Go Ahead, Call Me A Pig, I’ve Heard Worse
(A narrative)
Met her at the seminar and asked her over for an
early dinner. I assured her my aim was not to get
into her pants. I said, “It would be too soon for
me.” I use that line all the time and they usually
buy it.
Showed her some poetry books, asked about her
childhood and her family. I don’t even remember
her answers. She showed me some pictures from
her wallet – her cousin or a friend or something,
I don’t remember.
I displayed confidence in the kitchen but not too
much, more like a world-weary confidence, as if
I’d been doing this chef thing for years, adding
pinches of things with an understated flourish,
displaying the requisite false modesty after I fed
her a sip of the sauce with the wooden spoon, with
my other hand palm-up underneath her chin - I
always like that nurturing, semi-intimate gesture -
and she swooned at the taste and hopefully at the
thought of a man who (supposedly) loved to cook.
I tried to agree with most of the things she said
over dinner, furrowing my brow and pursing my
lips when I wanted her to think she had made a
point worth pondering. I intentionally forgot to
light the candles so that she could do it as a small
act of taking care of me. I made sure to tell her
about some of my embarrassing moments that
never happened.
We went for a stroll in the park after dinner. I
wanted her to think I loved children. I pointed at
one and said, “Look at that cute kid.” Almost any
kid would have sufficed. The one I picked was
playing with a ball or a stick or something.
I sensed things were going well so it was time to
bring up my old girlfriend so that we could talk
about relationships. I looked for an opportunity.
When she said she liked country music, I lied that
my old girlfriend was a big country music fan.
She took the bait and asked what happened
between my old girlfriend and me. I didn’t say
anything for a few seconds so that she would
think I was getting deep and that I was going to be
straight with her. Then I acted winsome and
reflective. I said my old girlfriend had left me (which
wasn’t true) , and get this: I said I thought my old
girlfriend was afraid of intimacy, and that, yes, I
know that’s a role reversal, but that that’s what I
had wanted – someone to be close to, someone to
share my feelings with.
Okay, okay, this is getting long, and I’m almost
ready to vomit myself, so I’ll cut to the chase.
Did we wind up in bed? You bet. Not that night,
but a few days later. Now, you can go ahead and
call me a pig. I’ve heard worse. But just
understand one thing. I was only trying to satisfy
a biological urge. I didn’t ask to be wired this
way. It’s the way God made me: horny as all get
up. But see, I can’t be honest with women about
that because overtly sex-charged guys turn them
off big time (well, usually) , so I’m forced to use
deceit. I don’t mean to hurt anyone. I wish I
didn’t have to go through such a rigmarole to get
laid, but there’s no other way.
If it gives you any solace, I ended up marrying
her. Yeah, after all that, I actually liked her. I
guess I love her too, whatever that means. Turns
out she likes sex even more than me, who knew?
One day, I confessed to her about all those
manipulative ruses I had used to get her in the
sack. She wasn’t even mad. She just formed her
face into a little pout, gave me a playful slap, and
said, “I hope we have daughters. Then you’ll get your
comeuppance.” She got her wish.

I Will Come Back For You
I'm sure I recognised her face
and I felt as if she knew mine too
I wanted to ask her where we'd met
but it didn't seem the right thing to do.
She then asked me how have I been?
as it had been such a very long while
now for some reason that made me feel uneasy
so I coughed nervously and tried to smile.
She went on to tell me so many things
that nearly knocked me off my feet
she even knew where I was living
and told me the name of the street.
She continued to talk all about my life
but I still never asked her how or why
and when I asked her where she had come from?
she smiled gently and pointed up to the sky.
'Are you my Guardian Angel then,
come down here to take me away
you seem to know all about me
even when I was a little boy at play? '
She never answered to this question
but before she left she kissed me on my head
then she just floated away from my view
the next thing I knew I awoke in my bed.
But I know that I wasn't just dreaming
as it felt so real and alive and true
and I know that she'll return again one day
because she whispered I'll come back for you.

The Cat and the Rat
The pudgy, playful cat said to the rather weary rat,
“I have to keep chasing you so that I don’t get too fat.”
The rather weary rat said he didn’t understand.
“Don’t you chase me for the next meal you’ve planned? ”
The cat laughed and asked, “Why would I want that?
Without you, who would I chase, you silly, weary rat? ”
“I’m tired and sure don’t care if you do get fat.”
Said the more than rather angry weary rat.
At that the rather weary rat decided to ask,
“Can we be friends or is that too tough a task? ”
The pudgy, playful cat frowned and wanted to know,
“Weary rat, just how fat do you want me to grow?
If I stop chasing you, that won’t be too wise,
Since you’re the only way that I can exercise.”
The rather weary rat started to sob and wail.
All this running had made him quite weak and frail.
Then he had an idea that might stop the cat from getting fat.
So he simply asked the pudgy, “Why don't you chase you

The pudgy, playful cat had never, ever thought of that.
Now for sure he knew he would never become fat.

I heard her footsteps on the driveway
whilst I was lying in our bed,
she’s been out all night again,
sleeping elsewhere instead.
I asked her why she does this.
but she turned and looked away,
she then said she wants a good time
and isn’t ready to live life my way.
She was too young when she married
and babies came along too soon,
but now they’re more independent,
her feet itch when she sees the moon.
I asked where our marriage was going
and she said that she just didn’t care.
All she wanted to do was live her life
in someplace where I wasn’t there.
So I asked her if she still loved me
and she said she never really did,
and the only reason she married
was because she was having my kid.
With tears I told her that I loved her
and there was no one else for me.
She shrugged and said that’s tough,
but she wanted to be set free.
So our marriage is now over
and the children live with me.
Their mother has gone forever
and that’s the way it has to be.

My Best Friend Danny
I met him in nineteen fifty-six
he was my best friend
him and I, was always in a fix
of our fights, we always did mend.
There was the time
we painted the fence
wanted to do the job, real fine
used a whole gallon of paint
it didn't make sense
my brother dave asked,
'What happened to all the paint'?
when we told him, 'We used it all, '
he laughed, I thought, he was going to faint,
thru the years, with that story,
we have really had a ball
Then there was the time
we tried to chop down the tree
my brother got mad, but the three was mine
oh, we were so care-free
I never forget the racoon,
that followed us home,
he seemed to like our radio
that was playing a tune
the racoon, seemed so a lone
I never forgot the indian head
pennies, he sold me,
he stole them, of crime he led,
he had taken them from his dad
I should have known, he sold them so cheap
to get them back, his father was glad
He always did something
to me that was real mean
to make up, a present he would bring
of our friendship, he would lean
He taught me how to smoke
this you say, you call a friend.
when I could have had a stroke,
but he always had money to lend
When I didn't have any friends at all,
Danny was always, by my side
and it sure made me feel tall
if any one picked on me, he would
beat their hide
Every one called him and I a clown,
each one laughed so hard
that it, really brought them down,
at poker, he could really hide a card
Every morning before school
we played poker, he cheated a lot
and with him, I wanted to fight a duel
but he told me 'I cheat not.'
Of the down town loop, we did ride
in nine-teen fifty-nine
our car through the streets, would glide
trying to find girls
that would be his or mine
In nine-teen sixty, my dog shep died,
it was very depressing and sad
him and I, all day we cried
it made me unhappy and a little mad
In nine-teen sixty-two
he joined the army
I tried to join, but didn't make it
those days were very stormy
after what he went through,
I didn't mind a bit
In nine-teen sixty-seven
the army let him go,
at home at last, I thought I was
in heaven
but I soon found out, it wasn't so
The army had changed him, in many ways
Danny was not the same anymore
as I looked back, at those good old days
when I always heard him, knock on the door
All he wanted to do now, is go drink
he could'nt sit still very long
and he was really starting to sink
he had seen action, against the Viet Cong
Next to him one night
a man's throat was slashed, a man who was kind
it wasn't good, or right
and what it must have done, to Danny's mind
Over the years, I saw him, until eighty-one
hav'nt seen him since
remember well, good times and all the fun
Danny where ever you are,
you are still my best friend
does that make sense.
The prisoner of his conscience (Story Poem)
He was very poor and he married a rich woman
So he got money but he became a very sad man
She couldn't have children, even it wasn't his game plan
One day he saw a widow walking down the street ''It's later'
He told her calmly and begun to discuss about life with her
He didn't know why he suddenly felt to touch her so tender
He understood her when she confessed her cried coeur
Saying that she had three grown children and she was very poor
And she had to work as housemaid at a loudmouthed boor
She was in pain and he felt that and to help her was his concern
He wanted to take care of her family asking nothing in return
He thought never to dishonor her acting as a father to her children
He begun to understand how unhappy was the woman he loved
When he left her for another one and she became so grieved
He asked her to talk about his feelings for her and she approved
He wanted to divorce to marry her and take care of her needs
Certainly he wanted to become an adoptive father of her kids
To make her the mother of his future children he made a bid
His wife didn't agree to divorce but he left her on her demand
He took the widow and went to find their soul in a far away land
His wife got crazy and she killed herself they found her on the sand
He went to her funeral to see her last time without annoyance
He begun to scream releasing something deeper and fierce
Without his wish releasing the prisoner of his conscience.

He Said
He said he loved me,
He said I was the one,
In the end he’s the one that shattered my heart,
He said he never loved another girl like he loved me,
He said I was the one girl he ever wanted in life,
In the end he’s the one that made me think twice what other guys say,
He said he would never cheat on me,
He said things I should believe,
In the end I didn’t believe the words that came out of his mouth,
He said he would never leave me,
He said he would be there for me,
In the end he was the one that cheated on me with my best friend,
He said things that wasn’t true,
He made a fool out of me,
He is the one to be blamed,
She is the one that made him think I was the one cheating on him,
She told him lies,
Fill his head with things that he never told me,
I knew things wasn’t right,
I knew he was cheating on me,
I made myself believe that he wouldn’t cheat on me,
I was wrong,
Wrong to believe in him or my so called friend,
He may had said a lot of things but in the end he lost me.

Ruiner
My heart is full of anger
although in Malawi there is no hunger
but i seek revenge in my heart
wherever, whenever i sat
She ruined my best day
while it was my girlfriend birthday
i sit making a promise to myself
i will never care for her like keeping books on shelves
Some of my good friends laugh at me
But my girlfriend still loved me
i call the girl who messed our nice day
the 'ruiner' as she made it a bad day
i felt being betrayed
as fewer friends cared
i got hope and courage from them
as i felt like i lived inside my heart with them
the ruiner made it a bad day of my life
as my mother was sick and i felt like swapping life
this was the day for me to suffer
as my anger in my heart was buffer
i promised my heart not ever talk to her again
since she though i was a bargain
now i had build hatred
i guess now red was friend
now she thought i was scullery
but to the ruiner i became smarmy
as she became crumy
since she doesnt know that life there is a fulcrum
my girlfriend cuddled like a pet
as we were together in a net
all i do is nat protaste
since i live in a peaceful state
