Unwanted Gift.
Carmody said
what did you get
your old man
for his birthday?
well
you said
my sister and I
saved up
what money we could
siphoned off
some of our pocket money
took back
the empty beer bottles
to the off licence
did extra chores
for our mother
and went bought him
some cigarettes
and gave them to him
what did he say?
Carmody asked
said he didn't smoke
that kind
said they made
his throat sore
that was what he said?
yes and my sister
was upset of course
and went off
to her room to cry
but I just said
but it's the thought
that counts
and we just thought
you'd smoke the cigarettes
look ok thanks
for the thought
the old man said
and took the packet
and stuffed them
in his pocket
and read
the birthday card
we'd both written him
and put it on the table
and said
how much did you get
on the empty bottles?
so I told him
and he said
they were my bottles
I ought to
have had the money
for them kid
you have
I told him
In the form
of the cigarettes
what did he say
about that?
Carmody asked
he just stared
and took the cigarettes
out and opened them up
and lit one
and inhaled
and coughed
and I thought
good job too
and walked away
and Carmody
nodded his head
and sniggered
and you went off
with him to kick
around the ball
in the playground
at school
and said nothing
much more at all.

Shearing With a Hoe
The track that led to Carmody's is choked and overgrown,
The suckers of the stringybark have made the place their own;
The mountain rains have cut the track that once we used to know
When first we rode to Carmody's, a score of years ago.
The shearing shed at Carmody's was slab and stringybark,
The press was just a lever beam, invented in the Ark;
But Mrs Carmody was cook -- and shearers' hearts would glow
With praise of grub at Carmody's, a score of years ago.
At shearing time no penners-up would curse their fate and weep,
For Fragrant Fred -- the billy-goat -- was trained to lead the sheep;
And racing down the rattling chutes the bleating mob would go
Behind their horned man from Cook's, a score of years ago.
An owner of the olden time, his patriarchal shed
Was innocent of all machines or gadgets overhead:
And pieces, locks and super-fleece together used to go
To fill the bales at Carmody's, a score of years ago.
A ringer from the western sheds, whose fame was wide and deep,
Was asked to take a vacant pen and shear a thousand sheep.
"Of course, we've only got the blades!" "Well, what I want to know:
Why don't you get a bloke to take it off 'em with a hoe?"

Helen and You and a Bag of Chips
After school
after tea
of bread and jam
a mug of tea
and a slice of cake
you met Helen
under the railway bridge
in Rockingham Street
and she was holding
Battered Betty her doll
in her arms
and she said
Betty wanted to come
she gets lonely
stuck at home
ok
you said
as long as she's quiet
and doesn't cry
all the time
she won't
Helen said
does your mum know
you're out?
you asked
of course
Helen replied
but she said
not to be late
or come home
in the dark
you'll be safe
I've got my six-shooter
with me
you said
tapping the toy gun
tucked in the belt
of your jeans
I told Mum
I was with you
and she said ok
I don't think
she'd let me out
otherwise
a train clattered
over the bridge
over head
let's go
you said
and the three of you
walked up and along by
the Trocadero cinema
she talking about
Battered Betty's day
and what Carmody
had said at school
and how he smelt
of B.O. and cabbages
you watched the people
passing along
the New Kent Road
a constant stream
passing back
and forth
and still Helen talked
as you walked
Carmody's just a fink
you said
take no notice
what he says
and she clutched your hand
with her free hand
not clutching the doll
and you both ran
across the road
and stood outside
the Odeon cinema
gazing at the still photos
in the frames
of what film was showing inside
don't fancy that
you said
too much kissing
and women crying
and boring men
what's wrong with kissing?
Helen asked
better than men
shooting guns
or riding horses
over yellow deserts
making women cry
you looked at her
with her large eyes
behind her thick lens glasses
watery as lakes
and her brown hair
plaited into two plaits
sure
you said
how about a bag of chips?
she nodded then said
I've got no money
don't worry my dad
gave me 6d
for polishing his shoes
the other day
you said
ok
she said
and you walked down
towards the Neptune fish shop
and asked for 6d of chips
and the man
with the one eye
scooped chips
into a bag
and you gave him
the money
and Helen sprinkled
salt and vinegar over them
and you both went outside
and stood together
and shared the bag of chips
and each chip tasted
hot and salty
and warmed your insides
and Helen kissed your cheek
with her greasy warm lips
and said
thank you for these
and you said
no problem
anything to please
and you felt
the damp kiss
there on your cheek
and you smiled
to yourself
thinking
I won't wash that off
for a week.

Smoke Two Joints
(she was living in a single room with three other individuals.
One of them was a male and the other two, well, the other two were females.
God only know what they were up to in there.
And furthermore susan, I wouldnt be the least bit surprised to learn that all four of them
Habitually smoke marijuana cigarettes... reefers)
I smoke two joints in the morning.
I smoke two joints at night.
I smoke two joints in the afternoon, it makes me feel alright
I smoke two joints in time of peace, and two in time of war
I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints,
And then I smoke two more
Smoked cigarettes til the day she died
Toke a big spliff of some good sensimillia
Smoked cigarettes til the day she died
Toke a big spliff of some good sensamill...
Easy-e were ya ever caught slippin? hell no!
Daddy he once told me son you be hard workin man
And momma she once told me son you do the best you can
But, then one day I met a man who came to me and said
Hard work good, and hard work fine but first take care of head
(guitar solo)
Whoa, rock me tonight,
Whoa-oh, jah sake,
Whoa-ohh

I thought I couldn't afford to take her out and smoke as well. So I gave up cigarettes. Then I took her out and one day I looked at her and thought: ""Oh well,"" and I went back to smoking again, and that was better.

Money
Money money money
Everybody wants some
No money church can't run
Money for this
Money for that
No life without it
Can't sleep
She says hell
In this house
If she don't get it!
Before you get paid
Taxman grab it
Buy something
He grab it again
When money pressure hit
You cannot afford to get sick
Doctors want some
And if you dead without it
You will not be buried
Not even in the sticks
Money money money
It's like blood
It's the way world runs
Need money for food
Need money for fun
If you have no money
Blood a go run
Man join the army
To get some of it
Would be alive
If he had it
Money money money
Where is the money?
Have to get money
Before the day is done
Donkey cough
When you are broke
No money
Donkey don't eat
Everything stops
Earth can't turn
Have to have money
Even some to burn
Money money money
Where did it go?
Pocket is empty
And I just got paid
Maybe my woman took it
Thought I had it made
Thought I had a hundred
But I don't have twenty
Now I am in trouble
I have to leave yard
But I can't leave
If I don't have any
What a thing this is
Money! money! money!
Eh!

But It Makes Me Lots Of Money
Cigarette addiction kills people
But it makes me lots of money
It ruins their health
But it makes me lots of money
They cannot breathe properly
But it makes me lots of money
Their addiction causes them misery
But it makes me lots of money
A trillion cigarette butts pollute our earth daily
But it makes me lots of money
Cigarettes cause fires which burn many people to death
But it makes me lots of money
Parents buy cigarettes when their children need to eat
But it makes me lots of money
Cigarette smoke fills our bars and nightclubs, very unpleasant
But it makes me lots of money
Dirty ashtrays are disgusting
But it makes me lots of money
Why are you allowed to promote and sell such a disgusting product?
Because I've got lots of money

Big Black Smoke
She was sick and tired of country life.
A little country home,
A little country folk,
Made her blood run cold.
Now her mother pines her heart away,
Looking for her child in the big black smoke,
In the big black smoke.
Frailest, purest girl the world has seen,
According to her ma, according to her pa,
And everybody said,
That she knew no sin and did no wrong,
Till she walked the streets of the big black smoke,
Of the big black smoke.
Well, she slept in caffs and coffee bars and bowling alleys,
And every penny she had
Was spent on purple hearts and cigarettes.
She took all her pretty coloured clothes,
And ran away from home
And the boy next door,
For a boy named joe.
And he took her money for the rent
And tried to drag her down in the big black smoke,
In the big black smoke.
In the big black smoke.
In the big black smoke.

Cigarettes In Hell
Spend you days just walking and shopping
Depending on how much you're luck is in
Spend the night-life table-hopping
And trying to keep that bag of bones in trim
I don't mind not being immortal
'Cos it ain't all that as far as I can tell
I don't mind not going to heaven
As long as they've got cigarettes
As long as they've got cigarettes in hell
And by the time we start getting used to it
The dope that's forming on the windowsill
Now we know we've got ourselves into
The cage that keeps the mice on the treadmill
I don't mind not being immortal
'Cos it ain't all that as far as I can tell
I don't mind not going to heaven
As long as they've got cigarettes
As long as they've got cigarettes in hell
I don't mind not being immortal
Because it ain't all that as far as I can tell
I don't mind not going to heaven
As long as they've got cigarettes
As long as they've got cigarettes in hell

Headlines
I met a girl with bottles of wine
Though I prefer red, they tasted all right
Very soon, the room was spinning
Tug of war, the floor was winning
Thats when she said, I cant help but laugh when Im caught in a lie
Im not who you thought, but you can kiss me good night
Her mouth was full of dirty words
Then cigarettes burned afterwards, thats when she said
Having a headline must be some experience
Having a headlines a sexual experience
Letters and postcards I meant to respond
Turned out my all was just medium
Then came one that said the only thing you ever gave were bad directions
Id say it to your face but I cant find you
Having a headline...
I loved the fame and fashion till she said you better ration the good times
I wouldnt count on the good times
Having a headline...

What Cedric Said About His Sister.
Cedric followed you
around the playground
at high school
it seemed he wanted
to say something to you
but instead he just followed
you around until
as you stood looking over
at the playing field
where kids were gathering
in their break period
he said
my sister likes you
how do you know?
you asked
because she told me
he replied blushing
looking over at the playing field
isn't she your twin?
Yes
he said
going red
gazing at his sister
standing with a group
of friends on the field
you looked over at the girls
at Cedric's sister waving a hand
so that's Christina
yes
he muttered
the one with the dark hair
and waving a hand
then he went silent
and looked at you
Mother said she's too young for boyfriends
he said after a few moments
but she doesn't listen
she does what she wants
so she told me to tell you
she likes you
and so you nodded
and waved your hand
back at the girls
and there was an explosion
of giggling and laughter
and waving of hands
and then they ran off
onto the field
and as they ran off
you noticed Cedric's sister
had a cute butt
but you didn't tell him that
you just turned and said
fancy a game of ball?
and he just nodded
and said nothing more
about his sister at all.

A highly valuable chain of thoughts
HAD cigarettes no ashes,
And roses ne'er a thorn,
No man would be a funker
Of whin, or burn, or bunker.
There were no need for mashies,
The turf would ne'er be torn,
Had cigarettes no ashes,
And roses ne'er a thorn.
Had cigarettes no ashes,
And roses ne'er a thorn,
The big trout would not ever
Escape into the river.
No gut the salmon smashes
Would leave us all forlorn,
Had cigarettes no ashes,
And roses ne'er a thorn.
But 'tis an unideal
Sad world in which we're born,
And things will 'go contrairy'
With Martin and with Mary:
And every day the real
Comes bleakly in with morn,
And cigarettes have ashes,
And every rose a thorn.

Generations
I awoke to a threat that was empty, and a grandstand of Im not through with you yet
A slamming door becomes my punctuation
I escape for a thrill ride with my friends, they agree to be temporary guardians
Man, its so appreciated, summer day intoxicated
With those who can relate, 2 months, a day, a wakeup
Drink it down, dear brother, their generation smothers you
And well leave no trail to discover
Build a callus sister, theyre generation blisters
Another wakeup with the morning hung over, we gonna pack up or waste another killer day
Then our heads exploded, overload when we decide
Hello... were so out of here, hitchhike to canada with backpacks full of cigarettes and beer
Man, its so appreciated, summer day intoxicated
With those who can relate, 2 months, a day, a wakeup
Drink it down, dear brother..
Listen up dear father, your generation bothers me and Ill leave you to grieve
With my mother
Build a callus sister, theyre generation blisters
Now empty your bottles and open the throttles, theres plenty of fighting ahead
Those fists werent made for resting your head
Shield your eyes, dear mother, from the pain that hovers
Round the mess of a man youve uncovered
Drink it down, dear brother...
Well blister

Cigarettes
Pack it up cigarettes on the counter.carrying the governer of california
And still they want the money , still they want the tax
Still they want the money still they want the tax
Why not take paper courancy and lighten up and lower the contents
And the p-p-puff
Then you could keep the money you could keep the tax.
You could keep the money you could keep the tax
Fields raisen, growin tobacco
Could be used to feed a third world country.
This is the age of democracy
Everybody's saying : vote for me...vote for me
Blind leader leading the blind
The cheaters and the cheaters who were always kind.
And still theywant the money , still they want the tax
still theywant the money , still they want the tax
THe tax
the tax
the tax
still theywant the money , still they want the tax
still theywant the money , still they want the tax
still theywant the money , still they want the tax
But the biggest serial killer is a heart attack

Like your heart dropped acid
And you know you're half broken; feels like your jutting ribs are cutting into you more every day. I don't have to watch your envy kick your pride in the balls. I don't have to listen as your enigma prevails in an argument with facts. A mind cast to the gallows, a Holocaust for your very own heart. You can roll those sunken eyes all you want, dearie.
Subtle at first. One smoke, two smoke, three smoke, four... And, karmic, no one ever questioned you about it as you had hoped, even though you had an answer for every cigarette. Overdoses and guns were too shocking; slitting wrists too much like a teenage girl. (Sometimes, I wonder if you forgot that's what you were.) Out-and-out suicide was wrong, you said, but it lost its sting if you strung it out over decades. All our old friends, the ones you started hanging out with again, the ones who quit smoking, they'll roll cigarettes for you. They love to roll cigarettes, and roll their earrings, and argue about anarchy. And you love them, and you love the cigarettes, the music, the sweat and patchouli, the panhandling, how their...your...minds always beat in straight time.
But you fell measures behind, and the music, the freight-hopping, the cigarettes, they mean nothing to you now. Everyone knows your beauty scars aren't from brambles or kittens, and that's the way you like it. You can only use that bleach as an excuse for hair caught in the drain for so long.
I'm listening to you recount your inner-battles, with all the vehemence of a wall flower, and I finally understand.
You just want to be beautifully fucked up. Or pretty, like your heart dropped acid.

Mum And Dad's Silly Sayings
If you keep looking that way your face will stay,
Said my mum when I pulled a face one day;
What made her say it, how could it be?
It seemed so very silly, would it happen to me?
I have eyes in the back of my head, was it true?
So my sister searched for them, but no can do,
Where would a second pair of eyes ever be?
No, we couldn't find them, wasn't that funny?
I think of another saying she said to us three,
When we asked for her to give us some money;
Do you think, that I'm rich, or money grows on the tree?
So why would she say that, we never ever did see.
There was another one, when we asked how they met,
Was told in the cabbage patch, but was she a bug or a pet?
And then dad said to our surprise, we met in when in the cot,
But when we asked them how, it seemed to put them in a spot.
So! Why do parents go on with such talk, it doesn't make sense,
Like if we wanted take away,, let's do window shopping it's no expense;
But looking and not buying never filled us at all, we still were hungry,
And when we asked again and said I'm hungry, she'd say hello hungry.
I glad I don't go on like my mother and my dad,
The silly and ridiculous sayings, sure made me mad;
How could they say them, when they were not real,
Mum's say we are stupid, and don't care how we feel.

Where Babies Come From
For my eighth birthday
I got a toy train set
my father helped assemble.
My job was to hand him
pieces of track and re-light
the cigarettes that went out
in his mouth. Halfway
through, I asked him
where babies come from.
He told me that eight years
ago today I showed up
on the front stoop
in a cardboard box, how
he spent the whole afternoon
putting me together,
just like this train set,
that I was probably lucky
the box arrived on a Saturday.

My Birthday
Today's my birthday
Thought you'd be here to stay
Thought i'd see your eyes gleam
As we run through meadows green
Feel the warmth of your hand
As we walk over the sand
Thought i'd have you next to me
Wild and free, a sight to see.
Share our dreams and our life
The happiness and the strife
But today's my birthday
And you've run away
I've got a hole in my heart
And you are still tearing it apart.
The memories and things we shared
Now have become my nightmares
I wish i could change it all
But it never was my call
I gave everything i had
And got stabbed in the back
Today's my birthday
I thought you would stay
Today's my birthday
But it doesnt matter anyway
Cause today's my birthday
But you ran away

Why I be around till the winner is announced (*Puff : The winner is...*)
So there ya go girl with thousands in ya palms
Why you can't let by gones be by gones
[112]
Where do we go
What must I do
If I can't live without your love
Thinkin' of you, makes me feel, baby
Like I am the only one for you
Girl I want to be with you
No one else, only you
Why can't we just make it happen
Baby, I need you in my life
[Puff Daddy]
I thought I told you that we won't stop
I thought I told you that we won't stop
I thought I told you that we won't stop
I thought I told you that we won't stop
Eh eh, eh eh
I thought I told you that we won't stop
I thought I told you that we won't stop
eh eh
I thought I told you that we won't stop
I thought I told you that we won't stop
