Free trade consists simply in letting people buy and sell as they want to buy and sell. It is protection that requires force, for it consists in preventing people from doing what they want to do. Protective tariffs are as much applications of force as are blockading squadrons, and their object is the same — to prevent trade. The difference between the two is that blockading squadrons are a means whereby nations seek to prevent their enemies from trading; protective tariffs are a means whereby nations attempt to prevent their own people from trading. What protection teaches us, is to do to ourselves in time of peace what enemies seek to do to us in time of war.

The People of the Eastern Ice, they are melting like the snow--
They beg for coffee and sugar; they go where the white men go.
The People of the Western Ice, they learn to steal and fight;
They sell their furs to the trading-post; they sell their souls to
the white.
The People of the Southern Ice, they trade with the whaler's
crew;
Their women have many ribbons, but their tents are torn and few.
But the People of the Elder Ice, beyond the white man's ken--
Their spears are made of the narwhal-horn, and they are the last
of the Men!

Used Car Sales People
With the gift of the gab they would talk their way out of hell
These used car sales people they know how to sell
On their selling ability their jobs are at stake
The more cars they do sell the more commission they do make
On any deals they clinch they have never lost
And your trust on such people can come at a cost
The more cars they sell the more money they get paid
A hard job to succeed in the used car trade,
Shy and sensitive used car sales people one might say are rare
To sell one a car no effort they do spare
They have to sell cars or their boss them will fire
And other used car yard owners as car sales people them will not hire
The more cars they sell the greater is their pay
So to sell you a car they try every which way.

A Door To World Peace
The door to world peace is open.
All nations are invited to come in.
A welcome mat is available for every one,
And rogue nations may enter again.
The door to world peace is open
And no nation is turned away,
But if few decide not to enter the fold,
Peace will be shortlived in every way.
Peace keepers fill our hearts with hope,
And attempt to dry our heavy tears,
And open hearts for sound relationships
That will last for many delightful years.
A nation that is closed to others
Grows harder than concrete or stone,
And the people who reside there
Are destined to be isolated and alone.
If you slam the door on some nations,
Peace initiatives will continue to cease,
But if all nations are willing to compromise,
What a difference it can make to seek peace?
Skeptical nations will always wonder
How world peace might have been
When the door was open for them to enter,
But they failed to come in.

Good Advice Is Free
Looking up and down the street,
Before one goes across...
May save one's life without the strife.
And prevent paying a cost.
This advice is free.
This advice is free.
No matter what it is one thinks,
Agony is mean.
Nah, nah, nah-nah.
Before you pout and give me looks,
About something I say.
Open up your ears a moment,
Don't push me away.
This advice is free.
This advice is free.
No matter what you think of me...
I'm not your enemy.
Nah, nah, nah-nah.
Why do people get offended,
By a truth that's told.
But lies they seem to cling onto,
And then sell their own souls.
To leave them feeling...so low!
This advice is free.
No fee paid.
This advice is free.
No matter what expense is paid,
Good advice is free.
Nah, nah, nah-nah.
Nah, nah, nah-nah.
Why do people get offended,
By a truth that's told.
But lies they seem to cling onto,
And then sell their own souls.
To leave them feeling....so low!
This advice is free.
No fee paid.
This advice is free.
No matter what expense is paid,
Good advice is free.

Good advice is free.
Good advice is free.
No matter what you think of me...
Good advice is free.
Good advice is free.
No fee paid.
Good advice is free.
No matter what expense is paid,
Think of preventing the agony.
Nah, nah, nah-nah.

Why are people always
Why are people always cheating?
Why are people always fighting?
Why are people always dieing?
Why are people always crying?
Why are people always hating?
Why are people always debating?
Why are people always trading?
Why are people always trying to fit in?
Why are people always cursing?
Why are people always bursting?
Why are people always tripping?
Why are people always not trying to be fair?
Why are people always trying to be dumb?
Why are people always playing too much?
Why are people always misbehaving?
Why are people always do drugs?
Why are people always not trying to have a future?
Why do people always try to ruin their life?
Why?

The Free Trader's Lament
Oft from a trading-boat I purchased spice
And shells and corals, brought for my inspection
From the fair tropics-paid a Christian price
And was content in my fool's paradise,
Where never had been heard the word 'Protection.'
'T was my sole island; there I dwelt alone
No customs-house, collector nor collection,
But a man came, who, in a pious tone
Condoled with me that I had never known
The manifest advantage of Protection.
So, when the trading-boat arrived one day,
He threw a stink-pot into its mid-section.
The traders paddled for their lives away,
Nor came again into that haunted bay,
The blessed home thereafter of Protection.
Then down he sat, that philanthropic man,
And spat upon some mud of his selection,
And worked it, with his knuckles in a pan,
To shapes of shells and coral things, and span
A thread of song in glory of Protection.
He baked them in the sun. His air devout
Enchanted me. I made a genuflexion:
'God help you, gentle sir,' I said. 'No doubt,'
He answered gravely, 'I'll get on without
Assistance now that we have got Protection.'
Thenceforth I bought his wares-at what a price
For shells and corals of such imperfection!
'Ah, now,' said he, 'your lot is truly nice.'
But still in all that isle there was no spice
To season to my taste that dish, Protection.

If we cut up beasts simply because they cannot prevent us and because we are backing our own side in the struggle for existence, it is only logical to cut up imbeciles, criminals, enemies, or capitalists for the same reasons.

I cannot remember a time when the question on so many people's lips was "How can we prevent war?" There is a widespread understanding among the people of this nation, and probably among the people of the world, that there is no safety except through the prevention of war.

Weather Balloons? ? ? ? for friend Thad
I’m just an ordinary guy
who’d like to know the reason why?
The powers that be resort to lies
about the strangers in our skies.
Why do they think they can conceal
what people see with their own eyes
and try to make out they aren’t real.
They wonder why no one complies.
Some may be real and some are not.
Illusions caused by tricks of light
Which will account for quite a lot.
I think that people have the right..
To be allowed to speculate
on what these U.F.Os may be
Not as they have been up to date
Bamboozled systematically.
By governments who all deny
that something strange is going on.
When questioned give the stock reply.
You are mistaken there are none.
Perhaps they’re seeking to prevent
the populace from panicking.
But being cynical I suspect
that they are only dithering.
Because they don’t know what to do.
It’s typical of governments
when they are faced by something new.
The truth leaks out by increments.
A trained observer does not lie
about the things that he has seen.
Strange lights manoeuvring in the sky.
and wonders what they might have been.
Though governments try to suppress
by any means they can conceive.
The right of people to express
what they have seen, what they believe.
I’m just an ordinary guy
I am no expert scientist
but I can see no reason why.
Alien races can’t exist.
Perhaps we are in quarantine
because we are belligerent.
and other races intervene.
From time to time with good intent.
They wait in hope we will mature
and learn to live in peace at last.
But only when they are quite sure
we’ve learned the lessons of the past.
Will they reveal themselves to us.
Not as potential enemies
but neighbours who are curious
and thus resolve the mysteries.

Tradewinds
(macdonald / salter)
Here I stand looking, looking around me
While all around me what do I see
Unhappy faces behind a painted smile
Heartache and loneliness dressed up in modern style
Unhappy people living in sin and shame
Reflections of myself, life is no easy game
Were caught in the trade winds
The trade winds of our time
Here I stand looking, looking around me
While all around me what do I see
Young girls wholl soon become
Streetwalkers in the night
Young boys, the restless breed
Looking for a fight
Children both rich and poor
Theyre searching for the truth
If they dont find it
God help tomorrows youth
Were caught in the trade winds
The trade winds of our time
Trade winds are blowing, blowing around me
While all around me what do I see
Hatred and jealousy
Brotherhood is dying
Love is the answer
But nobodys buying
Good people turning bad
Some dont but they are few
The winds are blowing
The choice is all up to you
Were caught in the trade winds
The trade winds of our time
Yes were caught up in the trade winds
The trade winds of our time
We are riding on the trade winds
The trade winds of our time

Picking It Up
Picking it up.
Picking it up.
Picking it up,
From the middle can be critical.
Picking it up.
Picking it up.
Picking it up...
Like that does not ensure,
Self assurance to occur.
Picking it up.
Picking it up.
Picking it up,
From the middle can be critical.
Picking it up.
Picking it up.
Picking it up...
Like that does not ensure,
Self assurance to occur.
It is a strategy that one should seek.
With satisfaction first examined.
To make sure that one increases harmony!
With a proactive way,
Of life to live.
Picking it up.
Picking it up.
Picking it up,
From the middle can be critical.
It is the heat that one releases.
When nothing satisfies to analyzing eyes...
Only seeing with a vision that's fixed.
As if in a tunnel,
To rip through quick.
It's not a riddle when one plays it second fiddle,
Oh...
Picking it up.
Picking it up.
Picking it up,
From the middle can be critical.
Picking it up.
Picking it up.
Picking it up,
With proactive actions to prevent blurs.
And...
Don't be vague!
Proactive actions do prevent blurs.
Don't be vague.
Proactive actions do prevent,
The making of excuses.
Proactive actions do prevent blurs.
Don't be vague.
Proactive actions do prevent,
The making of excuses.
Proactive actions do prevent blurs.
Don't be vague.
Proactive actions do prevent,
The making of excuses.
Oh...
Picking it up.
Picking it up.
Picking it up,
From the middle can be critical.
Picking it up.
Picking it up.
Picking it up,
One should think of self assurance that endures.

Sonnet: Some Things Will Happen
Who can prevent the fury of Nature?
Who can prevent the clouds from raining down?
Who can prevent God’s pre-destined future?
Who can prevent the artiste turning clown?
Who stops a fruit from ripening in less days?
Who stops the ripened fruit from falling down?
Who stops a seed from sprouting in one place?
Who stops the grass from being daily mown?
Some things in Nature happen so early;
Some things in Nature fail to happen right;
Some things in Nature happen finally;
Who brings the clouds that block the good Moonlight?
There is a time for death and every birth;
There is a time for everything on earth.

The Copenhagen Fiasco
Carbon emissions and hence climate change
Is caused by every nation, developing or developed;
Why developed nations have one target for themselves
And another for the rest of the nations?
Why this discrimination?
Pollution is the result of industrial revolution
Which is started in the west because of which
They became 'developed' and rich;
Now when every nation wants to be hub of industrialization
And part of economy and enjoy fruits of liberalization
Why all these controls and fiasco;
Let subsidies to farmers in some grand unions of nations
And protective measures against free trade amongst nations
By 'rich' nations are withdrawn;
No curbs or controls have been in implementation
All these years and recklessly nature is looted and polluted;
Now wisdom dawns
And curbs only to 'developing and poor' nations;
Is globe the exclusive property of the developed nations
About which they can do according to their whims and fancies
And only the rest of nations must bear the burden;
The highest polluting and carbon-emissions-causing 'rich' nations
Want to dictate the draft for controls
They never feeling part of the controls or curbs
And exclude themselves selectively;
Such uneven world order
Is interesting, amusing, disenchanting and irritating;
Let every one bear the responsibility
Or let the globe warm disastrously;
Selective impositions
Are not implementable
Or welcome
Let the fiasco continue

Now, at more than any other point in recent history, the United Nations is being challenged. If the United Nations has any purpose, it is to prevent war, it is to condemn war, to stop war. That is our job here today. It is the job you were sent here to do – not just by your capitals, but by all of humanity.
