Major Bellenden's Song
And what though winter will pinch severe
Through locks of grey and a cloak that's old?
Yet keep up thy heart, bold cavalier,
For a cup of sack shall fence the cold.
For time will rust the brightest blade,
And years will break the strongest bow;
Was ever wight so starkly made,
But time and years would overthrow?

Something New
things are meant not to last
there is always the right time for them to break
into pieces and no matter how we piece them together
they still shatter
like telling you that they are meant to go, to be broken, to be thrown away
a lap top has a time frame of its own
the virus come in waiting and then all of its essence is gone
you weep for things?
don't. They do not weep for you. You are sad when they break? Don't
They don't feel anything at all for you.
a car for twelve years is not your car anymore
the chassis simply take in rust and some wires get meshed up
with tantrums and like nerves they too go awry and die
malfunction so to say from the language of things and tools
now, we see each other. I am human. I am not a piece, a thing.
I am not a car. I am not a lap top with a time frame
for its breaking
a time for throwing and trading-in
a time simply for replacing
Look at me. I have tears. My skin bleeds when you hurt me.
My heart beats faster when you kiss me.
As we throw away what we do not need now
After all the years of keeping, we reflect.
I have this heart that beats for you. I have time outside the frame
of utility. We grow. We commit. We savor. We are present.
For twelve years now, You will always be someone new.
Let the sun shine. Let the heart beat for a new meaning. Love.

For E. McC
Gone while your tastes were keen to you,
Gone where the grey winds call to you,
By that high fencer, even Death,
Struck of the blade that no man parrieth;
Such is your fence, one saith,
One that hath known you.
Drew you your sword most gallantly
Made you your pass most valiantly
'Gainst that grey fencer, even Death.
Gone as a gust of breath
Faith! no man tarrieth,
‘Se il cor ti manca,’ but it failed thee not!
'Non ti fidar,’ it is the sword that speaks
‘In me.’
Thou trusted'st in thyself and met the blade
'Thout mask or gauntlet, and art laid
As memorable broken blades that be
Kept as bold trophies of old pageantry.
As old Toledos past their days of war
Are kept mnemonic of the strokes they bore,
So art thou with us, being good to keep
In our heart's sword-rack, though thy sword-arm sleep.
ENVOI
Struck of the blade that no man parrieth
Pierced of the point that toucheth lastly all,
'Gainst that grey fencer, even Death,
Behold the shield! He shall not take thee all.

Significance, winter, November, unfold, union, bay, seemly, sky
Significance, winter, November, unfold, union, bay, seemly, sky
Winter grey has set in
And its November 7th
The skies are too light to early
They are merely and extension of this grey
Upon my rising
The bay is grey the sky and its meeting are one
They are a union
Announcing
Significance
A statement of fullness
It is the linger of these many long months
As they unfold
First fall
Honoring us with its ways of
Offering difference, warm to cold days
Rain
Ice
Sleet
Then snow, then winter
Cold
Bitter brilliance
My afternoon drink is not a warm one
My wandering come with wearing sweaters
And scarves
I for the first time actually see the
Winter coming in over the gulf coast
Unlike in the years past where it was all
Seemly a summer vacation

Ten Grey hairs and a silver one
I discovered my first grey hair
when I was Seventeen years old
It had to do with broken up my first relationship
I discovered my second grey hair
when I was Twenty years old
It had to do with the quarrels at home
I discovered my third grey hair
when I was Twenty-one years old
It had to do with searching for work
I discovered my fourth grey hair
when I was Twenty-three years old
It had to do with loosing my job
I discovered my fifth grey hair
when I was Twenty-five years old
It had to do with giving up my unborn child
I discovered my sixth grey hair
When I was Twenty-eight years old
It had to do with opening my pub
I discovered my seventh grey hair
When I was thirty years old
It had to do with giving birth to my daughter
I discovered my eight grey hair
When I was thirty –two years old
It had to do with the first day at the kinder garden school
I discovered my ninth grey hair
When I was thirty-four years old
It had to do with to find out that some thing was missing
I discovered my tenth grey hair
When I was thirty-five years old
It had to do with the fights between my sisters and mum
My one Silver hair I discovered lately
Has to do with you
Because I miss you so hard …

Is It Time
Is it time...
To pay attention to a ticking clock.
Is it time...
Is it,
To stop and listen.
To what's been missing.
Is it time...
To open a door that locks.
Is it time...
To come out of a box.
Is it time...
For intervention.
With a pinch!
'OW.'
Is it time...
To fix what's missing.
Is it time...
To hear that ticking,
Is it time...
To stop all foolishness,
And distance from this quick.
Or is there time,
To fix what's missing.
Is it time...
To stop all foolishness,
And distance from it quick.
'Ow.'
Just want to give a little pinch,
To make sure you feel the intent.
'Ow.'
Just want to give a little pinch,
To make sure you feel the intent.
'Ow.'
Just want to give a little pinch...
To make sure you are there,
And aware...
Of the time!
Just want to give a little pinch,
To make sure you feel the intent.
'Ow.'
Just want to give a little pinch...
To make sure you are there,
And aware...
Of the time!
'Is it time? '
What do you think?
Nevermind.

Renouveau. (From The French)
Now Time throws off his cloak again
Of ermined frost, and cold and rain,
And clothes him in the embroidery
Of glittering son and clear blue sky.
With beast and bird the forest rings,
Each in his jargon cries or sings;
And Time throws off his cloak again
Of ermined frost, and cold and rain.
River, and fount, and tinkling brook
Wear in their dainty livery
Drops of silver jewelry;
In new-made suit they merry look;
And Time throws off his cloak again
Of ermined frost, and cold and rain.

Sack Full Of Stones
(Travis Tritt/Marty Stuart)
I used to be the kind of guy
I could laugh as well as cry
With a heart feather-soft and summer-warm
Since you've left me I've been faced
With emptiness that's been replaced
With a heart that's hard and heavy as a sack full of stones
I never thought I'd ever see
The man my mirror is showing me
Lord I must have aged ten years
Since you've been gone
The longest mile you'll ever crawl
Is the one after you fall
Draggin' around a heart that's heavy as a sack full of stones
With the world upon my shoulders
And my feelings on my sleeve
Every time I close my eyes at night
All I do is watch you leave
But by far the biggest curse of being left alone
Is draggin' around a heart that's heavy as a sack full of stones
Well I tried turning to a bottle
But the bottle turned on me
I've tried everything
But nothing sets your memory free
I'm serving life here in a prison
That we once called a home
With a heart that's cold and heavy as a sack full of stones
With the world upon my shoulders
And my feelings on my sleeve
Every time I close my eyes at night
All I do is watch you leave
But by far the biggest curse of being left alone
Is draggin' around a heart that's heavy as a sack full of stones
Yes by far the biggest curse of being left alone
Is draggin' around a heart that's heavy as a sack full of stones

Time passes too quickly
I feel winter’s first cold fingers touching
and time flash by to quickly
as if the last years are waiting on me
and I button my jacket tighter
and know I really need a proper coat
that can rid me of the cold.
I feel winter’s first cold fingers touching
and time passes too quickly
and I wonder where I fit into it all
and everything is different from what it once was
and things have gotten other and new meanings
and I am tired of struggling against life
and I feel my winter’s first cold fingers touching me.

A Heart In Winter
A lonely and troubled heart
Crying for love from another
Trying to love another
A heart that suffers within
So cold than the iced mountains
Without a melt from the sun that shines during summer
A heart that finds no rest
Temptation is it's source
Deep pain and deep sorrow a heart lives with
It's not all about cold, but cold love
A heart that needs warm love to comfort
Years leaps over still a heart is the same
A heart of pain and depression
A heart in winter time.

Consider
Consider
The lilies of the field whose bloom is brief:—
We are as they;
Like them we fade away,
As doth a leaf.
Consider
The sparrows of the air of small account:
Our God doth view
Whether they fall or mount,—
He guards us too.
Consider
The lilies that do neither spin nor toil,
Yet are most fair:—
What profits all this care
And all this coil?
Consider
The birds that have no barn nor harvest-weeks;
God gives them food:—
Much more our Father seeks
To do us good.
Helen Grey
Because one loves you, Helen Grey,
Is that a reason you should pout,
And like a March wind veer about,
And frown, and say your shrewish say?
Don't strain the cord until it snaps,
Don't split the sound heart with your wedge,
Don't cut your fingers with the edge
Of your keen wit; you may, perhaps.
Because you're handsome, Helen Grey,
Is that a reason to be proud?
Your eyes are bold, your laugh is loud,
Your steps go mincing on their way;
But so you miss that modest charm
Which is the surest charm of all:
Take heed, you yet may trip and fall,
And no man care to stretch his arm.
Stoop from your cold height, Helen Grey,
Come down, and take a lowlier place;
Come down, to fill it now with grace;
Come down you must perforce some day:
For years cannot be kept at bay,
And fading years will make you old;
Then in their turn will men seem cold,
When you yourself are nipped and grey.

Hide From Time
(S.Carter K.J.Garside)
Inside her tower she feels free from harm,
I'll lock her up inside safe and warm,
She'll sleep for winter she'll sleep for years,
The garden's overgrown over her tears.
Hide from time,
Hide from time.
Grow the garden year after year,
The roots dug deep she won't be found down here,
Brambles thorns will keep the boys away hey hey,
She needs her sleep she won't play today.
Hide from time,
Hide from time.
I'll keep her heart I'll keep it in one piece,
I'll be with her through years and years of sleep,
I'll make this moment last I'll beat time,
I'll be with her forever make her mine.
Hide from time,
Hide from time.

Tonic
Bright sunshine on a winter’s day
is caught and held by naked trees.
Where light and shadow interplay,
like memories which fade away.
As quickly passing years erase
the glory of our younger days.
In youthful years of innocence.
Bright sunshine on a winter’s day,
dispensed by kindly providence.
Softened the sombre shades of grey
with subtle hints and shades of gold
Our winter weary eyes behold.
As we grow up and make our way
from childhood to maturity.
Bright sunshine on a winter’s day
still offers us the surety.
That winter is not permanent
in course of time it must relent.
A fact that cannot be gainsaid.
Which tells us spring is on the way
a sign of better times ahead
Bright sunshine on a winter’s day
Can send the spirits soaring high
to meet the brightness in the sky.

The Old Scotish Cavalier
I.
Come listen to another song,
Should make your heart beat high,
Bring crimson to your forehead,
And the lustre to your eye;-
It is a song of olden time,
Of days long since gone by,
And of a Baron stout and bold
As e'er wore sword on thigh!
Like a brave old Scottish cavalier,
All of the olden time!
II.
He kept his castle in the north,
Hard by the thundering Spey;
And a thousand vassals dwelt around
All of his kindred they.
And not a man of all that clan
Had ever ceased to pray
For the Royal race they loved so well,
Though exiled far away
From the steadfast Scottish cavaliers,
All of the olden time!
III.
His father drew the righteous sword
For Scotland and her claims,
Among the loyal gentlemen
And chiefs of ancient names
Who swore to fight or fall beneath
The standard of King James,
And died at Killiecrankie pass
With the glory of the Graemes;
Like a true old Scottish cavalier,
All of the olden time!
IV.
He never owned the foreign rule,
No master he obeyed,
But kept his clan in peace at home,
From foray and from raid;
And when they asked him for his oath,
He touched his glittering blade,
And pointed to his bonnet blue,
That bore the white cockade:
Like a leal old Scottish cavalier,
All of the olden time!
V.
At length the news ran through the land-
THE PRINCE had come again!
That night the fiery cross was sped
O'er mountain and through glen;
And our old Baron rose in might,
Like a lion from his den,
And rode away across the hills
To Charlie and his men,
With the valiant Scottish cavaliers,
All of the olden time!
VI.
He was the first that bent the knee
When the STANDARD waved abroad,
He was the first that charged the foe
On Preston's bloody sod;
And ever, in the van of fight,
The foremost still he trod,
Until, on bleak Culloden's heath,
He gave his soul to God,
Like a good old Scottish cavalier,
All of the olden time!
VII.
Oh! never shall we know again
A heart so stout and true-
The olden times have passed away,
And weary are the new:
The fair White Rose has faded
From the garden where it grew,
And no fond tears save those of heaven
The glorious bed bedew
Of the last old Scottish cavalier,
All of the olden time!

Then What?
When two no longer share from day to day
love set to span eternal rainbow years,
encounter prematurely hell's harsh way
when, unprepared, warmth wanes in winter’s tears,
when morn lights up wan mourning heart apart,
when cold creeps irrespective of bright ray,
when what was wed is sudden torn apart,
when was was said can’t be explained away,
when Past’s outcast, when there’s no second start,
when all horizons darken into one,
when time’s conveyed on sodden tumbrel cart,
warp weft reft patterns warped, thread dead, undone,
when, where two played, one, sad, remains, cheeks grey -
what then … when there is nothing more to say?

Then What?
When two no longer share from day to day
love that should have spanned the rainbow of the years,
prepared hell prematurely in their way,
as when warmth meets with Winter’s frosty tears,
when dawn lights up a mourning heart apart,
when cold creeps up regardless of bright ray,
when what was wed is sudden torn apart,
when was was said can’t be explained away,
when Past’s outcast, when there’s no second start,
when all horizons darken into one,
when time’s conveyed upon a tumbril cart,
when warp and weft and pattern are undone,
when where two played but one remains, cheeks grey, -
what then, … when there is nothing more to say?

Bladed
Bladed
How dull is the knife wielded in passion's ire
which lands that menacing blow
where the bad time amplifies
tragedy's plateau
and wounds grow with time.
Things small
sometimes sting the most
tiny cuts which swell despite the years
And we allow them so
because their very smallness ires us so
we see they were avoidable
yet
that blade sliced thin slivers
which in time became infected
A cannon wound more understandable
because unpreventable
but lover's cold eye
lands blows unshielded
from that blade's edge
which slices easier
over quivering heart tissue.
Small lesions
old and new
I now surrender
by Will
and vanish them
begrudgingly
for they have pride's gauze
and memory for bandages.
Let me give them up
heroically as I do
for they are wounds of mine
and mask that we two
are one.

The Box
This poem was first released on the poems, prayers and promises album. it is the only album it has been released on.
Once upon a time in the land of hushabye
Around about the wondrous days of yore
I came across a sort of box
Bound up with chains and locked with locks
And labelled kindly do not touch, its war
Decree was issued round about
All with a flourish and a shout
And a gaily coloured mascot tripping lightly on before
Dont fiddle with this deadly box or break the chains or pick the locks
And please, dont ever play about with war
Well, the children understood
Children happen to be good
They were just as good around the time of yaw
They didnt try to pick the locks, or break into that deadly box
They never tried to play about with war
Mummies didnt either
Sisters, aunts, grannies neither
Cause they were quiet and sweet and pretty in those wondrous days of yaw
Well, very much the same as now, not the ones to blame somehow
For opening up that deadly box of war
But someone did
Someone battered in the lid
And spilled the insides out across the floor
A sort of bouncy, bumpy ball made up of guns and flags and all the tears and horror and the death that goes with war
It bounced right out
And went bashing all about
And bumping into everything and stored
And what was sad and most unfair is that it didnt seem to care who much it bumped
Or why, or what, or for
It bumped the children mainly
And Ill tell you this quite plainly
It bumps them every day, and more and more, and leaves them dead and burned and dying
Thousands of them sick and crying
Cause when it bumps, its really very sore
Now theres a way to stop the ball
It isnt difficult at all
All it takes is wisdom, Im absolutely sure that we could get it back into the box
And buy the chains and lock the locks
No one seems to want to save the children any more
Well, thats the way it all appears
Cause its been bouncing round for years and years
In spite of all the wisdom wiz since those wondrous days of yaw
And the time they came across the box
Bound up with chains and locked with locks
And labelled kindly do not touch, its war

Final Attraction
Well, here you are, the final attraction
Awaiting direction
>From somewhere above
Your finest performance
Approaching perfection
I know what you're making
It's some kind of love
Somewhere in your lifetime
You were dared into feeling
So many emotions that tear you apart
But they loved you so badly
For sharin' their sorrow
So pick up that guitar
And go break a heart
You can do it one more time, son, we're with ya
Pick up that guitar
Go break a heart
You can do it this time just for Hank Williams, can't ya?
Go break a heart
Maybe one time for Otis Redding
Go break a heart
And one time for Janis Joplin
Yeah, that's right. Go break a heart

Heart Dont Break Tonight
Lying in the dark tonight
Lying here alone
Trying to figure out tonight
Where it is Ive gone
Lately I dont understand
Some feelings that I have
Even on the brightest days
I dont know why Im sad
Sometimes when the night is still
I start to fall apart
Heart dont break tonight
Give me a little more time
Please dont let me down
cause I cant stand the sound
Heart dont break tonight
Listening to the cars go by
On the boulevard
Wondering as Im lying here
Why the nights so hard
I close my eyes and see you
The way you used to be
But right now all that I can do
Is just hold on to me
Sometimes when the night is still
I start to fall apart
Heart dont break tonight
Give me a little more time
Please dont let me down
cause I cant stand the sound
Heart dont break tonight
I watch the lights dance on the wall
As another car goes by
I realize how quickly things can change
Sometimes when the night is still
I start to fall apart
Heart dont break tonight
Give me a little more time
Please dont let me down
cause I cant stand the sound
Heart dont break tonight
Heart dont break tonight
Give me a little more time
Heart dont break tonight
Give me a little more time
Heart dont break tonight
Give me a little more time
