My youngest son asked me this as we were
laying around arguing whether I was going to read more than one book or not…
will grandma Mickey’s hair still be white, when we are in heaven?
why do six year olds think about life and death?
why do they not seem afraid
and see it as a natural part of living life
we fear death,
we avoid hospitals, when friends are ill
and when we do go there it is quick to help speed the recovery
of the ill and get out as quick as you can
when people are ill we don’t see them as much,
they understand no one wants to be around seriously ill people
and don’t invite themselves to events they know
will cause others grief
will grandma Mickey’s hair still be white, when we are in heaven?
shows an understanding that she will be in a form that we will recognize
and still be our grandmother
and white signifies pureness, in every circumstance
except as related to hair

Old Number Seven
A doubleheader in the Bronx.
Bright sunshine floods the end of May,
Old number Seven at the plate,
Mantle on his last good day.
A pair of homers, five for five.
The legs are wrapped, he strides with pain
Mickey takes the bases slow
He has to sit the second game.
It would have been a fitting end
to wave his cap and walk away.
To end like Ruth and Williams did
and homer on his final day.
But Jimmy Foxx is still in reach
so Mickey drags himself to play.
The Cathedral in the Bronx half empty
Few come to watch him fade away.
Mclain and Lonberg are ahead
Five Thirty Six and Mick is done
Long shadows stalk the center field
that he patrolled when he was young.

Special offers at my superstore
Get bigger every day
With savings on their bulk buys
Reducing what we pay
I bought a pack of toilet rolls
Fifteen’s but paid for twelve’s
It seemed a super bargain
Taking three more from the shelves
Lots of chocolate biscuits
If you buy one get one free
This also seemed a super deal
So I bought another three
If you bought a jar of coffee
With extra you got bigger
Two of those instead of one
Would change our shopping figure
I bought some bread and butter
With a great big leg of lamb
Fifty mini picnic pies
Plus slices of cooked ham
Lots of things I didn’t need
Filled high my shopping barrow
I’d only gone to buy some milk
