Auntie's Skirts

Whenever Auntie moves around,
Her dresses make a curious sound,
They trail behind her up the floor,
And trundle after through the door.

Your Auntie Grizelda

By diane hilderbrand and jack keller
She knows her mind all right, your auntie grizelda,
She says she knows my kind, she might, maybe so.
Oh, yeah, shes raised you right, your auntie grizelda,
You only know the things she wants you to know.
I know shes having a fit,
She doesnt like me a bit,
No bird of grace ever lit on auntie grizelda.
You cant begrudge her style, your auntie grizelda,
She couldnt budge a smile and do it for free.
So righteous making fudge, your auntie grizelda,
So proper judging others over her tea.
You look just like her you do,
I know by looking at you,
That youve been listening to your auntie grizelda.
[ad lib]
Oh, no, dont look at me like auntie grizelda
It takes much more to be someone of your own.
Youve got to make it free from auntie grizelda
Or just like her youll have to make it alone.
I know shes having a fit,
She doesnt like me a bit,
No bird of grace ever lit on auntie grizelda.
Auntie grizelda, auntie grizelda

The Elevator

1st floor decide what you'll be one day
With a head full of comment and nothing to say
2nd floor mixed up it happens that way
Soon you realize that listening don't pay
3rd floor in limbo, no easy moves
Up or down it's time to choose
(chorus)
The elevators going up
Quick the door's about to shut
Too late we're full just hang around
It won't be long - it won't be long before it's down
4th floor the job hunt and all that you ask
Is an honest day's pay for an honest day's graft
5th floor you may make a little more money
Now it's apparent downstairs ain't so fuuny
6th floor a mortgage, a collar and tie
2 weeks vacation in june or july
(chorus)
The elevators going up
Quick the door's about to shut ....
7th floor expenses and private schools
Pushing a pen you're not turning the tools
8th floor position, respect and acclaim
Move up the 9th for fortune or fame
10th floor for investment and real estate
Recouping the redies before it's tool late
11th floor the penthouse the final cut
With a head full of comment and a mouth that stays shut
(chorus)
The elevators going up
Quick the door's about to shut ....

The Old Trundle-Bed

O the old trundle-bed where I slept when a boy!
What canopied king might not covet the joy?
The glory and peace of that slumber of mine,
Like a long, gracious rest in the bosom divine:
The quaint, homely couch, hidden close from the light,
But daintily drawn from its hiding at night.
O a nest of delight, from the foot to the head,
Was the queer little, clear little, old trundle-bed!

O the old trundle-bed, where I wondering saw
The stars through the window, and listened with awe
To the sigh of the winds as they tremblingly crept
Through the trees where the robin so restlessly slept:
Where I heard the low, murmurous chirp of the wren,
And the katydid listlessly chirrup again,
Till my fancies grew faint and were drowsily led
Through the maze of the dreams of the old trundle bed.

O the old trundle-bed! O the old trundle-bed!
With its plump little pillow, and old-fashioned spread;
Its snowy-white sheets, and the blankets above,
Smoothed down and tucked round with the touches of love;
The voice of my mother to lull me to sleep
With the old fairy-stories my memories keep
Still fresh as the lilies that bloom o'er the head
Once bowed o'er my own in the old trundle-bed.

Spied

How was it for you?
Uncle asked, lying
Slumped across Auntie,
Some small-beached
Whale, his voice escaping
His lungs as would air
From a punctured tyre.

Fine, it was fine, Auntie
Sighed, her soprano
Voice easing beneath
His sweaty soft bulk,
Unaware their young
Niece was standing silent
By the half open door,

Capturing them in the
Semi light, waiting small
And innocent to ask for
Water, dithering, unsure
Whether to ask and stay
Or simply to close the
Door and walk away.

Wolf At The Door

Wake me, shake me from my sleepiness
Wide-eyed, every tale is taller than the one before
Inside out and upside down
Don't make a sound
The wolf's at the door
And all your streetfighting years
Won't help you anymore
Lead me, guide me home old scatterbrain
Blog it, every smile is wider than the one before
Inside out and upside down
Don't make a sound
The wolf's at the door
And all your streetfighting years
Won't help you anymore
Inside out and upside down
And don't make a sound
So I live and feel
Oh no, don't make a sound
The wolf's at the door
And all your streetfighting years
Won't help you anymore

A Little Ghost

The moonlight flutters from the sky
To meet her at the door,
A little ghost, whose steps have passed
Across the creaking floor.

And rustling vines that lightly tap
Against the window-pane,
Throw shadows on the white-washed walls
To blot them out again.

The moonlight leads her as she goes
Across a narrow plain,
By all the old, familiar ways
That know her steps again.

And through the scrub it leads her on
And brings her to the creek,
But by the broken dam she stops
And seems as she would speak.

She moves her lips, but not a sound
Ripples the silent air;
She wrings her little hands, ah, me!
The sadness of despair!

While overhead the black-duck's wing
Cuts like a flash upon
The startled air, that scarcely shrinks
Ere he afar is gone.

And curlews wake, and wailing cry
Cur-lew! cur-lew! cur-lew!
Till all the Bush, with nameless dread
Is pulsing through and through.

The moonlight leads her back again
And leaves her at the door,
A little ghost whose steps have passed
Across the creaking floor.

Girl Next Door

well she fixes up her shirt,
no she wouldnt go for you
and she mixes up her albums
cause she doesnt like that order you do
and she loves a second way,
hey, your first way is permanently through
and shell never want to go to the movie,
the same one that you do
and if this love is superstitious then everything we did is on call
and if this love is gonna make it then maybe i should turn it up
and the girl next door is cryin
i dunno what i want to do
nextdoor shes cryin
let me go, let me go for you
well i watched as she moves from the bedroom to the living room floor
and ill knock on her door and tell her what ive been waiting for
and shell smack me upside the head, its a crazy scene
save your best for your own, thats how i want it to be
and if this love is superstitious then everything we did is on call
and if this love is gonna make it then maybe i should turn it up
well the girl next door is cryin
i dunno what i want to do
next door shes cryin
let me go, let me go for you
i dont want a new love
you, i dont want a new love...

Cant Make A Sound

I have become a silent movie
The hero killed the clown
Cant make a sound
Nobody knows what hes doing
Still hanging around
Cant make a sound
The slow motion moves me
The monologue means nothing to me
Bored in a role, but he cant stop
Standing up to sit back down
And lose the one thing found
Spinning the world like a toy top
Till theres a ghost in every town
Cant make a sound
Eyes locked and shining
Cant you tell me whats happening?
Why should you want any other, when youre a world within a world?

Unnecessary

Unnecessary,
Auntie said,

when you asked
about taking the mutt

for a walk;
he can take himself

for a walk,
in fact,

she continued
straining the cabbage,

the green water
pushing through

the stainless steel colander,
he runs,

he loves to run
all over the fields.

You knew he did,
you used to run with him,

and being that kind of mutt
he’d let you run beside him,

you being a small boy,
you being the one

who shared his bacon rinds,
you the one who filled

his water bowl
when Auntie forgot.

Sit down now,
Auntie said,

dinner is about
to be served,

and I hope
you have washed

your hands,
and she’d dish you

a large serving
of cabbage

with your meal
and she didn’t see

how that was so
unnecessary.

At The High Lodge.

Auntie played the accordion
While others sang Goodnight
Irene in a discordant chorus
And the gas lamps had been lit
And you sat there amidst it all
Remembering the sound of crickets
On the way up to the high lodge
In the evening darkness with only
Uncle’s torch and the glow-worms
To cut through the blanket sky
Of black and London a long way
Off now and the sound of traffic
And bright lights and the smell
Of coal dust and fumes and sitting
There watching Auntie play and sing
And her fingers moving over the
Keyboard and the sense of tiredness
And the countryside smell entering
Into you and dreams of Jolly Rogers
And cowboy shootouts waiting for
You in the upstairs bedroom with its
Garden spiders in corners and darkness
After Uncle’s lamp went out and you
Imaging Mother in some far off train
Station still waving to you and London
Smells and lights hanging there about.

Just Beyond

And Auntie saying Don’t
Go too far so I can’t see you
And off you’d go off down
The iron stairs with the dog
In pursuit and the wind in the
Sails of your coat and the sky
Beckoning above and Auntie’s
Voice trailing away on the wind’s
Wings and you happy as the sun
In the morning sky making your
Feet rush across grass and the dog
Overtaking looking back tongue
Out of the side of its mouth and
You saying Go on you mutt run
Run and your young legs taking
You far from Auntie’s sight and
Yet looking back you know she’ll
Be there hands in the clothes
Wash scrubbing away her elbows
Wet from the plunge and you
Throwing hands to the sky and
Saying Lift me up wind take me
To the great place beyond the clouds
Of white and sky of blue with just
The mutt and five year old you.

Im So Curious

So curious
So curious
Im so curious about our love
I dont understand
Why don;t you take my hand
And tell me you care (u care)
I see all the signs
But if u wanna be mine
Dont leave me up in the air.
Oh baby
U better let your love show
Heres what Im telling you
Let me know
Let me go
Chorus:
Im so curious
Do u love me?
Do u wonder the way I do? (I do)
Im so curious
What do u think of me] (of me)
Boy, am I just a game
Or do u feel the same way as I do?
So curious
So curious
Im so curious about our love
If its make believe
Why dont u set my heart free
And tell me goodbye? (goodbye)
But if its for real
Tell me u feel for me
Way deep down inside
Oh baby
Is it goodbye or hello?
Herez what Im telling you
Let me know
Let me go
(repeat chorus)
So curious
Yea, yea
All day and night I just dream of you (of you)
I think about all the things that we could do
Im dying for and Im feeling for the day
When you could open up and say
You feel the same
You feel like I do (yeah)
(repeat chorus)
(repeat chorus)

This Bouquet

got a garden of songs where i grow all my thoughts
wish i could harvest one or two for some small talk
i'm always starving for words when you're around
nothing on my tongue so much in my ground

half the time i got my gaze trained on your motel door
fourth door from the end
rest of the time my gaze lays like a stain on the carpeted floor
if it weren't for my brain i'd go over and make friends
too bad about my brain 'cause i'd like to make friends.

see the little song bird unable to make a sound
even though she follows her words from town to town
we both have gardens of songs and maybe its okay
that i am speechless because i picked you this bouquet.

Auntie and Hand Washing

You made your way from the john
to the dining table
and Auntie said

have you washed your hands?
yes
you said

are you sure?
Auntie asked
looking at you

with her fixed stare
and the black mutt
under the table

gazed at you too
I washed them this morning
you said

let me see your hands
Auntie said
and so you held out your hands

and she turned them over and up
and held them looking at them
you're meant to wash them

after going to the toilet each time
she said
not just

when you get up
in the morning
she released your hands

and you looked at them
as if they were suddenly there
before you for the first time

so you had best wash them
Auntie said
before I dish up your dinner

and so you went back
to the wash room
and turned on the tap

and taking soap
between your hands
you washed and rinsed

and dried them
on the white towel
on the rail and went back

to the dining room
and showed your aunt
that's better

she said
now go sit down
and wait for your dinner

and the black mutt
put its chin on your lap
waiting in anticipation

for titbits from your plate
and Auntie called out
from the kitchen

remember to say your prayer
before meals
and you said ok

and muttered
thank you for what I'm about to eat
may there be few vegetables

and lots of meat
and the mutt's dribble
wet your thigh

its jaw lingering there
giving you
its dark eyed stare.

It's Time

Here at home
The thoughts racing through my crazy mind
Trying to figure out
If I'm loving you this one more time
And when I got the mail
It made me close the door just right behind
On a trail of clothes
Left lying here
Thrown across the floor now

Maybe it's the way this love
was meant to be
and maybe it's the only way
for you and me...

It's time

Long-Legged Fly

THAT civilisation may not sink,
Its great battle lost,
Quiet the dog, tether the pony
To a distant post;
Our master Caesar is in the tent
Where the maps ate spread,
His eyes fixed upon nothing,
A hand under his head.

Like a long-legged fly upon the stream
His mind moves upon silence.

That the topless towers be burnt
And men recall that face,
Move most gently if move you must
In this lonely place.
She thinks, part woman, three parts a child,
That nobody looks; her feet
Practise a tinker shuffle
Picked up on a street.

Like a long-legged fly upon the stream
Her mind moves upon silence.

That girls at puberty may find
The first Adam in their thought,
Shut the door of the Pope's chapel,
Keep those children out.
There on that scaffolding reclines
Michael Angelo.
With no more sound than the mice make
His hand moves to and fro.
Like a long-leggedfly upon the stream
His mind moves upon silence.

Curious

Straight as a dye
On us we rely
Yet watch how my head is turning
Distracting my eye
Its no reflection on you, yet who would believe me
Troubled by the thought of it, I cant deny
That Im curious, never meant to hurt you
Just curious, I cant deny
That Im curious, never have decieved you
Just curious, I cannot lie
Give me a reason
Ill hide my delight
Shamelessly Ill seize the moment
Just my needs in sight
Its no reflection on you, yet who would believe me
Troubled by the thought of it, I cant deny
That Im curious, never meant to hurt you
Just curious, I cant deny
That Im curious, never have decieved you
Just curious, I cannot lie
Its no reflection on you, yet who would believe me

Nothing To Say.

Auntie took you to the hut
where the wives of the soldiers

met up to chat and drink tea
and eat cakes and you sat in

the chair looking at each of
them in turn wishing time

would go and you could go
back home to your few toys

and play but no Auntie carried
on the talking and the long

conversations were way over
your head and now and then

they’d break into laughter and
some woman’s kid would cry

and she’d say I think she needs
changing and off she’d go wheeling

the pram to another room and
Auntie’d talk to another woman

and you’d lift your eyes ceiling
wards and wonder where Uncle

was fighting and how he would
cope stuck in the hut with women

yakking all the time and one woman
smiled a big goofy smile at you and

offered you a cake and orange juice
but you shook your head and looked

away in silence sulking with no good
thoughts in your mind and nothing to say.
