Robert Louis Stevenson

De Hortis Julii Martialis

MY Martial owns a garden, famed to please,
Beyond the glades of the Hesperides;
Along Janiculum lies the chosen block
Where the cool grottos trench the hanging rock.
The moderate summit, something plain and bare,
Tastes overhead of a serener air;
And while the clouds besiege the vales below,
Keeps the clear heaven and doth with sunshine glow.
To the June stars that circle in the skies
The dainty roofs of that tall villa rise.
Hence do the seven imperial hills appear;
And you may view the whole of Rome from here;
Beyond, the Alban and the Tuscan hills;
And the cool groves and the cool falling rills,
Rubre Fidenae, and with virgin blood
Anointed once Perenna's orchard wood.
Thence the Flaminian, the Salarian way,
Stretch far broad below the dome of day;
And lo! the traveller toiling towards his home;
And all unheard, the chariot speeds to Rome!
For here no whisper of the wheels; and tho'
The Mulvian Bridge, above the Tiber's flow,
Hangs all in sight, and down the sacred stream
The sliding barges vanish like a dream,
The seaman's shrilling pipe not enters here,
Nor the rude cries of porters on the pier.
And if so rare the house, how rarer far
The welcome and the weal that therein are!
So free the access, the doors so widely thrown,
You half imagine all to be your own.

A Villa With Few Rooms

a villa with few rooms
rustic to the root and core
will I perching over a hill
want where the cool autumn comes to rest itself

and
where the cool autumn comes to rest itself
a fragrance strange abounds hangs all around
the air is wholesome like baking bread
or mutton or pudding:
the heart pumps blood serene
hate flees away invisible
and there is happiness

and
though the cool autumn comes to rest itself
in this agreeable place and home
yet
some-time yearn I too
for a long winter full of drizzling rain
morning and afternoon
then as the red dusk sets
thunder and lightning’s long fingers
over the hills above the village small
can I see, I want to see
from the casement as rain half-blinds
half-obstacles the view.

And then
The chill of the thunder-clap
The thrill in every marrow
I want to feel
And feeling this I feel
The richest and the happiest in this world.

Awhile the cool autumn cometh to rest itself.

Roman Girl's Song

Rome, Rome! thou art no more
As thou hast been!
On thy seven hills of yore
Thou satst a queen.

Thou hadst thy triumphs then
Purpling the street,
Leaders and sceptred men
Bow'd at thy feet.

They that thy mantle wore,
As gods were seen–
Rome, Rome! thou art no more
As thou hast been!

Rome! thine imperial brow
Never shall rise:
What hast thou left thee now?
Thou hast thy skies!

Blue, deeply blue, they are,
Gloriously bright!
Veiling thy wastes afar
With colour'd light.

Thou hast the sunset's glow,
Rome, for thy dower,
Flushing tall cypress-bough,
Temple and tower!

And all sweet sounds are thine,
Lovely to hear,
While night, o'er tomb and shrine,
Rests darkly clear.

Many a solemn hymn,
By starlight sung,
Sweeps thro' the arches dim,
Thy wrecks among.

Many a flute's low swell,
On thy soft air
Lingers, and loves to dwell
With summer there.

Thou hast the South's rich gift
Of sudden song,
A charmed fountain, swift,
Joyous, and strong.

Thou hast fair forms that move
With queenly tread;
Thou hast proud fanes above
Thy mighty dead.

Yet wears thy Tiber's shore
A mournful mien:
Rome, Rome! thou art no more
As thou hast been!

Cool

I got a penthouse in Manhattan
2 more in Malibu
I bought a '87 Cadillac Seville
Girl, I got a Mazerati 2
I wear diamonds on my fingers
I got a couple on my toes
I wear the finest perfume money can buy
It keeps me smellin' like a rose
If U wonder how I do it
There's just one simple rule
I'm just cool (Cool)
Oh oh - Honey, baby can't U see?
Girl, I'm so cool (Cool)
Ain't nobody bad like me, hey
(C-O-O-L) What's that spell?
(C-O-O-L)
I might dine in San Francisco
Dance all night in Rome
I go any freakin' place I want 2
And my lear jet brings me home (Listen darlin')
I got ladies by the dozens
I got money by the ton
Just ain't nobody better
Heaven knows that I'm the one
And it's all because of something
That I didn't learn in school
I'm just cool (Cool)
Cool - Honey, baby can't U see?
Girl, I'm so cool (Cool)
Cool - Ain't nobody bad like me
Sing it, baby
(C-O-O-L) What's that spell?
(C-O-O-L) That spell cool
(Cool) Cool
Sweeter than sex
(Cool) That spell cool
(Cool) Cool
So what U think?
(Cool) Cool
What time is it? Ooh
Listen baby, it takes a lot of lovin' and a little money
2 be a friend of mine
But baby, if U know how 2 shake that thing
I'll try 2 squeeze a little time
Cuz I make love, love every mornin'
2 who's ever by my side
Well, U might say that I'm a nymphomaniac
But it keeps me satisfied
When I look into the mirror
It just tells me something I already know
I'm so cool (Cool)
Cool - Honey, baby can't U see?
Girl, I'm so cool (Cool)
Cool - Ain't nobody bad like me
Sing it
(C-O-O-L) What's that spell?
(C-O-O-L) What time is it?
More (Cool)
I'm so cool (Cool)
Cool (Cool)
And I'm so cool (Cool)
Band
(C-O-O-L) {x2}
Cool, that's right
I'm cooler than Santa Claus, baby
Oh, mm hmm
Ain't nobody bad like me
Somebody pinch me
I must be dreamin'
I know that's right, honey
Cuz there ain't nobody bad like me
What time is it?
Is it time 2 get my hair done yet?
I said, "What time is it?"
Time 2 just walk and shake my head
I'm cool 'til I'm dead
Enough has been said
Come on, baby, let's go 2 bed
Everybody
Walk, shake my head
Cool 'til I'm dead
Enough has been said
Let's go 2 bed
When I look into the mirror
It just tells me something I already know
I'm so cool (Cool)
Ain't nobody bad like me
Oh, I'm so cool (Cool)
I said ain't nobody bad like me
All 2gether now
(C-O-O-L) What's that spell?
(C-O-O-L)
{repeat chant 10 times}
Band? (Yes!)
Is anybody hot? (No!)
U know why? (Why?)
Cuz we're cool (Cool!)
(Yes! No! Why? Cool!) {x3}
Oh, I'm so cool

Rome Unvisited

I.
THE corn has turned from grey to red,
Since first my spirit wandered forth
From the drear cities of the north,
And to Italia's mountains fled.

And here I set my face towards home,
For all my pilgrimage is done,
Although, methinks, yon blood-red sun
Marshals the way to Holy Rome.

O Blessed Lady, who dost hold
Upon the seven hills thy reign!
O Mother without blot or stain,
Crowned with bright crowns of triple gold!

O Roma, Roma, at thy feet
I lay this barren gift of song!
For, ah! the way is steep and long
That leads unto thy sacred street.

II.

And yet what joy it were for me
To turn my feet unto the south,
And journeying towards the Tiber mouth
To kneel again at Fiesole!

And wandering through the tangled pines
That break the gold of Arno's stream,
To see the purple mist and gleam
Of morning on the Apennines.

By many a vineyard-hidden home,
Orchard, and olive-garden grey,
Till from the drear Campagna's way
The seven hills bear up the dome!

III.

A pilgrim from the northern seas--
What joy for me to seek alone
The wondrous Temple, and the throne
Of Him who holds the awful keys!

When, bright with purple and with gold,
Come priest and holy Cardinal,
And borne above the heads of all
The gentle Shepherd of the Fold.

O joy to see before I die
The only God-anointed King,
And hear the silver trumpets ring
A triumph as He passes by!

Or at the altar of the shrine
Holds high the mystic sacrifice,
And shows a God to human eyes
Beneath the veil of bread and wine.

IV.

For lo, what changes time can bring!
The cycles of revolving years
May free my heart from all its fears,--
And teach my lips a song to sing.

Before yon field of trembling gold
Is garnered into dusty sheaves,
Or ere the autumn's scarlet leaves
Flutter as birds adown the wold,

I may have run the glorious race,
And caught the torch while yet aflame,
And called upon the holy name
Of Him who now doth hide His face.

The Cool Cat

The cool cat,
is just standing there.
The cool cat,
doesn't even glare.
The cool cat,
thinks he's so hot.
The cool cat,
doesn't give a snot.
The cool cat,
doesn't listen in class.
The cool cat,
thinks his better than the rest.
The cool cat,
really has no friends.
The cool cat,
smokes after school.
The cool cat,
left his family.
The cool cat,
is a player.
The cool cat,
has no prayers.
The cool cat,
has no savers.
The cool cat,
is one tough dude.
But really....
The cool cat,
is one big fool.

At The Ferry

On such a day the shrunken stream
Spends its last water and runs dry;
Clouds like far turrets in a dream
Stand baseless in the burning sky.
On such a day at every rod
The toilers in the hay-field halt,
With dripping brows, and the parched sod
Yields to the crushing foot like salt.

But here a little wind astir,
Seen waterward in jetting lines,
From yonder hillside topped with fir
Comes pungent with the breath of pines;
And here when all the noon hangs still,
White-hot upon the city tiles,
A perfume and a wintry chill
Breathe from the yellow lumber-piles.

And all day long there falls a blur
Of noises upon listless ears,
The rumble of the trams, the stir
Of barges at the clacking piers;
The champ of wheels, the crash of steam,
And ever, without change or stay,
The drone, as through a troubled dream,
Of waters falling far away.

A tug-boat up the farther shore
Half pants, half whistles, in her draught;
The cadence of a creaking oar
Falls drowsily; a corded raft
Creeps slowly in the noonday gleam,
And wheresoe'er a shadow sleeps
The men lie by, or half a-dream,
Stand leaning at the idle sweeps.

And all day long in the quiet bay
The eddying amber depths retard,
And hold, as in a ring, at play,
The heavy saw-logs notched and scarred;
And yonder between cape and shoal,
Where the long currents swing and shift,
An aged punt-man with his pole
Is searching in the parted drift.

At moments from the distant glare
The murmur of a railway steals
Round yonder jutting point the air
Is beaten with the puff of wheels;
And here at hand an open mill,
Strong clamor at perpetual drive,
With changing chant, now hoarse, now shrill,
Keeps dinning like a mighty hive.

A furnace over field and mead,
The rounding noon hangs hard and white;
Into the gathering heats recede
The hollows of the Chelsea height;
But under all to one quiet tune,
A spirit in cool depths withdrawn,
With logs, and dust, and wrack bestrewn,
The stately river journeys on.

I watch the swinging currents go
Far down to where, enclosed and piled,
The logs crowd, and the Gatineau
Comes rushing from the northern wild.
I see the long low point, where close
The shore-lines, and the waters end,
I watch the barges pass in rows
That vanish at the tapering bend.

I see as at the noon's pale core-
A shadow that lifts clear and floats-
The cabin'd village round the shore,
The landing and the fringe of boats;
Faint films of smoke that curl and wreathe,
And upward with the like desire
The vast gray church that seems to breathe
In heaven with its dreaming spire.

And there the last blue boundaries rise,
That guard within their compass furled
This plot of earth: beyond them lies
The mystery of the echoing world;
And still my thought goes on, and yields
New vision and new joy to me,
Far peopled hills, and ancient fields,
And cities by the crested sea.

I see no more the barges pass,
Nor mark the ripple round the pier,
And all the uproar, mass on mass,
Falls dead upon a vacant ear.
Beyond the tumult of the mills,
And all the city's sound and strife,
Beyond the waste, beyond the hills,
I look far out and dream of life.

Rome

O thou newcomer who seek’st Rome in Rome
And find’st in Rome no thing thou canst call Roman;
Arches worn old and palaces made common
Rome’s name alone within these walls keeps home.

Behold how pride and ruin can befall
One who hath set the whole world ’neath her laws,
All-conquering, now conquered, because
She is Time’s prey, and Time conquereth all.

Rome that art Rome’s one sole last monument,
Rome that alone hast conquered Rome the town,
Tiber alone, transient and seaward bent,

Remains of Rome. O world, thou unconstant mime!
That which stands firm in thee Time batters down,
And that which fleeteth doth outrun swift Time.

Sonnets of home

I

I dream of building
a mansion, villa
or big white house
with a lot of space,
or maybe a Tuscan place
or two set on a terrace
on a mountain
with a wonderful view
overlooking the ocean
with a ivory white beach
that runs as far
as the eye can see
and to make it home
just for you and me

II

The birds will be our companions
and whales and dolphins
will pass in the bay
and a garden
as big as a park
will run all the way
down to the sea
and every plant and tree
that you like will be there
and vegetables will grow in patches
against the hill and there will be orchards
with juicy red, yellow and orange fruit
and plantations with big green pines
will cover the rest.

III

The house will be a white pillar
that towers like a castle above it all
and a place where any wary traveller
will be welcome to visit and rest
and there will be steps coming down
to the bay and a lift or two or three
next to an azure lagoon
where a cool river splashes down
in a big pronged waterfall
and we will be able
to lie in the bright sun
and run with the dogs
on the white beach
like children having fun.

IV

l’Envoi

Let others live in big crowded cities
and be packed into matchboxes
reaching up into the sky
and have more neighbours
than they care to know
but you and I
will be able to watch
blue waves twist and break
and hear the melody
of the rushing sea
and your studio and our home
will stretch from the hill
down to the aquamarine ocean
and touch the big sapphire sky.

Cool

It's hard to remember how it felt before
Now I found the love of my life
Passes things, get more comfortable
Everything is going right
And after all the obstacles
It's good to see you now with someone else
And it's such a miracle that you and me are still good friends
After all that we've been through
I know we're cool
I know we're cool
We used to think it was impossible
Now you call me by my new last name
Memories seem like so long ago
Time always kills the pain
Remember Harbor Boulevard
The dreaming days where the mess was made
Look how all the kids have grown, oh
We have changed but we're still the same
After all that we've been through
I know we're cool
I know we're cool
Yeah, I know we're cool
And I'll be happy for you
If you can be happy for me
Circles and triangles
And now we're hanging out with your new girlfriend
So far from where we've been
I know we're cool
I know we're cool
C-cool, I know we're cool
I know we're cool

Real Cool World

So far this love is delightful
The face of seduction was you
But I listened for each and every footstep
In this real cool world
Questioning saintlike and fantastic heroes
Feeling like lost little children in fabled lands
So I listen for each and every friendship
In this real cool world
Now there is you
In my real cool world
Starry-eyed life but somehow believing in nothing
You whisper sweet nothing but reading between your lines
I listen color me doubtful
In this real cool world
Now there is you
In my real cool world
You came from nowhere
You came from nowhere
You held me you shook me
Hey
Its a cool world
Its a cool world
Its a real cool world
Its a real cool world
Its a real cool world
Its a real cool world
Now there is you
In my real cool world
Now there is you

Crazy Cool

(peter lord / v. jeffrey smith / sandra st. victor)
Sitting, chilling, thinking about you babe
Youre like a long, cool glass of lemonade
Bitter, sweet and I want you so bad it hurts
You complete my life
And you quench my thirst, sexy
Sexy feelings just come over me
Playing with my dress like a summer breeze
Gentle as the touch of a falling leaf
You open me up to love
Now I gotta believe, gotta believe
Bridge:
Nothings too good for my baby
Anything you want be free
Its the least that I can do
What youve given me, given me
Chorus:
Cause Im cool, crazy cool
Crazy cool with you
In this groove, crazy groove
Back act a fool
Hey Im cool, crazy cool
Youre crazy cool with me
In this groove, crazy cool
Everything you need, sexy
Laying in the grass
Writing poetry
Looking up at the midnight sun
When youre making love to me
You showed me just how cool
Crazy cool can be
Now I know the meaning of ecstasy, ecstasy

Cool Water

Words and music by bob nolan
Revised lyrics by joni mitchell
All day I face the barren waste
Without a taste of water
Cool water
Old dan and i
Our throats slate dry
Our spirits cry out for water
Cool clear water
Keep on movin dan
Some devils had a plan
Buried poison in the sand
Dont drink it man
Its in the water
Cool clear water
In my mind I see
A big green tree
And a river flowin free
Waitin up ahead
For you and me
Cool clear water
The nights are cool and Im a fool
Each star is a pool of water
Cool water
But come the dawn
We carry on
We wont last long without water
Cool clear water
Keep on movin dan
Were still in no-mans land
Dry bones and sand
People never planned here for water
Cool clear water
In my mind I see
A big green tree
And a river flowin free
Waiting up ahead for you and me
Cool clear water
The shadows sway
They seem to say
Tonight we pray for water
Cool water
And way up there
If you care
Please show us where
Theres good water
Cool clear water

Play me something blue
To go with something cool

Theres an old flame burning in me
Like the sun in a july sky
Seems to me, Im always thirsty

Where memberships a smiling face,
Brush shoulders with the stars.
Where strangers take you by the hand,
And welcome you to wonderland -
From beneath their panamas...
Chorus:
Club tropicana, drinks are free,
Fun and sunshine - theres enough for everyone.
All thats missing is the sea,
But dont worry, you can suntan!
Castaways and lovers meet,
Then kiss in tropicanas heat,
Watch the waves break on the bay.
Soft white sands, a blue lagoon,
Cocktail time, a summers tune,
A whole nights holiday!

Pack your bags,

Everything's Gonna Be Cool This Christmas

Remember last year when you were on your own
You swore the spirit couldn't be found
December rolled around and you were counting on it to roll out
But everything's gonna be cool this christmas
Everything's gonna be cool this christmas
Everything's gonna be cool this christmas
Well everybody's waiting for you down at the house
The tree is looking so inspired
There's a yuletide groove waiting for you to move
Come on and throw another log on the fire
And everything's gonna be cool this christmas
Everything's gonna be cool this christmas
Everything's gonna be cool this christmas
Baby jesus, born to rock
As the days go by, the more that we need friends
And the harder they are to find
If i could have a friend like you in my life
Then i guess i'd be doing just fine
And everything's gonna be cool this christmas
Everything's gonna be cool this christmas
Everything's gonna be cool this christmas

Cool Vibes

Don't want you
To lead me to the dark
Don't need you
To tear my heart apart
Don't do that
Though people say that you're my enemy
I know you can set me free
Don't want you
To come so close to me
Don't need you
To blow my fantasy
But i know
That you are livin' far beyond those lies
I can see the danger rise in your eyes
Cool vibes why don't you kill me?
Cool vibes why don't you turn your eyes away
Can't you see we're free to die
Cool vibes all we can do is fight and pray
Cool vibes why don't you thrill me
Cool vibes why don't you kill me
All that i can see
Are shadows of my destiny
Don't want you
To make me feel afraid
Don't need you
To take away the hate
But i know
that you will break the seal of mystery
Leave it to my fantasy what will be?
Cool vibes why don't you kill me?
Stay close to me
Infinity
Enigma's what we share
But i don't care
You'll be there

Cool Guy

Let the man in the mirror feel peace,
Feel the emotional problems as no other.
He fed on you to cast Himself adrift,
To ruin your Life, I say. To ruin it!
Yet the guys who win are ones cool,
They have won all hope and happiness if cool,
Remain cool, remain cool, remain cool.
It is all that needed in emotional history
As a worn fashion of height and respect and readiness.
Inside the choice of room within Rome,
I express the rules guarding the production of weight
And easier foundation, also clothes.

Enna

City where the hills recede
land at the horizons' end
what saint or poet did you breed
oh Enna.

Lo, the smiling vales descend
from the bird-enamored walls
that band so many graces in
oh Enna.

Fair and faintly green your hills
fall away, behind them rise
others fairer, fainter still
oh Enna.

O'er the chime-enchanted stair
a doughty brace of butterflies
agitates the drowsy air
oh Enna.

On your steepy mountainsides
light her foot and dry her tear
the new Persephone arrives
oh Enna.

And when the golden sun goes down
from hill to vale to hill ring round
the bells that call your faithful home
oh Enna? .

Then the clouds fill up the vales
and cool the throat and moisten well
the sere recesses of the soul
oh Enna.

City where the hills recede
land at the horizons' end
what saint or poet did you breed
oh Enna?

From One Augur to Another

So, Calchas, on the sacred Palatine,
You thought of Mopsus, and o'er wastes of sea
A flower brought your message. I divine
(Through my deep art) the kindly mockery
That played about your lips and in your eyes,
Plucking the frail leaf, while you dreamed of home.
Thanks for the silent greeting! I shall prize,
Beyond June's rose, the scentless flower of Rome.
All the Campagna spreads before my sight,
The mouldering wall, the Caesars' tombs unwreathed,
Rome and the Tiber, and the yellow light,
Wherein the honey-colored blossom breathed.
But most I thank it--egoists that we be!
For proving then and there you thought of me.
