Talking Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues

I saw it advertised one day,
Bear mountain picnic was comin my way.
Come along n take a trip,
Well bring you up there on a ship.
Bring the wife and kids
Bring the whole family.
Yippee!
Well, I run right down n bought a ticket
To this bear mountain picnic.
But little did I realize
I was in for a picnic surprise.
Had nothin to do with mountains.
I didnt even come close to a bear.
Took the wife n kids down to the pier,
Six thousand people there,
Everybody had ticket for the trip.
Oh well. I said, its a pretty big ship.
Besides, anyway, the more the merrier.
Well, we all got on n what dya think,
That big old boat started t sink
More people kept a-pilin on,
That old ship was a-slowly goin down.
Funny way t start a picnic.
Well, I soon lost track of m kids n wife,
So many people there I never saw in m life
That old ship sinkin down in the water,
Six thousand people tryin t kill each other,
Dogs a-barkin, cats a-meowin,
Women screamin, fists a-flyin, babies cryin,
Cops a-comin, me a-runnin.
Maybe we just better call off the picnic.
I got shoved down n pushed around,
All I could hear there was a screamin sound,
Dont remember one thing more,
Just remember walkin up on a little shore,
Head busted, stomach cracked,
Feet splintered, I was bald, naked. . .
Quite lucky to be alive though.
Feelin like I climbed outa m casket,
I grabbed back hold of m picnic basket.
Took the wife n kids n started home,
Wishin Id never got up that morn.
Now, I dont care just what you do,
If you wanta have a picnic, thats up t you.
But dont tell me about it, I dont wanta hear it,
cause, see, I just lost all m picnic spirit.
Stay in m kitchen, have m own picnic. . .
In the bathroom.
Now, it dont seem to me quite so funny
What some people are gonna do fr money.
Theres a bran new gimmick every day
Just t take somebodys money away.
I think we oughta take some o these people
And put em on a boat, send em up to bear mountain . . .
For a picnic.

The Picnic Tree

The picnic tree
abandoned years ago
in a forest
that was once lush
and full of life and love
I sit beneath it
closed eyes
and imagining
my grandparents
newly wed
sitting in the meadow
full of little white flowers,
lush Kentucky blue grass,
and a picnic
all under a tree
I imagine
a grill getting stuck in the tree
only to rust its way to the ground
to be discovered
by younger generations
on four wheelers
the picnic tree
is true history

Why a Picnic, Jane?

But, why a picnic, Jane? We went last year,
And missed the Cup; and you know how you grieved
Because we lost - Oh! yes, you did, my dear.
I had the tip, but I was not believed.
It's just sheer nonsense to deny it all.
And when he won, you said, if you recall,
You'd never miss a chance like that again.
Well, cut the Cup. But why a picnic, Jane?

You know how I hate picnics - sticky things
The grizzling children and the dusty road,
The flies and all those crawlywigs with stings
My dear, I'm not selfish! But that load
Of baskets - Eh? Back him at starting price?
That's an idea. And then I could remain
To take you and the children? - M'yes. Quite nice.
Jolly, of course. But, why a picnic, Jane?

Wait! Have you thought of burglars? There you are!
The empty house. Remember that last case
Near here? ... Bright thought, my dear! You take the car.
You've solved it. I'll stay at home and mind the place.
Lonely? Not I. You take the car, of course.
I've a good book; I'll be all right alone.
That's settled then ... And now, about the horse.
Wait here, and while I think of it, I'll phone.

'Lo! That you, Sam? All set! I can't talk loud.
'Lo! can you hear me? Listen, lad. It's on.
Tomorrow, yes. Count me in the crowd.
Your car - about eleven. They'll be gone.
Great stunt, that picnic! If we make the pace
We ought to get there for the second race.
Well, Jane, that's all fixed up. I've backed our horse.
Eh? Help cut sandwiches? Why, dear, of course.

Going Out For A Picnic

Going out for a picnic,
Nothing to worry and panic,
When the adult children accompanied,
What is there to be distressed?

Mummy prepares the food,
Daddy buys the snacks with good mood,
The children take their net books, I phones, PDAs,
All go for a picnic in Putra Jaya.

When daddy switches on the radio,
The children close their ears,
One with the hands and the rest with ear plugs,
Mummy watches the brood without any clue.

The angry daddy looks at them,
Expects them to speak what he wants to listen,
The son talks to his girlfriend through sms,
The daughter plays the CG online.

None look out as they used to do,
The parents of unpredictable adults are confused.
Another son watches the movie in the net book,
The happy family is on the way for a picnic.

Fourth

expectation's hope rising, pulsing
as you bring the warmth and joy
that only a bright summer day
presents on a picnic blanket spread
filled with goodies and laughter
neatly packed away in a picnic basket

expectation's hope realising
as you take my hand in yours
thru the threshold of our home
prancing into the breeze and light
filled with memories and plans
lovingly packed for a rainy morn

expectation's hope resucitating
as your soothing breath caresses
taking my longings into belonging
perfecting inner transformation
filled with songs and dreams
movements in blissful harmony

Picnic-time

It's June ag'in, an' in my soul I feel the fillin' joy
That's sure to come this time o' year to every little boy;
For, every June, the Sunday-schools at picnics may be seen,
Where "fields beyont the swellin' floods stand dressed in livin' green";
Where little girls are skeered to death with spiders, bugs, and ants,
An' little boys get grass-stains on their go-to meetin' pants.
It's June ag'in, an' with it all what happiness is mine -
There's goin' to be a picnic, an' I'm goin' to jine!

One year I jined the Baptists, an' goodness! how it rained!
(But grampa says that that's the way "baptizo" is explained.)
And once I jined the 'Piscopils an' had a heap o' fun -
But the boss of all the picnics was the Presbyteriun!
They had so many puddin's, sallids, sandwidges, an' pies,
That a feller wisht his stummick was as hungry as his eyes!
Oh, yes, the eatin' Presbyteriuns give yer is so fine
That when they have a picnic, you bet I'm goin' to jine!

But at this time the Methodists have special claims on me,
For they're goin' to give a picnic on the 21st, D. V.;
Why should a liberal universalist like me object
To share the joys of fellowship with every friendly sect?
However het'rodox their articles of faith elsewise may be,
Their doctrine of fried chick'n is a savin' grace to me!
So on the 21st of June, the weather bein' fine,
They're goin' to give a picnic, and I'm goin' to jine!

Heard Somebody Cry

(I thought I heard somebody cry--
I though I heard somebody cry)
I went to see what I could find
Like flowers in the dead of night
Like shadows in the moonlight--
I though I heard somebody cry
A choir with a single voice--a picnic on a cliff
Antenna like an insect--to pick up all your thoughts
Chorus
It isnt true
I am not the ghost
Without a soul . . . come
Listen to my heart
You feel the beat . . . stop
Listen to the sound
Of moving feet . . . walk
Through the halls at night
When Im asleep
I dont believe . . .i dont believe
The shoe is on the other foot--the glove is on the fist
The first is like a cannonball--but it feels like a kiss
I got a bed thats real soft--in a room thats always sad
I thought I heard a window sigh--
I though I heard somebody cry
Chorus
A choir with a single voice--a picnic on a cliff
Antenna like an insect--to pick up all your thoughts
I sip the running water--like rivers from your eyes
I thought I heard somebody cry--somebody might be lost
I thought I heard somebody cry--somebody might be lost
I thought I heard somebody cry--i thought Id go and see
I thought I heard somebody cry--somebody might be me

Picnic in the rain

The rain was pouring down,
we set out for the park,
children in the back seat,
mothers in the front.

Picnic baskets packed,
tasty treats for all
we took a big umbrella
we'd need before nightfall.

A bottle of red for Al',
a can of beer for Jan
some Pepsi for young Josie
and a flask of tea for Anne.

Our French students came with us
spitting out French words,
oh la la and non, non, non
was plainly what we heard.

Zees mad English people
z'ey go out in zee rain,
we don't understand them
what zat they zey say again?

A streaker ran right by us,
I saw his ample cheeks,
well what else would I see
that might well rhyme with streak?

I tried to shade the children's eyes
but they were having none,
ooh la la, he's naked
look at his red bum!

We had a grand ol' afternoon
and then the sun came out.
Puddles dried up rapidly
and sun cream up did sprout.

So next time when it's pouring
we'll do it all again!
We're English, mad as hatters
and we picnic in the rain.

A Summer Picnic

an early summer's day
we drove along on a gravel road
far back into the country
to enjoy a picnic
while snapping a few pictures
wildflowers, buttercups and dandelions
then a lone horse by a fence
farther on a field of jersey cows
by a red barn, with an amazing blue sky
then we arrive at our favourite spot
we stop by the old pond
to enjoy our picnic with a show
so enchanting the peacocks dance
for the white queen with blue eyes

A Visit TO A Seal Colony(Villanelle)

The Villanelle is:
1.metered, primarily iambic pentameter.
2.written in a total of 19 lines, made up of 5 tercets and ending with a quatrain.
3.L1 and L3 of the first stanza, alternate as the refrain in the following tercets.

It was indeed a grand picnic event
Tho' hard by wheels in rains on long rough road
Seaward to see the seals our long intent

Up blocked cut crossed in flown spillways paths wet
Did not get back but all enjoyed pursued
It was indeed a grand picnic event

Sun light sinking so rushed and reached our spot
Oh God! we saw nature's settings-fulfilled
Seaward to see the seals our long intent

Ah, pups and moms and dads so brown so great
And seals clumping snoozing along accrued
It was indeed a grand picnic event

Furry some rocked risky some raged stepped out
When saw a seal in haste closer-fulfilled
Seaward to see the seals our long intent

Pictures, photos bagful no need to get
For those scenic great seals our hearts well stored
It was indeed a grand picnic event
Seaward to see the seals our long intent

Merwin

there is no oxygen in the university
like there is in the house
beside a hill
where the river flows
and some birds sing

yet you too miss the city
and you go back there
and live a life
of both
city and rural
like a pendulum
to and fro

all because poetry
tells you to do so

flowers and poles and clouds and skyscrapers
and waterfalls and
citystreets and cafes by the side
and then back to
a picnic with wife and kids
on the grass and plains

Just A Little Time

with you
give affection a
chance
we share
our loneliness
together
making us feel
that in
melancholy
two people can
never be lonely

feel that we are
in a picnic in the

no ants on the

no symptoms of
any rain
nothing dull

Not Enough Love In The World

Sometimes I wonder where it is loves goes
I dont know if even heaven knows
But I know we had dreams
That didnt quite come true
And now Im not the one,
Little boy, whos keeping you
Chorus:
I was either standing in your shadow
Or blocking your light
Though I kept on trying
I could not make it right
For this girl
Theres not enough love in the world
I know people hurt you so bad
They dont know the damage
They can do, and it makes me so sad
How we knock each other down
Just like children on a playground
Even after that o sun went down
Chorus
Oh darling this is still a shady little town
And sometimes its so hard to smile
For the world, for the camera
And still you have something left
You dont have to prove nothing to nobody
Just take good care of yourself
Im not easy to live with
I know that its true
Youre no picnic either, baby
And thats one of the things
I loved about you
But a time will come around
When we need to settle down
Got to get off this merry-go-round
Chorus

(It Was) A Very Good Year.

My minds image of my Ellen
Is like a rose preserved from time.
Or like a treasured bottle
from a vintage year for wine.

I am haunted by her memory-
How our fingers intertwined.
The fragrance of her body
as I held it close to mine.

I was Mars and you were Venus
your head rested on my chest.
A summer rain began to fall
persuading us to dress.

Now just the shadow of your smile
Brings tears to a dry place.
Funny how my heart can race
Within the ghost of your embrace.
.

You are unchanging, therefore perfect
Your aspect is divine.
I believe our year was vintage-
for love, if not for wine.

(Fifth poem in the Ellen cycle, A summer picnic at Planting Fields, Arboretum in 1979. It was a picnic, marked by a brief rain, where we shared a bottle of Mouton Rothschild)

Leaving You to Sit and Wait

IF they can ruin themselves
And their own fellowmen.
Destroy families and friends
For a dollar bill whose value
Nears an end...
Do you believe their priorities,
Anguish over what to bring to a picnic?
Leaving you to sit and wait for a response?
The premise of it is sick.
Like an attack on innocent people is launched!
And the excuses for it are accepted.

Why, oh Why

Why are there no ants around,
until you want to have a picnic?
Why does it rain, everytime
you wash the car?
Why do people find money on,
the other side of the street,
from you?
Why does the phone ring,
everytime your in the bath tub?
Why does the weather turn,
bad, when the home baseball,
team return home?
Why does the traffic light,
continue to stay green,
when you want to stop the car,
to look for something?
Why, oh, why we ask?
