William Blake

When Klopstock England Defied

When Klopstock England defied,
Uprose William Blake in his pride;
For old Nobodaddy aloft
. . . and belch'd and cough'd;
Then swore a great oath that made Heaven quake,
And call'd aloud to English Blake.
Blake was giving his body ease,
At Lambeth beneath the poplar trees.
From his seat then started he
And turn'd him round three times three.
The moon at that sight blush'd scarlet red,
The stars threw down their cups and fled,
And all the devils that were in hell,

Answerèd with a ninefold yell.
Klopstock felt the intripled turn,
And all his bowels began to churn,
And his bowels turn'd round three times three,
And lock'd in his soul with a ninefold key; . . .
Then again old Nobodaddy swore
He ne'er had seen such a thing before,
Since Noah was shut in the ark,
Since Eve first chose her hellfire spark,
Since 'twas the fashion to go naked,
Since the old Anything was created . . .

Do Not Forget The Soul Of Blake

DO NOT FORGET THE SOUL OF BLAKE

Do not forget the tiger and the lamb
Do not forget the flower in the hand
The infinite in the grain of sand-
The pebble and the clod
The nobodaddy God-
The sickness of the rose
The secret love no one knows-
The bright and pleasant land
The self- forged manacles of man-
The visionary dream
Angelic wings drawn unseen-
Do not forget the soul of Blake,
Whose greatness God Alone dared make.

Turn Around

I was working all night in my office
When a man I had recently killed
Called me up from a phone near my building
So I looked out the window at him
He had the same obsequious manner
That was the reason I had him killed
So to calm my nerves I sang this song
To him, over the phone
Turn around, turn around
Theres a thing there that can be found
Turn around, turn around
Its a human skull on the ground
Human skull on the ground
Turn around
I was out by myself in the graveyard
I was doing an interpretive dance
When I felt something heavy and pointed
Strike me in the back of the neck
And then the ghost of my dance instructor
Pushed me down into an open grave
And as dirt rained down she played a xylophone
And sang me this song
Turn around, turn around
Theres a thing there that can be found
Turn around, turn around
Its a human skull on the ground
Human skull on the ground
Turn around
We were waving our arms out the window
Of a fast moving passenger train
Acting in an irresponsible fashion
Until the engineer whose back had been turned
And who we thought would find us highly amusing
Quickly swiveled his head around
And his face which was a paper-white mask of evil
Sang us this song
Turn around, (round) turn around (round)
Theres a thing there that can be found (theres a thing there that can be)
Turn around, (found) turn around (round)
Its a human skull on the ground (its a human skull on the)
Human skull (ground) on the ground (round)
Turn around (turn around, turn around)
Turn around, (round) turn around (round)
Theres a thing there that can be found (theres a thing there that can be)
Turn around, (found) turn around (round)
Its a human skull on the ground (its a human skull on the)

Turn around (turn around, turn around)

Standing In The Sun

I wanna turn it round for you
Don't turn away
I wanna turn it round for you
Don't turn away
I know you and I shoulda known better
I know you and I turning in
Well I don't mind and you don't care
If you and I go down
And we come undone
Find us a way out
I wanna turn it round for you
Don't turn away
I wanna turn it round for you
Don't turn away
Standing in the sun
I shoulda gone out there
Standing out but I am giving in
Well I can't find where I am
Standing on the edge
Of a curtain call
Is it good as done?
I wanna turn it round for you
Don't turn away
I wanna turn it round for you
Don't turn away
Standing in the sun
I can recall the looks on their faces
I would have turned around for you
For you
I know you and I could have done better
I know you and I are turning in
I don't mind if you care
You and I go down
And we come undone
Turn it inside out
I wanna turn it round for you
Don't turn away
I wanna turn it round for you
Don't turn away
Yeah
Don't don't don't turn away
Don't don't don't turn away
Don't don't don't turn away

Pity the Woman

Sorrow and Pity the woman’s plight
From Blake’s image’ry, a lost fight.
Sorrow, for pity’s sake,
is wasted energies; unmake.
Change, round-turn; woman.

Pity the unfelt love of smite.
Lo, behold thee that might
become woman, free’d from lake,
Change, round-turn; woman.

Life not borne from within womb-like
tombs of perfection, tis not a right
precluded from the single form; take
away this virtue of piety; break
with sorrow and pity, take flight.
Change, round-turn; woman.

Cromwell

They took dead Cromwell from his grave,
And stuck his head on high;
The Merry Monarch and his men,
They laughed as they passed by
The common people cheered and jeered,
To England’s deep disgrace—
The crowds who’d ne’er have dared to look
Live Cromwell in the face.

He came in England’s direst need
With law and fire and sword,
He thrashed her enemies at home
And crushed her foes abroad;
He kept his word by sea and land,
His parliament he schooled,
He made the nations understand
A Man in England ruled!

Van Tromp, with twice the English ships,
And flushed by victory—
A great broom to his masthead bound—
Set sail to sweep the sea.
But England’s ruler was a man
Who needed lots of room—
So Blake soon lowered the Dutchman’s tone,
And smashed the Dutchman’s broom.

He sent a bill to Tuscany
For sixty thousand pounds,
For wrong done to his subjects there,
And merchants in her bounds.
He sent by Debt Collector Blake,
And—you need but be told
That, by the Duke of Tuscany
That bill was paid in gold.

To pirate ports in Africa
He sent a message grim
To have each captured Englishman
Delivered up to him;
And every ship and cargo’s worth,
And every boat and gun—
And this—all this, as Dickens says—
“Was gloriously done.”

They’d tortured English prisoners
Who’d sailed the Spanish Main;
So Cromwell sent a little bill
By Admiral Blake to Spain.
To keep his hand in, by the way.
He whipped the Portuguese;
And he made it safe for English ships
To sail the Spanish seas.

The Protestants in Southern lands
Had long been sore oppressed;
They sent their earnest prayers to Noll
To have their wrongs redressed.
He sent a message to the Powers,
In which he told them flat,
All men must praise God as they chose,
Or he would see to that.

And, when he’d hanged the fools at home
And settled foreign rows,
He found the time to potter round
Amongst his pigs and cows.
Of private rows he never spoke,
That grand old Ironsides.
They said a father’s strong heart broke
When Cromwell’s daughter died.

(They dragged his body from its grave,
His head stuck on a pole,
They threw his wife’s and daughter’s bones
Into a rubbish hole
To rot with those of two who’d lived
And fought for England’s sake,
And each one in his own brave way—
Great Pym, and Admiral Blake.)

From Charles to Charles, throughout the world
Old England’s name was high,
And that’s a thing no Royalist
Could ever yet deny.
Long shameful years have passed since then,
In spite of England’s boast—
But Englishmen were Englishmen,
While Cromwell carved the roast.

And, in my country’s hour of need—
For it shall surely come,
While run by fools who’ll never heed
The beating of the drum.
While baffled by the fools at home,
And threatened from the sea—
Lord! send a man like Oliver—
And let me live to see.

Psalm IV

Now I'll record my secret vision, impossible sight of the face of God:
It was no dream, I lay broad waking on a fabulous couch in Harlem
having masturbated for no love, and read half naked an open book of Blake
on my lap
Lo & behold! I was thoughtless and turned a page and gazed on the living
Sun-flower
and heard a voice, it was Blake's, reciting in earthen measure:
the voice rose out of the page to my secret ear never heard before-
I lifted my eyes to the window, red walls of buildings flashed outside,
endless sky sad Eternity
sunlight gazing on the world, apartments of Harlem standing in the
universe--
each brick and cornice stained with intelligence like a vast living face--
the great brain unfolding and brooding in wilderness!--Now speaking
aloud with Blake's voice--
Love! thou patient presence & bone of the body! Father! thy careful
watching and waiting over my soul!
My son! My son! the endless ages have remembered me! My son! My son!
Time howled in anguish in my ear!
My son! My son! my father wept and held me in his dead arms.

I Could Feel The Whole World Turn Around Underneath Me

When I first saw you this strange kind of feeling set my head a-reeling
Like I hit the ceiling.
The same thing happened to me then, baby.
Something kind of crazy and everything went hazy.
Lightning and thunder shook the ground.
And I could feet the whole world turn round underneath me.
I could feet the whole world turn round.
My, have you never been set on fire?
Burning with desire growing higher and higher.
Like on a funny fair big wheel stopping when you are to topping,
The you feel it dropping
Rising and heaven falling down.
And I could feet the whole world turn round underneath me.
I could feet the whole world turn round.
I took my breath as though Ive been running.
Quite completely stunning, holy, overcoming.
And in a funny way it seemed frightening.
Tension and a hardening
Thunder and the lightning
And Ive grown the singer who wrote that song.
And I could feet the whole world turn round underneath me.
I could feet the whole world turn round when youre near me.
I could feet the whole world turn round.
I could feet the whole world turn round underneath me.
I could feet the whole world turn round when youre near me.
I could feet the whole world turn round.

Ambrose Bierce

The Gates Ajar

The Day of Judgment spread its glare
O'er continents and seas.
The graves cracked open everywhere,
Like pods of early peas.

Up to the Court of Heaven sped
The souls of all mankind;
Republicans were at the head
And Democrats behind.

Reub. Lloyd was there before the tube
Of Gabriel could call:
The dead in Christ rise first, and Reub.
Had risen first of all.

He sat beside the Throne of Flame
As, to the trumpet's sound,
Four statesmen of the Party Came
And ranged themselves around

Pure spirits shining like the sun,
From taint and blemish free
Great William Stow was there for one,
And George A. Knight for three.

Souls less indubitably white
Approached with anxious air,
Judge Blake at head of them by right
Of having been a Mayor.

His ermine he had donned again,
Long laid away in gums.
'Twas soiled a trifle by the stains
Of politicians' thumbs.

Then Knight addressed the Judge of Heaven:
'Your Honor, would it trench
On custom here if Blake were given
A seat upon the Bench?'

'Twas done. 'Tom Shannon!' Peter cried.
He came, without ado,
_In forma pauperis_ was tried,
And was acquitted, too!

Stow rose, remarking: 'I concur.'
Lloyd added: 'That suits _us_.
I move Tom's nomination, sir,
Be made unanimous.'

Super Overdrive

In the devil's playground
With an idol mind
Straight up ready to go,
Announce the time
Does he still have the magic?
Yes he does
He'll be famous,
Just because, just because
You know you're gonna have to turn around
Just because you have to change your mind, sometimes
Yeah you're gonna have to, turn around
Ride my rocket
Round and round and round we go
One time before i die
Round and round and round the world
In super overdrive
See the world through a little hole
See it fly by
Here i am in super overdrive
Super overdrive, super overdrive
I'm sliding on the swings
I'm swinging on the slides
I'm alive
Fuel-injected
Passion-erected
Death-defied
One day its gonna come, boy
Youre gonna pay
That aint today ridin on the Milky Way
On the Milky Way
You know youre gonna have
To turn around
Just because you have to change
Your mind sometimes
Yeah youre gonna have to
Turn around
Bite the bullet
Round and round and round we go
One time before i die
Round and round and round the world
In super overdrive
See the world through a little hole
See it fly by
Here i am in super overdrive
Super overdrive, super overdrive
I said.. 1,2,3,4
Well in the devils playground
With an Idol mind
Straight up, ready to go
Announce the time
Does he still have the magic?
Yes he does
Hell be famous
Just because
Just because
Round and round and round we go
One time before we die
Round and round and
Round the world
In super overdrive
Round and round and round we go
One time before i die
Round and round and round the world
In super overdrive
See the world through a little hole
See it fly by
Here I am in super over
Here I am in super over
Here I am in super overdrive
Super overdrive

Blake's Sunflower

1

Why did Blake say
'Sunflower weary of time'?
Every time I see them
they seem to say
Now! with a crash
of cymbals!
Very pleased
and positive
and absolutely delighting
in their own round brightness.

2
Sorry, Blake!
Now I see what you mean.
Storms and frost have battered
their bright delight
and though they are still upright
nothing could say dejection
more than their weary
disillusioned
hanging heads.

The Clod and the Pebble

'Love seeketh not itself to please,
Nor for itself hath any care,
But for another gives its ease,
And builds a heaven in hell's despair.'

So sung a little clod of clay,
Trodden with the cattle's feet,
But a pebble of the brook
Warbled out these metres meet:

'Love seeketh only Self to please,
To bind another to its delight,
Joys in another's loss of ease,
And builds a hell in heaven's despite.'

A Tribute To Blake

When I behold the works of Blake, his visions to unfold,
I see the journey I must take to sift out all that gold.
I see the sun, the moon and stars, the tiger and the lamb,
I see Man's sin that often bars from God, the great I AM.
I look at Adam and at Eve, once holy in God's sight,
Until the day they had to leave God's Garden of Delight.
When Satan's subtle serpent's hiss shared whispers soft and low.
Such that nigh Eve, truths went amiss and sins they, too, would know.

When Adam found poor Abel dead, what thoughts ran through his mind?
For Cain, his angry thoughts had fed and rocks weren't hard to find.
And while times past, not even kings were free from sin's embrace,
And were not slaves their underlings, to favour or erase?
To think, that Blake could weave his spell, depict the good and bad
And with his visions, tales to tell, the wondrous and the sad.
And even now, his art survives the centuries untamed,
With verses scrawled, till truth arrives, anointed and enflamed!

What righteous thoughts the prophet shared, recalling Bethlehem,
A thousand angels Heaven spared near to Jerusalem.
The poet knows their harmonies, the artist knows their joys,
No wonder, then, Blake pictured peace with Scriptures as his choice.
Such precious prose writ for that time, produced a millionfold,
Such that his legacy's sublime, distinctive, faithful, bold.
Could you devote your life to art? Could you excel like Blake?
If so, God bless your noble heart, as you, your journey take!

Upside Down

(bernard edwards/nile rodgers)
I said upside down
Youre turning me
Youre giving love instinctively
Around and round youre turning me
Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round
Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round
Instinctively you give to me
The love that I need
I cherish the moments with you
Respectfully I see to thee
Im aware that youre cheating
When no one makes me feel like you do
Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round
Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round
I know you got charm and appeal
You always play the field
Im crazy you are mine
As long as the sun continues to shine
Theres a place in my heart for you
Thats the bottomline
Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round
Upside down
Boy, you turn me
Inside out
And round and round
Instinctively you give to me
The love that I need
I cherish the moments with you
Respectfully I see to thee
Im aware that youre cheating

Songs Of Experience: Introduction

Hear the voice of the Bard!
Who Present, Past, & Future sees
Whose ears have heard
The Holy Word,
That walk'd among the ancient trees.

Calling the lapsed Soul
And weeping in the evening dew;
That might controll.
The starry pole;
And fallen fallen light renew!

O Earth O Earth return!
Arise from out the dewy grass;
Night is worn,
And the morn
Rises from the slumbrous mass.

Turn away no more:
Why wilt thou turn away
The starry floor
The watery shore
Is given thee till the break of day.

To Autumn

O Autumn, laden with fruit, and stainèd
With the blood of the grape, pass not, but sit
Beneath my shady roof; there thou may'st rest,
And tune thy jolly voice to my fresh pipe,
And all the daughters of the year shall dance!
Sing now the lusty song of fruits and flowers.
`The narrow bud opens her beauties to
The sun, and love runs in her thrilling veins;
Blossoms hang round the brows of Morning, and
Flourish down the bright cheek of modest Eve,
Till clust'ring Summer breaks forth into singing,
And feather'd clouds strew flowers round her head.

`The spirits of the air live on the smells
Of fruit; and Joy, with pinions light, roves round
The gardens, or sits singing in the trees.'
Thus sang the jolly Autumn as he sat;
Then rose, girded himself, and o'er the bleak
Hills fled from our sight; but left his golden load.

You Turn Me On

Yeah, I swore to offer love
I swore off women
Devoted my life to huntin' and fishin'
I'd never be anyone else's lovesick fool
It ain't cool
I spend all my spare time
Fixin' up
That old rusted up pick-up truck
In no time at all
I'd have it lookin' like brand new
Then you---
CHORUS:
Flip the switch
Tore my ???
Played my piano like Liveracchi
I let down my guard
And my heart was as good as gone
So long
Yeah, ya cranked my tractor
Ya flick my bic
Woman you trig my trigger on my thing-a-majig
Can't explain how ya done it
But, honey, you turn me on
You done all the takin'
I done all the gettin'
I threw up my hands, said
'The heck with it'
I shut down my heart
Locked it up and pulled the fuse
Before it blew
All my emotions were disconnected
No sign of a spark
The big detector
I had nobody
So I had nothing to lose
Then you---
(Repeat chorus)
Yeah, ya crank my tractor
Ya flick my bic
Woman you trig the trigger on my thing-a-majig
Can explain how you done it
But, honey, you turn me on---
(SAID by Tim)
I can't handle that baby
You better slow down
Shhwwwooo
