Wellcome

Tabloids, Henry Wellcome often said,
are better than a liquid or a powder;
by tabloids he meant not material read
in broadsheets, or the gutter press that’s louder
than New York Times or NPR, but pills
we tend to take unless we need injections
to get relief from all the pains and ills
that tickle tabloids’ major predilections.

Inspired by an article on the exhibition of the collection of medical memorabilia gathered by Henry Wellcome, exhibited at the Wellcome Collection at 183 Euston Road, London (Ed Rothstein, New York Times,1/29/08 ('One Man's Jigsaw Puzzle, Capturing an Odd Word') ,

It's really easy to avoid the tabloids. You just live your life and don't hang out with famous people who are in the tabloids. Don't do anything controversial and be a normal person. Have friends. And get a job and keep working.

New York Morning, Glimpse of Beauty

Sunrise, and I read the New Yorker magazine
its poems not of the city, even might
have written them myself, it seems

The heat grows, I toss out the New York Times
Vade Mecum of commute, tired of the weight
of business and estate, pages that I never use

And now the New York streets, unforgiving
red-light-jumping cars, pedestrians running on
adrenalin and wheels, upending

all the slow, a boy on crutches
baby carriage
scattered in their haste

to steal a march upon
the New York morning sun
And even those possessed

of lifetime wage employment can't resist
the caffeine-driven New York state of mind
the traffic cops, tabloids and terror plots

I tell myself, look up, construction in the sky
precise design and accident, human-conceived
magnificence, the fragile towers, peaks

beloved Chrysler spire, a beauty glimpsed
at last, the New York windows to the sun
and clouds where passengers no longer fly.

Queen Of The Tabloids

Chorus:
Im the queen of the sleazy tabloids
I rule the trashy kingdom
Like lady di they make sure I am never left alone
Papparazzi and reporters stalk me from the shadows
Making sure to kepp my royal assetts on my throne
Oh they talk about the lovers
That I keep undercover
And I wish that I was as much fun
As they have you believe
Just like alec baldwin
Id love to whack em all one
But instead Ill wait and see
Who I am sleepin with next week
Im the queen of the sleazy tabloids
And I rule the trashy kingdom
But the rumors raise my cue score
And pay for my big home
I guess I augt to sue them
But instead I guess Ill use them
To keep me in the spotlight
And keep me on my throne
Cause Im the queen of the sleazy tabloids

The Wellcome Foundation offered me the chance to establish a small academic research unit, modestly funded, but with total independence. The real opportunity, however, came from King's College, London.

Well, honestly, both my husband and I tend to ignore the tabloids. We see them every once in awhile or it comes to our attention that we are in a tabloid for one reason or another. But it's always false.

In the last 15 or 20 years, I've watched the British press simply go to hell. There seems to be no limit, no depths to which the tabloids won't sink. I don't know who these people are but they're little pigs.

I don't buy the tabloids, but you're surrounded by it all and people tell you things they've read. I'd be sitting on a train looking over someone's shoulder and thinking: That's familiar... oh my God, it's me.

A Heart In New York

New york
To your tall skyline I come
Flying in from london
To your door
New york
Lookin down on central park
Where they say you should not wander
After dark
New york
Like a scene from all those movies
But youre real enough to me
But theres a heart
A heart that lives in new york
A heart in new york
A rose on the street
I write my song to that city heartbeat
A heart in new york
Love in her eye
An open door and a friend for the night
New york
You got money on your mind
And my words dont make a dimes
Worth a difference
So heres to you new york
New york
Now my plane is touching down

Chill Out, Mr Poet! !

I'm sure your poetry is good
And I'd like to help you if I could,
But you're too intense and too sincere,
Why not relax and have a beer?

You say the Truth will 'set me free',
It's all very well but can't you see
Football and lager and T.V.
Mean more than Jesus Christ than me!

Why don't you read the daily news?
It'll cure you of these silly blues,
The tabloids are for recreation,
And there's nothing wrong with masturbation! !

I must say, you gave me a fright
When you came in here looking so uptight -
There's no solution, take my word,
Our little lives are quite Absurd! !

New York Times

New york poor new york
New york poor new york
Cars choking your child to death
But you dont wanna see
Cause you only think about yourself
How blind can you be
New york poor new york
Sniper on the rooftop new york
New york poor new york
Not fit for a dog in new york
Everybody bites on the big apple
Leave the hungry in tears
But no one gives a damn no one really cares
How they feel theyre just paper people not real
You need a gun to walk into new york
Now youre broke and youre out on a ledge
Who can help you this time
Now youre down to your very last cent
Still youre askin me who was your friend
I was your friend
New york poor new york
Who turned the lights out in new york
New york poor new york
Just another blackout in new york
Girl dead on the 26th floor
But no one knew her name
Found her body behind the door
Too young for the game
New york poor new york
Devils in the subway new york
New york poor new york
New york poor new york
Talkin talkin talkin - watch out
Harlem touching midtown new york
New york poor new york
Talkin bout new york new york
Moneys getting tighter new york
Theyre burning the bridges to new york
