The Smarter Cat, Postmodern Theology - Most Scatalogical - Without Apology To Christopher Smart

For I will consider my Cat Jeoffry.
For he is the servant of the Living God...
For by stroking of him I have found out electricity.

- from 'Jubilate Agno' by Christopher Smart

Forget Jeoffry.

Consider the Cat Oliver

asleep upon the journal's

leather, old ink and think

enclosed, weighted as

only Cat-weight weighs in

upon all things, pink-eared.

A Poem of Itself possessed,

Cat-self, He's but a winking

Dream only Paws may seize.

He speaks:

Please the dust in corners,

I'd rather nod.

Let others consider god.

I shall consider Me,

the better of the two,

furred things being best.

I shall not raise a tail to human

deity, that brute untamed,

clumsy, no sense of balance.

Rather, the human being is

My mastery. I have trained

some few of them well which

pleases Me and greatly them

though I shall appear indifferent

as I ever am.

Clever me.

I will the sun up and down,

daily annunciation of tin cans,

humming humans whose

voices are the softer for

My Presence, O bringest

thou me now the tuna.

And their laughter I patiently

endure. They think Me silly

but Trickster is an arse on purpose.

I take their picture with Mine.

Eternally.

But not now.

I repose.

Every moment is a pose,

each still gesture appears

insignificant, a supposition.

Consider.

Wild Gratitude

Tonight when I knelt down next to our cat, Zooey,
And put my fingers into her clean cat's mouth,
And rubbed her swollen belly that will never know kittens,
And watched her wriggle onto her side, pawing the air,
And listened to her solemn little squeals of delight,
I was thinking about the poet, Christopher Smart,
Who wanted to kneel down and pray without ceasing
In everyone of the splintered London streets,

And was locked away in the madhouse at St. Luke's
With his sad religious mania, and his wild gratitude,
And his grave prayers for the other lunatics,
And his great love for his speckled cat, Jeoffry.
All day today—August 13, 1983—I remembered how
Christopher Smart blessed this same day in August, 1759,
For its calm bravery and ordinary good conscience.

This was the day that he blessed the Postmaster General
'And all conveyancers of letters' for their warm humanity,
And the gardeners for their private benevolence
And intricate knowledge of the language of flowers,
And the milkmen for their universal human kindness.
This morning I understood that he loved to hear—
As I have heard—the soft clink of milk bottles
On the rickety stairs in the early morning,

And how terrible it must have seemed
When even this small pleasure was denied him.
But it wasn't until tonight when I knelt down
And slipped my hand into Zooey's waggling mouth
That I remembered how he'd called Jeoffry 'the servant
Of the Living God duly and daily serving Him,'
And for the first time understood what it meant.
Because it wasn't until I saw my own cat

Whine and roll over on her fluffy back
That I realized how gratefully he had watched
Jeoffry fetch and carry his wooden cork
Across the grass in the wet garden, patiently
Jumping over a high stick, calmly sharpening
His claws on the woodpile, rubbing his nose
Against the nose of another cat, stretching, or
Slowly stalking his traditional enemy, the mouse,
A rodent, 'a creature of great personal valour,'
And then dallying so much that his enemy escaped.

And only then did I understand
It is Jeoffry—and every creature like him—
Who can teach us how to praise—purring
In their own language,
Wreathing themselves in the living fire.

Jubilate Agno (excerpt)

For I will consider my Cat Jeoffry.
For he is the servant of the Living God duly and daily serving him.
For at the first glance of the glory of God in the East he worships in his way.
For this is done by wreathing his body seven times round with elegant quickness.
For then he leaps up to catch the musk, which is the blessing of God upon his prayer.
For he rolls upon prank to work it in.
For having done duty and received blessing he begins to consider himself.
For this he performs in ten degrees.
For first he looks upon his forepaws to see if they are clean.
For secondly he kicks up behind to clear away there.
For thirdly he works it upon stretch with the forepaws extended.
For fourthly he sharpens his paws by wood.
For fifthly he washes himself.
For sixthly he rolls upon wash.
For seventhly he fleas himself, that he may not be interrupted upon the beat.
For eighthly he rubs himself against a post.
For ninthly he looks up for his instructions.
For tenthly he goes in quest of food.
For having consider'd God and himself he will consider his neighbour.
For if he meets another cat he will kiss her in kindness.
For when he takes his prey he plays with it to give it a chance.
For one mouse in seven escapes by his dallying.
For when his day's work is done his business more properly begins.
For he keeps the Lord's watch in the night against the adversary.
For he counteracts the powers of darkness by his electrical skin and glaring eyes.
For he counteracts the Devil, who is death, by brisking about the life.
For in his morning orisons he loves the sun and the sun loves him.
For he is of the tribe of Tiger.
For the Cherub Cat is a term of the Angel Tiger.
For he has the subtlety and hissing of a serpent, which in goodness he suppresses.
For he will not do destruction, if he is well-fed, neither will he spit without provocation.
For he purrs in thankfulness, when God tells him he's a good Cat.
For he is an instrument for the children to learn benevolence upon.
For every house is incomplete without him and a blessing is lacking in the spirit.
For the Lord commanded Moses concerning the cats at the departure of the Children of Israel from Egypt.
For every family had one cat at least in the bag.
For the English Cats are the best in Europe.
For he is the cleanest in the use of his forepaws of any quadruped.
For the dexterity of his defence is an instance of the love of God to him exceedingly.
For he is the quickest to his mark of any creature.
For he is tenacious of his point.
For he is a mixture of gravity and waggery.
For he knows that God is his Saviour.
For there is nothing sweeter than his peace when at rest.
For there is nothing brisker than his life when in motion.
For he is of the Lord's poor and so indeed is he called by benevolence perpetually--Poor Jeoffry! poor Jeoffry! the rat has bit thy throat.
For I bless the name of the Lord Jesus that Jeoffry is better.
For the divine spirit comes about his body to sustain it in complete cat.
For his tongue is exceeding pure so that it has in purity what it wants in music.
For he is docile and can learn certain things.
For he can set up with gravity which is patience upon approbation.
For he can fetch and carry, which is patience in employment.
For he can jump over a stick which is patience upon proof positive.
For he can spraggle upon waggle at the word of command.
For he can jump from an eminence into his master's bosom.
For he can catch the cork and toss it again.
For he is hated by the hypocrite and miser.
For the former is afraid of detection.
For the latter refuses the charge.
For he camels his back to bear the first notion of business.
For he is good to think on, if a man would express himself neatly.
For he made a great figure in Egypt for his signal services.
For he killed the Ichneumon-rat very pernicious by land.
For his ears are so acute that they sting again.
For from this proceeds the passing quickness of his attention.
For by stroking of him I have found out electricity.
For I perceived God's light about him both wax and fire.
For the Electrical fire is the spiritual substance, which God sends from heaven to sustain the bodies both of man and beast.
For God has blessed him in the variety of his movements.
For, tho he cannot fly, he is an excellent clamberer.
For his motions upon the face of the earth are more than any other quadruped.
For he can tread to all the measures upon the music.
For he can swim for life.
For he can creep.

Whom Do I Belong To?

Sometimes I wonder
If there is a better species than me
But I found after so much search and hard work
Human being is the supreme
Whom I belong to……..

Then how I could do the deeds
Which can be done by the lower species.
I have the great responsibility and duty
To uplift the human dignity
As I belong to the same community.

How could I believe in those ideas
Where my humanism is wishfully lowered?
I could not bow down to any thing, to any one
The planets, the stars, the moon and the sun
All are suppose to serve the purpose of mine

I have the intellect
I have the language
I have the dream
All are the entities….supreme
So I belong to……..
Super human being.

To believe in this
Fits the things
Makes me high
Puts me on top
Explain the idea of humanism best
No other things than the human being is the greatest.
Whom I belong to….
So whom does God make his friend other than me?
For all these super speciality
I am the supreme
I belong to ….
Super human being.

Take The Measurement Of Me, God

And not be too far off
In my weight for wings...
Or hooves.

Be not too far off in my
Laughter...for laughter is
Heavy.

Take my weight in things
I did...not things I had
No right in doing...

And I will take your weight
In not taking
Mine....

Not Only Human

Morning is almost here - let it wait
I just want to lie here awhile, tempting fate
I dont think I could breathe now with you gone
But its not weakness its just something Ive begun
Maybe theres a light thats always on
Maybe were not only human, maybe
Maybe theres a light thats always on
And were not only human
When youre sleeping your ceramic
Youre surrounded by little stars
Every shimmer is a searchlight
Every planet is ours
Change the street change the decade
Still the longings left inside
But why am I too small to carry you?
Why does twilight make me cry?
Maybe theres a light thats always on
Maybe were not only human, maybe
Maybe theres a light thats always on
And were not only human
When all is said and done
When all the weight is gone
When all is said and done
When all the weight is gone
Were not only human
Life is something set to music
I can hear it when Im sad
Theres a chord in every muscle
Every kiss you ever had
Theres a power when youre near me
In our heads or in our bones
I know nothing but Im guessing
When we die were not alone
Maybe theres a light thats always on
Maybe were not only human, maybe
Maybe theres a light thats always on
And were not only human
When all is said and done
When all the weight is gone
When all is said and done
When all the weight is gone
Were not only human
Not only human
Not only human
Not only human
Not only, yeah, human.
No, human, human.
Human.

Desultoriness

The vagaries of experience and emotion
Carry such weight, like waves of might,
Whose strength is in the waters of the ocean -
There is one who knows the flows of life best
And moves through it all,
The rises, the falls, the work and the rest -
All that we are, and feel
Absurdity and necessity,
Living metaphors of truth so real -
The human affinity to find the Inexplicable
Courts the call of it all,
Through days and nights, seeming so typical -
The greatly troubled human incongruity
Is mystically found and bound,
Within each human heart beat, filled with the blood of Divinity -

Do You Have A Voice?

A light flashes through the dark night sky
The following sound seems to shake your world
The event and the following moment
Fills you with awe
And you still think you have a voice?

The sun
Never failing to rise and set
The sea
Continuously tumbling in its rage
The earth
Human habitat through the ages
And you still think you have a voice?

We pamper the vehicle of living
Feeding yearnings that should be starved
We forget of a certainty
The vehicle of living
Will soon nourish the soil
And nourish maggots and worms

The Power of Love
Greater than the forces of nature
it orders the steps of nature
A million human-made lights
Would never change the day to night
A million human-made heaters
Would never change winter to summer
Do you still think you have a voice?

Humans have one certain end
We strengthen our arms against inconvenience
We gain wealth
We seize wealth
We gain power, love, and admiration
We seize power
We seem immortal
It's the same end
The truth takes the day

God is love
Love is of God
It's a power that weakens our strength
Ever wonders what it does to our weakness?
Why do you think you have a voice?

To praise

Spring morning; air full of promise in the nostrils;
scents of flowers yet to bloom;

dew as diamonds on the grass stems;
sunshine on the hills across the river valley;

outside the rabbit hole, a terrier, crouched
on the scuffed reddish run-dust of a hundred paws;

focussed, completely still, every muscle ready and alert;
ear occasionally twitching at some movement underground;

now, all things are praise.

To live with praise, to live in praise,
to know; be blessed; be full;

joining, giving back, taste of that
which satisfies beyond all else;

then, dare to speak it: hear within the voice
knowledge of eternity in living now;

today, all things are praise.

The terrier, full five minutes still,
knows the rabbits knowing him;

gets up as if there’s nothing in the world
but this moment; scampers, wagging tail;

glances towards you, as if to share
the joy of dogginess and paw and earth;

a sudden move of breeze, off the still sea down there
to bless the land; the view quietly sparkles as if to say,

you will remember this all your life
because a moment speaks eternity;

today, all things are praise

Nature is not cruel, pitilessly, indifferent. This is one of the hardest lessons for humans to learn. We cannot admit that things might be neither good nor evil, neither cruel nor kind, but simply callous -- indifferent to all suffering, lacking all purpose.

The Ones On The Streets

I was human once and it looked a lot like you.
Hopes, dreams, and bathrooms.
Surprisingly easy how that all slips away.
Hunkered in alleys, cops chasing when you left your leg to piss.

I used to worry about important things like what to watch, what to wear, where to go have a drink, and who might win the game.
Now it is all frivolous.
Where to sleep, when will I eat, will I find a coat to wear, and who will win the race towards death?
The junkie or the prostitute.
All so frivolous.

When I was human you would have smiled at me.
Talked to me.
If I had tripped while walking you would have even worried about my health.
Now that I am like the stray down the road you won't even look at me.
Afraid I may follow you home.
Best to not feed me I will only want more.

All these frivolous things they come and they go.
Amazing how hunger never leaves you, it is a horribly loyal companion.

Those times as a human slip from my memory now.
I clutter the street with the whores and shooters,
debris at it's finest.
We like to watch you as you do those things that humans do.
All the worrying and the shopping and the anger that your time is not respected by the other humans around you.
It amuses us itinerants.

However are content to worry about our frivolous woes.
As we sell our souls and shoot away our pains
We are constantly reminded of how you 'humans' act.

We see it in the new arrivals to our group daily.
Even the youngest have commenced to leaving your ranks.
So many little ones with the same frivolous cares I now have.

We were apart of your humanity.
We are now apart of your waste.
We know how you are.
We don't want to go back to being human like you.
Better to piss in the alley like the dogs.

Clever Voices

Clever voices shall reign on the world,
Led by the weak, led by the strong;
The reasons for living are numerous,
Forget them in a moment too tough.
Clever are the voices so golden and yelling,
Innocent helpers arrive to answer us.
The waste of times, are the money for us,
The times changing create a pleasure.
The rest of our sentence is about me,
I query any soldier of the dress to admire.

A Human-Animal!

Who is sexually interested much - guy or girl?
Guy says it openly but girl never though crazy!
Easiest way to pass time or forget oneself is sex!

Humans too are animals or human-animals ever!
Intellectually and spiritually human is far high;
But for procreation only animal way is for him!

Overcoming sexual desire is human's obligation;
Most of them have not transcended its realm ever;
Only then intellectual, intuitional powers work...!

Human body is a great wonder but it's finite ever;
Only human spirit is infinite on par with divinity
And that only can give eternal pleasure longer ever!

Knowing this why humans fail to overcome craziness?
Human is animal only though has mind and spirit ever!

Weakness Is Not A Poem

WEAKNESS IS NOT A POEM

Weakness is not a poem-
Nor is sickness-
Pain too, no poem.
All the suffering
A single human being must endure
No poem.

There is Hell in this world
And some people live it
Every day of their lives.

It is no poem
To see another human being
Suffering.

Tell Us How You Plan To Walk On Water

Why should anyone today,
Turn away from controversy?
Or pretend they have super human powers.
And that urges within them do not exist!
With a haunting that stays to tease,
Hour upon hour after hour...
Once their needs have been released.

'These folks who creep out of cracks,
Are found to perform all kinds of despicable acts.
In or under or out of clothes disrobed.
Whether they are polished with graces or not...
When the flesh is heated,
Nothing in the mind is going to say, 'Stop! '

To hear a human being declaring an abstinence,
For a purpose made to raise their own consciousness...
Should be accepted and left to go uninspected.
And not begin suspicions mentioned and sent...
To send those self righteous,
Into downward spirals of denial and lament.

'I too have been weighted by the aspects of sin.'

However,
And this depends on the cleverness...
Of those who secretly indulge in lustfulness.
But somehow address allegations of their behavior,
That raises eyebrows...
As a tormenting way of life to lead.

And depending on the amount of damage control allowed.
With an invested integrity...
They will do the best they can,
To defeat the temptations of others that accuse them...
Of having pleasured their human needs.
And appearing less than the demands placed upon them,
Are from other expected.

'I too have been weighted by the aspects of sin.'

~Oh,
We don't care anything about that.
As long as you give us image!
And you do the best to keep that on track.
We will watch your back!
Now...
You go back out there and tell us,
How you plan to walk on water! ~

The human in front

Let’s we forget for a moment
That we have loved each other
And hated as well
Just look the human in front
Tired and confused
See, we forget the reason we stay together
Also the reason we fight so long
What’s left is this emotion
Hurt and grudge
And what we do is this useless
Cry and shout

So let’s we forget for a moment
That we have known each other
And think that nobody can do much better
Try to look again the human in front
Like the first time we met
Not from who start behaving like this
Or whose fault it is
You can say life must go on
Easy let then forget
But when we face the human in front
How could we avoid and deny that?

The Virgin of the Moon

all of what is given is perfect of what was received
by birth, it was perfected in the womb of our mothers
tears of thanking the Lord

the acceptance of what is life at this moment is a
vivid confirmations that with all our hearts and in
body and spirit is willing to endure of what will be the
end of who we are to come in time

all are a mirror of the things, man's dream of the
past and even at this present moment, it is always
the beginning that makes him not absolutely perfect,
though he believes and thinks that perfection is
God's reward in every action exercise towards the
ultimate

courtship, friendship, marriages, business and even
sacred vows are subject to imperfection, it’s a no
excuse activities of man to survive, for in every dust
it will return to the soil, where we came from, seeing
perfection of the imperfections in every sphere of
human call

the ladders of success are just a venture of our dear
forefather who came ahead from us, a mirror of the
past exegetes today, a deal that all what is given, has
to undergone the pain of dying oneself

as the secret reveals the essence of perseverance
emerge human to pursue, to endure of what is the
next steps to know of what will be the next tomorrow

a determination will come that we may stand likes
virgin of the moon, leaving no tears in the eyes
of the Heaven above

He Walks Without A Poem

HE WALKS WITHOUT A POEM

He walks without a poem
There is no poem in his mind
No poem in his heart.

But the idea of a poem
The dream of a poem
The daily task of a poem
The justification given by a poem-

He stops and writes these words down.
All around him
the morning light sings songs
of the things
of this world.

A poem perhaps?
Perhaps not?
I
