Ode to a Young Lady
[Somewhat Too Solicitious about Her Manner of Expression]
Survey, my fair! that lucid stream,
Adown the smiling valley stray;
Would Art attempt, or Fancy dream,
To regulate its winding way?
So pleas'd I view thy shining hair
In loose dishevell'd ringlets flow:
Not all thy art, not all thy care,
Can there one single grace bestow.
Survey again that verdant hill,
With native plants enamell'd o'er;
Say, can the painter's utmost skill
Instruct one flower to please us more?
As vain it were, with artful dye
To change the bloom thy cheeks disclose;
And oh may Laura, ere she try,
With fresh vermilion paint the rose.
Hark how the wood-lark's tuneful throat
Can every study'd grace excel;
Let Art constrain the rambling note,
And will she, Laura, please so well?
Oh ever keep thy native ease,
By no pedantic law confin'd!
For Laura's voice is form'd to please,
So Laura's words be not unkind.

Laura
Laura is the face in the misty lights
Footsteps that you hear down the hall
The laugh that floats on a summer night
That you can never quite recall
And you see laura on the train that is passing through
Those eyes how familiar they seem
She gave your very first kiss to you
That was laura but shes only a dream
And you see laura on the train that is passing through
Those eyes how familiar they seem
She gave your very first kiss to you
That was laura but shes only a dream

Laura Said It Wasn't Red
Look real quickly over there
The hottest girl with auburn hair
She's a beauty not a queen
Queens don't come in red and green
Redhead hot now it's your turn
She will make your fingers burn
Laura said, 'it isn't red!
' 'Auburn is it's shade instead'
Redheads quickly fog my glasses
Redheads have the hottest asses
Watch out for their terse replies
Redheads wise and cause demise
I loved Laura with hair not red
Then i begged her into bed
Laura's body was divine
The demise was mine all mine
Laura begged me into bed
Laura said her hair ain't red
Who am i to disagree?
She took my virginity

(mercer/raskin - additional lyrics by carly simon)
Lead-in with haunting:
Theres always someone, haunting someone, haunting someone,
I cant sleep easy, cause Im afraid of dreaming
And then the memory of the dream
Theres always someone, haunting someone, haunting someone
Laura is the face in the misty night
Footsteps that you hear down the hall
The laugh that floats on a summers night
That you might never quite recall
And you see laura on a train that is passing through
Those eyes how familiar they seem
She gave your very first kiss to you
That was laura but shes only a dream
She gave your very first kiss to you
That was laura
But shes only a dream
Yes she gave your very first kiss to you
That was laura, but shes only a dream
A dream, a dream

I wrote most of the songs to Laura in airplanes and sent the lyrics from some airport to the studio. That's the reason why her album Laura has such an personal touch. Written over several years in different tempers.

Baby Let's Swing
Laura, i saw you open in la
There's something i gotta say
Laura, you know it's really been such a long, long time
And you know laura, i knew you'd make it good someday
And you knew it anyway
Laura, i know that maybe this is the wrong, wrong time
But laura where did that magic go
It's so hard, it's so cold down here
Did you have to leave me behind?
I wish that i could make it
But how i love to shuffle (how i love to shuffle)
Baby let's swing
Now i love to shuffle
Ever since i heard you sing (since i heard her sing)
Laura, i saw you in that magazine
You looked like a gypsy queen
Laura, i beat around the bush 'cause it's oh so hard
But you know laura, it's not the best it's ever been
I think you know what i mean
I wish you'd take a look in your own back yard
To see that someone has seen it all
Seen you climb, seen you fall so low
If you have to leave it behind
I'll carry it on for ya, 'cause it's oh so hard
Baby let's swing
Now i love to shuffle
Ever since i heard you sing

Be Ye In Love With April-Tide?
BE ye in love with April-tide?
I’ faith, in love am I!
For now ’t is sun, and now ’t is shower,
And now ’t is frost, and now ’t is flower,
And now ’t is Laura laughing-eyed,
And now ’t is Laura shy.
Ye doubtful days, O slower glide!
Still smile and frown, O sky!
Some beauty unforeseen I trace
In every change of Laura’s face:
Be ye in love with April-tide?
I’ faith, in love am I!

Dudn dudn dudn dudn, dudn dudn dudn dudn
The grain bag sits on the chair, and why the hell am I with ya?
And if you told me that it wasnt there, why the hell am I with ya?
You know I really dont care, and why the hell now with ya?
I told my mommy that it was ok, and why the hell now with ya?
Laura -- laura
Oh baby I cut myself
And if you threw the garbage away, why the hell am I with ya?
And if you knew you wanted to stay, then why the hell now with ya?
Little eddie dingle is going away, and why the hell now with ya?
Somebody wants to come and play, and why the hell am I with ya?

A Garden Of Girls
KATE is like a violet, Gertrude's like a rose,
Jane is like a gillyflower smart;
But Laura's like a lily, the purest bud that blows,
Whose white, white petals veil the golden heart.
Girls in the garden--one and two and three--
One for song and one for play and one--ah, one for me!
Gillyflowers and violets and roses fair and fine,
But only one a lily, and that one lily mine!
Bertha is a hollyhock, stately, tall, and fair,
Mabel has the daisy's dainty grace,
Edith has the gold of the sunflower on her hair,
But Laura wears the lily in her face.
Girls in the garden--five and six and seven--
Three to take, and three to give, but one--ah! one is given--
Hollyhocks and daisies, and sunflowers like the sun,
But only one a lily, and that one lily won.

A Bird...
the cockatoo
plays basketball
and then
Laura (and that is her
name)
is fed with white
grains
she turns 360 degrees
and shoots the
green ball
to the ring
the people clap
and Laura flies away
again to the hands
of its feeder

Love Elegy, to Laura
Too heedless friend, why thus augment the flame
That glows resistless in my beating breast?
Why with thy praises grace his fatal name,
Who robs thy Emma's hapless heart of rest?
Why needest thou dwell on Henry's graceful ease;
Why praise the timid worth his glance reveals;
Why speak enraptured of his power to please,
Whose power to wound my aching bosom feels?
Say not, "That gentle voice was formed for love,"
Nor in his eyes such sweet expression see;
Say not, that tenderness those glances prove,
Which never fix with tenderness on me.
Too well my Henry's charms I've numbered o'er,
And thus to end the fond survey is mine:
His heart will own some brighter fair one's power;
Think not, lost Emma, he can e'er be thine.
Yet why despair? Though Beauty's boasted rose
On others' cheeks in livelier colours shine,
The tender heart that in my bosom glows
The palm of fondness will to none resign.
Though brighter radiance beams in others' eyes,
By shape, by colour formed the soul to steal;
If Love's expression Henry's heart can prize,
Then, Henry's heart the power of mine must feel.
Yet vain the hope: "Fond maid, thy love suppress,"
Calm Reason cries; "go, learn to check the sigh:
But, if resolved to love in rash excess,
Seek out some lonely shade, despair, and die!"
Then, Laura, bid to Henry's praise farewel!
Forget his merit, and my hopeless flame;
On the dear theme no more ill-judging dwell,
And from thy memory blot his fatal name.
But if I urge this plaintive prayer in vain,
Bid execrations on that name attend;
And him, my Laura, view with cold disdain,
Who sees unmoved the sorrows of thy friend.
Say, such the scorn, the pride of Henry's breast,
It cannot Love's endearing softness share,
Say, vice degrades....Hold! slight my wild request,
Nor by such calumny my fury dare.
No....from my frantic wishes still appeal,
Declare that Henry is from error free;
Or the keen hate for him I bade thee feel,
My wayward heart will learn to feel for thee.

So they all went away from the little log house. The shutters were over the windows, so the little house could not see them go. It stayed there inside the log fence, behind the two big oak trees that in the summertime had made green roofs for Mary and Laura to play under.

E "Laura" aspetta un figlio per Natale
e tutto il resto adesso pu aspettare
perch Laura adesso deve
solamente riposare
e forse?!?.... smetter anche di fumare?!
E "laura" aspetta un figlio per Natale
ed sicura che ci
sar "neve...."
da quelle parti sai... non che
ci sia sempre il sole
per... non che neanche tutti
giorni "piove"!
E Laura aspetta un figlio per Natale
e tutto il resto adesso... pu aspettare
perch Laura adesso "deve"
solamente "riposare"
e forse.... smetter anche di fumare...
E laura aspetta un figlio per Natale
ed sicura che ci sar "neve"....
da quelle parti sai... non che
ci sia sempre il sole
per... non che neanche tutti
giorni "piove"!
E Laura aspetta un figlio "per errore"
per lei dice che si chiama "amore"
in ogni caso poi la gente...
sai che cosa vuole!?!
in fondo.... vuole "Natale con la neve"!
E Laura aspetta un figlio per Natale
e tutto il resto adesso pu aspettare
perch Laura adesso deve
solamente "riposare"
e forse.... smetter anche di fumare

To Laura
Cease, Laura, cease, suspect no more
This careless heart has learnt to love,
Because on yonder lonely shore
I still at pensive evening rove;
Because of Henry's worth I speak
With eager warmth and sparkling eye;
Because his favourite haunts I seek,
And still o'erjoyed to meet him fly:....
But, Laura, should my faltering tongue
Refuse to speak in Henry's praise,
My trembling voice deny the song
When Henry claims his favourite lays;
When Henry comes, should I neglect
With smiles the welcome youth to seek,
But meet him full of cold respect,
While conscious blushes paint my cheek;
Should I, when Ella shares his praise,
Heave deeply-drawn but smothered sighs,
And, when on me he deigns to gaze,
Fix on the earth my conscious eyes;....
Then, I'll no more thy charge deny,
No more thy tender fears reprove:
Then, Laura, heave compassion's sigh,
For mine will be the sigh of love.

A Vision upon the Fairy Queen
Methought I saw the grave where Laura lay,
Within that temple where the vestal flame
Was wont to burn; and, passing by that way,
To see that buried dust of living fame,
Whose tomb fair Love and fairer Virtue kept,
All suddenly I saw the Fairy Queen,
At whose approach the soul of Petrarch wept ;
And from thenceforth those graces were not seen,
For they this Queen attended; in whose stead
Oblivion laid him down on Laura's hearse.
Hereat the hardest stones were seen to bleed,
And groans of buried ghosts the heavens did pierce :
Where Homer's spright did tremble all for grief,
And cursed the access of that celestial thief.
