A ballad that we do not perish

Those who sailed at dawn
but will never return
left their trace on a wave--

a shell fell to the bottom of the sea
beautiful as lips turned to stone

those who walked on a sandy road
but could not reach the shuttered windows
though they already saw the roofs--

they have found shelter in a bell of air

but those who leave behind only
a room grown cold a few books
an empty inkwell white paper--

in truth they have not completely died
their whisper travels through thickets of wallpaper
their level head still lives in the ceiling

their paradise was made of air
of water lime and earth an angel of wind
will pulverize the body in its hand
they will be
carried over the meadows of this world

take this empty paper cup
i have in my hand
it is empty
and you will fill it
i ask of you

you think of the hot water
and coffee
so i may not sleep for days

you change your mind
you take the cup
and fill it with coldness
like chunks of ice

no i will not crack
on this sudden change
like the empty cup
in your hand
i am simply made of paper

throw me crumple me
i am prepared and i really
do not mind at all

i have always felt
the same love for you

One

One, where the pale sea foamed at the yellow sand,
With wave upon slowly shattering wave,
Turned to the city of towers as evening fell;
And slowly walked by the darkening road toward it;
And saw how the towers darkened against the sky;
And across the distance heard the toll of a bell.

Along the darkening road he hurried alone,
With his eyes cast down,
And thought how the streets were hoarse with a tide of people,
With clamor of voices, and numberless faces . . .
And it seemed to him, of a sudden, that he would drown
Here in the quiet of evening air, These empty and voiceless places . . .
And he hurried towards the city, to enter there.

Along the darkening road, between tall trees
That made a sinister whisper, loudly he walked.
Behind him, sea-gulls dipped over long grey seas.
Before him, numberless lovers smiled and talked.
And death was observed with sudden cries,
And birth with laughter and pain.
And the trees grew taller and blacker against the skies
And night came down again.

Reach Out, I'll Be There

Now if you feel that you can't go on
Because all your hope is gone
And your life is filled with much confusion
And happiness is just an illusion
And the world around is tumblin' down
Darling, reach out
Come on, girl, reach out, for me, reach out for me.
I'll be there with the love I'll shelter you
I'll be there with the love I'll see you through
When you're alone and about to give up
'cause your best just ain't good enough
And you feel the world has grown cold
And you're driftin' on all on your own
When you need a hand to hold
Darling, reach out
Come on, girl, reach out, for me, reach out for me.
I'll be there with the love I'll comfort you
I'll be there with the love I'll see you through
I'll be there now baby you can always count on me
Reach out baby
I can tell the way you hang your head
You are alone now, and you're afraid
Through your tears you look around
But there's no peace of mind to be found
I know what you're thinking
You're alone now, with no love of your own
Darling, come on girl
Reach out for me
Reach out for me
I'll be there with the love I'll shelter you
I'll be there with the love I'll comfort you
I'll be there now baby, you're always a friend of me
I'll be there with the love I'll comfort you
No, run to me
Cause I'll be there, baby
I will always shelter you
When you feel like you can't go on

The Creation of the Moon

The man cut his throat and left his head there.
The others went to get it.
When they got there they put the head in a sack.
Farther on the head fell out onto the ground.
They put the head back in the sack.
Farther on the head fell out again.
Around the first sack they put a second one that
was thicker.
But the head fell out just the same.
It should be explained that they were taking the head
to show to the others.
They did not put the head back in the sack.
They left it in the middle of the road.
They went away.

They crossed the river.
But the head followed them.
They climbed up a tree full of fruit
to see whether it would go past.

The head stopped at the foot of the tree
and asked them for some fruit.
So the men shook the tree.
The head went to get the fruit.
Then it asked for some more.

So the men shook the tree
so that the fruit fell into the water.
The head said it couldn't get the fruit from there.
So the men threw the fruit a long way
to make the head go a long way to get it so they could go.
While the head was getting the fruit
the men got down from the tree and went on.

The head came back and looked at the tree
and didn't see anybody
so went on rolling down the road.

The men had stopped to wait
to see whether the head would follow them.
They saw the head come rolling.

They ran.
They got to their hut they told the others that the head
was rolling after them and to shut the door.

All the huts were closed tight.
When it got there the head commanded them to open the doors.
The owners would not open them because they were afraid.

So the head started to think what it would turn into.
If it turned into water they would drink it.
If it turned into earth they would walk on it.
If it turned into a house they would live in it.
If it turned into a steer they would kill it and eat it.
If it turned into a cow they would milk it.
If it turned into a bean they would cook it.
If it turned into the sun
When men were cold it would heat them.
If it turned into rain the grass would grow and the
animals would crop it.

So it thought, and it said, "I will turn into the moon."
It called, "Open the doors, I want to get my things."
They would not open them.

The head cried. It called out, "At least give me
my two balls of twine."
They threw out the two balls of twine through a hole.
It took them and threw them into the sky.

It asked them to throw it a little stick too
to roll the thread around so it could climb up.

Then it said, "I can climb, I am going to the sky."
It started to climb.

The men opened the doors right away.
The head went on climbing.
The men shouted, "You going to the sky, head?"
It didn't answer.

As soon as it got to the Sun
it turned into the Moon.
Toward evening the Moon was white, it was beautiful.
And the men were surprised
to see that the head had turned into the Moon.

Looking for Water

Still the leaves are spinning 'round
Take my hand as we go down, and down, and down
Looking for water
Well, our light's gone in a New York minute
Don't know about you, but my heart's not in it
(Looking, looking, looking)
I'm looking for water
I'm looking for water
(Looking, looking, looking)
I can't breathe the air, can't raise a fact
'Cause all we've got left is a beat in the night, and I'm
(Looking for water)
Looking for water
(Looking for water)
(Looking, looking)
Take my hand as we go down, and down
Leave it all behind, nothing could be found
(I'm, looking for water)
I'm looking for water
(Looking for water)
(Looking, looking)
(I, looking for water)
Looking everywhere
(Looking for water)
Looking here and there
(I'm looking for water)
I'm looking for water
(Looking for water)
(Looking, looking)
I can't live in this cage, I can't eat this candy
The edge of the earth to the spin in my head
The look in your eyes and never means never
The dawn's early light, baby, dark is forever
(Looking, looking)
(Looking, looking)
(Looking for water)
(Looking, looking)
I
(Looking for water)
(Looking for water)
(Looking, looking)
I
(Looking for water)
(Looking for water)
(Looking, looking)
I
(Looking for water)
(Looking for watter)
Looking, looking)
I
(Looking for water)
(Looking for watter)
Looking, looking)
I
(Looking for water)
(Looking for watter)

No Man's Land

Not to an angel but a friend
He turned at the day's bitter end.
It was so comforting to feel
Some one was near, to see him kneel
By the deep shell-hole's edge: to know
He was not left to the fierce foe.

This soldier who had eased his head
And staunched the flow where it had bled,
Who made a pillow of his breast
Where the poor tossing head might rest,
Wore a young face he used to know
Yesterday, some time, long ago.

The night's cold it was bitter enough,
But who shall keep the fierce Day off?
And must he lie, be burnt and baked
In the hot sands, with lips unslaked? --
Will no one give him dews and rain?
Lord, send the frozen night again!

But here's the one who comforted!
No angel, but a boy instead,
Slender and young, above him leans:
The sands are changed to tender greens;
He hears the wind in the sycamore
Sing a low song by his mother's door.

Such tender touches to his wound,
Such loving arms to clasp him round,
Until they find him the third day!
The stretcher-bearers heard him say,
Don't leave me, Denis! I am here.'
Denis? But Denis died last year!

He will maintain that Denis was
Beside him in his bitter case,
Denis more beautiful and gay
Than in the dear, remembered day:
God sent no angel, but a friend
To save him at the bitter end.

Sandy

Stranded at the drive-in
Branded as a fool
What will they say monday at school
Sandy
Cant you see Im in misery
We made a start
Now were apart
Theres nothing left for me
Love has grown
All alone I sit and wonder why
Why you left me
Oh sandy
O sandy baby
Someday when hi-i-i--igh school is done
Somehow someway our two worlds will be one
In heaven forever and ever we will be
Oh please say youll stay
Oh sandy
(spoken)
Sandy my darling you hurt me real bad
You know its true
But baby you gotta believe when I say
Im helpless without you
Love has grown all alone
I sit and wonder why-y-y oh why you left me
Oh sandy
Sandy, sandy
Why oh sandy

Head, Perhaps Of An Angel

limestone, with traces of polychromy, c. 1250

Point Dume was the point,
he said, but we never came close,
no matter how far we walked the shale
broken from California.

Someone's garden
had slipped, hanging itself by a vine
from the cliffs of some new Babylon
past Malibu.

Drowning the words,
the wind didn't fling back in our faces,
the Pacific washed up a shell:
around an alabastron

of salt water for the dead,
seaweed rustled its papers, drying them out,
until it died. Waves kept crashing
into the heart

of each shell
I held to my ear like a phone,
but they were just the waves of my blood.
And through it all

I heard him say,
how could it be nine months ago
his grandson had taken his own life,
somewhere back east?

He was fifteen.
O Pacific, what good is our grief?
Something screamed at the sandy child
who poured seawater

into a hole.
Child, you'll never empty the ocean,
Augustine said. How can I believe?
The wet fist of a wave

dissolved in sand.
Like a saint, a seagull flapped down the beach
in search of something raw—an angel
with an empty pail?

No, a teenage boy,
hands big as a man's, held a sea slug
quaking like an aspic. Under a rock, another
drew into its body

a creature
larger than itself. Live, said Death,
to child and childless alike, indifferently.
I am coming.

Deeper Well

(dave ohey/daniel lanois/emmylou harris)
The sun burned hot, it burned my eyes
Burned so hot I thought Id died
Thought Id died and gone to hell
Lookin for the water from a deeper well
I went to the river but the river was dry
I fell to my knees an I looked to the sky
I looked to the sky and the spring rain fell
I saw the water from a deeper well
Well...lookin for the water from a deeper well
Well...lookin for the water from a deeper well
I was ready for love I was ready for the money
Ready for the blood and ready for the honey
Ready for the winnin, ready for the bell
Lookin for the water from a deeper well
I found some love and I found some money
Found that blood would drip from the honey
Found I had a thirst that I could not quell
Lookin for the water from a deeper well
Well...lookin for the water from a deeper well
Well...lookin for the water from a deeper well
Well I did it for kicks and I did it for faith
I did it for lust and I did it for hate
I did it for need and I did it for love
Addiction stayed on tight like a glove
So I ran with the moon and I ran with the night
And the three of us were a terrible sight
Nipple to the bottle to the gun to the cell
To the bottom of a hole of a deeper well
Well...lookin for the water from a deeper well
Well...lookin for the water from a deeper well
I rocked with the cradle and I rolled with the rage
I shook those walls and I rattled that gage
I took my trouble down a deadend trail
Reachin out a hand for a holier grail
Hey there mama did you carry that load
Did you tell your baby bout the bend in the road
bout the rebel yell bout the one that fell
Lookin for the water from a deeper well
Well...lookin for the water from a deeper well
Well...lookin for the water from a deeper well

The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul

The man who sailed around his soul
From east to west, from pole to pole
With ego as his drunken captain
Greed, the mutineer, had trapped all reason in the hold
The man who walked across his heart
Who took no compass, guide or chart
To rope and tar his blood congealed
When he found his self revealed ugly and cold
And the sirens that sing
By your nose with its ring
Theyll drag you in
For your sins
Now he sits all alone
And its no place like home
Its empty skin
A bag to keep lifes souvenirs in
The man who sailed around his soul
The man who sailed around his soul
The man who sailed around his soul
Came back again to find a hole
Where once he thought compassion and the truth
Had laid to warm his freezing carcass on return
The man who walked across his heart
Was doomed to journey from the start
Of every love affair hed broken
All the lies hed ever spoken
Tattooed on his arm
And the jellyfish stings
Even angels with wings
Who look too deep
And dare to peep
Now he sits all alone
Knowing flesh blood and bone
Is everything
He found the treasure hed been seeking
The man who sailed around his soul

Terry And Rihana's Trauma

'Terry here, have it, take it and go! Leave!
Make sure you reach Antuwana before sunset, , you'll find me there at the hills of Monafa waiting for you..and from there, I'll fly away with you to my paradise'...

that was rihana, offering her wings to terry, an angel that the young lad terry happened to meet while he was fishing and he made a wish that he wanted to fall in love with an angel, , he wanted an angel to be his first love...

Love struck so hard
The angel surrendered her wings just to have him earned
His life on the line as he flew and backtracked
An untold love story just about to emerge

He waited and waited
So long that he doubted
If he was enchanted
By that witch that he hated
But the angel rihana soon entered
In her arms he wanted
To build his refuge till he fainted
And breath his last breathe

Turning white as she cries
Shaking him while she tries
To wake him up but the dice
Turned against her as she iced
Left this world and in her vow lies
She won't return for she's hurt!

I Must Have Been Sleeping

'Where are you going, ' I heard her say
As the dream took me straight to the core,
We parked at the side of a very long road
And I got out the driver's door;
'I've never known that, ' I replied, and she sat
On her hands, with the pain of surprise,
'So what you've been saying has never been true! '
The tears rose up in her eyes!

'The road has been long, the road has been wide,
I never knew where I could turn.'
'I thought you were happy with me, ' she said;
There was nothing to say in return.
'I must have been sleeping for seventeen years, '
My voice sounded foreign and coarse,
But I couldn't handle the sighs and the lies,
Or the terrible sound of - 'divorce! '

I walked to the wood at the side of the road,
And followed the pathway around,
I couldn't look back now I'd made up my mind
Though I walked unfamiliar ground,
The clearing was quiet, the birds didn't sing,
A mountain rose up in my view,
I suddenly saw there was no going back
To the comfortable life that I knew.

I cast off my shackles and took a deep breath,
To breathe in both freedom and pride,
My strength was returning, and clearer my eye,
I walked with a bounce in my stride,
The years fell away, I was thirty again,
I stopped then, and sat on a stone,
For darkness was gathering there in the gloom
With that terrible feeling - alone!

I thought of the woman I'd left on the road,
Who'd always been faithful to me,
The tears that she'd shed for a love that was dead
Made me sad, and ashamed to be free,
I thought of the comfort she'd given me when
All my world started going insane,
She'd cooked and she'd cared, and she'd loved and she'd shared
And I'd given her nothing but pain.

I turned on the track, and I made my way back
But I couldn't see where I had been,
I stumbled through thickets and walked into trees
And I fell on my knees on the green.
'I am lost, I am lost, ' I cried into the night
Then I heard her voice, dim, by a tree
And woke to her stroking my face and my brow
As I cried… She was waiting for me!

Most Beautiful One

Tell me, why isn't there any more room left in your heart,
Most beautiful one of them all?
when you can't be found, the whole world falls apart.
Most beautiful one of them all.

It saddened me greatly,
like bridesmaids or daisies,
you told me you loved me not.
Now, I won't get my fill,
I have lost my free will
to the most beautiful one of them all.

I'll send a quick cable
as soon as I'm able
most beautiful one of them all.
In it, I'll tell you I'm fine,
while I'm losing my mind.
Most beautiful one of them all.

For a peck on the lips,
that was one helluva kiss.
I thought I'd felt everything
til I felt this.
Whatever the stakes,
I just can't resist,
the most beautiful one of them all.

Nearly died by the phone,
awaiting your call.
Most beautiful one of them all.
Where there could be a door
there's no entrance at all.
Most beautiful one of them all.
though shaken and nervous,
I'm still blood thick in your service,
Where, but here, could this have led
from the start?

I tried walking your horses,
before hitching the cart,
to the most beautiful one of them all.

Is that why there isn't any more room left in your heart,
Most beautiful one of them all?
My one and my only,
must we be apart?
Most beautiful one of them all.

No other's so right.
I'd rather lose than not fight
for your spotlights of neon, sunshine or moonlight.
You're what always and still gets me
through cold, lonely nights.
Most beautiful one of them all.

Tell me why isn't there any more room left in your heart?
Most beautiful one of them all.
When you can't be found my whole world falls apart.
Most beautiful one of them all.
It saddened me greatly like bridesmaids or daisies when you
told me you loved me not.
Now I won't get my fill til I've lost my free will to
the most beautiful one of them all.

Marburg

I quivered. I flared up, and then was extinguished.
I shook. I had made a proposal - but late,
Too late. I was scared, and she had refused me.
I pity her tears, am more blessed than a saint.

I stepped into the square. I could be counted
Among the twice-born. Every leaf on the lime,
Every brick was alive, caring nothing for me,
And reared up to take leave for the last time.

The paving-stones glowed and the street's brow was swarthy,
From under their lids the cobbles looked grim,
Scowled up at the sky, and the wind like a boatman
Was rowing through limes. And each was an emblem.

Be that as it may, I avoided their glances,
Averted my gaze from their greeting or scowling.
I wanted no news of their getting and spending.
I had to get out, so as not to start howling.

The tiles were afloat, and an unblinking noon
Regarded the rooftops. And someone, somewhere
In Marburg, was whistling, at work on a crossbow,
And someone else dressing for the Trinity fair.

Devouring the clouds, the sand showed yellow,
A storm wind was rocking the bushes to and fro,
And the sky had congealed where it touched a sprig
Of woundwort that staunched its flow.

Like any rep Romeo hugging his tragedy,
I reeled through the city rehearsing you.
I carried you all that day, knew you by heart
From the comb in your hair to the foot in your shoe.

And when in your room I fell to my knees,
Embracing this mist, this perfection of frost
(How lovely you are!), this smothering turbulence,
What were you thinking? 'Be sensible!' Lost!

Here lived Martin Luther. The Brothers Grimm, there.
And all things remember and reach out to them:
The sharp-taloned roofs. The gravestones. The trees.
And each is alive. And each is an emblem.

I shall not go tomorrow. Refusal -
More final than parting. We're quits. áll is clear.
And if I abandon the streetlamps, the banks -
Old pavingstones, what will become of me here?

The mist on all sides will unpack its bags,
In both windows will hang up a moon.
And melancholy will slide over the books
And settle with one on the ottoman.

Then why am I scared? Insomnia I know
Like grammar, by heart. I have grown used to that.
In line with the four square panes of my window
Dawn will lay out her diaphanous mat.

The nights now sit down to play chess with me
Where ivory moonlight chequers the floor.
It smells of acacia, the windows are open,
And passion, a grey witness, stands by the door.

The poplar is king. I play with insomnia.
The queen is a nightingale I can hear calling.
I reach for the nightingale. And the night wins.
The pieces make way for the white face of morning.

Hurricane Katrina

You came in seeking to destroy and ravage a city
You took so many lives and homes what a pity
Families separated, bused here and there
Some never to find each other any where

You took what they built their whole lives
In an instant was gone, left only with knives
And hammers and anything to cut the the roofs
Leaving behind every thing they knew

Some leaving with the clothes on their back
Some came bringing only a small sack
Some had to wade through waters so dirty and deep
And stay on a broken highway or some other street

The ones that had nothing, they had to loot
Some for days without any water or food
The city told some to stay in a dome
That was total hell and they were left to roam

The water kept rising in their too
It was filth and choas and like a zoo
Some stayed behind and tried to live
Some couldn't afford to leave, had nothing to give

Some stayed because they couldn't leave their pet
And those forced out haven't found them yet
Everyone is scratching their head on who to blame
Who knows who dropped the ball, what a shame?

Some left who died, just put a sheet over their head
Some in nursing homes, left to die in their bed
Oh what devastation you left behind
You will always be kept in our mind

Making love with art, religion, philosophy, putting passion in all the proper places of the earth...

i made love to books
kissed each page
hugged each chapter like
no other
licked all its covers
slept with it for years

and i made love to
a career
all years showered without spare
my hours are dissertations
all days marked with treatises
all hours danced with
possibilities about a new realm
of academic stairs

i wore caps, those black ones
i was obsessed with black robes
tickling life
with probes

murdering the birth of lofty desires
my life is miserable
without the passion with you

your body i have drawn in canvass
and i throw away all paints
and Chinese brushes burned

your gaze i sculpted on a tree
and the tree was cut
turned into firewood
ashed...

passion is still there wiggling
like blood in the veins of my arms
pulsating like a breathing salamander
on the ceiling

the room breathes at me
the bed creaks
because i am lying about myself
and suppressed what should have been more

passionate on the grass
and the shores of the white sandy beaches
somewhere in my dreams
the wildest ones

but i learned a lot of wisdom then
got an A+ on restraint
cooling down
like winter ice like beautiful crystals
on my palm

and i learned where to put passion
somewhere
where i can be perfect again like
the gods of the witty wind

i made love to books
ejaculated on each page
licked each hard page

and i have learned to live
my life
like a gentleman in the room
where faces of men
are straight like Gibraltar pillars

their arms made of marble
their minds
solid as steel and i do not stop
to put where passion must be put
in the proper places of this earth

i made love to mountains
kissed the fog
and licked each cloud
slept on cliffs and
got high
on the wings of the birds of my
youth and
imagination

i am entangled on the white thighs
of poetry

my soul my body my hands
made captive
all century....

and i made love with freedom
penetrated love,
ate passion
chewed religion
and i made love with art and i made love
with philosophy

and now, everyone loves me
or at least that is what
i think to be....

Story Of A Fallen Angel

I saw her drop, her wings spread wide
Her eyes bright gold, and terrified
She covered up her face and cried
The angel falling from the skies...
I ran my best, I tried and tried
to reach the spot where she'd collide
with earth and stone, wind, sea and tide
The angel falling from the skies...
But suddenly, the angel sighed
her face grew stony, petrified
And then I realized she'd died
The angel who fell from the skies...

How Beautiful U R

How Beautiful u r

You r beautiful
Not only because of the curve of your hips
Or the shape of your body
Not only because of the fullness of your lips
Or the curl of your eye lashes

You r beautiful because you want to be
You r beautiful because God made you that way
You r beautiful in my eyes
There is no one more beautiful than you

You r beautiful because you have a heart
And that is a beautiful thing
You r beautiful because you have a brain
And that is a beautiful thing
You r beautiful because you give advice
And that is a beautiful thing

You r beautiful because you want to be
You r beautiful because God made you that way
You r beautiful in my eyes
There is no one more beautiful than you

You r beautiful because you have confidence
You r beautiful because you have determination and wit
You r beautiful because you have goals and you plan to reach them
You r beautiful because you always there to lend a helping hand

You r beautiful because you want to be
You r beautiful because God made you that way
You r beautiful in my eyes
There is no one more beautiful than You
