Fraulein

Well my fraulein done told me
When I was in goosesteps.
She said I would gas them
And now Im a big man
Filling up autos
That beep at me often
I drop what Im doing
And wait on them cheerfullv
Some choose the big pump
And others the small
Its a small small world
And I hear dem autos call
Well Im a big time pumper
And I pumpem full of my gas
And if you give me static
Ill tell ya blow it up your ass
My station is pretty
I keep it in top shape
The customers dig me
cause I got the answers
To all of their auto needs
I fix em up often
And relieve their tension
cause no one wants an auto
That threatens to lose it
The autos come crawlin
Into my station
They beep at me always
I stop what Im doing
And greet them with smiles
I call fill er up?
They yell back $1.00
I wipe all the dead bugs
And dirt off their windshield
And connect my big hose
Up to their gas tank
The gas hums as it enters
And fulls up their empty tank
I do two at a time now
Ive developed a technique
My timing is very good
If not always precise
I give them a fair deal
They drive off satisfied
We need each others business
Without which we could not survive
We like to trade money-
Because /t means honor,
Not like those people
Who are sick and cant touch it
Because theyre unhealthy,
They leave me cold.
I help who I can help
And feel nothing for those who
Dont come to my station
For Ill only tow those who
Show me their honor
I cant help evervbody
And Im not my brothers keeper
We huddle together
And those who come to me
We huddle together
And despite the weather
We find strength in our circle
Im very important
To the big and the little guy
We all need each other
To keep ourselves going
Their autos all need me
My pumps need their empty tanks and
If the good lord is willing
We shall be here to the end
Pumping-each-other

If You Need Oil

There aint no moon
There aint no stars
Have to close up soon
cause there aint no cars
Got no radio
Got no telephone
Im just awful bored
And Im so alone
Baby, please come to the station
And Ill wipe your windshield clean
If you need oil, Ill give you oil
And Ill fill your tank with gasoline
Baby, please come to the station
You know I get so lonely there
Bring some wine for inspiration
And wear a ribbon in your hair
Hear those dogs bark
Man, they can feel this cold
And its so dark I need your hand to hold
Baby, please come to the station
You know I need you so tonight
Come and put your arms around me
Baby, come and hold me tight
Please, baby, come to the station
Ive taken all that I can take
Baby, how can you be sleeping
When you know that Im awake?

Drive My Car

(LennonMcCartney)
Asked a girl what she wanted to be
She said baby, "Can't you see
I wanna be famous, a star on the screen
But you can do something in between"
Baby you can drive my car
Yes I'm gonna be a star
Baby you can drive my car
And maybe I love you
I told a girl that my prospects were good
And she said baby, "It's understood
Working for peanuts is all very fine
But I can show you a better time"
Baby you can drive my car
Yes I'm gonna be a star
Baby you can drive my car
And maybe I love you
Beep beep'm beep beep yeah
Baby you can drive my car
Yes I'm gonna be a star
Baby you can drive my car
And maybe I love you
I told that girl I can start right away
And she said, "Listen baby I got something to say
I got no car and it's breaking my heart
But I've found a driver and that's a start"
Baby you can drive my car
Yes I'm gonna be a star
Baby you can drive my car
And maybe I love you
Beep beep'm beep beep yeah
Beep beep'm beep beep yeah
Beep beep'm beep beep yeah

Small World

Children seem to have no choice
The children have got no voice
Theyre merely living to grow old
Letting their days unfold
And its time that you and i
Realised that by and by
These children grow up into men
It is clear what we must do
What the lord has told us to
Give our brothers a chance
To be born again
Its a small world, a small world
When you see it through
A pair of haitian eyes
Its a small world, a small world
When the dreams you dream
Melt into haitian skies
Its just not good enough to say
That the troubles too far away
Cos the little that you need to give
Could help a little child to live
Help them live a little longer
Help them grow a little stronger
So why not play a part
If youre ever gonna do
What the lord has told us to
Its got to begin within your heart
Its a small world, a small world
When you reach out and touch
A stranger
From where you stand
Its a small world, a small world
When you can forge another link
In a far off land
Repeat last two lines
Its a small world, a small world
When you can forge another link
In a far off land

Everyone but the butt-rockers knows that aint cool
Got a teen girlfriend and a little mustache
Hes got ol ac/dc coming out of his dash
Hes got himself a black trans am
Well they build em much smaller over there in japan
Beep, beep, beep on monday
Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep on tuesday
Too many fiestas for reuben

Two gallons of tequila is what he got

A Small Cigar

A small cigar can change the world
I know, Ive done it frequently at parties
Where Ive won all the guests attention
With my generosity and suave gentlemanly bearing
A little flat tin case is all you need
Breast-pocket conversation opener
And one of those ciggie lighters that look rather good
You can throw away when empty
Must be declared a great success
My small cigars all vanish within minutes
Excuse me, mine host, that I may visit
A nearby tobacconist
To replenish my supply of small cigars
And make the party swing again
I know my clothes seem shabby
And dont fit this hampstead soiree
Where unread copies of rolling stone
Well-thumbed playboys
Decorate the hi-fi stereo record shelves
If you ask me theyre on their way
To upper-middle-class oblivion
The stupid twits, they roll their only
One cigarette between them
My small cigars redundant now
In the haze of smoking pleasure
Call it a day
Get the hell away
Go down the cafe
For a cup of real tea
By the tube station, theres a drunk old fool
Who sells papers in the rush hour
I hand to him ten small cigars
He smiles, says, ''son, God bless you
A small cigar
Has changed his world, my friend
A small cigar
Has changed the world again
A small cigar . . .

Fashion

Theres a brand new dance but I dont know its name
That people from bad homes do again and again
Its big and its bland full of tension and fear
They do it over there but we dont do it here
Fashion! turn to the left
Fashion! turn to the right
Oooh, fashion!
We are the goon squad and were coming to town
Beep-beep
Beep-beep
Listen to me - dont listen to me
Talk to me - dont talk to me
Dance with me - dont dance with me, no
Beep-beep
Theres a brand new talk, but its not very clear
Oh bop
That people from good homes are talking this year
Oh bop, fashion
Its loud and tasteless and Ive heard it before
Oh bop
You shout it while youre dancing on the ole dance
Floor
Oh bop, fashion
Fashion! turn to the left
Fashion! right
Fashion!
We are the goon squad and were coming to town

In A Beep Beep Race

When I hear them in the traffic,
Go beep beep.
Horns going on,
With a beep beep.
And I wonder where all the people go..
To scurry with flurry so hurried...
They have to constantly beep beep beep!

When I walk it's in a leisurely pace.
I want to take in every bit of a scene.
And when I walk,
I don't frown my face.
Like those in a hurry in a beep beep race.

When I hear them in the traffic,
Go beep beep.
Horns going on,
With a beep beep.
And I wonder where all the people go..
To scurry with flurry so hurried...
They have to constantly beep beep beep!

Call On Me

When the rain is falling and you feel like you are a stranger
And the time is passing you by is a lonely time and you want to fly
Call on me, call on me
Call on me, call on me
I'll be by your side
When you turn around, needing somebody there
Who can give you love and show you good care
If there's a place inside you that's empty and cold
You may need my love, to have, to hold
Call on me, call on me
Call on me, call on me
I'll be by your side
To keep you satisfied
I want to keep you satisfied
Call on me, call on me
Call on me, call on me
I'll be by your side
To keep you satisfied
When the clear light of a winter's day
Blows cold and hard and the future is grey
You can always have the fire of love
To keep you warm as the sun above
Call on me, call on me
Call on me, call on me
I'll be by your side
To keep you satisfied
I'll be by your side
To keep you satisfied
Don't worry about the rain, baby
I'll keep you dry
I'll keep you warm inside
And satisfied
Don't worry about the rain
I'll keep you dry, I'll keep you dry
Call on me, baby, call on me, baby

Big Time

(ian hunter)
One more town on the merry-go-round
One more room with no view
One more punk eatin nothing but junk
Trin to make a phone call to you
Well maybe Ill never, get myself together
But somethings in the back of my mid
It only takes one call-you can laugh at em all
Youre never too small to hit the big time
One more slob feeling sick as a dog
After one more night on the booze
One more dive more dead that alive
Tryin to get my message through
Now, maybe Ill never get my self together
Maybe its the end of the line
But Im having a ball-bouncin off the walls
Youre never too small to hit the big time
Youre never too small, youre never too small
Youre never to small to hit the big time
They can make you crawl, they can make you fall
But youre never to small to hit the big time
Youre never too small, youre never to small
Youre never too small to hit the big time
If youre fat, if youre bald it dont matter at all
cos youre never to small-i said youre never to small
To hit the big time (yes indeed)
(the big time(- limousines)
(the big time)-you can have it all
(the big time)- I say youre never too small
One more crowd shoutin-turn it up loud
One more rose at my feet
One more ring from that cute little thing
One more reason to cheat
Well, maybe Ill never get myself together

Faster Than The Speed Of Night

(jim steinman)
Producer for bonnie: jim steinman
I dont want to let another minute get by
Theyre slipping through our fingers, but were ready to fly
The nightll be our cover and well huddle below
We got the music in our bodies and the radio
And when the morning arrives itll all be gone
Disappearing in (to) the crack of dawn
We better make our move now before the sun is awake
Its time to put up or shut up and to pick up the pace
And I dont want to let another minute get by
Love is going to get us while the moon is in the sky
We may be running out of night, but never running out of steam
Were acting on a hunch, and well be acting out a dream
There really isnt any time to lose
Theyre going to catch us if we wait until it gets too light
Youre such a pretty boy
Let me show you what to do, and youll do it
But you gotta move faster
Faster than the speed of night
Faster than the speed of night
Faster than the speed of night
Its all we ever wanted
And all well ever need
And its slipping through our fingers
Faster than the speed of night
Faster than the speed of night
Faster than the speed of night
Its all we ever wanted
And all well ever need
And its slipping through our fingers
Faster than the speed of night
Faster than the speed of night
Faster than the speed of night
Faster than the speed of night
Faster than the speed of night
Let me show you how to drive me crazy
Let me show you how to make me feel so good
Let me show you how to take me to the edge of the stars and then back again
Youve gotta show me how to drive you crazy
Youve gotta show me all the things you want to happen to you
Weve gotta tell each other everything we always wanted someone to do
I dont want to push you now and I dont want to rush
Were getting closer every second now, but close is not enough
The nightll be our cover and well huddle below
We got the music in our fingers and the radio
There really isnt any time to lose
Were going to lose it if we wait until it gets too light
Youre such a pretty boy
Let me show you what to do, and youll do it
But you gotta move faster
Faster than the speed of night
Faster than the speed of night
Faster than the speed of night
Its all we ever wanted
And all well ever need
And its slipping through our fingers
Faster than the speed of night
Faster than the speed of night
Faster than the speed of night
Its all we ever wanted

Beep Beep Beep

Beep Beep Beep...
These were the sounds
Upon waking...
Tubes everywhere
My God she was intubated!

What had happened?

She couldn't talk
She tried to get
Someone's attention
With her hands

No use

She tried screaming...
Get me out of here
I'm back! ! !

No sound came yet

But her mind
Was ticking over
Beep Beep Beep

Short People

Short people
Short people got no reason
Short people got no reason
Short people got no reason
To live
They got little hands
Little eyes
They walk around
Tellin great big lies
They got little noses
And tiny little teeth
They wear platform shoes
On their nasty little feet
Well, I dont want no short people
Dont want no short people
Dont want no short people
'round here
Short people are just the same
As you and i
(a fool such as I)
All men are brothers
Until the day they die
(its a wonderful world)
Short people got nobody
Short people got nobody
Short people got nobody
To love
They got little baby legs
That stand so low
You got to pick em up
Just to say hello
They got little cars
That go beep, beep, beep
They got little voices
Goin peep, peep, peep
They got grubby little fingers
And dirty little minds
Theyre gonna get you every time
Well, I dont want no short people
Dont want no short people
Dont want no short people
round here

Mirrors Of Our Time

THE ECONOMY is a hose.
The Government collects water from the people
and pours it into the top of the hose
and gives it back to the people.
Near the top of the hose is a hole.
A lot of the water pours out of this into a tank
marked Government which is always empty.
The rest flows down towards the people.
It passes other holes marked
Government Agencies
Government buildings
Government contingencies
Government perks
There are also holes marked
Lawyers
Accountants
Criminals.
The Government is always trying
to stop these last three holes.
Finally what is left of the water
reaches people at the end of the hose.
The people fight over it
(it is never enough) .
When they get very thirsty they start
to throw stones at the government
and threaten to sack them.
The government then reluctantly
pours more water into the top of the hose
(which they get from the people) .
Finally when the people are very thirsty indeed,
under the leadership of the
Lawyers
Accountants
and other Criminals,
they attack the tank marked Government
and break it open.
It is always empty.
Then many of the people die
(except for the Lawyers, Accountants
and other Criminals.)
The survivors go off and look for a new well,
drink as much as they can
as quickly as they can
and wait for a new Government to find them.

Fill Her Up

Words and music by sting
Sting, james taylor chorus
Mobile station,
Where I stand
This old gas pump
In my hand.
The boss dont like me
Face like a weasel,
All on my hands
The smell of diesel.
Here comes the big shot,
Here he comes!
From the city.
God damn!
A v-8 engine
She runs so pretty.
Woo!
Fill er up son
With unleaded.
I need a full tank of gas
Where Im headed
Up in the front seat
A pretty red head,
Were going to vegas
Were gonna get wed
So fill her up son!
Dont be starin!
Yeah thats a real diamond she be wearin.
Im gonna treat my baby one day.
Im gonna fill her up and head out west.
Im gonna find some money alright. yeah
Thats it.
See those tail lights headed west
I got no money
To invest
I got no prospects
Or education
I was lucky to get the job at this gas station
That old cash box
That old cash box
On the top shelf
On the top shelf
The boss is sleeping
The boss is sleeping
Ill just help myself
Lets consider this
As just a loan
I can sort it out later on the phone
Im gonna pick my girl up tonight
Im gonna fill er up and head west
Im gonna show her all the bright lights
Were gonna say we lived fore we come home
And as I head through the woods on the way back
The evening sun is slanting through the pine trees real pretty
Its like I walked into a glade of heaven
And theres music playing
And this money is cold in my hand and voice somewhere says:
why were you going to take that stolen thing?
What real happiness can it bring?
Ahhh ohhhh ahhhh ohhhh
Ahhhohhhh......ohhhh
Youre gonna fill her up with sadness
Youre gonna fill her up with shame
Youre gonna fill her up with sorrow before she even takes your name
Youre gonna fill her up with madness
Youre gonna fill her up with pain
Youre gonna live with no tommorow
Youre gonna fill her up with hate
Youre gonna fill her up darkness
Youre gonna fill her up with light
You gotta fill her up with jesus!
You gotta fill her up with light!
You gotta fill her up with spirit! fill her up!
Youve gotta fill her up with faith
You gotta fill her up with heaven!
Youve got the rest of life to face
Youve gotta fill her up right away
Youve gotta fill her up with faith
Youve gotta fill her up with babies(? !!? )
Youve gotta fill her up with this way
Youre gonna love that girl forever
Your gonna fill her up for life
Youre gonna be her loving husband
She gonna be your loving wife
Youve gotta fill her up with gladness.
You gotta fill her up with joy!
You gotta fill her up with love, you gotta fill her up with love
You gotta fill her up with love

Jimmy Sago, Jackaroo

If you want a situation, I'll just tell you the plan
To get on to a station, I am just your very man.
Pack up the old portmanteau, and label it Paroo,
With a name aristocratic—Jimmy Sago, Jackaroo.

When you get on to the station, of small things you'll make a fuss,
And in speaking of the station, mind, it's we, and ours, and us.
Boast of your grand connections and your rich relations, too
And your own great expectations, Jimmy Sago, Jackaroo.

They will send you out on horseback, the boundaries to ride
But run down a marsupial and rob him of his hide,
His scalp will fetch a shilling and his hide another two,
Which will help to fill your pockets, Jimmy Sago, Jackaroo.
Yes, to fill your empty pockets, Jimmy Sago, Jackaroo.

When the boss wants information, on the men you'll do a sneak,
And don a paper collar on your fifteen bob a week.
Then at the lamb-marking a boss they'll make of you.
Now that's the way to get on, Jimmy Sago, Jackaroo.

A squatter in the future I've no doubt you may be,
But if the banks once get you, they'll put you up a tree.
To see you humping bluey, I know, would never do,
'Twould mean good-bye to our new chum, Jimmy Sago, Jackaroo.
Yes, good-bye to our new chum, Jimmy Sago, Jackaroo.

If He Were Alive Today, Mayhap, Mr. Morgan Would Sit on the Midget's Lap

"Beep-beep.
BANKERS TRUST AUTOMOBILE LOAN
You'll find a banker at Bankers Trust"
Advertisement in N.Y. Times

When comes my second childhood,
As to all men it must,
I want to be a banker
Like the banker at Bankers Trust.
I wouldn't ask to be president
Or even assistant veep,
I'd only ask for a kiddie car
And permission to go beep-beep.

The banker at Chase Manhattan,
He bids a polite Good-day;
The banker at Immigrant Savings
Cries Scusi! and Olé!
But I'd be a sleek Ferrari
Or perhaps a joggly jeep,
And scooting around at Bankers Trust,
Beep-beep, I'd go, beep-beep.

The trolley car used to say clang-clang
And the choo-choo said toot-toot,
But the beep of the banker at Bankers Trust
Is every bit as cute.
Miaow, says the cuddly kitten,
Baa, says the woolly sheep,
Oink, says the piggy-wiggy,
And the banker says beep-beep.

So I want to play at Bankers Trust
Like a hippety-hoppety bunny,
And best of all, oh best of all,
With really truly money.
Now grown-ups dear, it's nightie-night
Until my dream comes true,
And I bid you a happy boop-a-doop
And a big beep-beep adieu.

Back Against The Wall

[bairnson]
Stand up, and with your hand on the bible
Tell the truth to one and all
cause you know that feeling
When youve got your back against the wall.
My god, its only tuesday tomorrow
And loved ones gone and blown it all
Now youve got no money and you feel your back against the wall.
Well, if you talk to your brothers and they dont give a damn
And you look like youre gonna fall
You can call my number when you feel your back against the wall.
Some trippers got you right in a corner
And you feel youre gonna lose it all
Now you dont want trouble but you feel your backs against the wall.
So the guy moves forward but you hold him away
Shit theres no one there to hear you call
So you take your chances and you push him back against the wall.
Now the guys in the gutter and you dont give a damn
And he looks kind of weak and small
cause you called his number when you felt your back against the wall.
Stand up, and with your hand on the bible
Tell the truth to one and all
cause you know that feeling
When youve got your back against the wall.
Well, if you talk to your brothers and they dont give a damn
And you look like youre gonna fall
You can call my number when you feel your back against the wall.

On the Way.

(- what follows is a true story. more a story than a poem. yet, one I have so wanted for so long to tell... -)

On the way
Southbound far into Texas.
It's a long stretch of asphalt,
When the night is late, and so dark
Out on highway 277, moving
From Sonora to Del Rio... and points further south.
Not another soul about,
Just me, my old truck, and the stars.
It's quiet
- and lonely -
Headed down old Mexico way...
Pass a car sitting on the side
- broke down I'm sure -
A coyote with fear and hunger in its eyes
Runs across the road, right in front of me.
Then, a mile or so up, I see him, walking,
Gas can in hand.
I stop, open the door and holler:
' need a lift? '
He simply says: ' gracias ' and climbs aboard.
I pull back out onto the empty road,
Start a conversation,
He smiles, and with very broken English
Does his best to respond.
It takes a spell but I soon understand
He is on his way to Mexico too,
- it is the old homeland for him -
His car ran out of gas,
And most important of all
His wife who is pregnant awaits his return...
in the car!
I offer to go back to get her.
He softly says no... he must get the gas.
The way he speaks, the way he moves,
Lends me to know, this is a gentle, hard-working man
- with a heart as big, and old, as all of Mexico -
More difficult conversation follows,
But, it is so well worth the effort;
I can't say quite why
But I have quickly grown to like and respect this good, simple man
- as if an amigo I've known from old -
He came north to find work,
Provide for his family.
I went south for rest,
And to find meaning.
But, things never work out exactly as planned.
They decided it important to have their nino
- so soon due -
In Mexico, among family, grandparents and such
- this is ofcourse as it should be -
They have little money,
And no friends up here;
If only they can make it back
To Old-Mexico.

Together, me and my new found friend,
Drive deep into the night,
Not once seeing another car.
It's a long, desolate way to a town
With an open gas station.
I am glad for the company of such an honest soul.
He is glad for the ride.
Twice along the journey we see a falling star
- 'good medicine' my red brothers would say -
One for him, and one for me.
Finally a station with lights aglow comes into view.
As we stop, he offers me a dollar
From the small stash of bills he has waded up in his pocket.
I ofcourse refuse,
And offer him much more in return
- ' a gift for the new baby ' I happily say -
or, gas money to get you home.
He smiles, sincerely thanks me,
And gently, proudly refuses.
- I wish he'd take it, I so want to give it -
I tell him I'll wait
And give him a ride back;
I think he feels he has burdened me too much already;
Ofcourse he has not at all,
This ride has been as much for me,
As for him
- God knows -
But, he insists someone here will give him a return ride.
I cannot change his resolute mind.
So, I wish him all the best,
Feeling I should say, and do,
Something more...
But I don't know what;
We shake hands
- and for just a brief moment of grace
we are hermanos, brothers of light in a dark world -
He closes the door.
Turns, with can in hand,
And slowly walks away...
On his own way, back to Old-Mexico.
I pull out onto the road.
The trip is now lonlier than ever.
In my own way, I too
Am on the way,
Back home
- to an old country, where I belong -

It's been nearly 30 years now,
I think of him often.
I wonder if he ever recalls me at all.
I wish I'd have gotten his name
...so I knew who to pray for...
I wish he'd have taken the money
...so his wife would have had enough to eat...
I wish I'd have given him the ride back
...so I knew they were safe...

I wonder how they are.
Did he find work?
Did he get caught up in revolution?
Is he still alive?
Was their child a boy or a girl?
- now a man or a woman -
I'm certain I shall never see him again,
in this world,
Yet, what if someday, by some great chance,
His child and my child should cross paths... along the way,
Fully unaware of the history of it all?
What if somewhere
On a lonley, dark desert night
His child gives my child a ride;
A ride that perhaps
- in ways unknown to any of us -
Saves them... saves us all...

What a deep mystery life is.
Could it possibly be
That every little deed we do,
On our way through,
To wherever it is we go,
Matters in ways
We may never, here, know?
- may we all find the Way,
on our way -
