Why
Why
did I like
the highways
and the byways
with their
cheap
lodgings
so very much?
I liked
to look out
through
the frosted
windows
from
the heated
rooms.

Look Through Any Windows
Look through any windows, yeah
What do you see?
Smiling faces all around
Rushing through the busy town
Where do they go?
Moving on their way
Walking down the highways and the byways
Where do they go?
Moving on their way
Are people with their shy ways and their sly ways
You can see the little children all around
You can see the little ladies in their gowns
When you look through any windows, yeah
Any time a day
See the drivers on the roads
Button down their heavy loads
Where do they go?
Moving on their way
A-driving down the highways and the byways
Where do they go?
Moving on their way
Are drivers with their shy ways and their sly ways
You can see the little children all around
You can see the little ladies in their gowns
When you look through any windows, yeah
What do you see?
Smiling faces all around
Rushing down the busy town
Moving on their way (3x)
Ooh? moving on their way (3x)
Where do they go? (4x)
Ooh?

Wistfully Watching
They explore the world
through windows,
church windows,
school windows,
two up, two down windows,
castle windows,
large windows,
small windows.
They see it all,
from blameless to guilty,
from noble to treacherous,
through windows.
From skyscraper windows,
to basement flat windows,
from paupers windows,
and palace windows
they watch, absorb, suck it in.
Later when they have grown
they will remember,
try to empathise,
rationalise
decipher the coded metaphors,
but some day
they will be demoralised
by the windows of life.
There they sit __ wistfully watching __
the children
of our times.

Come Little Sister
This is the age of the electric transaction
Come on little sister, let me show you around
This is the age of the impersonal inquiry
This is the age of the manwomanman
This is the age of the newnude discovery
of the highways and low-ways and byways of life
This is the age of the instant impaction
and the ever-pervasive highlowhigh
Come little sister
and let me show you the cheap tricks
Let me show you the way that I got mine
Come little sister and we’ll survive
We’ll survive the upcoming nuclear blast
Come on my sister
Let’s ride the fast train
Muse with commuters and grin at our sin
Leave this busted city in the rust and our dust
And all it takes is a quick flash in time
Look at the poster boards flashing the windows
Look at who’s getting to the top of the heap
Look at who’s sold off their souls to the devil
for a moment of glory
on the golden train ride
Passing the age of the newer discovery
rounding the bend of technology’s fast face
leaping headlong into the arms of some future
burying the past in the unmarked graves
Hey come little sister
Say what you’re thinking?
You’re kind of quiet sitting there hair all ablaze
Fire in your eyes for the storms of tomorrow
Will you be ready when they come to collect the tickets?
Oh little sister you stir my soul
Will you venture with me on the clickety-clack?
Will you send me a message down from heaven
When all of our promises lie heaped in a stack?
I have a ticket to nowhere sweet little sister
And you hold the one true promissory note
Your wide eyes see what I cannot envision
as you and I fly through this glistening night

The Abrupt Leave
As I stare out my office window
I ponder when I should leave
The row of pines
Along the autobahn like speedway
Cars fly by
Raceway on my mind
Baseball, backyard picnics
A memory
I want to travel
New highways and byways
To see my new friend
We'll meet half-way
Where our hearts will mend
Just a few days
To get away
Solace for me
With my new pal
Penning together
My medicine
To prosper
To live, well
Just live

Don’t be cheap
Buy not a thing because it’s cheap.
Don’t let others make you cheap.
To be greedy is to be cheap.
To be selfish is to be cheap.
To poke your nose is a cheap thing.
Don’t be cheap; better be poor.

Chain Gang Medley
Chain Gang - Written by - Sam Cooke
He Don't Love You - Written by - J. Butler, C. Mayfield & C. Carter
Searchin' - Written by - Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller
That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang
That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang
All day long they work so hard till the sun is goin' down
Working on the highways and byways and wearin', wearin' a frown
Hear them moanin' their lives away
Then you hear somebody say
That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang
That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang
He don't love you, like I love you
If he did he wouldn't break your heart
He don't love you, like I love you
He's trying to tear us apart
Gonna find her, I'm gonna find her, I'm gonna find her
Oh, if I have to climb a mountain, you know I will
And if I have to swim a river, you know I will
And I might find her hidin' up on Blueberry Hill
How am I gonna find her, child, you know I will
Cause I'm goin' searchin'
I'm goin' searchin'
Searchin' everywhere
Just like some Northwest Mountie
That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang
That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang
All day long they work so hard till the sun is goin' down
Working on the highways and byways and wearin', wearin' a frown
Hear them moanin' their lives away
Then you hear somebody say
That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang
That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang
That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang (5 x's)

Funny Face
Youre walking round in my memory
That only gets stronger and stronger
Smudged mascara and pill-shaped eyes
Everything you want was bought with lies.
But what can I do about it
The say you wont last any longer
All the gates of love you wont walk through
The only gates you see are colored blue.
I see you peering through frosted windows
Eyes dont smile, all they do is cry
Funny face, shes all right
Funny face, shes all right
Funny face, shes all right
Oh how can I live without her
The doctors wont let me see her
But I can catch a glimpse through the doorway
Of the girl that I love and care for
I see you peering through frosted windows
Eyes dont smile, all they do is cry
Funny face, shes all right
Funny face, shes all right
Funny face, shes all right

Accelerate It...And, Go!
Heated with a trivial steaming,
Choking up your motor on!
Sitting with your feelings overloading,
With your motor on!
Accelerate and go.
Roll down your windows,
And...
Let the air remove the fool in you.
Heated with a trivial steaming,
Choking up your motor on!
Sitting with your feelings overloading,
With your motor on!
Accelerate and go.
Roll down your windows,
And...
Let the air remove the fool in you.
Accelerate and go.
Roll down your windows,
And...
Let the air remove the fool in you.
Roll down your windows,
And...
Let the air remove the fool in you.
Heated with a trivial steaming,
Choking up your motor on!
Sitting with your feelings overloading,
With your motor on!
Roll down your windows,
And...
Let the air remove the fool in you.

Accelerate it...
And, go!

Spring Carol
WHEN loud by landside streamlets gush,
And clear in the greenwood quires the thrush,
With sun on the meadows
And songs in the shadows
Comes again to me
The gift of the tongues of the lea,
The gift of the tongues of meadows.
Straightway my olden heart returns
And dances with the dancing burns;
It sings with the sparrows;
To the rain and the (grimy) barrows
Sings my heart aloud -
To the silver-bellied cloud,
To the silver rainy arrows.
It bears the song of the skylark down,
And it hears the singing of the town;
And youth on the highways
And lovers in byways
Follows and sees:
And hearkens the song of the leas
And sings the songs of the highways.
So when the earth is alive with gods,
And the lusty ploughman breaks the sod,
And the grass sings in the meadows,
And the flowers smile in the shadows,
Sits my heart at ease,
Hearing the song of the leas,
Singing the songs of the meadows.

The Road
Highways and dancehalls
A good song takes you far
Your write about the moon
And you dream about the stars
Blues in old motel rooms
Girls in daddys car
You sing about the nights
And you laugh about the scars
Coffee in the morning cocaine afternoons
You talk about the weather
And you grin about the rooms
Phone calls long distance
To tell how youve been
Forget about the losses, you exaggerate the wins
And when you stop to let em know
Youve got it down
Its just another town along the road
The ladies come to see you
If your name still rings a bell
They give you damn near nothin
And theyll say they knew you well
So you tell em youll remember
But they know its just a game
And along the way their faces
All begin to look the same
And when you stop to let em know
You got it down
Its just another town along the road
Well it isnt for the money
And its only for a while
You stalk about the rooms
And you roll away the miles
Gamblers in the neon, clinging to guitars
Youre right about the moon
But youre wrong about the stars
And when you stop to let em know
You got it down
Its just another town along the way

Villa Pauline
But, ah! before he came
You were only a name:
Four little rooms and a cupboard
Without a bone,
And I was alone!
Now with your windows wide
Everything from outside
Of sun and flower and loveliness
Comes in to hide,
To play, to laugh on the stairs,
To catch unawares
Our childish happiness,
And to glide
Through the four little rooms on tip-toe
With lifted finger,
Pretending we shall not know When the shutters are shut
That they still linger
Long, long after.
Lying close in the dark
He says to me: "Hark,
Isn't that laughter?"

From Plains To Camps Of Diseases
A plains dweller, a borderer of convictions,
Habitant of affairs too homely and city.
A rate-payer of lodgings, with the harmful rooms,
Parks of delight surround him, and me.
Now, a sanatorium so fixed to fight,
A camp of hellfire, with diseases, too much beehive,
Covert actions of the main play, heard from afar,
Actions require words, now, needing maintenance.

Cracked Up Passion
Cracked dry lips,
Clinging to each other.
Fiercely
where two couple of curious hands
roam all around
two heated bodies.
Heated feelings, heated passion.
Passion to know,
Passion to discover,
To explore,
To take and give pleasure,
To be loved
and to love.

Unemployment Shame
Rows and rows of boxes
All of them the same
With rooms and rooms of people
Each without a name
Hearts that beat, though breaking
And smiles that mask the pain
Of fading hopes of sunshine
Through windows drenched with rain.
Once lovers, now not speaking
Except to lay the blame
For broken dreams and the poverty
Of unemployment shame.
Empty cupboards and drunken sleep
Are all part of the game
But hungry babies wake them still
On mornings all the same.

Before Spring
FARE you well, who love the highways,
Love the cities, tall and bright,
For the forest ways are my ways,
And the birds' songs my delight,
And the stars in river byways
Are my only lamps by night.
I shall see the Spring awaking
While you think it winter still,
Watch the brittle ice forsaking
Edge of marsh and pool and rill,
And the little willows making
Yellow mists against the hill.
Go you to the things you care for,
Violins with trembling string,
Jewels that men do and dare for,
Every lovely, man-wrought thing;
They have caught your spirit, therefore
You have left me ere the Spring.

Don't let the windows of your home be so small that the light of the sun cannot enter your rooms.
Bowery Afternoon
Drab discoloration
Of faces, façades, pawn-shops,
Second-hand clothing,
Smoky and fly-blown glass of lunch-rooms,
Odors of rancid life…
Deadly uniformity
Of eyes and windows
Alike devoid of light…
Holes wherein life scratches -
Mangy life
Nosing to the gutter's end…
Show-rooms and mimic pillars
Flaunting out of their gaudy vestibules
Bosoms and posturing thighs…
Over all the Elevated
Droning like a bloated fly.

Plausibilities
Of all the statements,
In exchanged remarks made...
Are the ones most retainable
And heightens eyebrows arched.
Those are diced with spice and scandalous.
Plausibilities whispered over crumpets and tea.
Poured over rumors...
With frosted spearmint tips.
As these knitters giggle,
In convalescent circles.
After lurking from separate rooms,
In wheelchairs waiting...
For a push and conversation,
To begin again sensations!
