Conservatism, though a necessary element in any stable society, is not a social program; in its paternalistic, nationalistic and power adoring tendencies it is often closer to socialism than true liberalism; and with its traditionalistic, anti-intellectual, and often mystical propensities it will never, except in short periods of disillusionment, appeal to the young and all those others who believe that some changes are desirable if this world is to become a better place.

The only hope of socialism resides in those who have already brought about in themselves, as far as is possible in the society of today, that union between manual and intellectual labor which characterizes the society we are aiming at.

When I look at Social Security, I consider it the most important social program in the United States, arguably the most successful program in the world.

We have among us a class of mammon worshippers, whose one test of conservatism or radicalism is the attitude one takes with respect to accumulated wealth. Whatever tends to preserve the wealth of the wealthy is called conservatism, and whatever favors anything else, no matter what is called socialism.

We must work to stabilize Social Security. We must not gamble with our nation's social insurance program, one of our most popular and effective federal programs that has remained dependable and stable for the past 70 years.

Social Security is not a retirement savings plan; it is a social insurance program. It's a contract that says, as a society, we will look out for you and your family when you can no longer work.

I think experience will teach you a combination of liberalism and conservatism. We have to be progressive and at the same time we have to retain values. We have to hold onto the past as we explore the future.

Today, there are too many points of view of equal value and prestige, each showing the relativity of the other, to permit us to take any one position and to regard it as impregnable and absolute. Only this socially disorganized intellectual situation makes possible the insight, hidden until now by a generally stable social structure and the practicability of certain traditional norms, that every point of view is particular to a social situation.

The Closer You Get
Street lights start to come on
I know that its time
Stop what youre doing
Meet those drinking friends of mine
First lady call me on the telephone
She said get out and die young but Im staying at home
Now I believe in love, I believe that its true
Know Im defenceless when I look into blue
Sleepy eyes down an angels face
Dont worry honey no-ones gonna take your place
The closer you get, the better you look
Throw me a line
cos the closer you get, the more that I see
Well sure have a good time
I know what youre thinking, well how do I feel?
Well theres no rules in my book
Except the closer you get, the better you look
Keep one foot in the showroom, one out of sight
Girl Ive had some close ones but Im doing all right
Gold on her fingers dont mean a thing
Hell do his best to hear that sweet lady sing
Now I got the time if you got the place
Weve got the know how and you got the face
We got the power, we got no shame
Come over baby, I sure do wanna light your flame
cos the closer you get, the better you look
Throw me a line
The closer you get, the more that I see
Well sure have a good time
I know what youre thinking, well how do I feel?
Well theres no rules in my book
Except the closer you get, the better you look

The New Deal is plainly an attempt to achieve a working socialism and avert a social collapse in America; it is extraordinarily parallel to the successive 'policies' and 'Plans' of the Russian experiment. Americans shirk the word 'socialism', but what else can one call it?

The decree of a coercive tribunal would not need to conform to the true standard of wages, the final productivity of social labor. It would introduce into distribution a genuinely arbitrary element, with a very large ultimate power to pervert the natural system.

Call This Whatever You Wish
Call this anti-social.
Call it whatever you believe it is!
But I had awakened one day,
Knowing I was through with nonsense.
And those who participated...
In the distribution of foolishness.
While the quality of life...
And the standards of it diminished.
As those immature around me age,
Condoning it as if it should exist!
Call it whatever you will.
Call this whatever you wish.
Call me anti-social, please!
If a clue I leave...
Says anything about my involvement.
And my need to protect my peace and happiness!

Low Society
A judge a dentist or physician
In this low society
Trade ambition for position
In this low society
Have you heard its in the stars
Next july we collide with mars
Have you heard it in the bars
In this low society
No more pay and lots of leisure
In this low society
Low society
Im just doing what I can
In this low society
But Im an incidental man
In this low society
I give away what others sell
The secrets yours so never tell
cos if you do youll go to hell
Low society
Side by side and always tired
All for one and no-one hired
All thats left is love inspired
Low society
And when the party is complete
And youre still standing on your feet
The taste of victory is sweet
Low society
And darling dont forget
In this low society
To turn off your t.v. set
In this low society
The most important thing at all
In this low society
Is not to stand too tall
In this low society
In this world that never learns
I can see rome as it burns
All the passion and the power
Turns to ash within an hour
No more play and no more pleasure
In this low society
