In The 21st Century

When the river runs dry, what will we say
Na na na na na na na na hey hey
In the 21st century
Oh when the river runs dry, what will we do
Na na na na na na na na oh-hoo
In the 21st century
When the river runs dry, what will we wear
Na na na na na na na na where?
To the 21st century
Now some people sing, some people say
Na na na na na na na na hey hey
Get up off your knees and pray
Pray that the earth dont tire, of the way that were puttin her down
Hope that the universe dont say Im still expanding but your time is up
Some people sing, some people sigh
Na na na na na na na na why?
Why cant we live in peace
Some people sing, some people say
Na na na na na na na na hey hey
In the 21st century
Hope that the earth dont tire, of the way that were puttin her down
Hope the universe dont say - stop spinning around
Hope the world dont say that weve got no place to go
Hope the universe dont say Ill be expanding for a while, you? no!

21st Century Man

A penny in your pocket
Suitcase in your hand
They wont get you very far
Now youre a 21st century man.
Fly across the city
Rise above the land
You can do most anything
Now youre a 21st century man.
Though you ride on the wheels of tomorrow (tomorrow)
You still wander the fields of your sorrow
What will it bring?
One day youre a hero
Next day youre a clown
Theres nothing that is in between
Now youre a 21st century man.
You should be so happy
You should be so glad
So why are you so lonely
You 21st century man?
You stepped out of a dream
Believing everything was gone
Return with what youve learned
Theyll kiss the ground you walk upon.
Things aint how you thought they were
Nothing have you planned
So pick up your penny and your suitcase
Youre not a 21st century man.
Though you ride on the wheels of tomorrow
You still wander the fields of your sorrow (sorrow)
Tomorrow, 21st century man
21st century man
21st century man...

A Poem Of Syntax

A poet and his bird, his dog, his cat and his tree
A poet and the bird in the tree
A poet and his dog in the tree
A poet and his dog in the tree and the wind and the cloud
The bird in the tree, the dog in the tree, the cat in the tree,
The bird in the tree, the dog on the tree, the cat under the tree,
The bird on the tree, the bird in a tree, a bird in a tree, a bird in the tree,
And the wind and the cloud and the poet and his dog and his cat and the tree

The dog chases the cat the cat chases the bird
And they all arrive in that tree
Where the poet is sitting under that tree
The poet takes the dog and the cat was envious
And the bird looks at them in silence
The silence looks at the poet in the eye
Of the cat and the bird flies away
The poet and the dog is the poem of friendship
The cat and the dog is the poem of the endless natural quarrels
And the bird that flies away against the cat and the dog and the poet and the tree
And flies against the wind that the bird is now fighting
And the clouds that seem so blue and blue

The bird that actually flies away
Is actually me
I was not the poet with the dog

I am not the tree I am not the wind I am not the cloud I am not the poet there who had a dog as friend and I was not the quarrelsome thing from the blue and out of the blue

I am the bird with wings and I always fly away to places
Against the wind to places where I can be as always be the bird with wings in silence

The Elf Singing

An Elf sat on a twig,
He was not very big,
He sang a little song,
He did not think it wrong;
But he was on a Wizard's ground,
Who hated all sweet sound.

Elf, Elf,
Take care of yourself.
He's coming behind you,
To seize you and bind you
And stifle you song.
The Wizard! The Wizard!
He changes his shape
In crawling along--
An ugly old ape,
A poisonous lizard,
A spotted spider,
A wormy glider
The Wizard! The Wizard!
He's up on the bough
He'll bite through your gizzard,
He's close to you now!

The Elf went on with his song,
It grew more clear and strong;
It lifted him into air,
He floated singing away,
With rainbows in his hair;

While the Wizard-Worm from his creep
Mad a sudden leap,
Fell down into a hole,
And, are his magic word he could say,
Was eaten up by a Mole.

This Is The 21st Century

(...if you could only see what Ive seen with your eyes)
A wise man once said
A flower is only
A sexual organ
Beauty is cruelty
And evolution
A wise man once said
That everything could be explained with mathematics
He had denied
His feminine side
Now where is the wisdom in that?
I came just as fast as I could
Through the dirty air
Of your neighbourhood
Your name on a grain of rice
Hangin around my neck
And a head like lead
This is the 21st century
I heard everything they said
The universe demystified
Chemicals for god
This is the 21st century
I heard everything they said
A wise man once wrote
That love is only
An ancient instinct
For reproduction
Natural selection
A wise man once said
That everything could be explained
And its all in the brain
We lay on a velvet rug
By the open fire
She blew air on my eyelids
I cried whats it all about?
As she kissed my hair
She said there, there..
This is the 21st century
I heard everything you said
The universe demystified
Astronomy instead
This is the 21st century
Cant you get it through your head
This aint the way it was meant to be
Magic isnt dead
Come to bed
Come to bed
And rest your heavy head my love..
And slowly, from above,
She showed the answers something that cant be written down
This is the 21st century
Flash to crash and burn
Nobodys gonna give you anything
For nothing in return
Theres a man up in a mirrored building
And he just bought the world
Would you want
To have kids
Growing up
Into whats left of this?
She shook her head,
She said cant you see?
The world is you
The world is me.

The Corer

Like coagulant poetry,
This congealed core of universe,
Became the spider,
Multi-dimensional as it grew;
In the form of a great web,
Masquerading as heavy matter,
Of condensed time,
Of condensed memory,
Like coagulant poetry,
This congealed core of universe.

Like curdled helium,
Amidst thin hydrogen left behind,
Bubbles and illusions,
To be the center of Sun,
Like coagulant poetry,
To be the solar spider.

We in this congealed core of universe,
Effervesce no longer;
To weave the rainbow of human web,
To create the unforeseen,
The super-spider,
This rainbow of human web,
Textured by heavy genes,
Begotten of coagulant poetry.

Yet some delight in cored poetry,
In coring of this bubbled universe,
In coring of coreless illusions.

Liberation Seeker

The following poem is the translation of my hindi poem Mumukhshu from the book Sab Rang
.--0-

Twentieth century
at the fag end of life
standing & waiting
to turn into history
still in two minds
thinking what to say
and to gift
twenty-first century
on its birthday.

Nuclear holocaust & nuclear proliferation?
warning on depletion of ozone?
class and color struggle?
devalued or hollow speeches
on environmental degradation?
or
the human race
which has lost its sense
in the murky world of
separatism, terrorism & extremism
playing into the hand of cancer, AIDS and drugs
yet wearing a mask of humanity and concern
weeping for fellow human beings.

Suddenly
twentieth century smiled
an aura surrounded it
springing new hope
why? why?
after all why?
twenty-first century be birthed by it
why it shouldn’t allow 21st century
to stand on it own foundation
let 21st century build itself de-novo
without the crutches of 20th century.

So without notice
20th century found solace into oblivion
into time and history
allowing 21st century to emerge
with a new dawn
liberation seeker
waiting to liberate itself
from its previous deeds
------------.

Here Come The 90s

Talk about the world
I see it everyday
Talk about your heart
And things we have to say
I can here the whales
Whisper in the trees
I can hear their hearts
Calling out to - me
I can hear the waves
Breaking through your heart
I can hear your voice
Calling from the start
I can feel the wheels
Turning up ahead
I can see your voice
Telling me whats there
And the rivers not too wide heavy dreaming on the other side
In the summer well collide as lovers
Talk without words
We do it all the time
Talking with your heart
Melting into mine
Talk about the boys
When you talk about the girls
I can hear their voice
Ripping round the world
And the rivers not too wide heavy dreaming on the other side
In the summer well be fine like two lovers with a pair of eyes
In the summer well collide as lovers
Here come the 90s yeah, yeah, yeah!
Here come the 90s
Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah (yeah, yeah, yeah!)
Here come the 90s yeah, yeah, yeah!
Here come the 90s
Oooh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah (yeah, yeah, yeah!)
Here come the 90s yeah, yeah, yeah!
5 4 3 2 1 in the 21st century
(yeah!, yeah!, yeah!)
In the 21st century
(yeah!, yeah!, yeah!)
In the 21st century
Yeah! yeah! (yeah!, yeah!, yeah!)
In the 21st century
(yeah!, yeah!, yeah!)
In the 21st century
Yeah! yeah! (yeah!, yeah!, yeah!)
In the 21st century

feeling the sun circling round me
and all the inaccuracies it cast onto me

reading a 20th century poem
feeling the earth circling round the sun

and the privilege to play with its power

For those of us who have lived abroad and seen our nation in a highly competitive 21st century, and kind of see where this world is going - unless we are able to strengthen our core, we're going to see the end of the American century. And that is totally unacceptable.

Can't Have You

I been hoping
To be with you and each and everyday
I give you everything I have to offer, but you don't care
I don't want to let you go
I love you so much
Every time I go sleep
I can't because I dream about you and
How you are gone and not here with me
You are always on my mind
If I know I
Can't have you
I won't love anyone, but you baby
I forget every guy, but you
I will love you forever and ever
I look deep in my heart and
I know you are the one
You got something special
You make me addict to you
You are like poison ivy that I can't scratch away
Now is summer
My chances are over
You are gone
I want to cry now
Bye baby
I will miss you, and
I always think about you
You are so special to me
If I know I
Can't have you

Worldwide Web Of Mind

The spider with which, with whom,
I share the sunshine of these late summer days
and the front garden – though in truth,
the silver filigree denies me two-thirds of it,
so broad the span of this ambitious engineer –

the spider which or who has grown so large
that its claws are some rapacious hawk in miniature,
almost scary in their taloned, threatening curve,
and which yesterday sat immobile in the centre of its web
either sleeping, or awaiting, or perhaps both,

is not there today; and I recall that yesterday
it had a silvery bag attached to it, which now I guess
could be some exquisite womb worn like a jewelled pride
which needs no protection..the web’s undamaged
so surely no marauding bird has pecked the spider
from the undamaged centre of this web?

Where has the spider chosen, for its special day,
Its birthing place, its private ward –
and does it have its huge emotions in miniature,
its pride, its special love, around that tiny thing?
There is no clue; the guy-ropes of its web are silent.
Will I see it in the next few days
teaching its baby all its circus tricks,
abseil, swing, launch in the wind to far-off unknown lands?

Or is it true that, having borne a little brood,
this creature, so magniificent,
gives its life to them, to c arry on the silken line?
does it know that sacrifice it makes
which is as noble as that of any man?
and will its brood also carry in their blood
a memory, inherited, that there,
across the front garden, six feet from East to West,
that silken line their mother made -
their only inheritance from her, apart from life itself,
awaits their darning needle?

I inspect carefully the web, as one might inspect
and read the menu for some blind lunching friend;
amused a little, embarrassed a little, solemn a little,
as the Creation’s relative dimensions
shrink, expand, draw me into the web of universal mind;
a filigree humility; a life not owned but shared.

21st Century War

another little lethal step
another little blatant threat
another political point to score
it’s a 21st century war

Standing here right on the brink
ain't gonna be the first to blink
so absolutely deadly sure
in a 21st century war

no one is innocent don’t pass the blame
don’t dare to shout “not in my name”
wherever you’re going from wherever you came
we’re all players in this deadly game

you can close your eyes but you cannot sleep
got a whirlwind storm to reap
now it’s right at your front door
it’s 21st century war

don’t hope for peace too late for that
come dance the two step tit for tat
now everybody takes the floor
it’s a 21st century war

don’t come crying don’t look sad
you can wish it ain’t so till it drives you mad
it ain’t too good but it ain’t all bad
just count the blessings that you’ve had

one step up two steps back
defend your right to massive attack
might is right in international law
it’s a 21st century war

how hard is it? what’s to learn
people we kill will kill in return
no one is safe anywhere anymore
it’s a 21st century war

get the gear and display the brand
get your head deep in the shifting sand
no need to listen with a gun in your hand
it’s the only language that they understand

no room for doubt no margin of error
who can you trust in the war on terror
say goodbye to the freedoms you’re fighting for
it’s a 21st century war

is it stupidity? is it a joke?
The more it’s fixed the more it’s broke
Is this the way to make the world secure?
it’s just a 21st century war

no one is innocent don’t pass the blame
you can shout all you like that it’s “not in your name”
you keep the winnings all the same
we’re all players in this deadly game

today four hundred children died
you don’t need bombs for infanticide
keep em scared and keep em poor
it’s a 21st century war

peace freaks march and the politico’s talk
and whistleblowers take a final walk
singers write songs cartoonists draw
it’s a 21st century war

and nobody knows what the truth is now
what happened when and why or how
and what is anyone fighting for
it’s a 21st century war

it’s a programme repeat it’s an old old story
good against evil the power and the glory
it’s all just recycled we’ve been here before
it’s an eco-logical 21st century war
