Things could be better, can't handle this yearning.

Across the skies at night,
streaks the wishing stars
as the heavens open up
revealing their vast glory
with twinkling stars bright.
Here we stand mere mortals
wishing our dreams to come true
as each star across the cosmos
plays an absent melody.

they’re ‘close’, we say,
wishing to be fair, kind, just;
wishing not to know too much;
in case this clouds
our mind’s clear day..

they’ve been together since, oh, since
the one she, had a bright career,
the other she, just had a ‘job’;
and now they’re old;

it would be easy for the mind
to label them… the which, the how..
and yet we know
(wishing not to know too much)
that love flows as it clearly does

and who am I and who are you
to say, to think, to guess,
that any love is ‘not quite love’; or
whose love’s just a second-best…

and as you see them walking slow,
Darby and Darby, or Joan and Joan,
your heart's heart knows, that as death beckons,
how each dreads to die the second.

Walking Home Through the Rain

Walking home through the rain reminds me
Of those long past school days
The wet tie flying in the wind
The mud in those stiff academic shoes
Reflections and dreams of insurrection

Walking through the rain reminds me
Of trying to keep my wet shoes clean
First day at work rain drumming down
On my laborious earnest dampened head.

Walking through the rain in a foreign land reminds me
How often I longed for home: the slashing familiar rain
In alleys lined with laburnum: how even the cold betrayed me
The drops fell into eyes and then in rivulets
Leaked out treacherously again

Walking through the wet wet rain
Walking working wishing wondering
Waiting for a kind of fate
Waiting for kind fate
Fatally kind; rain, when you fell on parched land
Only then did my soul, apaised, try to understand.

A Wishing well Love

I sit here all alone
The snow melting on my face,
A falling leaf sheds a memory,
Of my first love

It was here, that barmy night
She tripped in fun, amongst the leaves.
She breathed a smile,
Took my hand,
And softly seduced me with a kiss
A secret wish comes true.

We made love that summer evening,
By the river, under the willow
.Watched by a lover’s moon,
Hidden from View

Stared at the stars with our wishing well,
We dreamed of love and silly things,
Two hearts, inhibition to the wind,
Our souls locked in nature’s song.

But Young Love is a precious thing,
And winters do blow cold.
And in the fading light
She said goodbye.

A last glance, a precocious smile,
And the last moon dance was over
So here I sit with my wishing well
Full of broken dreams,

Yet still, I see embers of a girl
Who shared love, under the willow
Gave hope to my dreams,
Touched my heart,
And taught me well about
The wishing well

No tears now, there are dreams to make.
For That wish has flown away
To find another love
To breathe another wish
Into another’s heart.
To unlock more dreams
For her wishing well to pour

But our union was fruitful
