American Without Tears #2

December 1965 in caracas
When arnie laflem took a piece of the pie
When he packed up the casino chips, the iou and the abacus
And switched off the jukebox in a a fool such as i
He was a leg man who was open to offers
But he couldnt get her off his mind as he passed the tourist office
And as he entertained himself singing just like sammy davis junior
He toyed with her trip to miami
For money like that
He could have sweet talk in her ear
Now they dont speak any english
Just american without tears
It was an idea that he dangled on his knee
And nursed it like his coffee cup
When he couldnt find any other way
It always seemed to come to him
While the day was dipping down
And sun was like a lightbulb
Being swallowed by a clown
He took her for everything
He took her for his only one
He took her out of coventry and over to idaho
But the war wound that he carried home
Wasnt really visable
When bullets were forgotton
She lived dowdry, down, and miserable
And she seemed to be crying for year after year
And says, you dont speak any english
Just american between tears.
Honey she said to me will you turn down the radio.
You havent slept a wink since we came to havana
When youre gonna get the strength to go over to florida
All you ever listen to is the voice of america.
It was the story of a young english puppet
Who took up with a soldier boy
And thought she would profit.
Just like me she found out what true love is about
Anyway shes in new orleans it would never work out
Oh she seemed to be crying for year after year
Now you dont speak any english
Just american between tears.
Just american without tears.
For you seem to be crying year after year
Now you dont speak any english
Just american without tears.
Just american without tears.

American Without Tears

Outside in new orleans the heat was almost frightening
But my hotel room as usual was freezing and unkind
On tv they prosecute anyone whos exciting
So I put on my overcoat and went down to find
In revlon and crimpelene they captured my heart
To the strain of a piano and a cocktail murderess
She was singing that its too late, I agreed with that part
For two english girls who had changed their address
[chorus]
Now it seems weve been crying for years and for years
Now I dont speak any english, just american without tears
Just american without tears
One had been a beauty queen and the other was her friend
They had known rogues and rascals and showbiz impresarios
While the boys were licking hitler they had something to defend
>from men armed with chewing gum and fine nylon hose
By a bicycle factory as they sounded the siren
And returned into the dancehall she knew he was the one
Though he wasnt tall or handsome she laughed when he told her
Im the sheriff of nottingham and this is little john
[chorus]
At a dock in southampton full of tearful goodbyes
Newsreel commentators said cheerio, g.i. brides
Soon theyll be finding the cold facts and lies
New words for suspenders and young girls backsides
Now Im in america and running from you
Like my grandfather before me walked the streets of new york
And I think of all the women I pretend mean more than you
When I open my mouth and I cant seem to talk
Now it seems weve been crying for years and for years
Now I dont speak any english just american without tears
Just american without tears

This is America: Better know English

America was once the magnificent place
Where all immigrants wanted to escape
So they illegally come here, as illegal aliens
Hiding in the back of our American vans
Now our schools and jobs require multiple languages
When we’re the Americans, we’re supposed to speak English!
And we do and just because they don’t
Doesn’t mean their language is a demand we should know
Don’t come to America if you don’t know the language
I’m just being realistic, I’m not being racist
Don’t put up store signs if they’re not readable
You’re in America; English is the main language you should know
Then they’re pissed because people won’t help out their business
But their forgetting us Americans don’t speak their language
We don’t go to Mexico demanding English classes
So why should they own the right to demand us Spanish?
I love the language, and everything BUT
THIS IS AMERICA look our history up!
Then tell me if French should be required
Where in the hell in the time line is that desired?
I know this is the land of opportunity, land of the free
But we should be able to communicate as human beings
And if that’s just too hard no one said they had to stay here
They can go back where they came from and speak in harmony there
I’m just a full blood American, as so the rest of my family
And like others, our language should be the first they’re demanding
We're tired of going to our fastfood restaurants to eat
When the orderer of our order can't even speak
And buyers, don't buy our house
If you can't even pronounce our street out
I'm tired of security going through all our private equipment
I'm an American, Bitch, do I look like a terrorist?
Honestly, you can come here if you want to be
Since this is the best place of opportunity
And we don’t care if you speak 20 different languages and love them
But this is AMERICA, ENGLISH better be one of them!

yes, what if God does not speak english at all?

you were not born yesterday
and probably heard it before

that if your God does not speak english
then he must not be God

of course, something arrogant
hangs in the air
of this effortless superiority that
'englishers'
'english-plongplangs'
clai m, which, of course, we
always oppose and dub
as prettry dumb silly

but anyhow, yes, we are asked again
what if?
what if, this God, does not really speak English?

well, of course, he is still God
and he must not have considered the english language
that important

and i agree, even if i speak it,
i still have this language
of my soul,

albeit, in english, for you,
who does not speak my own language,

yes, of course, for you to perhaps
understand,

but i like it though, this thought
that God does not speak
the english language, lest, he may sound

so englishly, oh well,
arrogant.....

dear God
do you really...not speak english?

If It Dont Work Out

If it dont work out.
(r. argent)
When he loved me nothing in this world
Could touch his love
And now the light of love is back
Can I return the joys hes dreaming of?
I dont know
I dont know
(but if it dont work out)
The tears that Im crying baby
Wont bring him home, no, no
I wanna bring him home
Will he still care for me
The way he did he before?
Or, will he turn away
And tell me he dont love me anymore?
I dont know
Oh, I dont know
(but if it dont work out)
The tears that Im crying, baby
Wont bring him home
I wanna bring him home
But if I could forget
The tears and the crying
That I went through once before, yeah
Maybe my love and I could start
Wed start again, yeah
One day I know well find again
The love we had and i
Will know and feel
The joys and pleasures that Im dreaming of
I dont know
I dont know
(but if it dont work out)
The tears that Im crying, baby
Aint gonna bring him home, again
Aint gonna bring him home
Hey, but if it dont work out
The tears that Im crying, baby
Hey, aint gonna bring him home again
Im gonna cry my heart out waiting for him, yeah
Cry my heart out, yes I will
Cry my heart out, yes I will
Cry my heart

All American Country Boy

(keith stegall/charlie craig)
I work a forty hour week and I earn my keep
And I try to walk proud and tall
I keep my nose to the ground, I dont get behind
And I dont back up at all
Well my necks a little red, my collars blue
I sip a little coffee, and I drink a little booze
cause Im an all american country boy
Im my daddys spittin image and my mamas pride and joy
There aint nothing down home that I really dont enjoy
cause Im an all american country boy
I drive a pickup truck and I dont pass the buck
And I always speak my mind
Im hooked on t.v., rolaids, and b.c.s
And I know how to have a good time
Im a little bit rowdy and a little bit tame
Aint no way Im ever gonna change
cause Im an all american country boy
Im my daddys spittin image and my mamas pride and joy
There aint nothing down home that I really dont enjoy
cause Im an all american country boy
Well I must admit that Ive mellowed a bit
Father time can slow you down
Im still doin all I used to do
It just takes a little longer now
cause Im an all american country boy
Im my daddys spittin image and my mamas pride and joy
There aint nothing down home that I really dont enjoy
cause Im an all american country boy
Im just a country boy
A good ol country boy

American Soldier

American Soldier

When I say... 'I am an American Soldier'

I'm not shouting I'm better than you.

I'm whispering, I was a boy, and now

find myself a man.

When I say... 'I am an American

Soldier'

I speak not only of this with pride

I'm also confessing that I stumble,

make mistakes,

And need competent leadership to

help guide me,

So I in turn,

can be a competent leader.

When I say... 'I am an American

Soldier'

I'm not trying to be strong,

I'm professing that I am weak and

need the strength of my peers and

country,

To help carry me on.

When I say... 'I am an American

Soldier'

I'm not bragging of past successes

I'm admitting I have failed in the past

Admitted the mistakes and tried to

right the wrongs.

When I say... 'I am an American

Soldier'

I'm not claiming to be perfect,

My flaws are far too visible

But my country needs me,

and I soldier on.

When I say... 'I am an American

Soldier'

I can still feel the sting of pain, from

seeing those that I care about die,

While we fight for those that we love.

I have my share of heartaches,

So I call upon the American People to

help guide our soldiers, when home

When I say... 'I am an American

Soldier'

I'm not better than thou,

I'm just a simple man,

Who was called upon by his country

to fight.

This New Year

Im gonna find true love
This new year
January blues
The nights are dark and cold
The heartaches are frozen so they hount you
February snows
Abandoned cars and glowing fires
Sunlight from a shining spire blinds you
Dont you depend on love thats here then gone
Dont you look back to where the tears came from
This new year
Were gonna make it work now and for a lifetime
This new year
Gonna spread the word and shout it from the rooftops
Gonna find true love and cherish it, cherish it always
This new year
Cool winds in the spring
Blow the cobwebs out
Take away the doubts with freedom
Hear this beating heart
The feeling so alive
With you right by my side Ill never die lonely
We must depend on love thats here to stay
And jesus loves you more than you can say
This new year
Were gonna make it work now and for a lifetime
This new year
Were gonna spread the word and shout it from the rooftops
Were gonna find true love and cherish it, cherish it always
Well see a new revival call yeah
Well reach out to the broken ones
Well tell it to the world
To every boy and girl that love has come
This new year
Were gonna find true love
Ooh cherish it
This new year
Were gonna make it work now and for a lifetime
This new year
Were gonna spread the word and shout it from the rooftops
This new year
We re gonna find true love and cherish it always
This new year
Were gonna reach out to this new year

American Woman

Huh!
American woman
Stay away from me
American woman
Mama let me be
Dont come hare hanging around my door
I dont want to see your face no more
I got more important things to do
Than spend my time growin old with you
Now woman
Stay away
American woman
Listen what I say
American woman
Get away from me
American woman
Mama let me be
Dont come here knocking around my door
I dont want to see your shadow no more
Colored lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone elses eyes
Now woman
Get away

Listen what I say

Listen what I say
Dont come hanging around my door
Dont want to see your face no more
I dont need your war machines
I dont need your ghetto scenes
Colored lights can hypnotize

Get away

Listen what I say
American woman
Get away from me
American woman
Mama let me be

And I gotta go
I wanna fly away
Im gonna leave you, woman

American woman
Youre no good for me

All American Girl

Skin tight soul delight
Changing her life for another
She dreams magazines
Sees herself on the cover
Anything anytime anywhere
Its fitting in that matters
Faithfully she believes in the look he wants to know better
She knows what she wants
Shes an all american girl
She knows what she needs
Shes a sold american girl
She knows what she knows
Shes an all american girl
She does what she does
Shes an all american girl
Sold american
Shes got a double bubble with a bossanova back
Shes a real hot pepper and I like it like that
Its all right you dont have to change your way
Youre all right Im hoping the best part stays
She knows what she wants
Shes an all american girl
She knows what she needs
Shes a sold american girl
She knows what she knows
Shes an all american girl
She does what she does
Shes an all american girl
Sold american
Street smart close to the heart gotta be real
More than the clothes you wear
You know what youve got look to your heart
You carry your history there

English Dream

I once had a dream
A feeling inside
A yearning so bad you have to shout it out
Hey kid look at me
You can make it real
You can get it if you want
When I first started out
They shut all the doors
But I laughed at all the doors
And I kicked them down
Heres my energy for you
Step into the light while you still feel young
I look in your eyes
And I reach for your hands
Well Ill do anything
To make you understand
That Im still the seeker
For your english dream
Dont you give up trying
And dont you let me down
The english dream - dont let me down
The english dream - dont let me down
The english dream - dont let me down
The english dream - dont let me down
I look in your eyes
And I reach for your hands
Well Ill do anything
To help you understand
That Im still the seeker
For your english dream
Dont you
Dont you give up trying
And dont you let me down
The english dream - dont let me down
The english dream - dont let me down

Im Gonna Be Alright

Its funny cause for a while
I walked around with a smile
But deep inside I could hear voices telling me this aint right
Dont you know its not for you
I always knew what I had to do
But its hard to get away
Because I love you
I just tried to stay
I used to say I couldnt do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasnt with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And I know inside Im gonna be alright
I said I couldnt do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasnt with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And that voice inside says Im gonna be alright
Friends of mine say to me
They say you got control over me
Youre not alone
I played a part
I saw the way you were from the start
Could I expect so much from you
You had a girl when I first met you
Did the best that you could do
Now I realize that I cant change you
I used to say I couldnt do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasnt with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And I know inside Im gonna be alright
I said I couldnt do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasnt with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And that voice inside says Im gonna be alright
Said I wouldnt walk away
Somedays I want to stay
But leaving you is what I need to do to be okay
Never thought it would be true
Me livin without you
But now its time for me to make a move
I used to say I couldnt do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasnt with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And I know inside Im gonna be alright
I said I couldnt do it
But I did it
After telling everybody that I wasnt with it
Though it brings tears to my eyes
I can feel it
And that voice inside says Im gonna be alright

Soul Crying Out

Listen to the rhythm
Listen to the beat
It has a cold wind blowing
Up through the street
Soul crying out
People crying out
In through the valleys
In through the streets
Feel the whole world moving
Underneath our feet
Somethings going on
I said what is going wrong
I feel them coming
So close behind
Sister says, were next in line
The man he says, thats ok
And the government says youre gonna pay, pay, pay
And you pay
Still you pay
Its just a soul crying out
Its just the people crying out
Its the land crying out
And I can hear you crying out
And I say, I dont know
Maybe I dont care
What I know is
I gotta get out of here
And Im going
Going any day
Some sweet day
Some sweet day
I gotta find a way
I can hear the lovers, whisper in the street
See a crowd has gathered underneath the heat
I hear what they say
But I dont believe what they say
I see the woman, with tears in her eyes
I hear the baby, calling in the night
Something on the bed, was it something she said
Hell this is not right
What goes on through the night
I hear her coming, all in my mind
Sweet common love, so hard to find
Someone said, man thats sa
And the people walk by, cos theyre so blind
And you pay
Still you pay
Its just a soul crying out
Just the people crying out
Its the earth crying out
And I can hear you crying out
And I can feel you crying out
And I say, I dont know
Maybe I dont care
All I know is, I gotta get out of here
And Im going, going any way
Do you know, some place to go
Im getting out of here
Where will I find some peace of mind
Im getting out of here
I come walking to you
I come singing to you
Some sweet day
Im gonna walk away
Im gonna walk away
Its just the soul crying out
Its just the land crying out
Its just the children crying out
All the babies crying out
Any way, some sweet day
Im gonna walk away
Turn away
Its just the soul crying out
Its just the land crying out
I wanna hear
I want you here
Some sweet day
Just a soul crying out
Of a land crying out anyway
When you say
Some sweet day...

Dont Let The Sun Catch You Crying

Dont let the sun catch you crying
The nights the time for your tears
Your heart may be broken tonight
But tomorrow in the morning light
Dont let the sun catch you crying
The night-time shadows disappear
And with them go all your tears
But the morning will bring joy
For every girl and boy, so
Dont let the sun catch you crying
They say that cryings not a bad thing
But stop your crying when the birds sing
It may be hard to discover
That youve been left for another
But dont forget that loves a game
And it can always, always come again
So, dont let the sun catch you crying
Dont let the sun catch you crying
Oh, no, no, no, no

Dont Let em Take Your Gun

Ohhh, people why dont you come in here and let me talk to you a while.
Thats right, step right up and listen to a concerned citizen speak his piece.
Ill tell you a little something that my daddy told to me.
My basic fundamentals if you want to be free.
cause son, theres somthing wrong internally.
So, if you want your freedom son.
Dont want your country to be overrun.
You got to keep america number one.
(chorus)
My daddy told me son, dont let em take your gun.
Thats what they tryin to do.
Son, dont let em take your gun.
Theyre takin your bill of rights away from you.
My daddy said son, dont let em take your gun.
Thats what they tryin to do.
Son, dont let em take your gun.
Dont let em take your gun away from you.
Ohhh, this year is our anniversary.
Two hundred years, people weve been free.
Wont be nobody takin over our land.
If everybodys brothers got a gun in his hand.
Im tellin you we learned to fight for justice.
Were willing to die for freedom.
Hand in hand.
You got to understand.
We are american men.
Said they want your gun.
Said they want your gun.
Send em on the run.
Send em on the run.
Hip-hurray for fun.
Hip-hurray for fun.
If they do were done.
If they do were done.

A Year and A Day

A year and a day
Are all that lay
Between me and
My love

A year and a day
Three months 'til May
The year leaping
Above

A year and a day
You scorn to say
Is destiny
Belov'd

A year and a day
I slight cliché
This puzzle I
Speak of

A year and a day
Do not delay
Migrate to me
My dove

A year and a day
No time astray
Like seconds that
I shove

A year and day
From the same clay
You claim you are
Void of

A year and a day
All night I pray
That you would be

The Language That The Poor Wants To Speak

do you speak good English?
do you take pride in it and then use it to impress others
and swindle them
into a belief that they are inferior?

they have feelings too
of humiliation
which even in such a sad state
wish that their humiliation
speak good English still

they always think that English will give them
a good job
a better standing in the society
a flare of fashionable tongue

you make them cry
but still they want to speak that cry in English too

foolish!

but can you blame them?
you who hold that power and might
you who have taken all what they once had
and made them
worse within
themselves

despite which,
they still want to be like you
to speak like you
a god

how sad!

you have never known the language of love
the grammar of generosity
the syntax of sympathy
that language that good English
sometimes has forgotten
to utter
