Krishna Returning With The Herd

Mohan comes herding the cows,
crown of peacock feathers on his head,
garland of forest flowers on his chest,
in his hand a wooden staff,
his body wrapped in cow-dust.
A band around his waist
and from his feet the sound of anklets
there amidst his cow-boy friends
Shyam comes. His yellow garments standing out
like lightning amidst the clouds.

Sonnet – Amidst

Amidst pitch -black darkness, God shows a light;
Amidst a Forest thick, He shows a way;
Amidst black clouds, He brings a moonlit night;
Amidst sorrows, God gives a happy day.

Amidst the desert, Oasis God shows;
Amidst the stormy Sea, He brings calm;
Amidst much strife, He opens newer doors;
Amidst much hopelessness, a helping palm.

Amidst tempest, God shows a bright light-house;
Amidst the glaciers, much sought-after peak;
Amidst our solitude, He gives a spouse;
Amidst the ravines deep, the lost lamb meek.

Amidst the chaos, God ushers new hope,
Amidst the gloom, He gives the church a Pope.

I Danced Before My Giridhara

I danced before my Giridhara.
Again and again I dance
To please that discerning critic,
And put His former love to the test.
I put on the anklets
Of the love of Shyam,
And behold! My Mohan stays true.
Worldly shame and family custom
I have cast to the winds.
I do not forget the beauty of the Beloved
Even for an instant.
Mira is dyed deeply in the dye of Hari.

Sonnet: A Prayer to God

Amidst all chaos Lord, bring order God;
Amidst the darkness Lord, show me Thine light;
Amidst the atheism, give me Thine word;
Amidst my weakness show, Thine divine might.

Amidst life’s sultriness Lord, give me breeze;
Amidst the mire Lord, could Thou me pull?
Amidst life’s stresses Lord, give me mind’s peace;
Amidst the storms of life, give me a lull.

Amidst my despair Lord, give me new hope;
Amidst my temptations, God, let me win;
Amidst life’s hilly tracts, show me a slope;
Amidst my struggles Lord, let me not sin.

Amidst my foes and woes, show me haven;
Amidst my worldliness, give me Heaven.

My Idea Of A Good Day

There will be no sleep
The pains of hunger
The searing burn of thirst
Discomfort
But not discontentment
A feeling of loneliness amongst the overwhelming presence
A feeling of depression amidst the joy
A feeling of chaos amidst the peace
A feeling of confusion amidst the wisdom
A feeling of dejection amidst the love

There will be success
The delights of a feast
The coolness of an iced drink
Contentment
Complacency
A feeling of completion amidst inner brokenness
A feeling of happiness amidst inner death
A feeling of peacefulness amidst inner turmoil
A feeling of wisdom amidst inner misunderstanding
A feeling of camaraderie amidst an inner and overwhelming loneliness

Here's a hint, my idea of a good day isn't based on feelings.

Follow (I Am The Flute)

i follow...
the hoot of the owl,
the smoke that leads
to the fire.
the hollow of the hand,
to the hard and the soft.
the salt of the sea
to the dark and murky unknown.
the erection and the breast,
to the womb that creates.
lightning to the thunder,
and thunder to lightning.
the hammer to the nail,
the bullet through the barrel.
the spirit through the book,
back to the tree in the forest.
the body to the grave,
the universe back to dust.
i follow...
the sound of the flute,
till i come to see...
that i follow nothing,
and no one at all!
for i am the path,
and the feet that walk.
i am the flute,
the sound and the lips.
i am the breath,
the desire, and the vision...
for i am no one,
and nothing at all!

I am not a pendulum

I liked the way
You held my hand,
Amidst all the opposition,
Now you left it,
Amidst all the favours,
And I liked it too,
For I am not a pendulum.

A Cross Amidst Thorns

A stream flows in a swamp
Rain falls on a barren ground
A saint in a lion’s den.
A dove amongst owls…
There’s a cross amidst thorns.

Innocence dwells with guilt
Hope lingers in a despairing people
Life struggles with the grave.
Love unmasks into hatred…
There’s a cross amidst thorns.

Peace competes with the wrathful hand of anarchy
Conscience fights with corruption
The truth passes along with deception
Righteousness boasts with evil
There’s a cross amidst thorns

There’s a cross amidst thorns
Hope radiates from despair
Light reigns above darkness
Faith conquers fear
There’s a cross amidst thorns

Go To That Impenetrable Realm

Go to that impenetrable realm
That death himself trembles to look upon.
There plays the fountain of love
With swans sporting on its waters.

There the company of holy men is available,
And one may talk of spiritual knowledge.
There one can mediate on Shyam
And purify one's mind.

There one may bind on
The anklets of good-conduct,
And dance the dance of inner contentment.

There one may adopt a headpiece of gold
And the sixteen kinds of adornment,
Let there be love for Shyam
And indifference to all else.

The Yellow Magnolias

and in keeping
yellow magnolias alive
for more dark nights
amid some
unexpected storm
we do not grown them
in our pockets

in the garden
amidst the wooden fences
we attempt
to keep them forever

only the heart knows
what real keeping is
there are no roots
neither
buds and leaves
but my yellow magnolias
live there
forever

did you not say once
before
that eventual leaving
that it is only
really the
thought that matters
most?

i know
you keep telling me
magnolias are
always white

and you never believe
my yellow ones

The First Meeting Of Radha And Krishna

Krishna went playing in the lanes of Braj,
a yellow silk garment round his waist,
holding a top and a string to spin it with,
a crown of peacock-feathers adorning his head
his ears with charming ear-rings decked,
his teeth flashing brighter than the sun's rays,
his limbs anointed with sandalwood-paste.

On the Yamuna bank he chanced to see Radha;
a tika mark of turmeric on her brow,
dressed in a flowing skirt and blue blouse,
her lovely long wreathed hair dangling behind,
a stripling, fair, of beauty unsurpassed
with he a bevy of fair milkmaids:

Krishna's eyes met her's;
love woke in his heart,
says Suradasa, bewitched by her,
he gazed and gazed.

Dandelions

Little
Bright, yellow heads
Despised not for beauty.
That are here, there and everywhere
I tread
Ever
so cautiously
In your meadowy home
Amidst copious genera
Alone.
Solo
But not really
Alone. Strolling along
Accompanied by my friends at
My feet.
Brushing
Jagged edged leaves-
Like baby lion’s teeth.
So aptly named dent de lions.
Lead on!
Yellow
Companions. The
Season is waning. Your
Feathery, cotton heads reveal
Its end.

THE friends that are, and friends that were,
What shallow waves divide!
I miss the form for many a year
Still seated at my side.

I miss him, yet I feel him still
Amidst our faithful band,
As if not death itself could chill
The warmth of friendship's hand.

His story other lips may tell,--
For me the veil is drawn;
I only knew he loved me well,
He loved me--and is gone!

Love Song

Your eyes sparkle in the darkness as green as Venus glancing.
I can envision your stance, stately as
Jonquils standing erectly near the coming of the spring equinox-
I would give to you the gift of a yellow peace rose in full bloom, or
Pick for you some wild violets that grow amongst the grass beneath my feet-
You are my iridescent passionflower, crimson red as
The sun could be at dawn,
Your gentle hands I would warm in mine amidst the snow,
Unspoiled, freshly fallen…
With you I could dance upon a star-lit evening, to catch in hand
A ray that exudes from the full moon rising,
That I would gladly give to warm your soul and spirit, and
To chase away your tears that fall as a
Summer storm approaches would be in my fondest reverie.
Morning glories that awaken at the dawning of the day,
Open to let the warmth of the sun and your winning smile to
Cheer me as I walk-
I shall walk with you amongst the wild violets that blossom before my feet, and
Capture in my hands some dandelions that seem to grow eternally.
A zephyr breeze at the break of day shall carry their thistles towards the sky.
You are the whirlwind of my thoughts,
The chorus of the song of the nightingale,
And the tallest evergreen in all of the forest-
I would give to you a garland adorned with lilacs and forget-me-nots,
If not just to behold your jade-like eyes envelop mine as
They open at the break of day.
Love is an unfamiliar feeling that has stricken every chamber of
My pounding heart, and
Your eyes reflect the clarity of the dewdrops that moisten the grass.
You have built a palace out of cumulus clouds,
A place that could well be heaven-
The envy of angels and all of the patron saints, you are, and
Until the day the universe ceases to expand,
I shall forever be giving you flowers as I walk-
Even if I walk alone-
You would not invade my beloved solitude,
My glorious passionflower whose eyes sparkle refracting against the dew-
As unfamiliar as love can a feeling be,
It is one to treasure forever until the day I die,
Although I truly believe we shall live forever,
Forever in that palace built of cumulus clouds,
Even past the night that all the stars in our galaxy burn out and dissipate, and
Fall as copper-hued dust to settle and mingle with the
Dewdrops that cover the grounds that we shall forever together
Walk upon as we climb that ladder towards our home,
That palace erected for you and I only, as we become lost inside of our dreams,
As we, always together dwell, in rhythm with the changing of each season in time…

Mine is Gopal

Mine Is Gopal
Mine is Gopal, the Mountain-Holder; there is no one else.
On his head he wears the peacock-crown: He alone is my husband.
Father, mother, brother, relative: I have none to call my own.
I've forsaken both God, and the family's honor: what should I do?
I've sat near the holy ones, and I've lost shame before the people.
I've torn my scarf into shreds; I'm all wrapped up in a blanket.
I took off my finery of pearls and coral, and strung a garland of wildwood flowers.
With my tears, I watered the creeper of love that I planted;
Now the creeper has grown spread all over, and borne the fruit of bliss.
The churner of the milk churned with great love.
When I took out the butter, no need to drink any buttermilk.
I came for the sake of love-devotion; seeing the world, I wept.
Mira is the maidservant of the Mountain-Holder:
Now with love He takes me across to the further shore.

The Lucky Cat

i've seen this
black cat that walked at night
amidst the busy
city road
passing straight
one speedy car to
another
without fear and never
crushed

i've seen her eyes
unruffled
her feet so nimble and light
like a flash of
lightning
without the sound
of thunder

i've seen her sit upon a
rail up on the
13th floor
of this building
without any fear of
falling at all

i've seen her without
any worry at all
where to eat her
next meal
where to attract a prey
and take it
at bay

Feathers!

feathers on me
again and again
first to fly and now to earth rest
enable me to get ready
and carried me through you
anywhere there are feathers
like you said!
in me in you!

a very strange and intoxicating feeling
afterwards, that you traced my body
maybe i have gasp, of some lack of air!
in high feather, full feathers
you will be writhing with ecstacy
Very pleasurable for me
I feel extremely good
you make me a path a invisible way

eagle feathers very powerful
sound bird feathers very delicate
for tight places or open places
make his sound so soft
Ah! My God! ! !
give me the name of that medicine!
Feathers on me!
Feathers on you!

Closeness

your hand
entwined to my hand

your hair under my chin
your head resting on my chest

you smell my breath
there is no sound from your mouth

you close your eyes and see some trees
and ponds and waterfalls

and birds and clouds and flowers blooming
over a field of green grass

and butterflies and bees
the air you feel is as fresh as the scent of our skins

i caress your arms you let my hands go
you touch my face and then you look at me

we kiss and then we both melt
in paradise.

Casually I Raise My Head Into The Skies

casually i raise my head to the skies

&

casually i raise my head to the skies
bereft of thoughts in gloom-
yes, i get my enlightenment
and my disease is dispelled-
there above amidst the white clouds
the orphaned moon flake sobs in sorrow-
a few days ago it was the queen of the night
with silver-plated smile priding amidst the stars-
life is never ever smooth and song-full;
one day beautiful and brilliant and brimming with thoughts
the next day drier more than a desert fuming emptiness-
yes, i am reminded of 'shakespeare's lines
'books in brooks and sermons in stones'!
