Seventeen
One day I met you at the fair
You wore a leather jacket and your Viking hair
Was blown into tangles by the autumn wind
And you looked at me with a sexy grin
As usual you had come alone
You smelled like musk and your Doc's Marten's shone
Then you greeted me with a lustful kiss
Saying 'Be right back, I gotta piss'
So I shrugged my shoulders and I breathed a sigh
You were always too honest and I was shy
Thinking 'Man, oh man, opposites DO attract'
Wishing you'd hurry up and be right back
And the dim lights flashed on the carnival rides
And the smell of food was strong and fried
Returning, you pinched me on the butt
Then you nuggied my head like a crazy nut
And we walked around till we came to a stand
That sold Heineken in glass or cans
And for three Deutch marks we got drunk obscene
When one beers all it took 'cause you're seventeen
Then we saw your brother on the bumper cars
Laughing up a storm as the twinkling stars
Were more luminous than they had ever been
Before that night or ever since
Then when no one was looking we snuck around
Where they hid all the wires that layed on the ground
And you took my face in your boyish hands
Saying 'Come with me to my Stairwell Land'
'And I'll lay down a blanket or sleeping bag
I'll smoke a joint and you a fag
And we'll makeout on the balcony
Till the sun comes up, or you have to leave'
The football field was down below
The chalk lines dirty against the glow
Of the full moon hanging in the Heidelberg sky
Where teenage love was drawing nigh
And we kissed and we cuddled never doing the deed
Cause I was a virgin and you were not keen
On messing things up by a physical thing
When our feelings meant more than a casual fling
And the hours went by at hyperspeed
When your mother came in saying 'Quarter to three? ! '
And the front door closed with it's German lock
To my own stairwell alone I walked
Into the bedroom where I lived in peace
Was the place I went and confusion ceased
While my parents quarrelled in the living room
Always chiding each other and full of gloom
On that night I swore right there and then
I would never EVER be like them
'Cause that night was like a swift vaccine
But what is love when youre seventeen?

The Screamy Meanies
Each night the screamy meanies come
To kick me wide awake
They spit on me and yank my hair
Poke me with three pronged stakes
They torment without mercy
Till I’m drenched in my own sweat
They think it’s rather funny
And they live under my bed
One’s name is Anorexia
One’s name is Latex Sex
One’s name is You’re a Loser and one’s
Pills That You Ingest
One’s You’re a Dirty Liar and one’s
Your Extremely Vain
One’s You Like to Play with Fire
Till it Burns you With it's Flame
One’s You Should Read Your Bible More
One’s You Are Such a Fool
The One whose names Judgmental
Thinks he’s consummately cool
They all are very vengeful
And none of them are the same
Thank God in a few hours they
Go back from whence they came

Seventeen
Late last night
I get a call from a so-called friend
He wouldnt give his name
Says he saw you with another man
Feels like seventeen years
Its only seventeen days
Since I saw the real you
And I let you walk away
You left me broken
You left me stranded
The way you play this game of love
Its just plain underhanded
I spent a lot of time
And I spent all my money
Dont want no other fool
To put his hands on you
Who you been talkin to?
Yeah who you been walkin with?
Seventeen, youre just seventeen
Seventeen
They said I was playin with fire
I knew I had to take a chance
I had to take you higher
To a new experience
But little did I know
Id never get that far
Girl, you know you put on quite a show
Youre gonna be a star
When you grow older, girl
Youll remember I told you, girl
Seventeen, youre just seventeen
Seventeen, seventeen
Seventeen, youre just seventeen
Seventeen, seventeen
Seventeen, youre only seventeen
Seventeen, seventeen

The Spillway
I drove down to the lake today
Where the water flowed in through the old spillway
Lazy and bored I figured I'd just sit
Drink a beer or two and daydream a bit
I parked right next to a gnarled oak tree
In solitude where I wanted to be
Eighty eight point five played my favorite songs
I couldn't help myself so I sang along
Till I had a fancy to explore
I opened up the rusty blue Dodge Ram door
All bundled tight in my wool poncho
I stepped out the truck into ten below
Where the Permian red mud squished beneath my boots
Onto the flat full of geese and coots
The sky was depressing, dark and grey
Like you'd expect it to be on a funeral day
But I hadn't gone there to sulk or brood
Watching water fill the lake is always good
I walked a fair distance to the northeast side
Skipped a few rocks on the by and by
And just when I was sure that I was all alone
Up comes a hobo with a mangy redbone
I could tell by the look in his careful eye
That he was just as scared of me as to him was I
I put out my hand to introduce myself
Saying 'What's with the weather? It's cold as hell! '
He, 'That's a contradiction. It's about to snow'
Me, 'Yes, no, maybe and I just don't know'
He told me then that his name was Sam
He was down on his luck but not on the flim flam
And trusting I reached to scratch the red dog's ears
Something telling me there was nothing to fear
And Sam and I walked in unison
He did most of the talkin; me the listening
He pointed to a place in a far off nook
Where his tent was hid away in a secret crook
Sam said, 'It isn't much, but I call it home'
'I've gotta can o' beans and some stale corn pone'
So we sat on the ground and I lit a match
The wood smoke smell from the campfire patch
Making me think it was more of God's plan
That led me here to this homeless man
And together we ate with some plastic spoons
Chatting back and forth till way past noon
When my watch chime signaled it was time to go
To walk back to the spillway where the water flowed
Where Sam was my brother for one crazy day
Though I doubt there's a chance I'll ever see him again

Musclebound
Were building fires that will burn until morning
The smell of books and hot stone surround us
Tough is the leather that strapped to my skin
Strong are the bonds that we make
We feel the steam as it rises around us
Up from the soil that is cracking its back
Tough is the leather that strapped to my skin
Strong are the bonds that sing
Work till youre musclebound all night long
Work till youre musclebound all night long
Gotta work till youre musclebound all night long
Gotta work till youre musclebound all night long
Were building fires that will burn until morning
The smell of books and hot stone surround us
Tough is the leather that strapped to my skin
Strong are the bonds that we make
To hear a pulsing from chanter to mountain
Down through the vein and into the grain
Strong is the shoulder that moves to the time
Here is the land it can break
Work till youre musclebound all night long
Work till youre musclebound all night long
Gotta work till youre musclebound all night long
Gotta work till youre musclebound all night long

Let Me Come Home
I left you there, strong and sturdy
Lights turned on and heat cranked up
Closed your door, to take a tour
With the girl I love so much
I traded my home for another that night
And although it was brief
Someone decided that for that night
I should feel grief
I took my leave from my girlfriend
(my home from home)
To travel back to where I left you
With lights turned on and heat cranked up
I desired your physical feeling and glow
And so I walked…
“A mile” I said “It will not be so bad”
But little did I know
Of what I did not have
“MY KEY” I gasped
I forgot it in your depths
While I walked towards you
I did not know if you’d let me rest
I tried to think of your unclosed door
Welcoming on in
And so I chanted in the late night din…
Please let me come home
I pray and ask and plead for home
I need, and desire, and glorify you home
I asked and was given a crack in the door
You let me come home.

Alive And Killing
I once knew this boy
Who was in his teens,
A dog tag around his neck
A pair of low waist jeans
A ragged shirt, streaked hair
Branded shoes, the thuggish stare
It all fitted him very well
Yet his darkest secret he would never tell.
There was one little piece
The jigsaw was missing
That one thing that seemed out of place
That one thing that didn't fit in.
He had everything,
Yet he seemed depressed
'Is it your marks? Your studies? '
'Why are you looking so stressed? '
His parents would give him
Everything he needed and more
Yet his wasn’t as bright
As the clothes he wore
He was always missing from class and home alike
No one knew where he went
Except his little brother
He had followed him that day
To see where he went alone
He followed him to a house
He followed him back home
He saw what his brother did
He saw his brothers near death
He knew he had to stop him
He would fight till his final breath
Seven years of mystery
Was uncovered that day
But only his brother knew
When his motionless brother lay
His brother was dead
Dead of drugs
That seventeen year old
Had been dealing with thugs
The brother didn’t reveal
The information he had
He knew his brother wasn’t the only one
What he knew was driving him mad
He was going to do something
About these killing things
Going to take action
Going to spread out his wings
He was only thirteen
What could he do?
Nothing was in his hands
That he knew
Then he decided to take his stand
For his brothers sake and all like him
He knew what power lay in his hands
He knew how he could inspire a change
He knew precisely what he had to do
He walked to his brother’s room
And picked up his pen
And with a firm mind
And an urge to make a difference
He began to write....
Alive and killing.

Take Me Back
(billy cross)
Producer for bonnie: jim steinman
You said its over now
Its just not right
You said theres a better place for you to be
Its not with me
Then you turned and walked away
I cant believe what I see
And I cant go to sleep at night when I think of how it used to be
She cant give you what Ive got
And she cant stop your pain
And she cant love you the way I do
God I want you back again
Maybe she could try with money
Or she could buy you clothes
But baby when its dark and youre home at night
Does she ever hold you close
She takes you out in style
She treats you right
She gives you all the things I never could, shes so good
But dont you think of me
Baby late at night
And I just cant take it boy, together we could be so right
She cant give you what Ive got
And she cant stop your pain
And she cant love you the way I do
God I want you back again
Maybe she could try with money
Or she could buy you clothes
But baby when its dark and youre home at night
Does she ever hold you close
Take me back
(ooh youre gonna need me)
(ooh youre gonna need me)
Take me back
(ooh youre gonna need me)
All those things we did before
Whatever happened to them
And all those things Ive been living for
Gotta start em all over again
You said it couldnt last
That we were meant to part
A guy like you and a girl like me didnt stand a chance - not from the start
But then you looked at me
I had to ask you why
As I see and try to find out why you left me for those hungry eyes
She cant give you what Ive got
And she cant stop your pain
And she cant love you the way I do
God I want you back again
Maybe she could try with money
Or she could buy you clothes
But baby when its dark and youre home at night
Does she ever hold you close
Take me back
Ooh youre gonna take me
Take me back
Ooh youre gonna take me
Take me back
Ooh youre gonna take me
Take me back...

The Thought
Into the skies, one summer's day,
I sent a little Thought away;
Up to where, in the blue round,
The sun sat shining without sound.
Then my Thought came back to me.—
Little Thought, what did you see
In the regions whence you come?
And when I spoke, my Thought was dumb.
But she breathed of what was there,
In the pure bright upper air;
And, because my Thought so shone,
I knew she had been shone upon.
Next, by night a Thought I sent
Up into the firmament;
When the eager stars were out,
And the still moon shone about.
And my Thought went past the moon
In between the stars, but soon
Held her breath and durst not stir,
For the fear that covered her;
Then she thought, in this demur:
'Dare I look beneath the shade,
Into where the worlds are made;
Where the suns and stars are wrought?
Shall I meet another Thought?
'Will that other Thought have wings?
Shall I meet strange, heavenly things?
Thought of Thoughts, and Light of Lights,
Breath of Breaths, and Night of Nights?'
Then my Thought began to hark
In the illuminated dark,
Till the silence, over, under,
Made her heart beat more than thunder.
And my Thought, came trembling back,
But with something on her track,
And with something at her side;
Nor till she has lived and died,
Lived and died, and lived again,
Will that awful thing seem plain.

Back then, when life was green among the curly ferns
And it was happy as the height of crystal night
My brother was my younger treasure
And we would daily play
by climbing trees and building forts with skinly knees
We were milky soft
Our eyes, they shined
And there was no such thing as watching time

Land Of La La
You were brought up in a small town
Where everyone greeted with a morning smile
I mean the place was so free from crime
You could leave your front door open
And if your eyes were drawn from a lack of food
Or your pockets were short on cash
There was always someone close at hand
That you could always run to
You could have been a doctor
And you could have been a nurse
But these things werent good enough for you
So you decided to pack up all you own
And get a one-way ticket there
To a place where all the successful people went
In order for them to do
Im a big boy now, shes a strong girl
Remember only the strong can survive
Living in the land of la la
Im a big boy now, shes a strong girl
Remember only the strong can survive
Living in the land of la la
L.a., l.a., la la, la la, l.a., hey hey, land of la la
L.a., l.a., la la, la la, l.a., hey hey, the land of la la
You get off the bus, pick up a paper
And look through the classified
So that you might find a place
Suitable for you to move into
Then you turn around to pick up the duffle bag
That you brought along
But much to your surprise you find
Your bag has taken off walking
You dig in your wallet
To get your last dime
But then recall you just spent your last dime on the newspaper
Youre much too prideful
But pride has no defense
When all youve got in your possession
Is the wallet in your hands
Im a big boy now, shes a strong girl
Remember only the strong can survive
Living in the land of la la
Im a big boy now, shes a strong girl
Remember only the strong can survive
Living in the land of la la
(repeat)
L.a., l.a., la la, la la, l.a., hey hey, living in the land of la la
(repeat)
You might get everything you want
But not want everything you get
Being in la la land is like nowhere else
Living in the land, one hell of a land, a land full of lost angels
Movie stars and great big cars and perrier and fun all day
And thats enough to make anybody go wild
In the land of la la
Hes a big boy now, shes a strong girl
But only the strong can survive
Living in the land of la la

Day And Night Collided
When day met night
Everything felt right
Day awakes and starts new lives
Night sleeps but it's still alive
Day is always shinning its light
Night is dark but still just as bright
Day is crowded, full of living things
Night is empty, no awake beings
Day is wild, cause of what people do
Night is crazy, believe they are too
Day is dirty, it starts to match night
Night is clean, its gets quiet, just right
Day is loud, the noises surrounding it
Night is peaceful, no noises around it
Day is special, as special as it comes
Night is different, it's nothing, no one can see
They are both loved, we all are attached
But like they say, opposites attract

Say Its Alright Joe
Say its alright joe,
I need another drink
To blow on the glass so I know Im alive
Play me a song joe
To fill the hours till morning
Then never again will I bother you
Ooh, build myself a tower
No way in no way out.
Then my friends can visit me
Once in a while.
Say its alright joe,
I need some reassurance
You never know what you might find in the night.
Ooh Im just a busy bee, still alive in my hive,
Im looking for some other world
To dream out my dreams.
There were kings who were laughing in the rain
And they told me Id come here to lead the parade
All the colours were changing, the sky was in ruins
The lights are all shining on me and on you
Oh, shine on........
Say its alright joe
The night will soon be over
And nothing and no one will ever know.
Open my eyes joe
Id like to see the daylight
The clock on the wall says its time to leave.
Never seen the same face twice
Never walked the same way
The little love that I have known
I keep to myself.
If theres a fire its asleep in my bed
I must leave it to burn till it burns itself out
Catch as you can Im not staying here long
Ill be coming back early or never at all
Shine on........

Valentines Day
Once a year a day comes
On the calendar of time
That marks just one of many
I would hope to make you mine
For most it conjures visions
That begin only in part
Of Cupid slinging arrows
Through his intended victims heart
It's candy, cards, and flowers
That are touched by morning dew
And other sweet surprises
Full of love they might renew
It's pink champagne and candlelight
And gazing at the moon
A kiss with all the passion
That would cause a girl to swoon
It's all these things and many more
And what they're meant to be
But none nearly important as
The words that you love me
And in return I promise you
Through good times and in strife
I'll give you all my heart can give
My love, my soul, my life

In the night with you
Last night I saw the full moon
hang yellow-gold through the window,
above your shoulder over the bed.
Your big eyes
mirrored the starry lights from outside
and your beautiful face,
looked soft and full of rest
and peaceful.
The smell of jasmine
from the garden
glided into the room
and while I laid and looked at you,
I knew that I am really living.
Somewhere from one of the trees
a bird called to its mate
and in the night
and for hours,
I laid and waited
for the red morning light to arrive
and for you to awake.

Red Hill Mining Town
]from father to son
The blood runs thin
Our faces frozen (still) against the wind
The seam is split
The coal face cracked
The lines are long
And theres no going back
Through hands of steel
And a heart of stone
Our labor day has come and gone
And you leave us holding on
In red hill town
As the lights go down
Im hanging on
Youre all thats left to hang on to
Im holding on
Youre all thats left to hang on to
The glass is cut
The bottle runs dry
Our love runs cold
In the caverns of the night
Were wounded by fear
Injured in doubt
I can lose myself
Im holding on
Youre all thats left to hold on to
And we scorch the earth
Set fire to the sky
Stoop so low to reach so high
A link is lost
The chain undone
Now we wait all day
For the night to come
And it comes
And it comes
Like a hunter (child)
Im hanging on
Youre all thats left to hang on to
Im hanging on to
Youre all thats left to hang on to
We see love slowly stripped away
Our love, has seen a better day
Im hanging on
Youre all thats left to hold on to
Im holding on
Youre all thats left to hold on to
See the lights go down on red hill town
See lights go down on red hill town

Looking For Love
looking for love, looking at faces
looking for love in all the wrong places
thinking that i could find love in a bar
the worst place by far.
gathering all my thoughts on what i could do
that is when i saw you.
the walk you walked was a walk of pride
with a big smile, and your head held high.
you walked past me and i smelled your perfume
it was a smell which would not leave you to soon
i became attracted to you as a bee to a flower
i knew right then that you had the power
to make me give up the search of mine
to find in you a love devine
i ran in back of you and asked for your name
you looked at me as if i was insane.
you looked at me from head to toe
and then told me where i could go.
i apoligized to you for my boldness.
and that the sight of you caught my eye
and that i would continue to try
and if i had to climb the highest mountain
or swim the deepest sea
then thats the way it would have to be.
but i would not stop trying to get to know you
and if a fool i had to be, until the
day that you would look at me.
i would do anything that you want to get to
make you smile and hear the laughter
this is all that i am after.
with my crazyiness you started to laugh
and told me you did not want to relive the past.
of being hurt and shedding the tears
this was something that you feared.
you layed down the ground rules from the start, and i accepted it with all my heart.
soon after we got to know each other.
and your fears slowly deminished
you opened your heart and i saw what was in it.
a love so deep and so profound
that it knocked me to the ground.
in my heart you will be
keeping my heart company.
looking for love, i no longer seek
because of you- i am complete.l

Vigil Strange I Kept on the Field one Night
Vigil strange I kept on the field one night;
When you my son and my comrade dropt at my side that day,
One look I but gave which your dear eyes return'd with a look I shall never forget,
One touch of your hand to mine O boy, reach'd up as you lay on the ground,
Then onward I sped in the battle, the even-contested battle,
Till late in the night reliev'd to the place at last again I made my way,
Found you in death so cold dear comrade, found your body son of responding kisses, (never again on earth responding,)
Bared your face in the starlight, curious the scene, cool blew the moderate night-wind,
Long there and then in vigil I stood, dimly around me the battle-field spreading,
Vigil wondrous and vigil sweet there in the fragrant silent night,
But not a tear fell, not even a long-drawn sigh, long, long I gazed,
Then on the earth partially reclining sat by your side leaning my chin in my hands,
Passing sweet hours, immortal and mystic hours with you dearest comrade -- not a tear, not a word,
Vigil of silence, love and death, vigil for you my son and my soldier,
As onward silently stars aloft, eastward new ones upward stole,
Vigil final for you brave boy, (I could not save you, swift was your death,
I faithfully loved you and cared for you living, I think we shall surely meet again,)
Till at latest lingering of the night, indeed just as the dawn appear'd,
My comrade I wrapt in his blanket, envelop'd well his form,
Folded the blanket well, tucking it carefully over head and carefully under feet,
And there and then and bathed by the rising sun, my son in his grave, in his rude-dug grave I deposited,
Ending my vigil strange with that, vigil of night and battle-field dim,
Vigil for boy of responding kisses, (never again on earth responding,)
Vigil for comrade swiftly slain, vigil I never forget, how as day brighten'd,
I rose from the chill ground and folded my soldier well in his blanket,
And buried him where he fell.

The Urn....
He finally pulled in the drive.
Another endless night at work.
Exhausted, he turned off the car,
and stumbled for the back door.
The neighborhood cat rubbed
against his legs as he fumbled
for the key.
As he opened the door, he noticed
that the light over the sink was on.
Shaking his head, he shrugged, and set
down his lunchbox.
He reached in the cupboard for the
bottle and a glass. He poured a small
shot, and hesitated for a moment.
He could hear the night just outside
the window. Something inside of
him let down. He kicked back the shot,
and headed for the bathroom.
A quick shower, and he found his way
to the bedroom. Lying naked on the
bed, he lit a smoke, trying not to think.
He could hear the ticking of the clock in
the hallway. He put out the cigarette, and
dozed.
He awakened to the scent of her perfume.
He heard her voice, whispering, 'be still'.
He felt the presence of her body in the bed.
Her long hair draped across his face. He
felt her on top of him, her heat and her desire.
He raised his face to kiss her....
And then she was gone! Startled, he groped
at the bed, clutching air. He sat up and flipped
on the lamp.
The room was empty. A few crumpled dirty
clothes in the floor. The book he'd been reading
on the nightstand. But no sign of her!
His hands shaking, he lit a smoke, and blinked.
He looked around the room again.
Every nook, every cranny, every crack in the paint.
Finally, his eyes fixed on her dresser.
A picture of her on their wedding day. A half empty
bottle of her favorite perfume. And the urn.... the
urn, with her wedding ring lying on the base.
He flipped off the lamp, and wept.

No Son Of Mine
Well the key to my survival
Was never in much doubt
The question was how I could keep sane
Trying to find a way out
Things were never easy for me
Peace of mind was hard to fin
And I needed a place where I could hide
Somewhere I could call mine
I didnt think much about it
Til it started happening all the time
Soon I was living with the fear everyday
Of what might happen that night
I couldnt stand to hear the
Crying of my mother
And I remember when
I swore that, that would be the
Last theyd see of me
And I never went home again
They say that time is a healer
And now my wounds are not the same
I rang the bell with my heart in my mouth
I had to hear what hed say
He sat me down to talk to me
He looked me straight in the eyes
He said:
Youre no son, youre no son of mine
Youre no son, youre no son of mine
You walked out, you left us behind
And youre no son, no son of mine
Oh, his words how they hurt me, Ill never forget it
And as the time, it went by, I lived to regret it
Youre no son, youre no son of mine
But where should I go,
And what should I do
Youre no son, youre no son of mine
But I came here for help, oh I came here for you
Well the years they passed so slowly
I thought about him everyday
What would I do, if we passed on the street
Would I keep running away
In and out of hiding places
Soon Id have to face the facts
Wed have to sit down and talk it over
And that would mean going back
They say that time is a healer
And now my wounds are not the same
I rang that bell with my heart in my mouth
I had to hear what hed say
He sat me down to talk to me
He looked me straight in the eyes
He said:
Youre no son, youre no son of mine
Youre no son, youre no son of mine
When you walked out, you left us behind
And youre no son, youre no son of mine

Youre no son, youre no son of mine
But where should I go and what should I do
Youre no son, youre no son of mine
But I came here for help, oh I was looking for you
Youre no son, youre no son of mine - oh
Youre no son - ha yeah, ha yeah, ha yeah, ha yeah

A New Year The Brave New Year
And keep holding on your hand wish to kiss
All my life I wish, full of spill
when we lay as close as gallows
things may change with one kiss darling
And together we laughing
Wishing you were here
Darling I think of you everyday for a elope
I don't know if I could face a year to come
It is as if I was, alone on this perch
There are many stars surround, none I can reach and love,
And one look into your eyes
tells me something has gone.
I must be out of my mind.
There were so many nights
I'd feel hot smell upon my glass...
But it all comes with this night darling
