A Man Of Faith-A Tribute To Dr. King

It was a time of unrest the sixties did bring.
A man of faith did have a dream.
As the Motown Sound played in many mother’s home,
Their sons were in Vietnam, where the fight by us would never be won.
Back home, the struggles for Civil Rights, we had set the tone.

I was a child when all this begin.
In a society blinded by discrimination,
Spawn by segregation.
It was difficult to understand.
Along came a man to struggle this hate.
A man of destiny was about to tempt his fate.

Years earlier, this man of responsibilities heard about injustice pertaining to a seat.
In the Deep South, his plights took heat.
Yet, he took it on.
His determination was strong.
The Country knew the start of Civil Rights was born.

A peacemaker was he.
It was nonviolence he did seek.
With the Lord on his side, how could he go wrong?

On April the 4th, his life was cut short.
An assassin’s bullet shot him surrounded by his cohorts.
Our pain was great.
Our revenge was our desire.
Before we knew it, the cities were on fire.

Needing hope and guidance to restore our confidence.
Needing wisdom and understanding so all of this could make sense.
We had to wake up and remember.
He stood for nonviolence or were we all just dense?

Over the years, the wars continued-the fall of regimes.
Do we remember the sacrifices of this man named King?
His journey did end but his glory found.
If we don’t remember, we are still trouble bound.

After all these years, I can let it be said.
Injustice and discrimination still rear their ugly heads.
For every night, I turn and twist.
I try to clear my mind a bit.
I know this world is still in conflict.

No interruptions were at my door, I can inform.
I sat alone on January 15,2007 and I wrote this poem.
I thought of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mr. Malcolm X, and Mr. Medgar Evers.
They fought for social change in their own way.
Man, how difficult it was for one of them to even get a holiday.

In 2007, new leaders emerged to carry us through:
Governor Deval Patrick, Mayor Shirley Franklin, and yes,
(Now President) O’Bama and Ms. Oprah Winfrey too.

However, let us not forget the work of Dr. King and all that it means.
For this courageous man of faith-he did have a dream.
Thank you God for sending us Dr. Martin Luther King.

Martin Luther King Junior

Today is Martin Luther King Junior's birthday; a day that we celebrate.
Without his influence, Barack Obama probably wouldn't be the President of the United States.
He wanted black people to have equal rights.
He didn't cower in the face of this fight.
He knew that some people are consumed by hate.
Sadly one of those people took his life in 1968.
Martin Luther King Junior died for what he believed in.
People shouldn't be prejudice because of the color of skin.

King

KING
' Martin Luther King

and that he was

a man of great moral

a leader because he led by example

KING

what makes a man a king

his determination to lead his people

his commitment, his drive

KING

a father

a husband

a friend

a Leader

For whom left his mark as KING

Man of the century to many who knew his pain

his struggle

Name another man who put his life in the teeth if death for a cause more than King

and for that same reason,

That Farther, Husband, Friend and Leader

Remains most of all

KING'

From Greece To Rome (Part Two)

it took the civil rights movement,
the women's movement,
and the laborer's movement...
led by such as Cesar Chavez,
Martin Luther King, Malcolm X,
James Baldwin, Maya Angelou,
just to mention a few.
imprisonment, beatings, marches,
and many are dead now,
sacrificed to the cause.
JFK warned of secret societies,
wanted to pull out of Vietnam...
his brother Bobby stood up
for justice against the wheel...
both killed by the machine.
over 40,000 killed in Vietnam,
riots in the cities of America.
Nixon lied, America fell into stupor,
and those who believed
became part of the masses.
yet now, a turn for the worse!

A Tribute Fits for a Great King

Bring the drums, the flute and the trombone.
Bring the clarinet, the guitars and the saxophone,
So we can honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Junior,
Who was the King of the Civil Rights Movement. No one can ignore
His sacrifices for mankind and his dedications
To world’s peace and justice. His contributions
To our world are enormous. Dr. King is still a beacon of hope,
A man who did not believe in giving up. He was the Pope
Who espoused humanity, decency and love for all.
He was not a tall man, however, he dreamt BIG not small.
Dr. King was a giant in every meaning of the word.
He was not a violent man, but his tongue was a powerful sword,
Who pierced the rhinoceros skin of racism and injustice.
Today, I feel blessed to write about this man of peace and justice,
This gentleman of tolerance and love, and this brother,
Who never ceased to inspire me, especially in my darkest hours.
Bring the children, the elders and the crippled to honor
The King of hope and perseverance. Bring the flowers of all colors,
To celebrate his insurmountable tasks and great accomplishments.
Come to shower such an icon with endearing compliments.
Bring the drums, the tuba and the trombone.
Bring the clarinet, the banjos and the saxophone,
So we can honor the King and his disciples,
Who challenged the status quo, and who won with flying colors.
Let’s have a ticker-tape parade; come and read the articles
Of the struggle. Bring the confetti, bring the flowers
To thank all brave men and women who marched peacefully
At his side. Dr. King’s legacy will live eternally,
And his dream of equality will never die.
Ring the bells. Let’s sing, let’s chant and cry
Out loud to wish Our Brother a HAPPY BIRTHDAY,
And let’s continue to hope and to pray for a better day.

They Killed Him

There was a man named mahatma ghandi
He would not bow down, he would not fight
He knew the deal was down and dirty
And nothing wrong could make it right away
But he knew his duty, and the price he had to pay
Just another holy man who tried to make a stand
My god, they killed him !
Another man from atlanta, georgia
By the name of martin luther king
He shook the land like rolling thunder
And made the bells of freedom ring today
With a dream of beauty that they could not burn away
Just another holy man who dared to be a friend
My god, they killed him !
The only son of God almighty
The holy one called jesus christ
Healed the lame and fed the hungry
And for his love they took his life away
On the road to glory where the story never ends
Just the holy son of man well never understand
My god, they killed him !
Sing about mahatma ghandi
Sing of martin luther king
Sing of jesus christ almighty
And the brothers kennedy

I Have a Scheme

“Too long, this land has walked in darkness
Her steps dogged by doubt and despair.”
“Today I come with my solution:
Say the Pledge and say a prayer.”
A great turnout, three hundred Thousand
Overflowed the grassy Mall
Up on Lincoln’s Memorial Steps
Glen and Sarah were enthralled.
There, where Martin had made History,
They evoked a brighter day.
An America with pride and courage-
Where, before tests, school kids could pray.
Restore the country, restore our honor
Turn the country back to God
Sarah Palin invoked King
(which seemed at least a trifle odd.)
Something beyond imagination
Taking place before our eyes:
People showing love of country,
Not spreading hate, nor spewing lies.
Forty Seven years before
Martin Luther King had stood
Upon these steps and told a dream
which, in time, all understood.

They Killed Them!

my hero when i was a kid
was Crazy Horse.... they killed him!
my mother wanted me to be
a preacher, so i read about Jesus,
and His life... they killed Him!
when i was nine years old,
and in the fourth grade,
they killed JFK in Dallas....
just before he pulled us
out of the Vietnam lie......

by this time i had questions,
i knew something was wrong....
they went on to kill Martin Luther King,
Robert Kennedy, Malcolm X......
anybody that stood up for
what they believed.....
they killed them!

the fear of ignorant apathy,
the murderer that betrays humanity!

Welcome to the Future - Brad Paisley

When I was ten years old,
I remember thinkin' how cool it would be,
When we were goin' on an eight hour drive,
If I could just watch tv.
And I'd have given anything
To have my own PacMan game at home.
I used to have to get a ride down to the arcade,
Now I've got it on my phone.

He-e-ey...
Glory, glory, hallelujah.
Welcome to the future.

My grandpa was in World War II,
He fought against the Japanese.
He wrote a hundred letters to my grandma;
Mailed them from his base in the Philippines.
I wish they could see this now,
Where they say this change can go.
Cause I was on a video chat this morning,
With a company in Tokyo.

He-e-ey...
Everyday is a revolution.
Welcome to the future.

He-e-ey...
Look around, it's all so clear.
He-e-ey...
Wherever we would go and well, we...
He-e-ey...
So many things I never thought I'd see...
Happening right in front of me.

I had a friend in school,
Running-back on a football team,
They burned a cross in his front yard
For asking out the home-coming queen.

I thought about him today,
Everybody who's seen what he's seen,
From a woman on a bus,
To a man with a dream.

He-e-ey...
Wake up, Martin Luther.
Welcome to the future.

He-e-ey...
Glory, glory, hallelujah.
Welcome to the future.

Southern Heroes

One day the South will recognize its real heroes,
Martin Luther King Jr wrote a letter to white men from jail,
Who would rather that the courts settle racial segregation,
Where white judges make sure that they don't prevail.

After years of always hearing the word 'wait',
Which almost always meant never instead,
The bomb that exploded a church filled with children,
All for not being what the white men considered 'purebred'.

One day, the South will have to see the real heroes,
Like the man fresh from war when he took a bus to go home
Corporal Roman Duckworth Jr went to see his sick wife,
Killed because they thought he was a freedom rider who didn’t drone.

A full measure of truth and justice,
Is what they wanted to figure out
So many heroes like Dahmer killed,
Who gave a job to any colour without any doubt.

And what about Mrs Viola Liuzzo?
The amazing woman who was transporting
Those who needed a ride between marches,
Shot for being someone supporting.

Both sides had many supporters
But if the Klan was so good and so great,
And all the blacks wanted was to vote,
Why did they feel the need to retaliate?

They killed innocent kids,
Destroyed families aplenty,
They chose to make examples
Of many more then twenty.

But what good is a group,
Who only live to make the world 'pure',
What's the point of having someone
Who explains how to kill in a brochure.

Would you listen to the men
Who shot Reverend George Lee,
The man who convinced people to vote,
The man whose face became debris.

So why, why did they listen?
To the crazy power hungry Klan,
Turning their backs on the cries
Voiced by blacks when hurt by the white man.

Will one day the South learn of the true heroes?
One day, will they respect and honour the truth?
Will there be justice and peace for the restless souls
Plenty of whom were killed in the bloom of youth.

The true heroes are not the ones still standing,
But the ones who died for their beliefs,
The ones who stood tall like the hat of the KKK,
And didn’t back down from the life-taking sneak thieves.

The leader of the bunch was quite a man of speech,
Dr Martin Luther King Jr had a dream,
With his powerful voice he shared that dream
Let freedom ring, let them scream!

Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!

A/N: This was for my Writer's Craft final project. I did it on the Civil Rights Movement, against the KKK. Now, it was supposed to be a ballad, but I wanted more of a truthful thing, so I changed it from your typical ballad, and now it's sort of a free verse ballad.
Please review or message me, I'd love to know what you think about this.
Thanks,
Dani

7 O'Clock News / Silent Night

Silent night, holy night.
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and child.
Holy Infant, so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace...
Sleep in heavenly peace.
This is the early evening edition of the news.
The recent fight in the House of Representatives over the open housing section of the Civil Rights Bill brought traditional enemies together, but it left the defenders of the measure without the votes of their strongest supporters. President Johnson originally proposed an outright ban covering discrimination by everyone for every type of housing, but it had no chance from the start and everyone in Congress knew it. A compromise was painfully worked out in the House Judiciary Committee.
In Los Angeles today comedian Lenny Bruce died of what was believed to be an overdose of narcotics. Bruce was 42 years old.
Dr. Martin Luther King says he does not intend to cancel plans for an open housing march Sunday into the Chicago suburb of Cicero. Cook County Sheriff Richard Ogleby asked King to call of the march, and the police in Cicero said they would ask the National Guard to be called out if it is held. King, now in Atlanta, Georgia, plans to return to Chicago Tuesday.
In Chicago, Richard Speck, accused murderer of nine student nurses, was brought before a grand jury today for indictment. The nurses were found stabbed and strangled in their Chicago apartment.
In Washington, the atmosphere was tense today as a special sub-committee of the House Committee on Un-American Activities continued its probe into anti-Viet Nam war protests. Demonstrators were forcibly evicted from the hearings when they began chanting anti-war slogans. Former Vice President Richard Nixon says that unless there is a substantial increase in the present war effort in Viet Nam, the US should look forward to five more years of war. In a speech before the Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in New York, Nixon also said opposition to the war in this country is the greatest single weapon working against the US.
Thats the 7 oclock edition of the news. Goodnight.

I Am Apart Of History

I am apart of history
History lies deep down inside of me
I am like Martin Luther King
Just like him I'm going to let freedom ring
I am like Mary Bethune
Because like Maya Angelou I walk like I got oil wells pumping in my living room
I am apart of history
History is important to me
I am like Charles DREW
Like him I can be a scientist too
I am like Malcolm X
Come on my sisters and brothers we have to stop that
I am like Chainey, Schwenger and Moore
I will get people to vote I will go to every door
I am apart of history
I accept the rights my ancestors gave to me
I am like Jackie Robinson
Lokking in the sky at my home runs
I am like Harriet Tubman
Taking slaves to their freedom land
I am like Medgar Evers
Like him I too can be clever
I am like Barack Obama
Rising above to greatness despite the drama
I am apart of history
History is deep down inside of me
