A House With No Curtains

(alan jackson/jim mcbride)
We still wear our rings
We still say I love you
We both play the part
Oh so well
But everyone knows
Its just a sad show
And were only foolin ourselves
Its like living in a house with no curtains
The whole world can see whats inside
You can turn out the lights in a house with no curtains
But the heartache has nowhere to hide
We could pack up and leave in different directions
If we just had somewhere to go
We just keep on pretending
Afraid of the ending
Admitting what everyone knows
Its like living in a house with no curtains
The whole world can see whats inside
You can turn out the lights in a house with no curtains
But the heartache has nowhere to hide
You can turn out the lights
In a house with no curtains
But the heartache has nowhere to hide

Until The Silence Reigns

and so it happens
the clock strikes seven

you dream about curtains
catching flames
the house screams
and you discover you
are but a wall of this
structure

you look at the clock
on your side
it is seven

but seven what?
you get up from bed
and proceed to the CR
wash your face
feeling like a wall still
you rub the soap
and feel your cheek
you slap it

you feel like a wall
and the curtains continue to burn themselves
the house scream at its loud voice
you are still this wall
and you do not really care

to ash from ash
and to ash you shall return

there is no hurry no fright no panic
let death come with grace

the wall is flat and inanimate
let the curtains burn let the house scream
until the silence of the ash reigns

Charade

The ivory glow of the house lights dim
then come alive again.
A signal to the audience
their journey is about to begin.

The lights go down darkness prevails.
Subdued idle conversation ceases.
The anticipative silence broken
only by a muffled unintentional cough.

Closed ornate curtains shield the stage.
Concealing from the spectators
all clues to upcoming events.
A calculated pause focuses their attention.

As though on their own the curtains part.
Revealing the setting designed to weave
spectators from the humdrum of reality.
Into the mystical world of make believe.

The cast in the order of their appearance
ply well their skills rousing all’s imagination.
So well they seem to have become the roles they play.
Masters of deception they truly are.

Tempting drawing and holding the audience
in the web of the masquerade.
To fool and entertain them
will be the successful completion of the charade.

Mad Cat

For Tiger
1981-1999

For everyone who has
or who have had a pet cat or dog
will know they have a funny five minutes
from time to time.
They get up to some silly tricks,
but to them it is just a bit of fun.
The story I am about to relate
is a true story about a late cat of ours.
His name was tiger,
but he was a big softy.
A gentle giant of fourteen pounds.
Every so often he would race around the house,
up and down the stairs,
over the settee and then up the net curtains.
One day while I was watching TV, he started his game.
He raced around the house like a mad thing.
Up the curtains, he went all fourteen pounds of him.
The stress was too much for the curtains,
and at the seem they ripped.
Tiger swung like Tarzan
from one side of the window to the other.
When he stopped,
he jumped off and lay on the settee
as if nothing had happened.
He then stared up at me
with his big innocent eyes as if to say.
Dad, what is the matter?

Turn Some More Lights On

Roy orbison
Turn some more, turn some more
Turn some more lights on
Turn some more, turn some more
Turn some more lights on
I came by your house last night
I was feeling so blue
We didnt have a date
I was lonely for you
I walked all the way
To break my heart in two
I saw the lights turned way down low
Oh, someone else was kissing you
Turn some more, turn some more
Turn some more lights on
Turn them all, turn them all
Turn them all back on
Make him leave, make him leave
Make him leave, leave you alone
Im standing in the rain
See you there with him
Oh theres so much pain
See the lights so dim
I see you smile that same old smile
In that same old way
But you smiled, you smiled, you smiled at me
Oh yesterday, yesterday
Turn some more, turn some more
Turn some more lights on
Turn them all, turn them all
Turn them all back on...

Keep The House A Little Darker

Keep the house a little darker
Let the curtains remain drawn-still
It is not right to leave the door open....
Wear your robe
And in the safest chamber of the house
Recall the unlearned prayer.....
He always enters
Through closed doors...

I Did It

I did it
Im mixing up a bunch of magic stuff
A magic mushroom cloud of care
A potion that will rock the boat will rock
Make a bomb of love and blow it up
I did it
Do you think Ive gone too far
I did it
Guilty as charged
I did it
It was me right or wrong
I did it
Yeah
I never did a single thing that did a single thing to
Change the ugly ways of the world
I didnt know it felt so right inside
I didnt know it all
Open up the curtains I heard sirens there the lights flash and crawl
I did it justice I just did it for the buzz
Its a nickel or a dime for what Ive done
The truth is that I dont really care
For such a lovely crime Ill do the time
You better lock me up Ill do it again
I did it
Do you think Ive gone too far
I did it
Guilty as charged
I did it
It was me right or wrong
I did it
Yeah
I never did a single thing that did a single thing to
Change the ugly ways of the world
I didnt know it felt so right inside
I didnt know it all
Open up the curtains I heard sirens there the lights flash and crawl
I did it justice I just did it for us all, you know
All you people are the skewers of our dreams
Like the cat collared me
Oh what I gotta say to you got love dont
Turn it down
Turn it loud
Let it build
We got a long way to go
But you gotta start somewhere
Go door to door spread the love you got
You got the love
You get what you want
Does it matter where you get it from
I for one
Dont turn my cheek for anyone
Unturn your cheek to give your love
Love to grow
I did it
Do you think Ive gone too far
I did it
Guilty as charged
I did it
It was me right or wrong
I did it
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I did it
I told you, I told u I did
I did it
Guilty as charged
I did it
I told you, I told you I did
I did it
Yeah
I never did a single thing that did a single thing to
Change the ugly ways of the world
I didnt know it felt so right inside
I didnt know it all
Open up the curtains I heard sirens there the lights flash and crawl
I did it justice swear I just did it for us all

Overcome

I was raised to believe what I see
So I pray to God
Give me strength
Help me breathe
When they suck
Life from me
Somethings wrong Anything
CHORUS-
Wrong with me
I dont see
Anything Wrong with me
So I write and I pray
And I live day to day
And I wait
For the sun
And I love everyone
Still they find
Something wrong
CHORUS
You cant hide what inside whats inside,
You cant hide what inside whats inside,
You cant hide what inside whats inside
You cant hide what inside when you die
You cant hide whats inside when you die you will die
(break me break me down)
You cant hide whats inside when you die,
You cant hide whats inside when you die,
You cant hide whats inside when you die,
You cant hide whats inside when you die
You will die, You will die, You will die

Sea Parting

The sea shall part before your eyes
And you will not learn of darkness.
The heart grows fond of this miracle
As length of the rivers do not match.
We are in safety, we are in a house
That worked upstairs and downstairs.
Some lights are delighting the company
In the house or palace of wonders.
This night the lights are out
With the sea parting forcing us to drown
With the lights off, with the house in floods.
The real saviour is the man in the house
Who is the landlord, the only warrior of water.

The Houses

1898 -- A Song of the Dominions

'Twixt my house and thy house the pathway is broad,
In thy house or my house is half the world's hoard;
By my house and thy house hangs all the world's fate,
On thy house and my house lies half the world's hate.

For my house and thy house no help shall we find
Save thy house and my house -- kin cleaving to kind;
If my house be taken, thine tumbleth anon.
If thy house be forfeit, mine followeth soon.

'Twixt my house and thy house what talk can there be
Of headship or lordship, or service or fee?
Since my house to thy house no greater can send
Than thy house to my house -- friend comforting friend;
And thy house to my house no meaner can bring
Than my house to thy house -- King counselling King.

No Place Like Home

My friend's house is perfect,
they lead such perfect lives.
Curtains never out of place
and beds are made by 9.

The bathroom is in cream,
the toilet seat stays down.
There's tiny little ornaments
and soap balls all around.

My friend's house is perfect,
you dare not move a thing
for if you did they'd notice,
a tad embarrassing.

They dine at 6, no later
and then at half past eight
they have a cup of Earl Grey
and slithers of cream cake.

They talk of trivial matters,
the world evaporates.
Inside their house its perfect,
the world outside can wait.

That's why I run for cover,
right back here, alone.
It may not be quite perfect
but there's no place like home.

Wake Up The House

I seem to walk on ice
Some things make me think twice
When I get that resistance
Like having freedom with my hands tied
Ive censored whats inside way too long
I cant live so black and white
Somebody listen
Somebody say whats on your mind
Ive got the wheels of the reckless
Im gonna scream on the edges
Wake up the house start the clock work
Turn on the lights anybody home
Break all the glass on my windows
Wake up the house so Im not alone
Disturb this neighborhood
Maybe itll do some good
You know what Im missing
When everybodys asleep at night
Somebodys got to tlak
Might as well be my job yeah
Maybe somebodys listening
You know Ive censored this heart too long
Ive got the wheels of the restless
Im gonna scream on the edges
Wake up the house start the clock work
Turn on all the lights anybody home
Break all the glass on my windows
Wake up the house so Im not alone
I cant live so black and white
You know what Im missing
Somethings making me think twice
Is anybody listening
Repeat chorus

Should I Let You In

Should I let you in
Into my house with its concrete walls
Should I let you in
Into my room with its curtains drawn
I want to open up
And let you walk right through my door
Can you tell me
Is it worth
The risk anymore
Should I let you in ?
Should I let you in ?
Should I let you in ?
Should I let you in ?
Should I let you in
Into my far from perfect place
Should I let you see
Where I keep my secrets safe
I want to open up
But Ive been hurt this way before
Can you tell me
Is it worth the risk anymore ?
Should I let you in ?
Through my window
I see you now
Youre looking in
Im looking out
My heart will make up its mind somehow
Should I let you in into my house
Should I let you in inside these walls
Should I let you in into my heart
Should I let you in inside my world
Should I let you in ?
Should I let you in ?
Should I let you in ?

Mr. Tinkertrain

Would you like some sweeties little girl?
Come a little closer
I'm gonna show you a brand new world tonight
I've got a palace full of fantasy
Ready made just for you and me
Once you're there I'm gonna take you for a ride
CHORUS
I've got a one way ticket
To take you to the other side
I got a one way ticket
So come along and don't be shy
They call me Mr. Tinkertrain
That's how I got to get my name
They call me Mr. Tinkertrain
So come along and play my game
You'll never be the same
Close the curtains and turn out the lights
Beneath my wing it's gonna be alright
A little secret just for you and me
I've got the kind of toys you've never seen
Manmade and a bit obscene
Little angel come and sit upon my knee
CHORUS
Mr. Tinkertraain
Never be the same
Mr. Tinkertrain
Can you say Mr. Tinkertrain?
No use crying 'cause you can't go back
Now you're here to stay
You can't run, you can't hide
You can't tell me what I feel inside
Mr. Tinkertrain
That's how I got to get my name
They call me Mr. Tinkertrain
So come along and play my game
That's why they call me Mr. Tinkertrain
That's why they call me Mr. Tinkertrain

At the time...

A car pulled up, in front of a house, at four o'clock in the morning.
A man came out of the car, and stood in silence in the dark, dark dark.
Quiet as a mouse, a woman came out of the house, opened the gate and walked into a garbage bin, making a godawful clattering.

Drowsy neighbours, across the road, peeked out
from behind the nosy curtains of their boring bedroom.
But nothing happened, while the clouds moved on,
and the frail moonlight was well again.

Under a blanket of glittering stars, she handed him two suitcases
and he hurried 'round to open the boot but just then,
the toilet lights on the second floor came on.

The neighbours behind the curtains froze like statues.
Swiftly, the man and the woman crouched down behind the car.
In the quiet of the night, they could all hear the urine
gurgling long, loud and plenty into the toilet bowl.

Behind the car, the man and the woman started
groping and kissing and groping and kissing furiously.
The neighbours saw them do it by the light of the moon and stars.

When the toilet flushed, they quietly shut the boot,
tiptoed to the front, got into the car,
and the roar of the car engine died away.

The neighbours closed the curtains. Didn't say much.
Ate sandwiches and milk. Still couldn't sleep.
Started to make love loudly, as if to drown out forever
the drunken snoring beginning again
across the road.

Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Living Like A Moviestar

They got the luxury money can buy
Theyre living like kings and queens
The whole worlds crying whenever they cry
They smile when they smile at scenes
Whats left of all that glamour and glory
You find behind the doors in hollywood
Living like a moviestar
Tell me how they really are
Prisoners of roles
Until their final curtains fall
Living like a moviestar
I dont think I go too far
If I say theyre lonely after all
Too much of everything
Too much to choose
They finally lose control
Crime and insanity, scandals and booze
Theyre dying fore getting old
Whats left of all that glamour and glory
You find behind the doors in hollywood
Living like a moviestar
Tell me how they really are
Prisoners of roles
Until their final curtains fall
Living like a moviestar
I dont think I go too far
If I say theyre lonely after all
Living like a moviestar
Tell me how they really are
Prisoners of roles
Until their final curtains fall...

Feeling Like A Stranger

in this place
this house without furnitures
all floors, this house with nothing but some stairs
and windows
you built it, i was away for years and we meet again
in this house
of acquaintances
devoid of affection, i have a way of telling what is this all about
by merely looking at the ceiling
there are no lights
to clarify me, who am i? in this house where i am not even a tree
or a vine
rootless, leafless
dying,
shall i continue living here?

i feel so unlike everyone else,
i am a total stranger
in this house that you built
this house devoid of affection,
i guess i have no choice
but to leave at once

otherwise, i too shall perish

Red Light Lady

(copyright nazareth,tiflis tunes,inc.-ascap)
Down at the house with the red light
She works from seven til dawn
Youll find her there any time that you like
Some days a week shell be on
Down at the house with the red light
I was a boy not to sure of myself
When I was first taken down
Down to the house with the red light
Two miles west of town
I paid my fee and I went on in
Into the house with the red light
Pull up a chair, up the stairs
The key was cold and dampened my hand
Opened the door, heard her say;
Into my room and set yourself down
She let us lie on this shiny brass bed
Curtains and flowers in her hair
She played my soul and she shattered my head
Could not believe I was there
Down at the house with the red light
I fell in love with that lady
First love I knew, she gave me
Seven days a week, you can find her
Down at the house with the red light
I fell in love with that lady

Stranger

Look at me baby, tell me what you see
Am I the one you love or am I your enemy
You can turn your head, I can wash my hands
But Ive got to know where you stand
cause sometimes I feel like a stranger in my house
And I wonder whos lying with me
Im seeing ghosts walking round in the hallways
And they look like we used to be
When I look in the mirror I see
A stranger in my house
A stranger in my house
We built this house of love, it was safe inside these walls
But if love isnt living here, this house will surely fall
Weve got to scream, weve got to fight
Do anything to make it alright
We can scream it
Got to work it out and find the book of love
We can shout it out
Got to open up and shed a little blood
Its raining on the outside but the house has sprung a leak
I can take it, you can hit me
I can turn the other cheek
Got to do anything we got to do baby, baby look at where weve been
We can build it up, we can tear it down
But weve got to start again

Just a heartache

It's just a heartache
Just a heart break
My world is ending
My life is blending
It's just a heartache
Just a heart break

It's just a heartache
Just a heart break
I know he was not the one
He was only in for the sun
I couldn't control my heart
It was too smart
Love is an art
It's just a heartache
Just a heart break

It's just a heartache
Just a heart break
Your ego was growing
My love was flowing
Your love never started
My love was charted
Your smile shined
But your eyes were lined
It's just a heartache
Just a heart break

It's just a heartache
Just a heart break
Now I know love is sacred
And that you can't usually break it
I learned that there is love
It floats in like a dove
It's just a heartache
Just a heartbreak

It's just a heartache
Just a heartbreak
My head is ringing
My love is singing
I told my heart quit
And for it to sit
It's just a heartache
Just a heartbreak

It's just a heartache
Just a heartbreak
My world may be ending
My life may be blending
Bu he wasn't the one
he only wanted sun
So i have to let is go
I have to let my pain flow
It's just a heartache
Just a heartbreak

It's just a heartache
Just a heart break
My world is ending
My life is blending
It's just a heartache

House Of Lords

The butler henry baker extinguishes the fires
Whilst sir fredrick harold robinson casually retires
Another day tomorrow cries alan crayon steel
All must be up early to have the morning meal
The maid comes with decanter and to the butler there
Said sir heres what you ordered ,
He said no one seems to care
It must be good to live in the house of lords
It must be good to live in the house of lords
The house is now in darkness before the coming day
But at five oclock that morning , the master passed away
The housemaid drew the curtains and the doctors watched the dawn
And the brother bendix sadly watched the gardener mow the lawn
It must be sad to live in the house of lords
It must be sad to live in the house of lords
Grandma mildred marshall was pouring out the tea
When she heard about the news of sir fredericks tragedy
The hall is now in sadness and everybody cried
On the banks of burntley river is where sir frederick lies
It must be sad to live in the house of lords
It must be sad to live in the house of lords
