The Fable of 'Belling the Cat', Modern Version
Five judges at a cat show
were in a conference room
when the lights went out.
The cat being judged
was coal black and
only could be seen
when it opened its eyes,
and of course the cat was asleep.
While waiting for the lights to come on,
the conversation turned to nutrition
and as most cat show judges
must have another occupation,
it turned out that each
considered himself and herself
an authority on diet for humans.
Such it was that the cat and nutrition
became the subject of discussion
because nutrition is not unlike
a black cat in a dark room.
The judges were sure
that the cat must be found and caught
before someone opened the door,
and it escaped.
If only it had a bell attached to its collar,
How much easier it would be.
The first judge,
a Health Food Faddist, said,
'I see it.
Having particularly acute eyesight
because of my diet
of carrots and carrot juice,
I will tell you where the cat is
and someone can easily
catch and hold it.
There by the table end is the cat.'
Alas, because no one else could see,
the first one to attempt to catch the cat,
tripped over a chair and
the cat raced about the room and
Found a new place to hide.
'It's just like you all
to dismiss the value of natural foods,
see what it has gained you.'
With that the Food Faddist
sat brooding at the table,
contemplating her new diet book.
'But wait.' Said the Medical Doctor.
'None of you has a clue
on how to catch a cat.
I spent long hours in Medical School
after taking my pre-med degree in sociology.
I understand the way the body functions.
Food is just so much
coal to stoke the furnace,
and I know what you should eat.'
'Humbug.' said the Food Faddist,
'You took not one course in nutrition! '
'True, ' said the Doctor,
'But with my great Aristotlean knowledge,
I can tell you much about the cat.
I having studied the muscle structure
of such as this black cat possesses,
and can tell you exactly how to catch him.
You must grasp him behind the head,
by the scruff of the neck
just as his mother carried him.'
'If you can't see him,
how are you to catch him? '
Asked the Business Man
who represented a major food manufacturer.
'Why with my stethoscope,
I can hear his heart beat
and lung function;
I will locate him and then catch him.'
Moments later,
'I have him'
(But of course, he didn't.)
The Business Man having been
deceived many times before,
and knowing full well the ways
of professionals stepping
outside their area of expertise
to take a megaphone
to shout their views,
scoffed at the Doctor,
and said, 'We all know that
you haven't a clue
as to where the cat is,
or what good nutrition
is for that matter.
I will bell the cat.
All it takes is a bit of
imaginative selling,
and I can attract any kind
and number of animals.
Promotion is what it's about,
nutrition or otherwise.
You sell the sizzle
before you sell the steak, '
and with that he began to call loudly,
'here, kitty, here, kitty.'
And almost at once,
'Got him! '
(But of course, he didn't.)
'I know you don't have the cat,
for I am holding him in my lap, '
said the Very Important News Person.
'You know nothing about cats,
publicity, nutrition or
anything else going on in this world.
Without me to interpret,
and bring it to everyone's attention,
nothing would get done.
It falls on my shoulders
to explain good nutrition so
teachers and parents will understand
what's good for them (and the children) .
I have read summaries
of all the important new science
that has to do with health,
welfare, education, government, personal surveys
(I could go on and on,
and shall if you all will just
shut up and listen.) '
She made a purring sound,
much like a cat would make,
and exclaimed, 'I have the cat'.
(But of course, she didn't.)
Which brings us to the Governmental Agency Executive
who served on these committees
so that he could use
the very generous vacation and sick leave
allocated to one who worked for the Government.
He said, 'It is clear to me
that without regulations,
the cat will go free
and possibly be harmed,
I know how to handle these issues.
Didn't I give you the revised food pyramid
that stood conventional wisdom on its ear,
although I admit, it is a bit difficult
to understand how slices of a pyramid standing on end,
creates a very substantial structure.
And didn't I give you revised grades for beef
which made the lower quality beef more desirable,
(and just by changing the names!)
And didn't I make you all feel better
when I announced that 'mad-cow-disease'
was nothing to worry about.
And, didn't I define what 'natural foods' are,
and, working with the Food and Drug Administration
and the Communicable Disease Center,
didn't I solve the problems of disease management.
Trust me, I will show you where the cat is
and I know how to capture him
and save him from the hostile environment
he finds himself in.'
And with that,
he reached over
and plugged in the extension cord,
which he had pulled from the wall
when he tripped over it.
But the projector's lamp did not light.
For you see,
he tripped over the cord
after the lights went out.
At about this time,
the building janitor
hearing shouting coming
from the conference room,
opened the door and
asked why the 'judges'
were sitting in the dark.
'Shut the door! '
They all cried.
Which he did.
And to this day,
the five nutrition experts
are in the darkened room.
Having starved together.
But how about the cat, you ask.
Not to worry,
he escaped out the door
when the janitor opened it.
And without a bell, I might add.

No Food
I wake up every morning
stomach growling
No food to eat but
Momma won't let me tell nobody
Not even Jesus
When Momma leaves I'm happy because
For a second I think
That when she comes back
She'll have something to eat
But still-no food
The Roman Noodles are gone
Momma ate the last pack this morning
And I'm getting weaker
By the moment
Because there is no food
And when I get to school
I sneak to the bathroom and cry
My friends ask what's wrong
I tell them it's something in my eye
And- they believe me
And when I go home
Which is this abandoned house off in the woods
I hug my Momma because I know she did
The best she could with what she had
It just didn't work out
I didn't blame her because she
Put her trust in a man who
Not only verbally abused her but beat her, too
Which is why I entitle this poem No Food
She apologizes to me everyday
I ask het the reason why
But all she does is close her eyes and cry
And I wash those tears from her eyes
No food
Momma there's no reason to cry
I tell her; and she holds my hand
As tight as she possibly can
And says one day I will understand
And still- we have no food
She dies
Right there in my arms
Ironically the same place she held
Me- in her arms
The day I was born
No food, no lights,
No one around to hear
Finally, all her pain is gone
After all of these years

I Am Laura's Stomach
I Am Laura’s Stomach
It’s Monday morning, she’s got up.
When I asked her for breakfast
she told me to shut up.
When I asked her for my porridge
or at least for an orange
she told me to keep quiet
as from today she was on diet.
She has noticed cellulite
and decided to get rid of it.
In the day time it was a real crime,
she didn’t put anything inside me,
so, I thought to remind her about me.
I switched on the gurgling of my gastric juice
(after all I had nothing to lose)
at an average speed,
hoping she would hear me and would feed.
But nooooo! My anger began to grow.
I decided to strengthen the gurgling, the rumbling,
and…added a little bit of sound.
At last she looked around
and found a cabbage leaf,
I quickly digested it and cried:
I want beef!
At night when she went to sleep
I had only one wish – to weep.
I saw sweet dreams when she lived with her parents,
I thought she had inherited their habits.
How happy I was!
We always had the 1st, the 2nd and the 3rd course.
But hell! It was not for her so well!
She told them she had already grown
that’s why she could live on her own.
What else could I say?
The same story happened the next day.
I was very, very angry
because I was very hungry.
I’ve been shouting during the whole day:
Where is my salad?
Where is my soup?
Soon you won’t see me even through a loupe.
On Thursday in the day time
she gave me some plums.
But what’s happened with me? Was I really a numb?
I was so week, I felt so sick.
Without any questions, without any digestions
I’ve passed all the plums to the bowels
for them to know the particulars.
Next morning in the bathroom
I said goodbye to all those horrible fruit.
Do you know what ‘s happened then?
She gave me some yogurt.
My God! – I thought,
now she becomes better and better.
May be I’ll be a little bit fatter?
But…anyway…it’s early to shout “hurray”.
On Saturday she went to the restaurant with her boyfriend.
I didn’t want to offend her, so I kept quiet,
I so much desired to eat
a good piece of meet, something sweet.
You know that I didn’t eat for the whole weak.
“You look good, but you are very thin,
you have to take some food and it’s not a sin”-
the guy said with a grin.
I thought he was the greatest lad
and my dearest Laura was just mad.
It was late at night when she felt bad.
I was also feeling sad.
Martini, mushrooms, potato, beef…
all that nice food decided to leave.
Shut up, lever! She is clever!
Everything is under control,
she knows that I hate alcohol.
At night, with a little bit of fight,
I said goodbye to all the food she ate
without any regret.
Now I know: she doesn’t like to be fat.
Next morning she drank only mineral water,
her boyfriend has brought for her.
And I certainly kept quiet.
What more can I say?
We are on diet.

Prayer IV
DMX]
Let us pray
Father God I am just learning how to pray, so bear with me
First I thank you for the life of everyone that's here with me
Then I thank you for the love you give me, why?
I don't know; I don't deserve it, and it hurts inside
Many a nights I cried, and called your name out loud
But didn't call you when I was doin good, I was too proud
And STILL you gave me love, I wasn't used to that
Most of the people that gave me love, they ended up takin it back
That's somethin new to me, so I'm askin you for time to adjust
Let me make it there, I will be one you can trust
What I stand for, I put my life on, I DO!
I guess what I'm askin is - show me how to stand for you
And I will RAP for you, SING for you, PREACH for you, TEACH for you
REACH for you - I will love you like you love me, unconditionally
And I will ALWAYS be prepared, for whatever the mission'll be
GIVE THE NUTRITION TO ME, and I'll properly digest it
And when I give it back, I'll show you word well invested
And whenever I go, BEFORE I GO, let me give
Thanks to you Lord, my birth, for every day that I've lived
You gave me a love most of my life I didn't know was there
IN THE NAME OF JESUS! I give you my life, cause you care

The Beef Epitaph
This is what it was: Sometime in the recent but until now unrecorded
past, it was decided by certain ingenious and commercially forward-looking
cattle-ranchers in a certain large, modern Western nation which prides itself
on being nutritionally forward-looking, that since people are increasingly
nutrition-conscious, and increasingly insistent that "you are what you
eat," all cattle on the way to market were to be marked with brief
descriptive tags noting the favorite food of each animal; and also stating
approximately how much each ate of it. This, it was felt, would both delight
the diner and comfort the nutrition-conscious consumer: people would be able to
tell exactly what kind of flavor and texture of beef they were purchasing
beforehand, and always be able to secure exactly the kind of product most
likely to delight their taste, since they would know a whole lot more than ever
before about the quality and kind of nourishment which the animal had received
(it was a little like our own, well-established, present-day modern American
system of catering to preferences for light and dark meat in chicken--by
supplying each part shrink-wrapped in a separate bag in the supermarkets). The
system set up by those ingenious and commercially forward-looking
cattle-ranchers was remarkably efficient; and seemed--at least at first--to be
destined for success. This is how it worked: First, on each animal's
last day on the ranch, they attached the main, or so-called "parent"
tag--made out according to information provided by each rancher, or their hired
hands, or even (in some cases) their immediate family--to each head of
livestock. The information contained on each tag would be of course be
definitive, since it was compiled just before the two or three days required
for shipment of the animal to the slaughterhouse--during which travel time, of
course, the animal customarily doesn't eat anything, anyway.... Once at the
slaughterhouse, they carefully removed the "parent tags"; and during
the slaughtering, mechanically duplicated them numerous times, preparing
perhaps hundreds of tiny labels for each animal. Immediately afterwards, at the
packing plant, these miniature, or "baby" tags were affixed,
respectively to the proper bodily parts--each section of each animal being
separately and appropriately tagged, each as if with an epitaph. But then
something went wrong with this means of delighting the diner, and of comforting
the nutrition-conscious consumer. At first, quite predictably, the tags came
out reading things like "Much grass, a little moss, medium grain" and
"Much grass, much grain, generally ate a lot." And this, as one might
expect, proved (at least at first), a great pleasure to purchasers! But then
tags began coming through reading things like "A little grass, a little
grain, many diverse scraps from our table"; and "She was our favorite
pet--gave her all we had to give"; and there was even one (featured at
dinnertime one evening on network television news) which was tear-stained and
which said, in a child's handwriting, "Good-bye, Little Blackie Lamb,
sorry you had to grow up--I'll sure miss you!" And so, gradually, despite
its efficiency, this system somehow ceased to delight the diner, and comfort
the nutrition-conscious consumer. And this is how the practise of The Beef
Epitaph became generally neglected over the course of time; and how the members
of a large, nutrition-conscious, and otherwise generally quite sophisticated
modern nation very much like our own, came to eat their beef--as indeed they
still do today--partially or even totally blindfolded.

Petty news, its only your bad ear
It might be worth it
To watch what you hear
Feeling great now you expand your view
You cant forget, somebody hates you
Justify my worst behaviour
Search in blood-lines
Exchange a favor

Bad nutrition
Rely on me
Theres one condition

Rely on me

With more than 1 in 8 Americans now on food stamps, participation in the program has jumped about 70 percent from 26 million in May 2007, while the nation's unemployment rate rose from 4.3 percent to 9.2 percent through September of this year.

Make It All Okay
You threw away the ballast and you rowed your boat ashore
Didn't you, now? Didn't you?
You made your ultimatum too big to ignore
Didn't you, now? Didn't you?
So you worked out your excuses,
turned away and shut the door.
The world's too vast for us now,
and you wanted to explore
It's a long, long long road
And I don't know which way to go
If you offered me your hand again I'd have to walk away.
When I saw you at the street fair, you called out my name
Didn't you, now? Didn't you?
You said we could start over, try and make it all okay.
Didn't you, now? Didn't you?
So our past has been rewritten
and you threw away the pen.
You'd said that I was useless,
but now you'll take me in again
Well Jesus loves me fine.
And your words fall flat this time.
Was it my imagination, or did I hear you say,
"We don't have a prayer between us."
Didn't you believe that I have finally turned away?
Didn't you, now? Didn't you?
Anything to hold onto to help me through my day.
Didn't you, now? Didn't you?
Jesus loves me fine.
But his words fall flat this time.
It's a long, long long road
And I don't know which way to go
If you offered me your world, did you think I'd really stay?
If you offered me the heavens, I would have to turn away.
Was it my imagination, or did I hear you say,
"We don't have a prayer between us."
Didn't you, now? Didn't you, now?
Didn't you?

Pavlov's Dog: Advanced Lesson
Pavlov was a psychologist, I think
Who supplied his dogs with food and drink
But always preceded the giving of the victuals
By ringing a bell, that was his ritual
The dogs became conditioned and would be begin salivating
Upon hearing the bell, which to the food they were relating
Their mind was programmed by this little tinkle
Though they didn't realise it, they had no inkle
The noise of a bell, though it didn't taste or smell like food
Got these dogs in a very hungry mood
Just like smokers are conditioned to relax and unwind
By inhaling noxious fumes which only confuse their mind

Overweight with Food
Are you just a tub of lard and
Vastly overweight?
Do you think that when you die you'll
Need a piano crate
To act as coffin for your frame? -
Chosen as you die in shame, with
Only you to take the blame
For years of eating much the same:
A daily calorific fest
Gourmands of your ilk digest!
Is your heart in final fling and
Nearly set to burst?
Are your arteries bunged and clogged and
Feeling now the worst
For wear? - your aneurysm fit to blow
While blood as thick as rising dough
Cries 'Halt! ' to any hope of flow:
A dreadful state to put on show
In front of any nurse!
Best you hail a hearse.

Give You What You Want
Why didn't I call, why didn't I fall
Why didn't I hang my heart on your wall
Why didn't I know, why didn't I show
All my feelings from the word go
So if you love me, don't leave me
I promise that you'll never lack
'Cause this man's on his knees,
begging' please
Baby turn your back, yeah
I'll give you what you want
I'll do anything to make you mine
If you give me what I want
I will be yours to the end of time
Girl you won't be sorry
And you won't regret it
There's no need to worry, only if you let it
Why didn't I say, the thing that I read
Why didn't I see the signs in my head
Why didn't I speak, to you last week
When I saw you walking down my street
So if you love me, don't leave me
Alone here to die on this track
Girl rescue me, let's get this train
And we'll never look back
[Chorus]
Girl you won't be sorry
And you won't regret it
There's no need to worry, only if you let it
Oh, wow I can't let go
Oh, wow, I swear I'll take it slow
[Chorus (repeat)]

Pulled Up
Mommy, daddy, come and look at me now
Im a big man in a great big town
Years ago who would believe its true
Goes to show what a little faith can do
I was complaining, I was down in the dumps
I feel so strong now cause you pulled me up!
Pull me up up up up up up up up
I slipped, and I got pulled
Pulled up, I tripped, and then you pulled,
You pulled me up
I slipped, and I got pulled,
Pulled up, I slipped, and then you pulled,
You pulled me up pull me up pull me up...
Pulled me up up up up up up up up
I drift away to another land
Sleeping dreaming such a simple thing
I think of things that I might be
I see my name go down in history
I was complaining, I was down in the dumps
I feel so string now cause you pulled me up!
Pull me up up up up up up up up
I slipped, and I got pulled,
Pulled up, I tripped, and then you pulled,
You pulled me up
I tripped, and I got pulled
Pulled up, I slipped, and then you pulled
You pulled me up! pulled me up up, pulled me up...
Pulled me up up up up up up up up
I got up
cause you pulled me up
I stood up
cause you pulled me up
I got up
And that was because you pulled me up
I got up
In a little while you pulled me up
Pull me up up up up, up up up up!
Pull me up up up up up up up up!
I cast a shadow on the living-room wall
Dark and savage with a profile so sharp
Keep that wonderful food on the table
Theres really no hurry Ill eat in a while
I was complaining, I was down in the dumps
I feel so strong now cause you pulled me up!
Pull me up up up up up up up up!
I slipped, and I got pulled
Pulled up, I tripped, and then you pulled,
You pulled me up
I slipped, and I got pulled
Pulled up, I slipped,
And then you pulled, you pulled me up!
Pull me up...pull me up...watch out!
Pull me up up up up up up up up!

I will die without foot prints
Resentment of inmates made me leave home.
Sentiments didn’t dry to suit my age;
Hence I went to streets instead of kin’s home.
I didn’t bring with me any past glory.
The cold of contempt didn’t make me shiver;
The heat of humility didn’t make me seat.
Sans qualm, sans shame, I turned a useless straw,
And without pain, nor strain, I begged for food.
Now and then tears of curses washed my eyes
And stale food thrown in bins roughened my tongue.
Grandchildren were completely forgotten.
All possessions were thrown as ill gotten.
When I will die and who will burry me
Went out of my head, eloping with my
Fear of future, fear of vulture and of gods.
I will die with no wish to leave foot prints.

I Didn't Know
I didn't know,
I didn't know
Well I didn't like cheeseburger alleycats near me
A petrified Phish disease,
I wish somebody'd hear me
I didn't like maple dew, honey melon watercress
I didn't like Phish shoes down by muddy watermelon
I didn't seem to miss you when you kiss'd my honey water
And even showed a picture, showed her down by honey's border
But who laid silver tooth and broke my sunny shoe shine
And all my plastic melodreams are waiting for their new shine
Pardon me, Doug (pardon me, Doug)
Is this a picture of Otis Redding?
Yes! Yes! Taken right before he died
Well you can give me his hide
(well you can give me his hide)
(I didn't know)
I didn't know that I was that far gone (8x)
Well I woulda' liked to seen Bess Truman come see me
and hear all the revolutionaries come free me
'cause if it all ends up running to sneeze me
I'll make it all here, black corners come seize me
and if you boom, back got troubles in your ear
and you can't seem to come back and make it all clear
when eye tails and toe nails and liquid all meet me
when mustard pies and carrot eyes and flounders come greet me
(I didn't know)
I didn't know that I was that far gone (8x)

One God shining in a miillion ways
they say god is one
and he is everywhere
he found him in his kitchen
and calls him his Kitchen God
praying to him night and day
for enough food on his table
some found him in the field
and call him their rice god
praying to him every season
to be blessed with food for the family
some women found him at the door
and call him their door god
praying to him each morning
for safety of the house
some found him in the mountain
and call him the mountain god
praying to him day and night
to bless their ancestors' spirits
they think dwell with Him there
another found him at sea
and call him the sea god
praying to him day and night
so that he could catch enough
of fishes to make his day
each of us looks and finds god
in some ways, calling him
our own god, in our own way
- the god that answers every
earnest call for his blessings
at the door, in the field, at sea
.....everywhere....

Didnt Know
Didn't know what you had
Until you lost it
Didn't know what you own
Until you got it
Didn't know of your sins
Until you fought it.
Didn't know what you needed
Until you sought it.
Didn't know your lies
Until someone spoke them
Didn't know of the truth
Until someone wrote them
Didn't remembered your dreams
Until someone awoke them
Didn't know they died
Until someone chocked them.
Didn't know you had guilt
Until you cried
Didn't know you felt sadness
Until you tried to hide
Didn't know you felt shame
Until you lied
Didn't know you believed in GOD
Until you asked him why.
Didn't know you felt sorrow
Until you shed a tear
Didn't know that you were scared
Until I saw your fear
Didn't know that you hated
Until you were near
Didn't know that you were unhappy
Until you looked in a mirror.
Didn't know who you truly were
Until your ways you sewed
Didn't know that you were evil
Until the truth was showed
Didn't know you did this before
Until I saw all of your woe
Didn't know who you really were
Though I wished then I did know.

An Intruder 5
But I wanted to be sure so I called my next door neighbor-
Not really a friend, but whose advice I entertain from time to time.
'Look, ' she said, 'there are plenty better things to worry about-
Every day more and more, thanks to people's gullibility,
And the disaster mentality created by the press.
(Daphne is fiercely anti-media) Haven't you noticed?
E.G. the same supplements that were said to promote longevity, yesterday
(And which cost an arm and a leg at the health food store, not incidently)
Now will kill you. Take anti-oxidants, for example. Take vitamin E.'
'Take what? ' I asked, not following.
'Surprise! ' People who take vitamin E die sooner. It's been shown.
The whole thing's a scam, cooked up by the pharmaceutical industry, for...'
I didn't know. But it made sense, now she mentioned it.
'You're sure? '
'Sure.'
'But what should I do? '
'Just eat a balanced diet.'
'I mean about the pigeon.'
'Oh, that. Forget it. I'm glad it's not my problem. I detest pigeons.
There's nothing you can do about it, anyway.'
'Maybe I shouldn't fret it.'
'I didn't say THAT. Just choose your obsessions carefully
so as not to waste time.'
That seemed very fair. 'What do you worry about? , I asked,
Like someone who admitted they needed instruction.
'Right now? The Greenland Ice Sheet. It's melting, ya' know.
Look, gotta run.' Click.
That night there was a terrible storm...
