Friday Night
I once dated an overweight girl.
She was cute and her first name was Shirl.
When we tried to make love
after push and much shove
she kept saying let's give it a whirl.
But the distance from me to her core
was extensive, and things did get sore.
So we had to abort
'cause he WAS way too short
yet she asked me try a bit more.
So I went out with someone so skinny
who was braless and only wore mini.
When we started our battle
there was pubic bone rattle
and her navel was truly an innie.
Well I went back to Shirl in a flash.
And discovered that Shirl had a rash.
So she went to the quack
and she never came back.
Monday morning she'd turned into ash.
So I told myself now to abstain.
From all sexual 'ta-ta' I'd refrain.
I'd ignore all new co-ed's
and join some good poets
and would hide my best friend in my brain.

Depression
sitting at home in deep thought
medical help i had sought.
a case of depression is what they said
so i went home and went to bed.
i refused to believe that's what it could be
but denial is always first, as was told to me.
how is that possible? how can it be?
i've always been happy and carefree.
he had said:
i keep my anger bottled up inside
it is something which i learned to hide.
no two cases are ever the same
and there's no reason to feel ashamed.
depression is a state of mind
which affects your body all the time.
it will make me sluggish and tired
and wanting to hide.
i won't want to talk to anyone.
that is when depression has begun.
i may sit in a corner all by myself
wondering if i'm living in hell.
i feel as if life has turned its back on me.
but in my heart thats not what i see.
i start to ignore the way i look
and the toll that its took.
then i take a good look in the mirror
'and what do i see'
everything that was told to me.
i see my face completly withdrawn
and the appearance that i formed.
i see all my loved ones that i've hurt
including the wife that's giving birth.
i realize then that i can not do it alone.
that i must seek the help that i need
to stop this inner bleed.
i fell down to my knees
and asked the LORD to hear my pleas
to give me the strength to do my best
and for him to do the rest.
as i got up from my short prayer
i heard a voice say in my ear.
'help yourself and i will help you'

Who You Calling Shorty
I am the short girl who
is always at the end of the line
looking up at the shoulders of others
and I don't' like that.
All the models are tall and have long legs
me, I'm short and made to feel like a child
especially when standing in line staring at backs.
I am the short girl.
So I stand back when tall people approach
so as to not have to crane my neck looking up
I like shorter men most times for the same reasons and more
I have learned to resent the tall shelves built into my kitchen
and subway straps which stop too short
for me to reach.
Overly tall heels make me look like a stork walking
and hurt my feet;
I am the short girl
and I see guys
looking over my head
at other girls
when we talk.
So I make up for it by being smart
and putting cushions on my chair
by being a good dancer on the dance floor
although they told me I didn't have 'good lines'
in my ballerina class.
I am the short girl
and don't know what to do.
What would you do
if you were me?
I guess I could stop complaining
and grow up
but only if I could;
see what I mean?
Short people are the unseen minority
and please tell the rap people
to stop calling me shortie;
that is rubbing it in.
Some of us have bone implants
put into our shins
to gain an inch
but that is not me
that seems drastic and risky.
So I will relax into my navel landscape
and looking up at chins;
I suppose life could be worse
than merely being always called shortie.
But folks keep in mind
true though that might be
us short people
don't like that only our height is being seen
as the most important thing
people see.
So all you storks
gangly and tottering
know by aged 60
you will all lose height
and you tall folks
will sink right down
to the same height
as the rest of us.
Then you and I will
come to see eye to eye.
Until then
