In my ribcage, in its chambers,
My heart will try to remember
A subterranean something—
An almost alien feeling—
I thought I'd forgotten for sure.
The warmth I've wanted to capture
Is a slow flickering ember
Lost in my cool rain's concealing—

Reptilian Brain
Rebuild my spine, vertebrae by vertebrae,
and cover my nervous tissue,
and protect the lines that trace
the impulses that shoot from my back
into my fingers and toes and wherever
else I might sometimes feel.
Restructure my ribcage, make the marrows
capitulate and bend to the subterranean
dwellings that harbor something that
seems almost alien to me—
that seems like the graffiti stains
of a loitering soul.
Then break my skull against the concrete slabs
that support my laying body,
limp with the lethargic weight
of atrophied instinct and muted desire—
the tenuous plaits of the aphotic mind,
drenched in its abyss of unsunken light.
Force my jaw to unfurl in the waking night,
my cranium shattering the superego
as the cold blood runs deep from
my reptilian brain to boil
where I've forgotten to bask.

Unsettled
An unsettled body rests on an unsettled sea,
Staring always upward through the cloudy gauze
OF white, foggy eyes. The body sways, slowly
Deteriorating in the sun; slowly soaking in the salt,
Crisping up as it shribbles—drenched and water-logged.
A single rib in the curving ribcage is split,
Puncturing inward, a small red pool shading
The ocean like the minute hand of a sundial,
Like magnetic pulls on the arrow of a compass.
Carrion rots, but this is flesh preserved
In the saunter of its myth, its iniquity
Of half-destroyed instruments and lost cargoes,
Damaged sails that've lost their luster, their color
In the glow of the sun. The westward wind carries over.

Tandem Hearts
There is a heart that is both yours and mine,
Its beat is always in sync and in time,
It silently knows what is best,
As it thumps loudly in your chest,
It never grows or quietens with age,
Yet it always rattles your ribcage,
It beats once, then twice, then thrice,
Entrapped within your bodily vice,
But in vigour, spirit and glee,
It is always in time with me.
So our hearts are in tandem,
The beats never sporadic or random,
For you have a special magic touch,

Inward Burning Fire
It's a dark path now - I don't know where it leads.
I only know you're not on it.
Insufficient light comes from the flame in my heart.
The fire you started.
This flame rages seeking fuel to burn and survive.
Give me some coal dust from your hair.
Just some green driftwood shavings from your eyes.
Your oaken wood hands warming mine - they're so cold now.
Better yet, an answering warmth
from the fire burning in your heart for mine.
Nothing serves to heal a dying flame as that meeting would.
But that's my fire seeking what will not be found on this path.
So, the flame turns inward to die out.
I hide the smoke.
It was always enough for you alone to know of this kindling within.
In the flame's death it must be secret still.
The fire consumes internally,
seeking out each memory hidden away.
Consuming every thought I ever had of you.
No one knows the fire's rage
until it turns to them and touches.
It will burn on inward
until it has devoured every memory, every feeling
with sustenance left in it.
It's a painful death,
but once the fire exists
it can only consume until it dies.
I know this science. I accept.
I accepted long ago.
The fire is so warm when first kindled.
Soon, I hope and fear,
only ash will be left.
The pain will be over.
I know I'll be cold but I'll rest.
As for now, while it's still burning,
I will make one vow.
I will save one tiny ember.
I will try to keep it warm and safe.
Just in case the path turns - and there you are.
And if a spark still remains within you too
this dear and dreaded fire can rise again.
Though more likely I know -
my little ember will serve only to remind me what warmth was
and burn my fingers.

Rain-days are funny

The sky assumes

Streaks of lightning

Nine Pound Sledge
With the kinetic force of a nine pound sledge
she strikes my chest. This sudden blow from nowhere
against my protective ribcage
fractures my thought processes.
It drives innocent nails into the palms of my love
puncturing my heart with splintered chords of hate.
The striated muscles of my limbs go soft; embarrassed,
they become limp, emasculated,
a pathetic atrophied excuse of a man.
Pierced and shocked by this unpleasant surprise
I experience a prolapse and begin to bleed.
My chest heaves in silent opposition
to this forced regurgitation,
and I protest
the vitriole of her ambush.
Deaf to my plea she puts the sledge down
and picks up a Stryker saw,
a saw designed to cut through bone
with minimal damage to the underlying soft tissue.
She mercifully opens me
splitting the wishbone into two unequal parts
with the dexterity of a graduate in residence.
She sees, of course, that i have hemorrhaged.
So she siphons off the blood
then casually removes my will to live
with a rusty clawhammer. Smiling ear to ear
and with innocent blood on her hands and lips
she nonchalantly walks away
dragging her nine pound sledge with her.
