Smiles and flowers awaited my birth,
Named even before being born
I was the one they wanted
The one they waited for.
A girl, true to type,
Welcomed & celebrated by all.
The first born
The darling babe
Of uncles & aunts
Cousin brothers & sisters
& most importantly of my dad & ma
My name was well considered & discussed
It had to be universal & yet a symbol
of all that is good & pure
So it was Joy
A joy to all
My name a reminder to me
To be a joy to all
& yet the world around closing in on me
Each passing day
Telling my folks that after all
A girl is a girl
Be it joy or otherwise
They didn't waver
Or lose their faith or hope
When their ‘joy' returned
Deserted & lost cursing her fate
Of being born but not delivered
Of the age old burden
of being a woman
With her daughters
Unwanted & slighted
Their arms opened wide
To embrace not one but three
Joys to their aging bosoms
Born and delivered.

She’s A Running Girl

I don’t know who her parents were,
Her background is hazy,
She never talked about her past,
Because she’s just a running girl,
Never stays in one place too long,
Because she’s just a running girl,
And she was always just born to run.

On the run for something she didn’t do,
Disowned by all those who loved her,
Stabbed in the back and betrayed,
And in a flash she was staring down
The barrel of cops long black gun,
Caught in middle of nowhere,
Condemned for something she didn’t do.

There was a guy once,
Who tired to run with her,
Her got about a mile or so
Before he fell by the wayside,
Unable to carry on,
She didn’t want to leave him,
But she couldn’t stop running.

I know you’ll never stop,
Because you’re a running girl,
Just born to keep moving.
Maybe someday you’ll
Have someone to run with you,
So you won’t be alone.
A running life’s a lonely life,
But it’s the only one you’ve got.

You’re just a running girl,
You were always just born to run.

He did his schooling
When I was not even
Born.

He passed his graduation
When I was just born!

He came to this world
Much before I was born.

Yet when he writes,
Every poesy of his
Smiles with the innocence
Of a new-born!

With every poetry,
He dons a new birth

Of a baby born!

It's true
Mental age
Has nothing to do
With chronological age.

Physically,
He may be
Old and fragile.

A Mother's Collection: Tissues, Bones, And Blood (fourth)

Fourth Born

While they were carefully restoring
The damaged done to the sacred house
I heard a whisper in my ear,
“Mother you have a baby girl.”
I had thought I would have another
boy and would call him “Lanzy- granddaddy’s name”

Like my first born, I asked myself, what to do with
This little pink bundle of joy?
Oh my, a girl! Your dad jumped for joy for
the little girl born of my tears, tears, and pains.

Now a quarter century later- right before my eyes-
You’ve become a beautiful daughter, wife, mother, and sister.
Your passion to be and to do your best is evident in all of this.

A mother learns much from her daughter:
To be a good listener,
An astute debater who gets in the last word.
To be caring and compassionate.
Be her mother instead of her girl friend…
Our reign as females are evident in all of these.

Now allow me to present my gift to you…
Oh, how I wish to give you diamonds and sapphires;
