On the Way.

(- what follows is a true story. more a story than a poem. yet, one I have so wanted for so long to tell... -)

On the way
Southbound far into Texas.
It's a long stretch of asphalt,
When the night is late, and so dark
Out on highway 277, moving
From Sonora to Del Rio... and points further south.
Not another soul about,
Just me, my old truck, and the stars.
It's quiet
- and lonely -
Headed down old Mexico way...
Pass a car sitting on the side
- broke down I'm sure -
A coyote with fear and hunger in its eyes
Runs across the road, right in front of me.
Then, a mile or so up, I see him, walking,
Gas can in hand.
I stop, open the door and holler:
' need a lift? '
He simply says: ' gracias ' and climbs aboard.
I pull back out onto the empty road,
Start a conversation,
He smiles, and with very broken English
Does his best to respond.
It takes a spell but I soon understand
He is on his way to Mexico too,
- it is the old homeland for him -
His car ran out of gas,
And most important of all
His wife who is pregnant awaits his return...
in the car!
I offer to go back to get her.
He softly says no... he must get the gas.
The way he speaks, the way he moves,
Lends me to know, this is a gentle, hard-working man
- with a heart as big, and old, as all of Mexico -
More difficult conversation follows,
But, it is so well worth the effort;
I can't say quite why
But I have quickly grown to like and respect this good, simple man
- as if an amigo I've known from old -
He came north to find work,
Provide for his family.
I went south for rest,
And to find meaning.
But, things never work out exactly as planned.
They decided it important to have their nino
- so soon due -
In Mexico, among family, grandparents and such
- this is ofcourse as it should be -
They have little money,
And no friends up here;
If only they can make it back
To Old-Mexico.

Together, me and my new found friend,
Drive deep into the night,
Not once seeing another car.
It's a long, desolate way to a town
With an open gas station.
I am glad for the company of such an honest soul.
He is glad for the ride.
Twice along the journey we see a falling star
- 'good medicine' my red brothers would say -
One for him, and one for me.
Finally a station with lights aglow comes into view.
As we stop, he offers me a dollar
From the small stash of bills he has waded up in his pocket.
I ofcourse refuse,
And offer him much more in return
- ' a gift for the new baby ' I happily say -
or, gas money to get you home.
He smiles, sincerely thanks me,
And gently, proudly refuses.
- I wish he'd take it, I so want to give it -
I tell him I'll wait
And give him a ride back;
I think he feels he has burdened me too much already;
Ofcourse he has not at all,
This ride has been as much for me,
As for him
- God knows -
But, he insists someone here will give him a return ride.
I cannot change his resolute mind.
So, I wish him all the best,
Feeling I should say, and do,
Something more...
But I don't know what;
We shake hands
- and for just a brief moment of grace
we are hermanos, brothers of light in a dark world -
He closes the door.
Turns, with can in hand,
And slowly walks away...
On his own way, back to Old-Mexico.
I pull out onto the road.
The trip is now lonlier than ever.
In my own way, I too
Am on the way,
Back home
- to an old country, where I belong -

It's been nearly 30 years now,
I think of him often.
I wonder if he ever recalls me at all.
I wish I'd have gotten his name
...so I knew who to pray for...
I wish he'd have taken the money
...so his wife would have had enough to eat...
I wish I'd have given him the ride back
...so I knew they were safe...

I wonder how they are.
Did he find work?
Did he get caught up in revolution?
Is he still alive?
Was their child a boy or a girl?
- now a man or a woman -
I'm certain I shall never see him again,
in this world,
Yet, what if someday, by some great chance,
His child and my child should cross paths... along the way,
Fully unaware of the history of it all?
What if somewhere
On a lonley, dark desert night
His child gives my child a ride;
A ride that perhaps
- in ways unknown to any of us -
Saves them... saves us all...

What a deep mystery life is.
Could it possibly be
That every little deed we do,
On our way through,
To wherever it is we go,
Matters in ways
We may never, here, know?
- may we all find the Way,
on our way -

Rodeo Or Mexico

For a change
I headed south
Across the border
For the pesos and
A different horse to ride
Id be back to make
The rodeo in waco
But that was long
Before I saw them
Dark brown eyes
With long black hair and
English bad and broken
Her body said the words
She couldnt find
As I hung on every word
She left unspoken
The question started
Leaning on my mind
[chorus:]
Rodeo or mexico
They both can keep
A cowboy satisfied
Rodeo or mexico
The only way
I know how to decide
Is just to get on and ride
We danced all night
Beneath that sheet of cotton
And you just dont
Tell a girl like that goodbye
But the cowboy life
Aint easily forgotten
Though lying there
I couldnt help
But wonder why
[repeat chorus]
The morning
Found the answer
Dawning on me
As I woke up to the
Sharp end of a knife
He was screaming at
The woman hanging on me
Does anybody know the
Spanish word for wife?
[repeat chorus]

Bringing It Back

Thirty days have September
In a jailhouse I remember
Well, I got caught with too much soul
Bringing it back from Mexico
Bringing it back from Mexico
Spanish lights and pretty faces
Trip you out to where the place is
Load you up and let you go
Bringing it back from Mexico
Bringing it back from Mexico
Across the border is where you'll get her
And when it's good there ain't no better
I think I'll get me some to go
A-brining it back from Mexico
Bringing it back from Mexico

Ride Child Ride

Well Im sitting here this evening
Ive got some old friends on my mind, yeah I do
Yeah, me and slick and davy saluting mr. daniels
For the very first time
We was jamming to old jimi, singing purple haze,
No doubt, no, no
I think between weed and whiskey
My head went north and man, my feet went south
We had some good times,
And man do I remember them well
Those days are long gone,
But now I got to tell you just how we left some stories to tell
Chorus:
Ride, child ride
Hell we had some good times then
Ride, child, ride
Sometimes I need those times again
Do you remember when?
Remember all our big talk,
How we were going to be president, one day, baby
How we were going to save the whole world
But man, I got to tell you lord,
Didnt have a clue back then
We had some good times,
And man do I remember them well
Those days are long gone,
But now I got to tell you just how we left some stories to tell
Chorus
Ride, child, ride
Hell, we had some good times then
Ride, child ride
Sometimes I need those times again
Ride, child ride
Hell, we had some good times then
Ride, child, ride
Take me back there, man, do you remember when?

The Seashores Of Old Mexico

I left, out of Tucson, with no destination in mind.
I was runnin' from trouble and the jail-term the Judge had in mind.
And the border meant freedom, a new life, romance,
And that's why I thought I should go,
And start my life over on the seashores of old Mexico.
My first night in Juarez, lost all the money I had.
One bad senorita made use of one innocent lad.
But I must keep on runnin'; it's too late to turn back:
I'm wanted in Tucson, I'm told.
Yeah, an' things'll blow over on the seashores of old Mexico.
Two Mexican farmers en route to a town I can't say,
Let me ride on the back of a flatbed half-loaded with hay.
Down through Durango, Colima, Almiera,
Then in the Manzanillos,
Where I slept on the seashores of old Mexico.
After one long siesta, I came wide awake in the night.
I was startled by someone who shadowed the pale moonlight.
My new-found companion, one young senorita,
Who offered a broken hello,
To the gringo she found on the seashores of old Mexico.
She spoke of Sonora and swore that she'd never return,
For her Mexican husband, she really had no great concern.
'Cause she loved the gringo, my red hair and lingo:
That's all I needed to know.
Yeah, I found what I needed on the seashores of old Mexico.
Yeah, she loved the gringo, my red hair and lingo:
That's all I needed to know, ha, ha.
Yeah, I found what I needed on the seashores of old Mexico.
Instrumental fade.

A Sorta Fairytale

on my way up north
up on the ventura
i pulled back the hood
and i was talking to you
and i knew then it would be
a life long thing
but i didn't know that we
we could break a silver lining

and i'm so sad
like a good book
i can't put this day back
a sorta fairytale
with you
a sorta fairytale
with you

things you said that day
up on the 101
the girl had come undone
i tried to downplay it
with a bet about us
you said that-
you'd take it
as long as i could
i could not erase it

and i'm so sad
like a good book
i can't put this day back
a sorta fairytale
with you
a sorta fairytale
with you

and i ride along side
and i rode along side
you then
and i rode along side
till you lost me there
in the open road
and i rode along side
till the honey spread
itself so thin
for me to break your bread
for me to take your word
i had to steal it

and i'm so sad
like a good book
i can't put this day back
a sorta fairytale
with you
a sorta fairytale
with you

i could pick back up
whenever i feel

down new mexico way
something about
the open road
i knew that he was
looking for some indian blood and
find a little in you find a little
in me we may be
on this road but
we're just
impostors
in this country you know
so we go along and we said
we'd fake it
feel better with
oliver stone
till i
almost smacked him -
seemed right that night and
i don't know what
takes hold
out there in the
desert cold
these guys think they must
try and just get over on us

and i'm so sad
like a good book
i can't put this
day back
a sorta fairytale
with you
a sorta fairytale
with you

and i was ridin' by
ridin' along side
for a while till you lost me
and i was ridin' by
ridin' along till you lost me
till you lost
me in
the rear
view
you lost me
i said

way up north i took my day
all in all was a pretty nice
day and i put the hood
right back where
you could taste heaven
perfectly
feel out the summer breeze
didn't know when we'd be back
and i

Ride On

Its another lonely evening
And another lonely town
But I aint too young to worry
And I aint too old to cry
When a woman gets me down
Got another empty bottle
And another empty bed
Aint too young to admit it
And Im not too old to lie
Im just another empty head
Thats why Im lonely
Im so lonely
But I know what Im gonna do -
Im gonna ride on
Ride on
Ride on, standing on the edge of the road
Ride on, thumb in the air
Ride on, one of these days Im gonna
Ride on, change my evil ways
Till then Ill just keep dragging on
Broke another promise
And I broke another heart
But I aint too young to realize
That I aint too old to try
Try to get back to the start
And its another red light nightmare
Another red light street
And I aint too old to hurry
Cause I aint too old to die
But I sure am hard to beat
But Im lonely
Lord Im lonely
What am I gonna do -
Ride on
Ride on, got myself a one-way ticket
Ride on
Ride on, going the wrong way
Ride on, gonna change my evil ways
Ride on, one of these days
One of these days
Ride on
Ride on
Im gonna ride on
Ride on, looking for a truck
Ride on
Ride on, keep on riding
Riding on and on and on

Mexico

Way down here you need a reason to move
Feel a fool running your stateside games
Lose your load, leave your mind behind, baby james
Oh, mexico
It sounds so simple I just got to go
The suns so hot I forgot to go home
Guess Ill have to go now
Americano got the sleepy eye
But his bodys still shaking like a live wire
Sleepy seorita with the eyes on fire
Oh, mexico
It sounds so sweet with the sun sinking low
Moons so bright like to light up the night
Make everything all right
Babys hungry and the moneys all gone
The folks back home dont want to talk on the phone
She gets a long letter, sends back a postcard; times are hard
Oh, down in mexico
I never really been so I dont really know
Oh, mexico
I guess Ill have to go
Oh, mexico
I never really been but Id sure like to go
Oh, mexico
I guess Ill have to go now

Dont Let It Get You Down

Written by dewey bunnell, 1976
Found on hideaway.
Somebody told me that the time was right
To keep on ridin and to hang on tight
I heard the cry of a dog in the night
But nobody told me it would be all right
Dont let it get you down
But nobody make a sound
Dont let it get you down
We took a ride down a hill that night
The man was crazy but he wouldnt fight
With bullets in his back and money in a sack
We robbed a bank and we never looked back
Dont let it get you down
But nobody make a sound
Dont let it get you down
We took the bank, kept on runnin, but never too slow
The ride was fun and you know we went to mexico
But the action that felt all right
Still haunts me in the night
We took the bank, kept on runnin, but never too slow
The ride was fun and you know we went to mexico
But the action that felt all right
Still haunts me in the night, alright
Dont let it get you down
cause nobody made a sound
Dont let it get you down
Theyll be lucky if were ever found
Dont let it get you down (dont let it get you down)
Dont let it get you down (dont let it get you down)
Dont let it get you down (dont let it get you down)
Dont let it get you down (dont let it get you down) ...

El Paso

Out in the west texas town of el paso I fell in love with a mexican girl.
Nighttime would fine me in roses cantina,
Music would play and felina would whirl.
Black as the night were the eyes of felina,
Wicked and evil while casting a spell.
My love was strong for this mexican maiden,
I was in love, but in vain I could tell.
One night a wild young cowboy came in, wild as the west texas wind...
Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing,
With wicked felina, the girl that I love.
So in anger I challenged his right for the love of this maiden;
Down went his hand for the gun that he wore.
My challenge was answered, in less than a heartbeat
The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor.
Just for a moment I stood there in silence,
Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done.
Many thoughts ran through my mind as I stood there;
I had but one chance and that was to run.
Out through the back door of roses I ran, out where the horses were tied...
I picked a good one; he looked like he could run,
Up on his back and away I did ride.
Just as fast as I could from the west texas town of el paso,
Out thru the badlands of new mexico.
Back in el paso my life would be worthless;
Everythings gone in life nothing is left.
But its been so long since Ive seen the young maiden,
My love is stronger that my fear of death.
I saddled up and away I did go, riding alone in the dark...
Maybe tomorrow a bullet may find me,
Tonight nothings worse than this pain in my heart.
And as last here I am on the hill overlooking el paso,
I can see roses cantina below.
My love is strong and it pushes me onward, down off the hill to felina I go.
Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys,
Off to my left ride a dozen or more.
Shouting and shooting; I cant let them catch me,
Ive got to make it to roses back door.
Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel a deep burning pain in my
Its getting harder to stay in the saddle.
Im getting weary, unable to ride.
But my love for felina is strong and I rise where Ive fallen;
Though I am weary, I cant stop to rest.
I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle,
I feel the bullet go deep in my chest.
From out of nowhere, felina has found me,
Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side.
Cradled by two loving arms that Ill die for,
One little kiss and felina good-bye.

They All Went To Mexico

Wheres my pal, wheres my friend
All good things must have an end
Sad things and nothings
On and on they go
I guess he went to mexico
Chorus:
They all went to mexico
Buenas dias, got to go
Tengo que obedecer
Mi corazon
They all went to mexico
Wheres my mule, wheres my dray
Straw hats packed up and gone
Away
Mule dont go north and dray go slow
They both went to mexico
Wheres my sweetie, wheres the face
That lit dark corners every place
She put up with me long time you know
And then she had to go to mexico
Chorus
Wheres my brown dog, wheres my hound
He liked my truck he hung around
But hes a canine romeo
And I guess he went to mexico
Wheres that woman so sweet, so mean
Her heart was cautious her mind was keen
She was always looking for the peccadillo
I hope she went to mexico
Chorus
Wheres decembers happy crew
With german bikes and sidecars too
They take the truck south to st. louis, mo
Motorcycle all the way to mexico
Wheres my luck, wheres my grace
Has it all been just a foolish chase
Every time I hear that rainy chill wind blow
I think it might be time to head to mexico

Red BMX Bicycle

There was a small boy
In the countryside
Who had a small red BMX bicycle
Kept in the store besides the herbicides
Every evening like a cycle
He would ride down the dusty road
The sun a yellow ball
on the west side
Glittering under the sun`s rays
Was that small
RED BMX BICYCLE
There was a smaller boy
In the countryside
Who had nothing…
Totally nothing
He was a friend to the small boy
Every evening like a cycle
He would wait by the dusty road
To have a chance
On the small red BMX bicycle
His face would be all smiles
Even after falling off that
RED BMX BICYCLE
One day at dusk
The smaller boy
Stood next to the small boy
And asked
“When you grow up, would you give me this bike? ”
The small boy without thinking
Said YES..
There was a smaller boy
In the countryside
One night
He had a bad stomach ache
His mum wiping the tiny streams of tears
That fell from his small face
That was pale…
Due to dust from the dusty road
As he played with his the small boy
And rode on that
RED BMX BICYCLE
There was a small boy
In the countryside…
Now HE is all grown
And in the university
Far away in the city
That RED BMX BICYCLE
Now long gone
Given to some relative, I guess
If I could go back
To those days…
Those days with beautiful sunsets
Back in the countryside
Waiting for my chance
On my red BMX bicycle
Watching that smaller boy fall off
I would give him…
I would hand him that bicycle
And never expect it back
And watch him ride
Towards the beautiful sunset
On my red BMX bicycle
But if I can go back
All will be in vain
Because on that night…in the dark
He struggled with pain
His small heart couldn`t keep on
Outside there was rain
The gods possibly wanted to cleanse
All the evil that night
That took him away
Now I reminisce
As I keep moving on
About that smaller boy
And our small
RED BMX BICYCLE…

One Short Story

He was a boy
Who felt like a man
She was a girl
From a far away land
Far more beautiful
Than the picture in his hand
She had eyes
That would draw him in
They took a plane ride
Together they would find
Her long lost smile
They went home again
Back to her friends
Back to repair her heart
He loved this girl
With all of his heart
He wanted her mind
Her secrets and her trust
She would never do him any harm
He'd give her the world
If it sat in his palm
One rainy day
It was dark in the sky
She turned and she said to him
With grey in her eyes
Go home again
Go back to your friends
Go back and repair your heart
Go home again
Go back to your friends
Go back and repair your heart
His heart turned to liquid
And it trickled from his eyes
All he could do now
At this point in his life
Was to go home again
Back to his friends
Back to repair his heart
Go home again
Go back to your friends
Go back and repair your heart

The Price You Pay

You make up your mind, you choose the chance you take
You ride to where the highway ends and the desert breaks
Out on to an open road you ride until the day
You learn to sleep at night with the price you pay
Now with their hands held high, they reached out for the open skies
And in one last breath they built the roads theyd ride to their death
Driving on through the night, unable to break away
From the restless pull of the price you pay
(chorus)
Oh, the price you pay, oh, the price you pay
Now you cant walk away from the price you pay
Now theyd come so far and theyd waited so long
Just to end up caught in a dream where everything goes wrong
Where the dark of night holds back the light of day
And youve gotta stand and fight for the price you pay
(chorus)
Little girl down on the strand
With that pretty little baby in your hands
Do you remember the story of the promised land
How he crossed the desert sands
And could not enter the chosen land
On the banks of the river he stayed
To face the price you pay
So let the games start, you better run you little wild heart
You can run through all the nights and all the days
But just across the county line, a stranger passing through put up a sign
That counts the men fallen away to the price you pay,
And girl before the end of the day,
Im gonna tear it down and throw it away

Its Ok

Fun is in
Its no sin
Its that time again
To shed your load
Hit the road
On the run again
Summer skies
In our eyes
And a warmer sun
Its one for all
All for one
All for all out fun
Gotta go to it
Gonna go through it
Gotta get with it
Lookin good
Down the hood
Of a funky ride
On the way
To the tide
Just to tan your hide
In the shade
Lemonade
In the sun ocean spray
To get your face
In the race
Or lay backs no disgrace
Gotta go to it
Gonna go through it
Gotta get with it
Its ok to get out there and
Have some fun
By yourself maybe
Or else with a special one.
Good or bad
Glad or sad
Its all gonna pass
So its ok
Lets all play
And enjoy it while it lasts
Gotta go to it
Gonna go through it
Gotta get with it
Find a ride
Find a ride

Take Me Back

(billy cross)
Producer for bonnie: jim steinman
You said its over now
Its just not right
You said theres a better place for you to be
Its not with me
Then you turned and walked away
I cant believe what I see
And I cant go to sleep at night when I think of how it used to be
She cant give you what Ive got
And she cant stop your pain
And she cant love you the way I do
God I want you back again
Maybe she could try with money
Or she could buy you clothes
But baby when its dark and youre home at night
Does she ever hold you close
She takes you out in style
She treats you right
She gives you all the things I never could, shes so good
But dont you think of me
Baby late at night
And I just cant take it boy, together we could be so right
She cant give you what Ive got
And she cant stop your pain
And she cant love you the way I do
God I want you back again
Maybe she could try with money
Or she could buy you clothes
But baby when its dark and youre home at night
Does she ever hold you close
Take me back
(ooh youre gonna need me)
(ooh youre gonna need me)
Take me back
(ooh youre gonna need me)
All those things we did before
Whatever happened to them
And all those things Ive been living for
Gotta start em all over again
You said it couldnt last
That we were meant to part
A guy like you and a girl like me didnt stand a chance - not from the start
But then you looked at me
I had to ask you why
As I see and try to find out why you left me for those hungry eyes
She cant give you what Ive got
And she cant stop your pain
And she cant love you the way I do
God I want you back again
Maybe she could try with money
Or she could buy you clothes
But baby when its dark and youre home at night
Does she ever hold you close
Take me back
Ooh youre gonna take me
Take me back
Ooh youre gonna take me
Take me back
Ooh youre gonna take me
Take me back...

Let Me Ride

Ive been on the road now for a day and a night
Ive been lonesome and hungry for miles
Ive seen how you people been lookin your lies
Im gonna kill yall with your own smiles
But I wish that yall could get a look at the news
And see what the mans puttin down
Well I gotta hold a one yesterday night
And they threw me outta this town, oh yeah
Well its gonna be awhile before I get home
But when I do thats the end of my roamin
Cause Ive been gone a lifetime and I cant believe
That the people I trust still can deceive
By the time I get back here things have to change
Cause if they dont theres gonna be alot of strange
Lookin people marchin round, clappin their hands
And they wont stop till everyone understands
Oh yeah
Let me ride, let me ride
Let me ride now, let me ride now, yeah
Livins just like sleepin
Why is life not like a dream
Now the dawn is weepin
Another sunlight sees
Oh Ive been here too long now
I got to go outside
Ya people gotta let me ride
Let me ride, ride, ride
I got to feel free inside (4x)
(solo)
Ya people gotta let me ride
Let me ride, ride, ride
I gotta feel free inside (4x)

Mexico

By: james taylor
1975
Way down here
Ou need a reason to move
Feel a fool
Running your stateside games
Lose your load
Leave your mind behind
Baby, james
Oooh, mexico
It sounds so simple
I just got to go
The suns so hot
I forgot to go home
I guess Ill have to go now
Americanos got the sleepy eyes
But his bodys still shakin like a live wire
Senorita with her eyes on fire
Dont you know
Oooh, mexico
It sounds so sweet
With the sun sinkin low
The moons so bright
Likes to light up the night
Make everything alright.
Babys hungry and the moneys all gone
The folks back home
Dont want to talk on the phone
She gets a long letter
And sends back a postcard
Times are hard.
Ooohh, down in mexico
Ive never really been
So I dont really know
Oooooh, mexico
I guess Ill have to go now.
Oooh, mexico
Ive never really been
But, Id sure like to go
Whoa, oooh mexico
I guess Ill have to go now.
Talkin bout mexico (mexico)
Little honkeytonk out in mexico (mexico)
South of margaritaville
Ive been told
Spoken:
(? )undele, undele, vaminos
Ahh, yeah, lets load this cast of characters
On that boat and head south
Ahh, yeah we got a wind at our back
Smooth sailin all the way
We got old nordstrom, hes our chef
Hes down in that galley cookin up a
Barometer soup for us
We gotta stop at our offshore bank of bad habits
And make a deposit or a withdrawl
I dont know which one, yknow
Were goin down to the land of the mayans
Eah, they were here long before the cavemen were
Cavemen in blue jeans
Uhh, excuse me, thats not politically correct
Thats cavepersons in blue jeans
Skip wiley and skink, we may run into them
Up to no good down there
Watch out for those barefoot children
Stompin around in those puddles
Ahh, yeah, and that remittance man
Hes just goin round and round
He may run into ol frank bama
Cruisin around in the hemisphere dancer
I dont know, I might have my long board down there...

O Mexico

(written by michael g. joyce, irene kelley)
Im catchin this south bound train
Ive had enough of the pouring rain
Chilled to the bone, I have to go
Love was never a friend of mine
The only friend that I have is time
Its down the track, aint lookin back
Mexico, o mexico
I long to see your border town
Mexico, o mexico
Adios mi corazon
The cars are clickin the night along
But all I hear is a heartbreak song
Haunting me, relentlessly
Come the morning and I will stand
On the banks of the rio grande
A brand new day, wash those tears away
Theres nothin like the feel
Of the steel against the steel
And you cant forget the crying of the rail
Theres nothin like the sight
Of a moonlit desert night
To heal a broken heart that was so frail
