Playin In The Band

Some folks trust to reason others trust to might,
I dont trust to nothin, but I know it comes out right.
Say it once again now, whoa, I hope youll understand
When its done and over, lord, a man is just a man.
Playin, playin in the band. daybreak, daybreak on the land.
Some folks look for answers others look for fights,
Some folks up in treetops just a looking for their kites.
Whoa, I can tell your future just look whats in your hand,
But I cant stop for nothin Im just playing in the band.
Playin, playin in the band. daybreak, daybreak on the land.
Standin on a tower world at my command
You just keep a turnin while Im playing in the band.
And if a man among you got no sin upon his hand
Let him cast a stone at me for playing in the band.
Playin, playin in the band. daybreak, daybreak on the land.

Daybreak

Im singin to the world
Its time we let the spirit come in
Let it come on in
Im singin to the world
Everybodys caught in the spin
Look at where weve been
Weve been runnin around
Year after year blinded with pride
Blinded with fear
But its daybreak if you wanna believe
It can be daybreak aint no time to grieve
Said its daybreak if youll only believe
And let it shine, shine, shine
All around the world
Singin to the world
Whats the point in puttin it down?
Theres so much love to share
Im singin to the world
Dont you see it all comes around
The feelings everywhere
Weve been closin our eyes
Day after day covered in clouds
Losin our way
Hey, but its daybreak if you wanna believe
It can be daybreak aint no time to grieve
Said its daybreak if youll only believe
And let it shine, shine, shine
All around the world

The Skyline Man

I saw today
For the first time
The skyline man
Flying his airplane
30,0000 feet in the sky
And it was amazing
Because at the same time the birds were flying in the sky
How could I forget that birds and airplane share the sky with each Other?
The birds own the sky but the skyline man doesn't own the sky
So who owns the sky?
I am afraid that God owns the sky
And God gave the perfect name to it
He named it sky
He also created the skiline man
So he could fly his airplane into the sky
The skyline man
Is the lucky one because he can fly all over the world
In his airplane
Also I believe that the weather plays a role in his life
While he is flying

Daybreak

daybreak, still limbs lace
to gray sky, wait for the next
storm to shake open

morning, still sleeping
shuttered windows conceal the
cold face of daybreak.

Chosen

The lot of love is chosen. I learnt that much
Struggling for an image on the track
Of the whirling Zodiac.
Scarce did he my body touch,
Scarce sank he from the west
Or found a subtetranean rest
On the maternal midnight of my breast
Before I had marked him on his northern way,
And seemed to stand although in bed I lay.
I struggled with the horror of daybreak,
I chose it for my lot! If questioned on
My utmost pleasure with a man
By some new-married bride, I take
That stillness for a theme
Where his heart my heart did seem
And both adrift on the miraculous stream
Where -- wrote a learned astrologer --
The Zodiac is changed into a sphere.

Cast Adrift

Within the heartfelt sadness,
my ship sails across a barren sea
towards no island of love for me.
Cast adrift to an empty place
where the broken-hearted go
on a sea made of tears
where no one wants to go.

My days are spent in remorse
for things said and done.
Thinking back I realise
I should have done something
before the worst begun.
Now I am cast adrift to an empty place
where the broken-hearted go.

Once I sailed among the stars
on loves golden wings,
felt the sun smile on my face,
touching heaven with my fingertips
before my world caved in.
You left me for another
and cast me adrift to an empty place
where the broken-hearted go.

The Blue Nowhere

Afloat and adrift
In the “blue nowhere”
Amongst nebulous nothingness
Yet anxious to share

To dwell in anonymity
Yet not in close proximity
Giving unusual free rein
To things usually unshared

Words put in prose
sent into the blue
In poems that are proposed
To be read by you

Anonymity is blindness
Nonconformity a kindness
So we cast our emotions
On ethereal oceans

Set afloat and adrift
In the “blue nowhere'

The Wild Old Wicked Man

BECAUSE I am mad about women
I am mad about the hills,'
Said that wild old wicked man
Who travels where God wills.
'Not to die on the straw at home.
Those hands to close these eyes,
That is all I ask, my dear,
From the old man in the skies.
Daybreak and a candle-end.

'Kind are all your words, my dear,
Do not the rest withhold.
Who can know the year, my dear,
when an old man's blood grows cold? '
I have what no young man can have
Because he loves too much.
Words I have that can pierce the heart,
But what can he do but touch?'
Daybreak and a candle-end.

Then Said she to that wild old man,
His stout stick under his hand,
'Love to give or to withhold
Is not at my command.
I gave it all to an older man:
That old man in the skies.
Hands that are busy with His beads
Can never close those eyes.'
Daybreak and a candle-end.

'Go your ways, O go your ways,
I choose another mark,
Girls down on the seashore
Who understand the dark;
Bawdy talk for the fishermen;
A dance for the fisher-lads;
When dark hangs upon the water
They turn down their beds.
Daybreak and a candle-end.

'A young man in the dark am I,
But a wild old man in the light,
That can make a cat laugh, or
Can touch by mother wit
Things hid in their marrow-bones
From time long passed away,
Hid from all those warty lads
That by their bodies lay.
Dayhreak and a candle-end.

'All men live in suffering,
I know as few can know,
Whether they take the upper road
Or stay content on the low,
Rower bent in his row-boat
Or weaver bent at his loom,
Horseman erect upon horseback
Or child hid in the womb.
Daybreak and a candlc-cnd.

'That some stream of lightning
From the old man in the skies
Can burn out that suffering
No right-taught man denies.
But a coarse old man am I,
I choose the second-best,
I forget it all awhile
Upon a woman's breast.'
Daybreak and a candlc-end.

Adrift! A little boat adrift!

30

Adrift! A little boat adrift!
And night is coming down!
Will no one guide a little boat
Unto the nearest town?

So Sailors say—on yesterday—
Just as the dusk was brown
One little boat gave up its strife
And gurgled down and down.

So angels say—on yesterday—
Just as the dawn was red
One little boat—o'erspent with gales—
Retrimmed its masts—redecked its sails—
And shot—exultant on!

Skyline Tommy

He loves all games that good men play-
And plays them clean and straight-
But most the chase of foxes
With all its turns of fate.
When far behind him in the vale
Strings out our beaten hunt
With easy grace he keeps his place,
His rightful place, in front.
He always seems to lead us
Whate'er the pace may be-
‘ He's always on the skyline! '
As some one said to me.
‘Tis true his horses are the best,
‘Tis true he steals his start,
But none could hold a line so bold
Without a gallant heart.
So here's to Skyline Tommy,
The bravest of our guides!
In all the scattered counties
No finer horseman rides;
Not soon shall we, the laggards,
The cheering sight forget
Of Tommy high against the sky
In splendid silhouette!

Brighten Your Night With My Day

Daybreak finds you up and alive
Just as though you could touch a star
But sunset seems to leave you weary alone
And wondering who you are
Dont deny that lonely feeling
That keeps stealing on you from deep down inside
Hey, cant you see that its no good concealing
A feeling it hurts you to hide
When you can come home to me
Yes, Im happy to hear what youve got
To say to me, baby, all the way
Girl, you can count on me
Watch those shadows fade away
And brighten your night with my day
Daybreak, sunset hot and cold
Running smiles and tears
A bright outside to match your foolish pride
But not a word for the lonely years
Please come back to me
Now you wont have to say
That youll stay with me, baby, no, its not that way
Just come back home to me
Watch those shadows fade away
And brighten your night with my...
Daybreak, sunset
You dont have to cry no more
Now, everythings gonna be just fine
Watch out, baby, here it comes
Right around the corner
Here it comes
Just brighten your night with my day

Phenomenon

How dark the night has become
that even the Southern Cross fades away
for hours before daybreak

and with it all the other stars are gone
as if this darkness swallows everything
and even the moon is under siege

and stargazers wonder what awaits humanity
while the darkness challenges their science and equipment
and how dark night has become.

No science can explain it and there is something unreal
from which this darkness comes that even conceals the sun
as if this darkness swallows everything

and this phenomenon draws the attention of the whole of humanity
and there are politicians making wild theories
for hours before daybreak

and religious leaders get upset
since the secular world does not comprehend the impact
from which this darkness comes that even conceals the sun

and they lay charge after charge
and there are deliberated with the key question:
how dark the night has become?

Preachers rise and are convinced that man does not serve God right
and that judgement is at hand
since the secular world does not comprehend the impact

and that something is going to hit earth with a bang
and the destiny of man is loudly lamented
for hours before daybreak

as if God is deciding the lot of man,
as if the universe has come to a standstill
and the judgement is at hand

and people even think of an outer space invasion
and alarmed they drive up and down.
How dark the night has become
for hours before daybreak

and the darkness just keeps on and on
and with it all the other stars are gone
as if the universe has come to a standstill
and even the moon is under siege.

Summer's Rain

Another child bathed in summer's rain
Another cloud rised in horizon's plain
Another piece broke from your crystal heart
Another piece broke your consiousness apart

Chasing after the brightest eyes
Where have you been all my life?
Perhaps you've been a thorn in my side
Perhaps you've been a flower to revive

And here we are, adrift upon summer's sky
And here we are, adrift upon our bitter lives

Though drowning in summer's rain
No longer, no longer, no longer
Now that we've found the urge
For memory to remember

And forgetfulness to forget
For all our times to spend
Dreaming about summer
And summer's end....

Cypher Seven [07]

The nearer camp fires lighted,
The distant beacons bright—
The horsemen on the skyline
Are closing in to-night!
My brothers, Oh my brothers!
Lie down and rest at last—
The Years of Reparation
Have rushed upon us fast.

Oh, ride and ride, you riders,
Who rode ere I was born,
While blink-and-blink the star-dust
That blinks before the morn.
And glow and glow you camp fires,
And flash, you beacons bright!
They’re riding round the wronged ones
And riding round the right!

My brothers, Oh my brothers!
With dried and haggard eyes,
In gaol for just blows stricken—
In gaol for women’s lies!
Lie down and pace no longer
But bathe your eyes in tears
For Years of Retribution
That shall be seven years!

Their lovers and believers!
Their sweethearts, sisters, wives,
Their daughters, sons and mothers,
The true friends of their lives!
Hold up your heads and firmly
Look down the Crooked Seers
For Years of Justifying
That shall be seven years.

Inventors, artists, poets—
Exiled or driven mad,
Sweated, sneered at, slandered,
And driven to the bad—
Take up the tools of genius,
Freed from all paltry fears,
For Seasons of Repayment
That shall be seven years.

Oh, ride and ride, you riders,
That rode when I was born
Against a ghastly skyline
Beneath a storm-cloud torn!
I watched you through my childhood,
I saw the whip and spur,
No spy’s glass could detect you
But I knew what you were!

Oh, ride and ride, my riders,
And flash my birth star bright!
The youth I never dreamed of
Is with me here to-night!
The hearing, strength and vision,
The will to do and dare,
The love I ever longed for
Is round me everywhere.

Dead Friendship—ah! Dead Friendship,
Rise up and breathe again—
I ride my rounds re-honoured
Along the ranks of men.
My old mates, Oh! my old mates,
Who fought the cur and brute—
My horsemen from the skyline
Are drawn up to salute!

My Dead Love, Oh! my Dead Love,
Who died for love of me—
Who sleeps amongst the poets
Since five years sobbed the sea.
Since five years blackened honour
And cramped and warped the pen—
There’s glory to your spirit
The laurel leafs again.

My enemies, the causeless
Of vicious mysteries,
Or mad with jealous madness—
Or for the crawler’s fees—
Fear ye my Cypher Seven!
For seven years to run—
The number set by Heaven
When Heaven’s will is done.

So ride and ride, my riders,
And ride for men and me,
Ride close round madness yonder
And blackest treachery!
Oh! ride round little children
That sleep through all and smile!—
At daybreak I will lead you—
Now I must rest awhile.

Fallen Angel

Tears of joy at the birth of a brother
Never alone from that time
Sixteen years through knife fights and danger
Strangely why his life not mine
West side skyline crying
Fallen angel dying
Risk a life to make a dime
Lifetimes spent on the streets of a city
Make us the people we are
Switchblade stings in one tenth of a moment
Better get back to the car
Snow white side streets of cold new york city
Stained with his blood it all went wrong
Sick and tired blue wicked and wild
God only knows for how long
Fallen angel
Fallen angel
West side skyline
Crying for an angel dying
Life expiring in the city
Fallen angel...
