BETROTHAL

She is in wild shivers
as a bunch of new faces are due to arrive
to get her betrothed with
someone - of whom she knows nothing

The society around her is supreme
enacts and approves such gambling
binding the hearts on, bids and bargains
expensive contracts - and they call them ‘marriage'

In silk sarees with all your ornaments on
with suppressed feelings and limited smiling
as a ‘central object', advised to keep your mouth shut
exchange of ‘tambools' -
you are sold out to a new world unknown

she becomes ‘unattached' - an earmarked commodity;
and her movements are restrained, loss of freedom
as an ‘hypothecated stock' she remains under parents
with exclusive rights passed on to the other side barons

If she is earning, she has to keep the whole packet aside
and if she has tooth ache, she cannot get it pulled, as she liked
If by a freak accident, she has bruised her little finger
her ‘destined owner' should inspect and ratify all physical damage

Dear bride;
it is not the correct sign
that you are being loved so much
and please do not likewise be misled
that you are going to be cared by them till the far end

high dramas, leading you through a colour-full panorama
Into the stage of deceit and trauma
we have no method to test-pick a honest groom -
among the black sheep sporting the role of ‘mahatma'

Conflicting Idealism!

When mother had put on the dress to me,
She told me not to let anyone to remove that,
When I became slightly older, she gave me,
The long skirts and blouses to wear,
Then the sarees of various materials, color and designs,
Filled my closets, I used to run around,
When I was young and then I was advised,
To walk slowly without making any noise,
Though the anklets, the parents had worn,
Around my ankles always made the ringing tone,
For them to know where I was,
From wherever they were,
Mother advised me to sleep on the side,
And for my every sneeze she arrived with pride,
To cover my exposed joined feet and to correct,
A few strand on the face and smiled,
A well educated man whom my parents and relatives loved,
tied the three knots to make me his wife.
This is the guy, who asks me to do,
What my parents prevented me to do.
This is the guy that my parents respect the most,
And advise me to listen and obey whatever he says.

Chudidars

From five year old to fifty year mold
it is the most preferred mode
piercing unto the village mobs
misshape features go hiding under this robe

neck to knee, a one sheet shutter
kabuli pants for magnum thigh and buttocks
loose fitting free size easy wear sacks
nested in safety, their movements are unfettered

full-drawn curtains over high power grids
teasing eyes can have no happy raids
sun shine is barred inside the chambers
faces of soldiers, roaming in Armour

The blouse and saree with limited windows
can have a telling story of its own
even while on your deepest dreams
chudidars have no place - and such is our culture

Till I Go Down

Till I go down
Till I go down
Till I go down
Im not gonna shut my eyes
Till I go down
Im not gonna shut my eyes
Ive already seen the lies
On the faces of the men of war
Leading people to the killing floor
Till I go down
Till I go down
Till I go down
Im not gonna shut my eyes
No no
Till I go down
Till the world stops spinning around
Till Im six feet under the ground
Till theres no sound
Till theres no pain
Im gonna swing this chain
Till I go down
Im not gonna shut my mouth
Im for the truth to come out
About the leader with the iron will
And his allegiance to the dollar bill
Till I go down
Till I go down
Till I go down
Im not gonna shut my eyes

A Marriage And Life Of Human Beings!

Till the marriage time they don't know;
Marriage strengthens their alliance in life;
Before that they have not even seen once!
This is life made for each other till the end;
What a life between two hearts in the world!
Many marriage functions we attend in lifetime;
They look to be a normal and usual thing;
But till the marriage alliance is fixed for sure
Nothing seems to be sure and keep on trying!
This is the same case with many parents here
And nothing can be visualised before that time!
Likewise marriages are fixed and conducted
For years together and families grow to big size
In the life of human beings as far as I have seen!

Even now in heaven
There were angels carrying savage weapons
An eye for an eye...(for an eye...)
A tooth for a tooth...(for a tooth...)
Run, run, run,
But you sure can't hide...(hide...hide)

Is this darkness all you'll take?
Have you'd passed through this life?

The Journey Of Love

Love is what we define it to be for us, yet this is helpful.
We tend to fall in love repeatedly. I fall in love all the time!
In a world full of beauty, it would be folly not to, wouldn't it?
So, it's wonderful when all goes well, but no guarantees of that.
The marriage contract is exclusive love, till death us do part!
Pre-marriage has no legal contract or morally-binding contract.
We remain free agents till marriage. That usually ends freedom!
It's a mutually-binding union of spirit, body and soul...
The female of the species is usually mature and responsible.
She is forward-thinking, capable of deciding who she loves.
She knows that short-term loves aren't the real deal.
With parental advice, she is best served most of the time.
Pushy parents don't help, but sensitive parents do!
The thought of a loved one with someone else is agony.
Children experience this as new babies are born into the family.
Adults have a different scenario to complicate things!
Love is the build-up of intense desires, hopes and dreams.
It's also a thoroughly competitive arena with winners and losers.
The expression, 'the walking wounded', applies to lovers, too.
Maybe through bad experiences, we become more sensitive.
If any guys have found the dream-girl the first time, lucky them!
Most of us don't, won't, can't, shan't... we are explorers!
This in essence is the journey, the journey of love...
Each heart acts as a compass towards compassion not passion!
You see, love isn't what we desire but what we aspire to.
Love doesn't come with a miracle manual, we have to work at it!
Most of the time the only exercise we get is to exercise restraint!
Even millionaires have trouble with love! What chance have we got?
We have simply got to make a better effort, that's all!
Nothing wondrous ever came easy... unfortunately...

Ode to Death

in the end
we all bid
farewell
to ourselves
in the cold
the world a stage
everybody has
to play no,
not Shakespeare's
suggested single role
but a double role
master and slave

this physique
that stoically
bids us
do its chores
for all its needs
physical, spiritual
the most exacting partner
one would ever get
a quiet stoic bullier
and after all the slavery tasks
the master leaves
the slave in the cold
a cold that freezes
in the finest of weather
without the snow
the blizzard
deep into everybody's heart, soul

the master and slave
a marriage made in heaven
till death do us part

Busy Lovers' Guide - Mud - Horse Heroes

BUSY LOVERS' GUIDE - MUD-HORSE HEROES

I used to scribble always
since my college days.
a few of my close friends
used to ghearo me often
urging me to write
in sweet terms, love letters
running to pages, all trash
to decoy their innocent lovers
posing themselves as literal master

Likewise, I had sinned several times
and with borrowed bricks, cement and mortars
all were thriving high and fast
but riding always on the mud, dumb horse
giving no chance to the other-side
of the chain of foul plays involved

But, I must be the most worst idiot
with so much own skills at my command,
and tested abilities of roping in a ‘heart'
of services rendered and
the dividends they reaped -
I did not shore up
a Dolphin for me.

Those guys who went
ahead with marriage
secretly, confessed to me later
that their wives were
much more wicked
not even to detect till -
that their youthful, winning husbands
were real big zeros.

The women of rare, the Pandora box
of generous feelings that nothing of her is lost
true models of socialistic heart
the unsung great, on national integration cruise

the otherwise nice, is woefully on her wrong foot
tagged at a price, in exchange of her loot
short- lived drama, she plays the role as mute
hang up your boot and nose-dive into the soot

wrestling nights and joyless bouts
handsome gains for machine like work
ready- made smiles, cajole and the run-down flesh
taste-less men do waste their wealth

virtues and values are under the carpet
pricking conscience is ruthlessly slaughtered
when your dear ones are toiling in the quarters
you are bent to reward them from your………… AIDS Basket

Old marriage style

Unwillingly ushered in a house unknown,
Saw a young lady keeping head down,
White complexioned girl with eyes brown,
Almost frozen but expressions not frown,

I was at pained to learn orthodox way,
Children still not allowed having a say,
Uncertainty more and prediction less,
What is in store only assumptions and guess?

With great courage one may ask “hello”
Limited conversation and tradition to follow,
Parents present and limited talks,
Accompany to little distance with few step walks;

I am your would be companion,
Running a shop but not a champion,
Will allow freedom that you need,
No dowry, nothing or any more greed,

“Will you marry me” simply I ask,
Rush blood on face but hide in mask,
Wait for an answer and okay the proposal,
Parents too were ready for quick disposal,

Quick come yes as no competition,
answer ready even without question,
so stage is ready for lovely meet,
parent happy and exchange greet,

Day for final count down almost arrive,
simple way to wed and not to connive,
It’s way of life and norms to follow,
promise made doesn’t seem hollow

A Newer Day Will Surely Dawn!

For sake of peace, I keep mouth shut;
I cannot be unethical;
I live 'midst vixen, foxes but,
Happen will new miracle!

Four years sped off, leading this flock;
Black sheep exist 'mongst them I know;
For better grazing grounds, I knock;
But time eludes my search somehow!

Sometimes I feel so miserable
For leading such a flock of sheep;
To make ends meet, I'm unable;
Perilous vales surround me, deep!

But God has chosen me to lead,
In destined ways for some more time;
I know, my heart must sometimes bleed,
In inclement weather and clime!

But things must end, however bad!
And better days, I will catch on;
That God's beside, I am so glad;
A newer day will surely dawn!

Whiite Paper Of A White Tiger

WHITE PAPER OF A WHITE TIGER

At my very door step
Exactly on the same time;
They serve me a square meal
Of chopped up, weighed fresh meat
Tested and vitaminised
Bucket-full of ready feast

…….no ….no…..I am not a VVIP
But, jailed for years
As a rare Bengal beast

One way, I am quite happy
That I need not have to labour
Or strain myself for a small prey
They are treating me as an ‘ex-ruler'
Loss of freedom - I do not even bother

In view of the respects
Care they offer, I feel much better
Than a loner in the forest

Sometimes, I may not be hungry at all
And have to skip a meal
On a long nap in my cellar

Quickly, they will move me
To the veterinary lab
Until they certify that nothing is wrong
Great people and their love and affection
Never allowing me to go fasting or dieting

I meet daily visitors of all sort
Joyous, sad, haves and have-not
Hanging on to the bars with awe and sympathy
As if I am at loss, punished or starved

In fact, through the dividing bars
Watchfully, I come across numerous faces
Dried up and charmless,
With no traces of happiness
And I silently, thank that I was so fortunate

For I can roar, walk majestically
Even under the terms of captivity

The poor people across, are cowed down
With invisible chains and cages
Their roaming and movements at free will
Doesn't make any sense to me

Though, in reality and at this age,
I cannot hunt a tiny rat on my own skill.

Rose Bouquets

I lay down
frilly covered
bouquet still
at my side;

lovely gown
arrayed

I lay down
rose petals all around
my arms at my side
my groom
outside
murmuring.

I am prepared
for this my surrender
or this my consummation;
this my mistake?

The Unknown?
The Alone?
The Bride.

Where do virginal brides go;
they hide in the rose petals
and wait.

I plucked a rose from
my bouquet-
gathered my
wits

and sat up on the bed
to walk to the door
to greet
my new husband;
face to face.

Bride I thought,
should stand up
because marriage now
means
more that courting;
marriage here begins
true partnership;
meet him at the door.

Loss Of...

Loss it seems is the worst kind of sorrow
Loss of dreams, the dreams of tomorrow

Loss of the moments you two should have shared
Loss of opportunities to show her you cared

Loss of the memories you both could have created
Loss of the romance once intense as you dated

Loss of a kiss, caress, or embrace
Loss of that special feeling no one else can replace

Loss of a look, the twinkle in her eye
Loss of the touch as you pass each other by

Loss of a future, from a past of regret
Loss of a last chance, how many do you get

Loss of a promise you never meant to break
Loss of two hearts that forever will ache

Catch Up Or Disappear

CATCH UP OR DISAPPEAR

YOU cannot just grudge
the way the world so flies
You cannot just try
the speed so high, you cry
You cannot just shy
away from the rules that so fry
You cannot just lie
blind to the needs that are so sly
You cannot just say nay
To the changes that may leave you so dry
You cannot just stop and pry
as no one wants you here so naïve
If, you cannot thus survive
CLEAR OUT - the world is so,
NOT YOURS OR MINE.

God Save The South

It was a red hot night night in mobile
Sweat glistened on the reverends chin
His mohair suit was shinin
He told us all about sin
It could be wall to wall in wall street
We could be livin hand to mouth
Jesus loved a yankee
But God saved the south
Across the street in the pool hall
Bubba put the eight ball down
Its a high five celebration
They passed the jack around
Its wall to wall in wall street
Were livin hand to mouth
Jesus loved a yankee
But God saved the south
God saved the south
Yankee boy shut your mouth
Yes, God saved the south
Yankee boy shut your mouth
Shut your mouth
Some long haired boys with guitars
Playin behind the chicken wire
Theyre goin up to new york city
Gonna sing about atlantas fire
It could be wall to wall in wall street
We could be livin hand to mouth
Jesus loved a yankee
But God saved the south
And God saved the south
Yankee boy shut your mouth
Yes, God saved the south
Yankee boy shut your mouth
Yes, God saved the south
Yankee boy shut your mouth
And God saved the south
So,yankee boy shut your mouth
And God saved the south
Yankee boy shut your mouth
Yes, God saved the south
So, yankee boy shut your mouth

So, yankee boy shut your mouth

Mona Lisa

MONA LISA

All through the days of the week
Double-busy with my table work
I can return home little earlier, but
Have to sit with my son's homework

And if I am really free at home
My kind wife would order some jobs for me
Dusting the windows, cleaning the ceiling,
Washing the gas-stove and scrapping the sump clean

But for her duties as merely a housewife
She keeps a servant full-time on all meals basis
Just as a ‘mistress' she does only supervise
With her starched Kota sarees' crease never shuffling

Scientists make bombs but politicians use it
Whatever, I earn hard, my spouse so freely expends
You are a machine with no powers to revolt
Nor to halt or question anything you suspect

Vexed by these features, I opted to ‘sanyas'
And am to board a train to night to 'Kailash'
In search of peace, respect and freedom
But, ….my charming sister-in-law has only just come
……I need to cancel at once the whole thing!

My Mothers Life

Born into poverty, abandoned very young
No mother or lullabies to be sung
Left all alone, her the oldest of three
Boards nailed on the windows so they couldn't see

She would write on the wall, one mark each day
So she would know how long they'd been away
Dad said to her, mom is really sick
Got to get her to the hospital, need to go real quick

Take care of the kids till we get back
Not a light in the place, all was black
Barely any food for them all to eat
The room so drafty, there was no heat

One day when she had fourteen marks on the wall
She heard a man shout out a call
He told the others, I hear crying inside
Pulled the boards of the door, while they tried to hide

He told the others, these children need food and clothes
He sure glad he heard them before the building was bulldozed
He called child welfare, and ladies came out
They took these poor children without a doubt

They took these children to different foster parents
Their neglect and and poverty was quite apparent
Their parents never returned to get them back
But at least they weren't still living in that old shack

They all were adopted to different places
Never to hold or see each others faces
Helen was the oldest, the one who had cared for them
Haunted for life, from the memories that stem

I know this story oh so well
Because of the past her whole life was hell
I was her daughter, till she passed away
It effected my life too, I was others prey

She didn't know how to be a mother
All we three, her children had was one another
So I suffer the curse of loneliness and depression
I've been loved and another's possession

I've been abused, the pain goes deep
What other have sewn is what I've reaped

Good to Marry

Whenever you develop some kind of obsession
Think of nice time with entering into marriage session
It is lovely bond and to be enjoyed in full
So holy and sacred to be made memorable and beautiful

Well if to be managed with pomp and show
Then all the miserable tendencies must go
Lavish and grand show for marriage reception
All nice preparation for pomp and show from inception

Nice way of arranging even small things
No let up or carelessness in anything
The show must be remembered for all the times to come
All participants must be greeted with welcome

There is no let up in any preparation
As it is opening up of new relation
Everybody wished happy married life with blessings
Every care is taken to make sure it does not result in messing

It is golden chance to rejoice in special moment
It is full acknowledged and taken care that there are unpleasant comments
Everything moves on smoothly and with joy
Groom and bride dream in new world and enjoy

The final day was awaited by parents
Small saving was done for preparation and ornaments
Something was to be given as marriage gift
As bride was going away with complete shift

It is definitely nice occasion
Many may be seized with the obsession
Yet it is ritual and that has to be honored
That is why all precaution taken and labored

It is just a final seal to be put on holy deal
It is nice to see the bond resulting into real
We all pray it to last long and end in happy union
Life may go on as usual with the company companion

Trauma World

The unavoidable desire to take you home
Like suffocating all my clearest thoughts
It seems like yesterday when we lay here side by side
But it's countless nights ago that it passed away
In a trauma world
Discovering all the depths in which we stand
In a trauma world
Fighting our achievements every day
In a trauma world
The truth is so surreal and incomplete
In a trauma world
Sifting through the memories in our heads
When I held a fragile hand that sorry day
Not feeling cold inside, uncompromising
As if romancing all night long in our imaginations,
Then one second changed our lives eternally
Understand me if I take you into my arms
Please forgive me if I am searching for your heart
Do you hear me when I'm crying every night?
I must start
