no sleep.

No lawman left in Lincoln town

I made the blacksmith break my chains

I saw Bell’s horse before the courthouse

I saddled up and took the reins.

No one made a move to stop me

As I rode out away from town

The rope they had to hang me waits

another’s neck to slip around.

A Wave From Jimmy Sullivan

A wave from Jimmy Sullivan in Millstreet far away
A nice and spontaneous gesture that did help to make my day
From Clara road one must presume in view of Clara hill
It brought back the old memories as if time had stood still.

When we played Soccer and Gaelic football some twenty years ago
Though our old legs ageing back then nowadays are far more slow
But Jimmy looking fit and well despite the march of time
He was a quick and elusive player when he was in his prime.

One of those lucky people who has a sense of place
In Millstreet Town and Parish his is a well known face
He never will leave Millstreet in Millstreet he will stay
And in his beloved Town of Millstreet he will grow old and gray.

From life i do feel hardened and i feel too old for tears
But that wave from Jimmy Sullivan it took me back the years
To when we were young and fitter and we chased the ball around
In the Inch field at Claraghatlea back then our football ground.

History teaches us...

A stone's throw, just, from Chelsea's football ground,
-skinhead territory long before any silverware -
there's a barber whose window decorations indicate
they're stylists in that tricky, ingrowing black hair;
I dropped in there one day; and as the one white face
in that busy, proud salon (I took the last spare seat with some relief)
spent half an hour or so as a 'minority',
as images of identity played out some tennis game of mind
across the net of what - division or harmony?
was I the face of hated white supremacy, now
the hated white minority? Covert glances on both sides...

Eventually I settled down, to then enjoy the novel ritual to me:
when you're finished, dusted down - rise from the chair,
and pause a second or two upon the barber's dais there
and face the audience; to be admired for sharp new style
which is by implication, tribute to the barber's skill;
there's palpably the sound of silent, proud applause
(I even dared, now shorn and bolder, to acquiesce, with respect,
in just a hint of this attractive ritual...) .
And here's the crowning glory of this escapade:
they charged me less than for that difficult black hair...

'History teaches us...'
...not to trust too much the lessons of history;
but rather, learn from how it's working out:
emigrate to seek a better life somewhere
where faiths and customs are so different
and you're the proud, hardworking, strange minority.

But then, beware - your children will not want
the birthmark of 'minority'; and maybe seek
some other pride than that of family,
a new identity, some wilder faith
than football's common touch, or cricket green;

the hosts and guests of history must learn
to seek to learn the lessons both must earn.

The Romans, empire-builders, had a phrase for this:
'lacrymae rerum' - which so gladly, sadly, means
the tears of things...

The Biggest Ball Of Twine In Minnesota

Well, I had two weeks of vacation time coming
After working all year down at big roys eating and plumbing
So one night when my family the I were gathered round the dinner table
I said, kids, if you could go anywhere in this great big world, now
Whered you like to go ta
They said, dad, we wanna see the biggest ball of twine in minnesota
They picked the biggest ball of twine in minnesota
So the very next day we loaded up the car
With potato skins and pickled weiners,
Crossword puzzles, spider-man comics, and mamas home made rhubarb pie
Pulled out of the driveway and the neighbors, they all waved good-bye
And so began our three day journey
We picked up a guy holding a sign that said twine ball or bust
He smelled real bad and he said his name was bernie
I put in a slim whitman tape, my wife put on a brand new hair net
Kids were in the back seat jumping up and down,
Yelling are we there yet?
And all of us were joined together in one common thought
As we rolled down the long and winding interstate in our 53 desoto
Were gonna see the biggest ball of twine in minnesota
Were headin for the biggest ball of twine in minnesota
Oh, we couldnt wait to get there
So we drove straight through for three whole days and nights
Of course, we stopped for more pickled weiners now and then
The scenery was just so pretty, boy I wish the kids couldve seen it
But you cant see out of the side of the car
Because the windows are completely covered
With the decals of all the place where weve already been
Theres elvis-o-rama, the tupperware museum,
The boll weevil monument, and cranberry world,
The shuffleboard hall of fame, poodle dog rock,
And the mecca of albino squirrels
Weve been to ghost towns, theme parks, wax museums,
And a place where you can drive through the middle of a tree
Weve seen alligator farms and tarantula ranches,
But theres still one thing we gotta see
Well, we crossed the state line about 6:39
And we saw a sign that said twine ball exit - 50 miles
Oh, the kids were so happy the started singing
99 bottles of beer on the wall for the 27th time that day
So, we pulled off the road at the last chance gas station
Got a few more pickled weiners and a diet chocolate soda
On our way to see the biggest ball of twine in minnesota
Were gonna see the biggest ball of tiwne in minnesota
Finally, at 7:37 early wednesday evening as the sun was setting
In the minnesota sky
Out in the distance, on the horizon, it appeared to me like a vision
Before my unbelieving eye
I parked the car and walked with awe-filled reverence towards that
Glorius huge majestic sphere
I was just so overwhelmed by its sheer imensity,
I had to pop myself a beer
Yes, on these hallowed grounds, open ten to eight on weekdays,
In a little shrine under a make-shift pagoda,
There sits the biggest ball of twine in minnesota
I tell you, its the biggest ball of twine in minnesota
Oh, what on earth would make a man decide to do that kind of thing?
Oh, windin up twenty-one thousand, one hundred forty pounds of string
What was he trying to prove, who was he trying to impress
Why did he build it, how did he do, it was anybodys guess
Where did he get the twine, what was goin through his mind
Did it just seem like a good idea at the time
Well, we walked up beside it and I warned the kids
Now, you better not touch it, those ropes are there for a reason
I said, maybe if youre good, Ill tie it to the back of our car
And we can take it home, but I was only teasin
Then we went to the gift shop and stood in line
Bought a souvineer miniature ball of twine, some window decals,
And anything else theyd sell us
And we bought a couple post cards, greetings from the twine ball,
Wish you were here
Wont the folks back home be jealous
I gave our camera to bernie and we stood by the ball and we all gathered
round and said, cheese
The bernie ran away with my brand new insti-matic,
But at least we got our memories
Then we all just stared at the ball for a while and my eyes got moist,
But I said with a smile, kids, this heres what americas all about
Then I started feelin kinda gooey inside and I fell on my knees
And I cried and cried
And thats when those security guards threw us out
You know, I bet if we unravelled that sucker,
Itd roll all the way down to fargo, north dakota
cause its the biggest ball of twine in minnesota
Im talkin bout the biggest ball of twine in minnesota
Well, we stayed that night at the twine ball inn
In the morning we were on our way home again
But we really didnt want to leave, that was perfectly clear
I said, folks, I can tell youre all sad to go
Then I winked my eye and I said, you know, I got a funny kind of feelin
Well be comin back again next year
cause Ive been all around this great big world
And I cant think of anywhere else Id rather go to
Than the biggest ball of twine in minnesota
I said the biggest ball of twine in minnesota

Bus Trip To No Particular Place Pt. I

Pt I

Decided to go nowhere, yet cover great distances
Take a long time in arriving, to no one particular place
Experience other people’s ways of surviving
Experience their struggles, their unknowing grace

The bus trip started with no particular direction
It wasn’t my point to go from point A to Point B
The point was to get a feel for the face and complexion
Of my fellow travelers… across this asphaltic sea

A buzz cut young man, across the aisle, smiled and told me his story
Fresh out of high school and headed for camp Lejuene
Soon to be a proud Marine and bask in the glory
Yet fearing that combat and death could come soon

He transferred to another bus with a wistful smile and a wave
One could sense the reluctance of his leaving this place
Would destiny give him a bright future… or a dark grave?
But I didn’t begrudge him… his trip through this space

He was only the first person that I got to talk to and know
On my trip to nowhere…to no particular place
But my experience on this trip had barely begun to grow
My next would be that old lady staring out the window…into space
