An Inscrutable Silence

The no message message
A space without a frame
No sound or a syllable
leaving behind a name

Inscrutable silence
Wrong number didn't dare?
Nothing in particular
Though someone had been there...

For they tried more than once,
To see if I was home,
I was of course, they knew it
By not answering the phone...

Perhaps it was destiny
I left hanging on the line,
'Why didn't you answer?
We called time after time'

'We could not reach you
So we gave up the cause,
Is misery the resting place
You go to just because...?

'No' I tried to defend
The weakness in my ego
Hesitating to answer
The calling of long ago...

'You will have to explain someday
And face yourself, 'then,
The voice added:
'You will have to face us as well'...

'I know, ' I said, 'I was
The blank space on the tape,
The one who wished to say something
No recording device could ever replay!

Calling You

I had a dream that you stood right in front of me
And called to me in black and white
Though I could see you / I couldnt reach you
You faded into the light
And when the sun turns a dream to reality
Im left with such an empty space
I feel your spirit / know that Im near it
I swear I can see your face
Hear me calling you / calling you
But you just dont seem to answer anymore
Am I supposed to pretend I dont feel the pain
Like it happened only yesterday
No use in trying / to stop the crying
I cant make it go away
Hear me calling you / calling you
But you just dont seem to answer anymore
Im calling you / calling you
And Im afraid you wont answer anymore
Where is the healing you promised me
Maybe this feeling will burn in me forever
Hear me calling you / calling you
But you just dont seem to answer anymore
Im calling you / calling you
And Im afraid you wont answer anymore
Calling you and Im afraid that you wont answer anymore

Winter Of Discontent

The phone rang a day before Christmas a message I knew would come
but would not like to hear. Mother had died and there was a great haste
now before the festive season. Yet in my despair I picked up the phone
and rang her number in the hope it had all been a dreadful mistake…any
minute now she will answer be glad to hear my voice; and she would tell
me I’m susceptible to cold and remember to wear a scarf.
Fully awake I rushed to the airport, sorry fully booked till after Christmas.
“Please if there is a cancellation ring me.” The phone didn’t ring.
When I finally got there snow had covered flowers and her name was not
yet carved on a stone. This emptiness, this hole in my heart, I knew it had
to happen one day, but not now not ever. At her home they were busy
dividing her things. No I didn’t want anything only her reading glasses,
she had thought me how to read. A life had ended and for the first time in
my life I knew how it felt like to be alone under a cold Nordic sky.

Had To Phone Ya

Had to phone ya
Had to phone ya just to talk to you
Had to phone ya just to tell ya I was missing you
It lifts my spirits every single time
Sometimes youre busy for awhile
But when you get through
It makes me smile
A-when I phone ya
Californias not so far away
Youre not alone ya know Im only just a dial away
I visualize that youre looking fine
Feels so good when you come on the line
You (you) you (you) you (you) you (you)
You (you) you (you) you (you) you (you)
You (you) you (you) you (you) you (you)
You (you) you (you) you (you)
Come on
Come on and answer the phone
Come on come on
(I hope your home)
Come on and answer the phone
Come on come on
(I hope your home)
Come on and answer the phone
Come on come on
(I hope your home)
Come on and answer the phone
Come on come on
(I hope your home)
Come on and answer the phone
Come on come on
(I hope your home)
Come on and answer the phone
Come on come on
(hello, hey brian!)
(I hope your home)

Giving and Receiving-Taking and Empty

She carried his memory with her-
wore it like a necklace.

It was
embedded in her body-
every place he had touched-
issued silent body sighs
asking her to go back to him,
to have him touch her that way again.

It was her he'd kissed
her loins, her heart, all caressed-
all made love to
by him.

She would have forgotten
but her body did not
-could not.

Her body had melted in the hot;
rose again and again
in the bubbling up
to remind her of what it missed.
..
She sometimes times would imitate
his touch
but her body was not consoled.

She could have her mind
imagine his touch
but the mind was not good enough
to compare with the real thing.

She over-reacted on city streets when
people accidently bumped her;
another body close
caused memories to stir..

She held her books close;
placed them flat against her breasts

absent-mindedly
to emulate his touch.

She slept in a ball to gain warmth
from her own thighs
held close to her.

She was an open book.
Every page missed him.

Her mind could not focus
amid those body cries
coming in the still night.

She could not see
in her midnight stumblings
wandering her own room
blind body seeking
trembling heart seeking
what it remembered
but no longer had.

Body rules the night
and mind rules the day
but nigh-time lasts an eternity
and knows how to cry.

She reached for the phone.
It was a call. Only a call.

Just to hear his voice and then she would hang up.
Maybe that would reduce the yearning between her legs.

Just a little thing.
She set aside the little toys she had bought unused.
Maybe they would help; maybe not.
But not now.

Her hand was attached to her body
and her body took charge
directed the hand, dialing the number,
butterflies fluttering in the pit of her stomach.
Breath bated, not breathing, she was riveted
awaiting the sound of his voice.
It came with a big 'hello'

But
But, it was only the answering machine.
She relaxed listening to every syllable. 'I am not here right now but I would like to know that you called. Leave your name and number and I will get back to as soon as I can'

Even his voice mail message made her remember his caring
hearing 'I will get back to you as soon as I can.'

He was like that. He was always willing, willing to meet you half-way in everything. He made love that way too. He was the giver and she was the taker.

Before him she had been with Bart.
Bart the Taker. He took out of bed
and he took in bed.
He never gave out of bed and he never gave in bed either.
Bart left you empty and then rolled over and went to sleep.

So she became a taker, saying that she would not be taken from again like that.

So she took from Joel
because she felt it was her turn
and he was so willing to give.
He gave and he gave and she took.
The day came he ceased wanting to give
grew tired of of her demands, of her traffic cop attitude in bed
and was gone. Didn't answer phone calls.
Avoided her, offered only silence.

She hung up trying slowly
with her hand
trying
to send him the message through the hung-up phone
that she had changed-
that she was now able to give..

But he was not there to see,
or to hear her,
to feel the change that she had achieved.
Taking too much
had left her empty.
and giving
even when she wanted to
did not feel real
even when she desperately
wanted to.

Odyssey

From a far off galaxy, I hear you calling me
We are on an odyssey
Through the realms of time and space
In that enchanted place
You and I come face to face
Once upon not yet, long ago someday
Countless times weve met, met along the way
Through the luminescent night
On beams of neon light
You and I in wing-ged flight
As we cross the starry sea, powered by what we see
Now and then, the victory
Chorus
Theres a child in a sundress
Looking at a rainy sky
Theres a place in the desert
Where an ocean once danced by
Theres a song in the silence
Weaving in and out of time
We are notes in the music
Searching for remembered rhyme
On a mountain high somewhere
Where only heroes dare
Stand the stallion and the mare
We have been and we shall be each others destiny
One anothers odyssey
Chorus
Weve met along the way....
Weve met along the way

Only Time Will Tell

[transcribed by chris w]
Only time will tell
By: jimmy buffett
1996
Scales and clocks just cant be trusted
Keys and locks are destined to be busted
Metaphors were never made for keeping score
And Im feeling for the sound of time
Hoo hoo hoo hoo
Hoo hoo hoo hoo
Hoo hoo hoo hoo
Hoo hoo hoo hoo
Is it the answer or just a suggestion
Is love what we truly want or merely a protection
Is this music made to last or crumble like a shell
Is there heaven here on earth or is this really hell
Only time will tell if I am right or I am wrong
Only time will tell is there a message in this song
Will it ever make sense will it ever ring a bell
Only time will tell
Hoo hoo hoo hoo
Hoo hoo hoo hoo
Hoo hoo hoo hoo
Hoo hoo hoo hoo
Are we destined to be ruled by a bunch of old white men
Who compare the world to football and are programmed to defend
Id like to try a princess or a non-terrestrial
Who is neither boast nor bashful is there really such a girl
Only time will tell if I am right or I am wrong
Only time will tell is there a message in this song
Will it ever make sense will it ever ring a bell
Only time will tell
I woke up this morning feeling absolutely grand
For nearly half a century Ive been singing in a band
Id like to think Ill make it to two thousand and one
Will the party be at my house God I wonder who will come
Only time will tell if I am right or I am wrong
Only time will tell is there a message in this song
Will it ever make sense will it ever ring a bell
Only time will tell
Only time will tell if I am right or I am wrong
Only time will tell is there a message in this song
Will it ever make sense on this crazy carousel
Only time will tell
Hoo hoo hoo hoo
Hoo hoo hoo hoo
Hoo hoo hoo hoo
Hoo hoo hoo hoo
Hoo hoo hoo hoo
Hoo hoo hoo hoo
Hoo hoo hoo hoo
Hoo hoo hoo hoo
Only time will tell

Long Way From Home

(coverdale)
I would do anything I could to be near you,
Walk all night in the pouring rain
To be at your side
My heart is aching for love,
My bodys shaking with desire
Believe me, baby, when I say
I will drink you dry
I would do anything to be near you,
Youre everything any man could claim
I see your face in the night,
I hear you calling my name
But, its a long long way from home,
Im just trying to get a message to you,
Its a long long way from home,
An I dont know what Im gonna do
Id been looking for love for so long when I found you,
Too many years I walked alone
When I touch you inside I feel you burning me with fire,
Believe me baby when I say
I will feed the flame
I would do anything to be near you,
Walk all night in the pouring rain
I see your face in the night,
I hear you calling my name
But, its a long long way from home,
Im just trying to get a message to you,
Its a long long way from home,
An I dont know what Im gonna do
I would do anything to be near you,
Youre everything any man could claim
I see your face in the night,
I hear you calling my name
But, its a long long way from home,
Im just trying to get a message to you,
Its a long long way from home,
An I dont know what Im gonna do
I would do anything I could to be near you,
Check in on any night time flight, I dont mind
My heart is aching for love,
My bodys shaking with desire
Believe me baby when I say
I will drink you dry
I would do anything to be near you,
Walk all night in the pouring rain
I see your face in the night,
I hear you calling my name
But, its a long long way from home,
Im just trying to get a message to you,
Its a long long way from home,
An I dont know what Im gonna do
Its a long long way from home,
Im just trying to get a message to you,
Its a long long way from home,
An I dont know what Im gonna do,
Its a long long way from home

Cordova

words and music by amy ray
The volunteers come for your prayers
and some souvenirs,
With ivory skin and boycott lessons
Year after year.
Well I'm tracing your face up in the space of the bottom bunk,
Oh Cordova.
Where I cried and I cried,
I knew I was trading on things that I didn't have,
The things that I didn't have.
Now you come to me
With revolution's infidelity,
With blacklisted friends and tupperware kin,
And your big history.
Well I'm tracing your face up in the space of the bottom bunk,
Oh Cordova.
Where I cried and I cried,
I knew I was trading on things that I didn't have,
The things that I didn't have.
I memorize the lullabies
of dwindling lives.
The lay of the land, the touch of each hand
We lose by and by.
I'm tracing your face up in the space of the bottom bunk,
Oh Cordova.
Where I cried and I cried,
I knew I was trading on things that I didn't have,
The things that I didn't have.

Pain Of Existence Without.....

It was pain of existence without your phone calls.....
This pain was not related to time, as time moved on.....
but the pain remained, pain and more pain....
without a phone call from you........
Time started moving, but there was no phone call, , , , , ,
I was lost with the acute awareness of this great pain.....
pain and more pain......
I wish I could tell you how much your phone calls mean to me, , , , ,
what if we have not met, what if we have not seen each other
but dear your phone call is what makes me pull through my day....
your voice is a magic to me, it is music to my ears....
but dear you never called.... and the pain remains...
The pain reminds me of the wonderful times we had....
the long phone calls.... your voice, your silence, , your moans
all this was so wonderful, which meant so much to me....
but dear you never called........
come back and call me dear...... and tell me how much I mean to you
call me once my love........
I wait for your magic voice, for all wonderful things you tell me....
for all the beautiful moments over phone we had.......
I wait with great pain, pain and pain.....
Just to hear you..... or get a message from you
Your messages are my breakfast, my dinner, , , ,
I sleep thinking of you hearing you, reading you...
I wake up to read your message..........
But dear you never called you never messaged....
come back just once my love come back
I just want to tell how much I miss your voice.............

True Story

As I walked home the other night,
I looked up to the sky.
It hit me like a light in the head
He showed me of the world
In a different way.
Oh, Ill never be the same.
[this is space-sector calling] are you talking to me?
[we have a message for you] I could not help but listen.
[children of earth must all become] one family.
[your leaders will not listen] but what can I do?
[people will listen to you] Im just a poor fool,
[reach out and help us and] make them understand.
A place for everyone,
In their sacred plan.
Living in all lands.
Ill never turn away,
Now my life has changed,
Ill never be the same.
[this is space-sector calling] are you talking to me?
[we have a message for you] I could not help but listen.
[children of earth must all become] one family.
[your leaders will not listen] but what can I do?
[people will listen to you] Im just a poor fool,
[reach out and help us and] make them understand.
[this is space-sector calling] are you talking to me?
[we have a message for you] oh what can it be?
[children of earth must all become] one family.
[your leaders will not listen] but what can I do?
[people will listen to you] Im just a poor fool,
[reach out and help us and] make them understand.

She Came In Through Bathroom Window

She came in through the bathroom window
Protected by a silver spoon
But now she sucks her thumb and wanders
By the banks of her own lagoon
Didn't anybody tell her?
Didn't anybody see?
Sunday's on the phone to Monday
Tuesday's on the phone to me
She said she'd always been a dancer
She worked at 15 clubs a day
And though she thought I knew the answer
Well I knew what I could not say
And so I quit the police department
And got myself a steady job
And though she tried her best to help me
She could steal but she could not rob
Didn't anybody tell her?
Didn't anybody see?
Sunday's on the phone to Monday
Tuesday's on the phone to me
Oh yeah

When I answer the phone

The phone is ringing
I can just look at the clock
And know it's you

You always call
Around the same time
Your so predictable

I let the answering machine answer it
Because I don't feel like getting yelled at just yet
So you leave a stupid random message
That always seem to make me smile

Then the next time you call back
I answer it and you make me cry
You always seem to bring me down
And the worst part of it
Is that I think it makes you happy

So after we're done talking
I sit alone and cry
I should of known better
Not to answer the phone
When you call

But all my friends hear
those stupid random messages
And tell me how funny you are
And how lucky I am to have you around

But your not funny
And I'm not lucky to have you around
No one see's how badly you treat me
When you think no one is around

I just want someone to see
How you really are
They think it's me that has the problem

When it's you that has the problem
But no one will see it
Because your such a great actor

Mom, You Didn't Know

Mom you didn't know
How hard it was for me to take this journey
Mom you didn't know it was a hard time in school
the fear of getting bullied,
the shame when I can't answer our teacher
the feeling of being isolated, alone, neglected
Mom you haven't knew that, you didn't know how i feel
But I couldn't just tell you
I know you had a lot of things to think of
I don't want to be an added burden to you
I love you Mom,
I hope you were there at those times
But its all okay Mom
It turned up to be okay
After all, there's God all the time
This is the best thing you did in my life
to make me know God
to let me grow in Him
I am stronger now, but not of my strength but of His
Everything was His arrangement
He probably had allowed you not to be with me most of the time that I may learn to trust on Him.
Mom it's okay you didn't know because now,
I'm trusting HIM.

A Voice From The West

What is the voice I hear
On the wind of the Western Sea?
Sentinel, listen from out Cape Clear
And say what the voice may be.
``'Tis a proud, free people calling loud to a people proud and free.

``And it says to them, `Kinsmen, hail!
We severed have been too long.
Now let us have done with a worn-out tale-
The tale of an ancient Wrong;
And our friendship last long as Love doth last,
and be stronger than Death is strong!'''

Answer them, ``Sons of the self-same race,
And blood of the self-same clan,
Let us speak with each other face to face,
And answer man to man;
And loyally love and trust each other as none but free men can.

``So fling them out to the breeze,
Shamrock, Thistle, and Rose!
And the Star-Spangled Banner unfurl with these,
A message to friends and foes,
Wherever the sails of peace are seen and wherever the war-wind blows.

``A message to bond and thrall to wake:
For wherever we come, we twain,
The throne of the tyrant shall rock and quake,
And his menace be void and vain;
For you are lords of a strong, young land, and we are lords of the main.''

Yes, this is the voice on the bluff March gale:
``We severed have been too long.
But now we have done with a worn-out tale,
The tale of an ancient Wrong;
And our friendship shall last long as Love doth last, and be stronger than Death is strong!''

Over You

Dont wanna be left behind left alone
Waiting for you to call me
Dont wanna have best of times haunting me
Underlining my heartache
Time heals but only time will tell if time heals
Leaving me free of the hold that you have on me
Over you how can I get
Over you must forget
The things you do
I just must get
Over you live my life again
Without you here
I talk to your answer phone its telling me
Please leave your number
Ill call when I get back home
When you hear the tone speak up and clearly
Time heals but only time will tell if time heals
But who do I turn to if you wont return my calls
Over you how can I get
Over you must forget
The things you do
I just must get
Over you live my life again
Without you here
I call your home and your answer phone
Tells me leave your number
Over you how can I get
Over you must forget
The things you do
I just must get
Over you live my life again
Without you here
Over you I just must get
Over you but how will I get
Over you I guess Ill get
Over you it may take some time getting
Over you I may never get
Over you just must get
Over you...

Home Calling

Home is calling,
trying to reach out to me.

The journey is over,
the war have met its end,
home is calling.

I will answer your call,
i will deliver your message to the most distant part of the world because i am your own.

Yours is so far fetch,
reaching out to the soul of the broken hearted,
i have wielded my mantle,
i have played my parts,
its time to respond to my home calling.

Like a burst of laughter amidst faces full of tears,
i will rejoice wholeheartedly to my home calling.
My heart is anxious,
my feet is ready,
the journey is set and my destination is precised.

Its so hard leaving you behind my love,
like a love song sang amidst foes,
am constantly heavy with your thought.

My home is calling me,
the beauty of its splendor is unbeatable,
i will cry no more for my home has finally found me,
let the earth rejoice once more because her son has finally respond to her home calling.

Grampa Was Strange (but I loved him)

When I was a lad
My grandpa always had
An adage for each and every situation

He’d rub his face,
Sagely gaze into space
As if in deep, focused concentration

Then he’d turn to me
And say “Well, Son you see
It’s a bit of a complication”

It didn’t seem to give him pause
About What my problem really was
His answer was the same without deviation

His answer to me
Always just confused me, you see
Yet could not have been proffered any kinder

His answer was always kinda funky
He’d say “never ask the monkey…
Son…Always ask the Organ grinder”

To this very day
I can honestly say
I don’t know what he meant
…But I loved him

Calling America

(somebody...)
Told her that there was a place like heaven
Across the water on a 747
Yeah, were living in
In a modern world.
And pretty soon shes really got the notion
Of flying out across the big blue ocean
Yeah, were living in
In a modern world.
Talk is cheap on satellite
But all I get is (static!)
Information, Im still here
Re-dial on automatic.
Chorus:
Calling america (cant get a message through)
Calling america (thats what she said to do)
Calling america (thats where she has to be)
Calling america (she left a number for me)
Calling america.
But Im just talking to a satellite
Twenty thousand miles up in the sky each night
Yeah, were living in
In a modern world.
All I had to do was pick up the phone
Im out in space, trying to talk to someone
Yeah, were living in
In a modern world.
She left a number I could call
But no ones there, no one at all
There must be something going wrong
That number just rings on and on.
Repeat chorus
Said shed call when shed been gone a while
Guess shes missing me across the miles
Yeah, were living in
In a modern world.
Repeat chorus
Calling america, calling america
Calling america, calling america...

Its your call, its her
Would you rather take it in the other room
Shes hangin on and so am i
Yeah, I know all about it dont act so surprised
Its time to end this game youre playin
Shes not the only one whos waitin on the line
Its your call
Its up to you
And I wont try to stop you if you go
But if you stay tell her goodbye
I cant take another minute
I cant stand another night
Of wondering if I even matter
Its something only you can answer
Heres the phone, its your call
Theres no easy way out this time
Cause I wont live this way
She called here to talk to you
With a message that I cant take
Oh, Ive got to know if I still matter
Its somethin only you can answer
Heres the phone, its your call
