Skin A Rabbit
Uncle showed you
the way to skin a rabbit.
The dead furred creature
swung from his hand.
You remember the knife
slitting open
the soft belly
and the innards
dragged out
and cut
until all was cleared
out and ready.
Then he broke
the back ankles
and pulled off the skin,
like one undressing
a small woman
from her coat of fur,
until the naked body
remained
and the fur covered
the head.
You watched
with your stomach moving
as he chopped off
the head
and with the fur covered over,
tossed it in a bag
to be disposed of later.
There’s dinner,
Uncle said,
one naked rabbit,
small and cold
and dead.

Uncle's Shave.
Uncle’s Shave.
You used to watch Uncle
shave in front of the small mirror
propped on the edge
of the kitchen sink,
his face lathered
in white soap,
his cutthroat razor
held just a short distance
from his skin
by his right hand,
as the other hand
held the skin taut
in preparation
of the razor’s slide.
You stood behind
fascinated,
your young eyes
searching the mirror’s world
of Uncle’s face
and the performers start.
Uncle watched you
in the mirror,
his lips breaking
into a small smile,
the razor held
just above his ear,
his eyes staring above
the shaving foam,
taking in
your fascinated gaze,
the open mouth,
your hands copying
Uncle’s motion
in pretend shave.
Uncle drew the razor down
his cheek in slow motion,
the face becoming visible
as the soap gave way,
the hand dipping
the razor in water
to rid of foam,
to begin again,
more soap removed,
more skin revealed.
You copied Uncle,
but not so skilled.

Clipped Wings
on clipped wings
i shall face you
my lion's teeth all pulled
my eagle's covered
my slimy skin rubbed
into softness
on this helplessness
i shall test you
what am i to you
if like a man stripped
of its riches and
grandeur
naked and cold
shall you still take
me in the comfort
of your body?

Will One Day Go.
Sorry about
your granddad's death
Judith said
as you stood
beside her
by the pond
at the back
of the house
in the woods
the autumn sun
lighting up patches
of the water's skin
it was sudden
you said
my uncle told me
she took
your hand
in hers
and squeezed
her soft skin
on yours
her thumb
rubbing
the back
of your hand
best remember him
as he was
she said
living and smiling
not some place
lying dead
you nodded
trying
to conjure up
when you'd
seen him last
sitting in
the back garden
of his house
months earlier
talking
of his flowers
he'd grown
from seed
his white hair
moved slightly
by the breeze
he liked my new suit
you said
thought it looked smart
she kissed your cheek
and said
hold on
to things
like that
your memories
place them
in a drawer
inside your head
a jackdaw flew
across the skin
of the pond
the black and white
of wings and tail
reflected
in the water
below
what comes
from God
she whispered
whether
nature's beauty
or ones
we love
will one day
sadly go.

Run, Rabbit, Run
When I looked you in the eye
I knew it was time for good-bye
You were the only one I had around
But you couldnt keep your feet on the ground
Run rabbit run
But whats that youre runnin for
Run rabbit run
You aint gonna run no more
Bye bye baby, bye bye bird!
Thought the cold sidewalk stones
Broke your little brittle bones
I know you were already dead
When the truck rolled over your head
Bye bye baby, bye bye bird!
Originally by smack.

Butterfly
(clarke / hicks / nash)
We met on the shore of a lemonade lake.
Weeping willows looked down where we lay.
Orange blossoms I smell in your hair.
Butterfly, flutter by, butterfly by.
Waterfalls send your ripples to us
Here on the shore of the lemonade lake.
Pond lilies play hide and seek with the fish.
Rabbit run, run rabbit, rabbit run by.
Roaring mountain is standing close by,
Covered with snowdrops and glistening with dew.
I hear the sound of a small hummingbird.
I took your hand and I waltzed off with you.
Come to the top of the mountain with me.
Jump on a cloud and well float to and fro.
Seeing the countryside covered with grass
And the top of the mountain with candy-floss and snow.
Butterfly lazily drinking the sun,
Lavishly sprinkled and painted with gold.
Here in the land of the mist and the lake,
Me and my true love will never grow old.

Winter Musing
And the December weather
was upon you and the winter
evenings were drawing in and
she wanted to hold your hand
as you walked home after getting
off the school bus and the cold
air bit into flesh and you held her
hand and sensed the pulse in her
and the life there and the skin
on skin thing and some kind of
electrical buzz through your veins
and into your heart and head and
the traffic went by fast pushing up
wet from the road and you remember
the black tarmac then and her years
later by cruel cancer dragged dead.

Dial 8
On a sea of nails in self doubt
I push this feeling further into this sound.
In all this failing i could never hide
The truth of pain that left me broken on the inside.
We are the future, We are the lie
Trapped in holy innocence we only wish to thrive
We are the nightmare buried deep in your mind
We are the travesty sweetened with your pain.
Alive, Alive, but Barely Alive.
Alive, Alive, but Barely Alive.
Shepherds spreading death
Dragged outside shot in the head.
Holy maimed again.
Dragged outside shot in the head.
A million faces in a bloody shroud
I hear their voices calling me to put you down.
Covered in blood, drowning in my hate
I covered my eyes, I covered your eyes
I covered my eyes.
We are the cancer eating at your mind.
We are the ministries for all of your crimes.
Shepherds spreading deaht.
Dragged outside shot in the head
Holy maimed again.
Dragged outside shot in the head
Dragged outside shot in the head
Holy maimed, holy maimed again.

Optical Illusion
Optical Illusion
It was an old rabbit, glass eyed and stuffed, that sat on
a window sill it also had a bald spot on top of its head,
petted by children who knew it was alive. The window it
sat by faced the woods and on a day when window was
open, and it was a day in May, it vanished. Hunters had
seen it jump through the air fast as a midnight shadow.
A rich man bought the woods chopped down trees and
filled in the tarn, where it often had been seen smiling to
its own image. This so he could get a trophy on his wall
and be famous as the man who shot the phantom rabbit.
He went insane all he could find was a yellow plastic duck.
A stuffed rabbit sits on the window sill it has glass eyes,
a bald spot on top of its head; snowing outside it deeply
sighs good to be indoors on a day like this.

Nude myself again
i came naked with no name in my hand and my head
is ready to a wonderful words you and i can understand,
the many plan, you want me to follow; in the womb
until the tomb, you have given me a chance to love you
and kept all your everlasting command
cloth me to protect the precious gift of life you
connect, hundred and thousand of years the Lord has
prepared, as the angel and the prophet commit, my mind
and body comes to see, that God of heaven and the hell is
ready, for who ever followed in thy heart and soul will have
an eternity
my deep sleep, always tell my naked eye to fly, of where
the sky is high and bright each day as it says good bye;
the naked where i was born, returning naked soul i'll be
home
come home my darling naked body in the bosom spirit
your naked immortal soul will stay........in the judgment
time you will say a beautiful good bye

Man Called Uncle
now those newsprints all over your face
well maybe that's why I can read you like a book
just when I thought I was getting my taste a bite
I go and lose my appetite
look at the man that you'd call uncle
they'd like to sink their teeth in to you
for the pride and the pleasure
and the privilege of having you
if I say you're the one do you think that I'm serious
you get that kind of talk from older men
if I say I love you then I must be delirious
so why are you trying to put my temperature up again
look at the man that you'd call uncle
having a heart-attack 'round your ankles
when you wake up with x-rated eyes
when you wake up still shaking
how could I apologize as your check you affects
and you check your reflection
I'm so affected in the face of your affection
look at the man that you'd call uncle
having a heart-attack 'round your ankles
I could swear I could promise
that I'll always be true to you
but we may not live to be so old
I could even say I'm going to do something new to you
now the girls I see just leave me cold
look at the man that you'd call uncle

September Chill.
Uncle brings in the dead chicken by
The neck and begins plucking out the
Feathers with a skill that fascinates
Your 10 year old eyes and as you stand
And watch the chicken gradually becomes
Nude and some how not so grand not so
Chicken-like and then Uncle cuts off the
Head and throws it a side and then guts
It and washes it through with water and
Then puts it down on a large plate where
It lays in a solemn silence without fanfare
Or hymns or prayers just Uncle lighting up
A cigarette and you staring at the chicken
Clean and pure and still and from the open
Window a cool evening late September chill.

My Man
My man
Muscles from hand to foot
Completely covered in uninteruppted skin
My man
Signals command the leg
To follow orders coming down from headquarters
Why then am I in bed?
I guess my mans fallen out with my head
May I direct your attention to the following simile
Youre like the coasts of an ocean
Buried beneath is a submarine cable
Connecting the opposite shores that surround it
My man
How can he stand?
Your fingers could encircle clear around the ankle
My man wont walk again
In conflict with express instructions given by the brain
Why cant the message be sent?
I guess my mans fallen out with my head
When something happens to drag on the floor of the ocean
For instance an anchor or mooring
The cable can be disrupted and even be severed
Which halts the transmission across it
There is no way to repair the break
My man
Muscles from hand to foot
Completely covered in uninteruppted skin
My man
Signals command the leg
To follow orders coming down from headquarters
My man
How can he stand?
My man
Muscles from hand to foot
Completely covered in uninteruppted skin
My man
Wont walk again

Skin Stealer
This evening I unzipped my skin
And carefully unscrewed my head,
Exactly as I always do
When I prepare myself for bed.
And while I slept a coo-coo came
As naked as could be
And put on the skin
And screwed on the head
That once belonged to me.
Now wearing my feet
He runs through the street
In a most disgraceful way.
Doin' things and sayin' things
I'd never do or say,
Ticklin' the children
And kickin' the men
And Dancin' the ladies away.
So if he makes your bright eyes cry
Or makes your poor head spin,
That scoundrel you see
Is not really me
He's the coo-coo
Who's wearing my skin.

Biology
Lizards
are
cold-
blooded
and conditioned to move
sleek
through
your
fingers.
He opened
two
yellow
disconcerting
eyes:
lips, fists, skin, palms, elements, toes, mountain tops, lips
strings, teeth, voice, muscles, corals, a couple in a boat lost, sea surface, someone's grandmother's tattoo, a child's back, or a nose of a rabbit or a twenty-footed starfish,
eyes:
tightened.

tightened.
Tightened
My lizard understands
Swahilli
is
warm
and tells
me
that:
if
eyelashes of
2 million people
in a small country
were
green
grass
on home
walls
they
would
see:
my lizard
understands-
is
warm.
I look
back into
my son's
eyes-
and remember
clearly
the warbling&sleek
warm
feeling
in
my
womb
and stomach
for nine
months.
And
a

of
the
brittle
coarse
little
dotty,

on mine,
in the hospital bed.

Dis/enchantment?
the blemish on the moon
was made to be seen as
a patient old woman
ready to wrap me in her
white clothes smelling queerly
of old age that gave some security
or a spritely rabbit ready to jump out
just to amuse me with her flurry coat
i failed to pass on that moon
to my son whom the stars
lured into their web of reality
...all that i knew at much older age
he knew right as a teenager...
i still seek the old lady
and the fluffy rabbit up there
while he engages himself
negotiating the here and now

As My Uncle Used To Say
I've thought a power on men and things,
As my uncle ust to say,--
And ef folks don't work as they pray, i jings!
W'y, they ain't no use to pray!
Ef you want somepin', and jes dead-set
A-pleadin' fer it with both eyes wet,
And _tears_ won't bring it, w'y, you try _sweat_,
As my uncle ust to say.
They's some don't know their A, B, Cs,
As my uncle ust to say,
And yit don't waste no candle-grease,
Ner whistle their lives away!
But ef they can't write no book, ner rhyme
No ringin' song fer to last all time,
They can blaze the way fer the march sublime,
As my uncle ust to say.
Whoever's Foreman of all things here,
As my uncle ust to say,
He knows each job 'at we 're best fit fer,
And our round-up, night and day:
And a-sizin' _His_ work, east and west,
And north and south, and worst and best
I ain't got nothin' to suggest,
As my uncle ust to say.

Dead Or Alive
There in the shadows, looks like a hand
Without its owner, to give it a command
Its got a purpose but I dont know what it is
Im in trouble
There in the streets, looks like a man
But something wrong that I dont understand
His eyes are open but he dont see a thing
His skin is peeling off, his bones are sticking out
Im getting scared
Oh my God (is it dead? )
Is it living? (is it dead? )
Is it dead or alive?
(is it dead? ), is it dead? (is it dead? )
Is it dead? (is it dead? )
Is it dead or alive?
Hiding in the cupboards, like little mice
Hiding in the frigerator, that isnt nice
Its not an animal, it dont have legs
No one else can see it
It moves so fast, corner of my eye
Look again its gone, its hiding
Wont somebody help me, doesnt anybody care?
It waits so patiently, for me to lose my guard
Im getting scared
Is it dead, is it
(is it dead)
Is it dead
(is it dead)
Is it dead or alive
(is it dead)
Is it dead
(is it dead)
Is it dead, is it
I remember there was a time
When dead and buried meant just that
Underneath the cold dark ground
Things stay put!
Oh them bones they make them bodies walk
Them bones, them bones
If they could only talk!
Is it dead (fade)

The Cat Is Dead
Deedle dee, three tots are we.
And were as clever as can be.
We live with grandma ida and our dear old grandpa ned
And little baby mike (the brat)
And dont forget the siamese cat
And in the attic from detroit is big, fat uncle fred
Oh grandpa wishes he were rich,
And grandma just complains (the bitch)
And uncle fred gets drunk while mike just cries all night and day
The cat thinks that he owns the place
He bites and scratches on the face
Itd be so nice if they just went away, away
Ooh daddle, daddle daddle daddle daddle daddle day
(chorus)
The cat is dead, the cat is dead
I went to pat him on the head
He didnt purr, he didnt meow he didnt blink or snip.
He seemed to have a funny smile that made me laugh
But all the while, the tail that used o flip and flap
Got awful cold and stiff.
We chopped him into tiny bits,
And seasoned him with apple bits
And with some dust, we made a crust and put him in a pie.
Into the oven he did sit, until the crust was nice and crisp
Ill love that little kitty till I die.
Dee die, dee di-de-di-de-di-de-di-de-di-de-di-de-di.
The cat is dead, the cat is dead.
And mikey too, and uncle fred
Expiring oh so suddenly while sipping down some tea.
The tea was hot, the tea was hot
With stricknine and a little spice to
Cover up the funny taste of our conspiracy.
When grandpa saw what we had done,
He went straight for his hunting gun
But we were quick we sole the clip
The rest is history
To make sure grandma wouldnt flea
We gave her a lobotomy
And nows shes just as happy as can be
Dee dee, dee deedle deedle deedle deedle deedle deedle dee
(chorus)

Let Us Be Friendly With Everybody!
Rabbit and Tortoise
Went for a race;
Envy villain rabbit
Threw the stone at Hero Rabbit;
Hero Rabbit's leg got broken,
Limping Rabbit couldn't run fast!
Hero Rabbit lost the match,
This is how Tortoise won the race.
Lesson is, 'Don't have enmity'
Let us be friendly with everybody!
