The Soldier’s Death

The day was o’er, and in their tent the weaned victors met,
In wine and social gaiety the carnage to forget.
The merry laugh and sparkling jest, the pleasant tale were there—
Each heart was free and gladsome then, each brow devoid of care.

Yet one was absent from the board who ever was the first
In every joyous, festive scene, in every mirthful burst;
He also was the first to dare each perilous command,
To rush on danger—yet was he the youngest of the band.

Upon the battle-field he lay a damp and fearful grave;
His right hand grasped the cherished flag—the flag he died to save;
While the cold stars shone calmly down on heaps of fallen dead,
And their pale light a halo cast round that fair sleeper’s head.

Say, was there none o’er that young chief to shed one single tear,
To sorrow o’er the end of his untimely stopt career?
Yes, but alas! the boundless sea its foam and crested wave,
Lay then between those beings dear and his cold, cheerless grave.

With all a mother’s doting love a mother yearned for him,
And watching for his quick return, a sister’s eye grew dim,
And, dearer still, a gentle girl, his fair affianced bride,—
And yet, with all these loving ones, unfriended, had he died.

No woman’s low, sweet voice was near one soothing word to say
Or gentle hand from his cold brow to wipe the damps away;
But yet why should we grieve for him, that hero gallant, brave?
His was a soldier’s glorious death, a soldier’s glorious grave!

Red, Sparkling Wine

I Have Seen A Sight
Of a Man Falling Down …
… it wasn’t for a Fight
… but it was due to what He’d Found …

… Red Sparkling Wine… Does It Every Time
Red Sparkling Wine… She Should Be A Crime …
Red Sparkling Wine…

She Starts out – Flowing – Smooth
Gets in Your Blood – Then You got Somethin’ to Prove!
You Chase Her Intoxicating Perfume

Red Sparkling Wine… Feeling So Sublime …

… Sweet from the Vine, but She ain’t Vintage
Make You Loose Your Mind and Your Hard-Earned Wages

You ain’t in Love! … just in a Bottle of Booze …

Ultimately Paranoid

I wanted to rely on my aunts
If at all I lose my parents.
I weaned away.

I depended on brothers and sisters,
Who should have come to my rescue.
I weaned away.

I bent on my in-laws,
Who I thought would bail me out.
I weaned away.

I was blind on many upper kin
To seek for their help, while with sins.
I weaned away.

I bet on my own offspring,
On whom I could recline, on senescence.
I weaned away.

I landed in asylum,
Where I am not alone but lonely.
I wean not anymore.

I grew paranoid,
Repenting the guilt and lamenting the wastes
To ever wean away.

Sonnet: Laughter

If we can laugh, our heart-aches disappear!
Our minds become freed off tensions and stress;
If we make others laugh, they lose their fear,
And become dear, starting to us caress.

Laughter is good for both the young and old;
Laughter can turn a foe into a friend;
Laughter can help forget our woes, be bold;
Laughter can bring to grief, an early end.

Laughter is life’s most precious medicine;
Laughter is soothing balm for all our ills;
Laughter is euphoric much more than wine,
Causing no harm to one/ increasing bills.
Then laugh and be merry, whenever you can,
For, that’s the way to live life better, man.

Hic Jacet

The coroner's merry little children
Have such twinkling brown eyes.
Their father is not of gay men
And their mother jocular in no wise,
Yet the coroner's merry little children
Laugh so easily.

They laugh because they prosper.
Fruit for them is upon all branches.
Lo! how they jibe at loss, for
Kind heaven fills their little paunches!
It's the coroner's merry, merry children
Who laugh so easily.

Laugh…….

We laugh today; we'll laugh tomorrow
Over today's joy and yesterday's sorrow
Nothing is permanent, nothing is forever
So we laugh to forget and with sorrow sever
From our happiness' mirth to laugh in play
So merry is the soul who laughs away
The pain life brings, the pain of being
Laughing till joy from pain is fleeing
To where? Our panacea of hearty laugh
I guess it's better than pain's angry wrath
Laugh…….

The Philosophic Pill

I've wisdom from the East and from the West,
That's subject to no academic rule;
You may find it in the jeering of a jest,
Or distill it from the folly of a fool.
I can teach you with a quip, if I've a mind;
I can trick you into learning with a laugh;
Oh, winnow all my folly, and you'll find
A grain or two of truth among the chaff!

I can set a braggart quailing with a quip,
The upstart I can wither with a whim;
He may wear a merry laugh upon his lip,
But his laughter has an echo that is grim.
When they've offered to the world in merry guise,
Unpleasant truths are swallowed with a will -
For he who'd make his fellow-creatures wise
Should always gild the philosophic pill!

Laughing Song

When the green woods laugh with the voice of joy,
And the dimpling stream runs laughing by;
When the air does laugh with our merry wit,
And the green hill laughs with the noise of it;

When the meadows laugh with lively green,
And the grasshopper laughs in the merry scene,
When Mary and Susan and Emily
With their sweet round mouths sing ‘Ha, Ha, He!’

When the painted birds laugh in the shade,
Where our table with cherries and nuts is spread,
Come live, and be merry, and join with me,
To sing the sweet chorus of ‘Ha, Ha, He!’

My Lonely Sad Eyes

(transcribed from them's them again album, 1966)
Fill me my cup
And i'll drink your sparkling wine
Pretending everything is fine
Till i see your sad eyes
Throw me a kiss
Across a crowded room
Some sunny windswept afternoon
There's none too soon for me to miss
My sad eyes
Woh oh ou, not bad eyes
A glad eyes, but you my sad eyes
Fortunate and free
And there go you and i
Between the other sky
But who are you and i
To wonder why we do so
My sad eyes - lonely
Oh what a story
Come on in all it's glory
This song that i sing in everything
For you my sad eyes
You'd better fill me my cup
And i'll drink your sparkling wine
Pretending everything is fine
Till i see your sad eyes
Woh oh ou, not bad eyes

Sparkling wine and blood

How should I know,
that red J Le Roux sparkling wine
and blood has the same colour.

The one foams
sparkling out of a beautiful bottle
and the other gushes out of an artery or drips
and comes from the heart.

Yesterday, it feels half a life ago,
there was grape moisture
that came from a bottle
while love was blooming in full.

Today the taste is still in my mouth,
there are still a few blocks of chocolate left
and I wonder when
we are going to eat the potato chips
and when you are gone,
it’s as if nothing here is right
and I loose my heart
bit by bit
with red blood.

If I Laugh

If I laugh just a little bit
Maybe I can forget the chance
That I didnt have to know you
And live in peace, in peace
If I laugh just a little bit
Maybe I can forget the plans that
I didnt use to get you
At home -- with me -- alone
If I laugh just a little bit
Maybe I can recall the way
That I used to be, before you
And sleep at night -- and dream
If I laugh, baby if I laugh
Just a little bit --

A Glee For Winter

HENCE, rude Winter! crabbed old fellow,
Never merry, never mellow!
Well-a-day! in rain and snow
What will keep one’s heart aglow?
Groups of kinsmen, old and young,
Oldest they old friends among;
Groups of friends, so old and true
That they seem our kinsmen too;
These all merry all together
Charm away chill Winter weather.

What will kill this dull old fellow?
Ale that ’s bright, and wine that ’s mellow!
Dear old songs for ever new;
Some true love, and laughter too;
Pleasant wit, and harmless fun,
And a dance when day is done.
Music, friends so true and tried,
Whisper’d love by warm fireside,
Mirth at all times all together,
Make sweet May of Winter weather.

Brantford

In these sketches of towns in Western Ontario, we are not vain enough
to suppose that because we have produced some rhymes thereon
that said rhymes are poetry. If we furnish an occasional poetic gleam,
like a dewdropp sparkling in the sun, it is all we dare hope for.

Brantford as thriving city's famed,
And after Indian chief is named ;
And here the sparkling Grand river,
It doth flow a joy forever.

Campbell, he sang a dismal tale
Of horrors of Wyonming's vale;
The tale one's mind doth ever haunt,
The cruelties of monster Brant.

But the chief's son to England went
And Campbell to him did lament,
And all the tale he did recant
About cruel butcheries of Brant.

Now pleasant thoughts it doth awake,
When Brantford thinks of her namesake ;
She evermore with pride will chant
The bold, heroic name of Brant.

We sing of two great Indian names,
Tecumseh on the banks of Thames,
And the Grand River it doth vaunt
Of the historic name of Brant.

The city's pride it doth find vent
In building him a monument,
And Indians will proudly stalk
Past memorial of great Mohawk.

We Wish You A Merry Christmas

So we drive as fast as we can go
through the black night black ice and the snow
until we see the street signs and we know
we are coming home
Good tidings we bring
to you and your kin
Good tidings for Christmas
and a happy new year
we wish you a merry Christmas
we wish you a merry Christmas
we wish you a merry Christmas
and a happy new year
we wish you a merry Christmas
we wish you a merry Christmas
we wish you a merry Christmas
and a happy new year
And so when the words we sing are gone
Pray God's blessing continues on
and you laugh and compliment this
merry Christmas
Good tidings we bring
to you and your kin
Good tidings for Christmas
and a happy new year
we wish you a merry Christmas
we wish you a merry Christmas
we wish you a merry Christmas
and a happy new year
we wish you a merry Christmas

Red, Red Wine

Written by: neil diamond
Red, red wine
Go to my head
Make me forget that i
Still need her so
Red, red wine
Its up to you
All I can do, Ive done
But memories wont go
No, memories wont go
Id have sworn
That with time
Thoughts of you
Would leave my head
I was wrong
And I find
Just one thing
Makes me forget
Red, red wine
Stay close to me
Dont let me be alone
Its tearing apart
My blue, blue heart

A Lament

The merry merry lark was up and singing,
And the hare was out and feeding on the lea;
And the merry merry bells below were ringing,
When my child's laugh rang through me.

Now the hare is snared and dead beside the snow-yard,
And the lark beside the dreary winter sea;
And the baby in his cradle in the churchyard
Sleeps sound till the bell brings me.
