Secrets In My Shoes

I met my lover in London
Thigh deep in sage and scarlet roses
Shaken by the river’s thrush tavern
Twilight in the brushes that combed her hair

The drifting thorns in the blackness, vouching
Adrift in the sake that shifts into the far horizon
The whirlpool of the streams amongst the shadows
Cradled in pleasures beneath the falling stars

Thus London, I figured, was my haven:
Vanishing music, twilight liquor
A stealthy recitation of the present
Poured into the goblets by vestal laughter

The precious songs that our tongues spoke in rivers
To licking the chords that is native to our deep desires
Overflowing in volumes of ecstasy that are borrowed
Throughout flourishing dismissal, spelled out in vowels

I swallow my worth into your enlisting embraces
Nested near the nightly, biblical reasons that we planted
Like breaching ears in the wake of acres in season
Counting the days while each wrath follows me around

London

New York winter
Traffic squeals
The city feels...so old
Late December
Taxi ride
Then run inside
It's cold
Got your letter Monday
I think
Or Tuesday
I lose track
Since then I've been thinking of you
And I've been
Looking back to
London
Can you believe it's
So many years since
London
Hitching a ride and
Carrying knapsacks
London
In the park
By the Thames
Drinking tea
London
Sitting in pubs and
Living in walk-ups
London
Learning the accent
Learnin' to love you
London
We were young
We we sure
We were...free
Was it really ages
Ago
The memories
Never fade
Can you hear Big Ben where
You are
And are you
Glad you stayed in
London
Dodging the rain with
Broken umbrellas
London
Reading the times
On Saturday picnics
London
Counting the stars,
'Till the stars
All were gone
London
So many plans and
Nothing but time in
London
Nothing to fear 'cause
Nothing could last in
London
We grew close
We grew scared
I moved on
Oh London
What were we scared of
Why did I run from
London
Part of me still has
Never come back from
London
Is it fair
That I miss
You so much
Take good care
All my love
Keep in touch
New York winter
Taxi ride
Then run inside
It's cold

London

We came from the far North
summered in Crimea
deserted the armed forces
had to disappear
made it to the free West
on a chartered flight
so we could see what
we trained to fight
We were in London
"Let's do it - let's break the law!"
We were in London
Tell it like it is
We were in London
Tell it like it is
Looking for hard work
or credit card fraud
What do you expect from us?
We come from abroad
to get ourselves a new job
on a building-site
They work you so hard
but we trained to fight
We were in London
"Let's do it - let's break the law!"
We were in London
Tell it like it is
We were in London
"Let's do it - let's break the law!"
We were in London
Tell it like it is
My father fought in Afghanistan
His widow's pension ain't worth a damn
My mother works and goes home to cry
I want to live before I die
We were in London
"Let's do it - let's break the law!"
We were in London
Tell it like it is
We were in London
Tell it like it is

Sylvia

Sylvia is missing -
Dark stars tattooed
Across her face...
Tiny bruises
Black & blue
The dedication on her arm
Reads love & hate
Yea yea
Passing through the underground
Sylvia is coming down
The queen has lost her crown
Today...
She wants to fall
Into a deep deep sleep
So she can forget herself
Run away to london
Lipstick tainted
Powder painted
Perfume in her hair
Run away to london
A thousand cold caresses
Couldnt keep her there
Yea yea
She wants to fall
Into a deep deep sleep
So she can forget herself
The finger prints
Of strangers
On the ugly bedroom floor
Reveal the only traces
Of what sylvia was for

Song-The Final Spark

By Mountain Ash and roses wild
Recalling all we’ve been
Let’s cast our eyes o’er views so wide
And think on what’s unseen

And by the stealthy Luce so dark
Let’s quietly sit and wait
To catch that final flashing spark
As sun and river break

(chorus)
Now take my hand and let us walk
Towards the falling sun
Unveil our hearts and let us talk
Of rapids still to run

And on the sands where rivers meet
Let’s gaze through twilight’s glow
At sea trout surging clear and free
So briefly from the flow

(chorus)
Now take my hand and let us walk
Towards the falling sun
Unveil our hearts and let us talk
Of rapids still to run

And now, by hay just freshly mown,
Beneath the polar star,
Where Saturn hangs above the cove,
Let's kiss once more before we part

London

It was november 4th
I last held your hand
It seemed our time would last forever
You said dont ever leave
I thought youd never go
I wish I could just remember your name...
Youre just a memory now
Like all the ones before
But with your pain Ive had to suffer
Your eyes alight with flame
As the picture burns
I hear the screams from long ago
They cry remember, blood-red streaks on
Velvet throats at night
The streetlights fanned our trail of fame
Through
London london
The memories will never leave me
London london
All I see is you
London london
The cries in the night
Keep bringing me to
London london
Calling out to me
Oh theres some things in life I could never face
The worst is being alone
Sometimes I wish I could have taken your
Place my love
You know I dont want to live forever
Oh let me see you standing in the
Shadows once again
Well walk the streets like long ago in
London london
The fire in your eyes will be bringing me to
London london
All I need is you
The cries in the night keep ringing on in
London london
Calling out to you

London

My visits to London always bring me cheer;
I wish it were possible to bottle the atmosphere.
I would collect together all the sights and sounds,
And surround myself with them, when I’m down.

A trip to London always seems to lift my mood;
By good old London town, I’m easily wooed.
There is always something new and exciting,
Which is why, to me, London seems so inviting.

I may begin a day feeling just a little bit down,
But once in London, a smile replaces my frown.
It’s one of my very favourite places to be;
There’s always so much to do and to see.

I think that London is such an amazing place;
It can suit all your needs, whatever your pace.
In central London, people are always in a rush,
But in the gardens and parks, can be found, hush.

When in London, I always feel on such a high;
My problems, for the day, I can kiss goodbye.
At the end of the day, I don’t want to leave.
The heady mix of aromas, I love to breathe.

I always find it so very hard, to pull myself away,
When, deep in my heart, I desperately want to stay.
Even when, at Waterloo, I’m sat on my train;
In London, a little piece of my heart remains.

Up On Helderberg Hill In A Vast Pine Forest

Up on Helderberg hill in a vast pine forest,
the wind gently rushes through the trees,
the scent of pine is everywhere about me,
while far beneath at the Strand beach

waves are forever braking against the shore,
a far off church bell rings somewhat solitary,
as the twilight falls all over us with silver,
with a magical garment that covers everything

and you look lovely, somewhat like a toy doll
with stars twinkling with twilight in your eyes,
in you my desire flames forever, rivers flow deep
while you send it where and when you will

aim glances, smiles and touching soft lips
while you are drawing all of my arrows,
silences have a own painful meaning
but our embraces, kisses and touch do anchor

in something much darker and deeper
than the coming of this approaching night,
while you kiss me breathless like the wind
that is dying, draw me tenderly in to the grass.

London bride is falling down like me

I am falling down like london bridge.
My life I can not rebuild.
My life was claimed by forces from a far.
By the forces from beyond.

Here I am falling like london bride.
Depession has taken me.
Soon suicide shall be mine.
Im falling falling into death.

London bridege can rebuild.
Me I continue to fall.
I can not be rebuilt.
I am falling down like london bridge.
But I can not get up again

Be Sure To Eat At The Feast

She sat down to feast
at Life's Table
polishing stars
for the summer night;
drinking flower-petal nectar
from hollow vessels
made of moon-beams
and candle light.

She made angel cake
from pixie dust,
angel breath
and laughter steams
warmed in sun-ovens
splayed across the sky
for the Star-Children to eat.

Her main course
was Laughter Pie
served in crystal
goblets
from Jupiter-Sky
and Saturn-Rings.

The whole canape of night-sky
was moved in doors that night
affixing stars
to the draperies
providing soft light.

The planets
dressed themselves up
in purples, blues and greens
a genuflection to the Eternities.

There was orchid wine
rose-bud souffle
Softened Twilight
twinkling, poured and mixed

with warm hearts, heightened spirits
and deep souls that night.

The music of the Heart Song
beat strong;
The message was clear:

Life is beautiful;
enjoy it while
you're here.

There won't be
any
Leftovers
left over.

London

Boganvilia fall into the pool
The hard shelled bugs bite my forearm
My right index fingernail chewed to the quick
My cervix is a long scalene
My sprinklers go off at 6pm each day
And sometimes they spray unsuspecting visitors
My pimples are gooses all over my legs
My brow is furrowed and my vision is blurred
And how I do love london
And how I do love london
The birds make guttural sounds and protect me
My friends come to visit and love me a lot
I dont have the energy to fill this
I am lagged from the jet and the 12 hour flight
And how I do love london
And how I do love london
I am intriguied by the boys with the androdonus songs
Sometimes they rhyme sometimes they rhyme not
The steam will smell of eucalyptus in the shower
The hug will feel forced upon you inconsolable thing
And how I do love london
And how I do love london
Deep breaths will not make my brain stand still
To be loved and swallowed are single and depraved
I love speaking french to the taxi drivers
We slept and were cold on the train out of france
And how I do love london
And how I do love london

Rivers Of Ice

Dont need the money nothing can buy
All that I feel under the skies
Shadows were falling my heart beat inside
We walk through the fields to the rivers of ice
Days turn to colour and darkness to light
She said I want you I need you I want you in my life
Love in the shadows the blood rushed inside
Carry on little saviour to the end of the line
I get high for ever
Till the river runs dry for every
Ooh for ever
Its been so many years now I still cant forget
Love flew like an eagle in gods wilderness
Shadows were falling oh my heart beat inside
We kissed on the bridge above the river of ice
I get high for ever
The river runs dry for ever
I get high for ever
The river runs dry for ever
Ooh she tells me
Ooh she tells me
Tell the end of the line
Shadows were falling
On rivers of ice

Down To London

Stop - whats that sound
Its the death rattle of this rusty old town
Stop - listen again
Its the sound of laughter all along the thames
Hey - whats my line
Do I have to stay here til the end of time
Im - good lookin and bright
I wanna see life after ten at night
So if they ask you where I am
Im in the back of a transit van
In a squat on the earls court road
Gone down to london turning coal into gold
Down to london - down to london
Gone down to london to be the king
Hey - whats your name
The boys back home all seem to look the same
You - should stick with me
And one of us will make it, just you see
Stop - whats that sound
Seems like the sixties are still swingin around
Hey - can you hear me back there
Or is there anybody left to care
So if you ask me where they are
Theyre hanging tough in a soho bar
Playing guitars in the underground
Gone down to london tryin to chase that sound
Down to london - down to london
Gone down to london to be the king
So I ask you should I cry or laugh
Drinking tea in a kings cross caff
A leather jacket against the cold
Gone down to london turning coal into gold
Down to london - down to london
Gone down to london to be the king

Moon Shining Over The London Bridge

The sky is dark now
And the night is here again
But there is a moon shining over the London Bridge right over the sky
And I keep watching that moon while I rest for a while at the Thames River
But I can't take my eyes of the moon that is shining over the London Bridge right over the sky because it is beautiful to see
And at the same time it is getting late now but I don't mind at all because I Rather stay all night at The Thames river watching the moon shining over The London Bridge right over the sky
Yes the Big Ben chined midnight now and London is going to sleep
But I am falling asleep now at The Thames river below the naked three That is there at the Thanes River
Also all the buildings near The Thames river have their lights out
And I am sleeping in totall darkness and at the same time enjoying the Peace and quiet of the Thames river during the night
But near the Thames River is always cold and I don't mind at all Because I am dressed for this kind of weather
But this night at the Thames River I will always remember because it Will be the best sleep I ever had in years

London Seagulls

The pigeons of the Abbey, the pigeons of Saint Paul's,
That woo in windy niches of grey and grimy walls,
The pearl-grey dawns of London, his sky that gleams and glooms,
His stately smoky sunsets are in their changing plumes.

The saucy London sparrows, their Cockney chatter tells
Their parents nested surely in earshot of Bow Bells . . .
But Oh! the London seagulls a-cruising up and down,
They're most like old-time seamen come back to London town.

Old salty swearing seadogs and tarry buccaneers,
With bacca quids and pigtails and ear-rings in their ears,
That spent their money handsome and took their ease ashore
In rowdy Ratcliff aleshops with sand upon the floor . . .

And bawled their old sea-ballads, and told their thumping lies,
In fearsome deep sea lingo to open landsmen's eyes,
And drained their brimming pewters, and spat into the tide,
In old shipboarded taverns by Wapping waterside . . .

And saw there at their moorings the Geordie colliers rock,
The latest pirate dangling at Execution Dock,
The anchored ships unloading their silks and laces fine,
And spices from the Indies, and rum, and Spanish wine . . .

And watched the busy wherries all plying with their fares,
From Globe, Jamaica, Wapping and Cherry Garden Stairs,
And the lighters and the barges a-passing to and fro
As they did on London River two hundred years ago.

London Bridge Song, The

Joni's lighthearted take on "london bridge" was a crowd pleaser in her mid-sixties club show, before she signed her first recording contract. this transcription includes spoken patter
Combined with her music, enchanted audiences back in the early days when joni was playing the smaller, more intimate venues she has always enjoyed most.
(spoken words are in italics)
London bridge is falling down
See the people in my town
They're the ones who bring it down
(it's true they've been for centuries,
Walking by it and saying, you know,
London bridge really is falling down, poor thing,
It just fell down in shame)
My fair lady-o
London bridge is falling up
Save the tea leaves in my cup
Guess the cup is cracking up
My fair lady-o
(i'll have to get a pyrex one)
London bridge is up for sale
Booze heads put my friend in jail
Spent my bridge money on bail
My fair lady-o
(sure would've like to have bought that bridge)
(couldn't let him go to jail)
If the bridge belonged to me
I would serve you tarts and tea
Smiles, that's all the tolls would be
(don't grant you people would be getting across at all)
My fair lady-o
On the bridge there stands a car
Painted with peculiar flowers
It's the beatles' it's not ours
(guess they're looking at the bridge)
(hope they buy it)
My fair lady-o
London bridge is falling down
(something like that)
London bridge is coming down
Coming down on london bridge
Ice cubes melting in my fridge
(they always, do you know those fridges are terrible, they're always melting things and ice cubes are dripping all over the floor)
(and the vegetables are all rotten and your friend turns to you in her very british way and she says: "you know i paid two bob for this. it smells a bit peculiar doesn't it, but don't you t
.. well, we can serve it anyway" and she does)
Coming down on london bridge
Mutton rotting in my fridge
Coming dow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow
Coming-ming-ming-ming-ming-ming
(a little electronic music there for your pleasure)
Coming down on london bridge
My fair lady-o

The Heart Of Grief

YOU will not come again
Along the deep-banked lane
To where the field and fold so long have missed you;
You know no more the way
To where, so many a day
Before the world grew gray,
Your lover kissed you.

The wonders and delights
Of London days and nights
Hold fast a soul not made for pastoral pleasures;
The scent of mignonette
Brings to you no regret,
No withered flowers lie yet
Among your treasures.

And I, who long for you
Sad and glad seasons through,
Find my grief's heart in knowing grief will find you;
Some day you too will sigh,
And lay a dead flower by,
And weep to see joy lie
At last behind you.

What though the flower you hide
With London wire be tied?
What though the heart that broke your heart be rotten?
You too at last must miss
The smile, the word, the kiss,
And know how hard it is
To be forgotten.

Vanishing

If I could recaputre
all of the memories
and bring them to life
surely I would
hear the distant laughter
wasn't it you and me
survivng the night
you're faiding out of my sight
swiftly

you're vanishing
drifting away
your vanishing a-a-a-a-o-oo-o

I was so enraputred
no sensability
to open my eyes
I misunderstood
now you're fading faster
it's suddenly hard to see
you're talking the light
letting the shadows inside
swiftly

your vanishing
drifting awway
you're vanishing a-a-a-a-w-w-a-a-y

reaching out into the distance
searching for spirits of that past
just a trace of your existance to grasp
and if somehow I could recaputre
all of the memories
and bring them to life
lord know I would
but now you're faidng faster
getting so hard to see
you're talking the light
letting the darkness inside
swiftly

you're vanishing
drifting so far away
you're vanishing

Leaving London
the train pushes deep

into the countryside's

a knife
between ribs

quiet as Death
the snow

seeming to grow
trees

simply to support
itself.

Snow & tree creatures
lost now in twilight.

A Sea Burthen

A ship swinging
As the tide swings, up and down,
And men's voices singing, -
East away O! West away!
And a very long way from London Town!

A lantern glowing
And stars looking down,
And the sea smells blowing, -
East away O! West away!
And a very long way from London Town!

Lights in wild weather
From a tavern window old and brown,
And men singing together, -
East away O! West away!
And a very long way from London Town!
