Vicarious
you're off to Mindoro
on a night flight from Davao
to Manila
i am bound for Manila
on an early morning flight
for a conference
in Faura
we're heading finally to
a new direction in our lives
to start this new year
with a lot of missions
you go for the smile
i will try, but for the meantime i keep
my mouth shut
i like you (i doubt if this is
love, it is just a very sensitive issue)
i may follow you
and pursue you (till the end of my
life, but when? and where?)
the hands of morality grip me by the throat
giving me the signals
that it really means what it says
you know what i mean.
i still have fences to mend.
there will be a nice hello.
hot and sizzling barbecue.
the goodbye will be as cold as
frozen meat
who knows, i will eat it raw.

Manila
the dead are scattered
buried without the rituals
it's a pity, we are crying
about the victims of this calamity
nature claims
what rightfully belongs to its
hands
manila, you are warned
when will you start to mend your ways?
tomorrow will be too late
the trees once sobbed but manila
you never really cared
you dance your nights in sin and plunder
now the victims lay dead
many are homeless and hungry
with nowhere to go
you weep for they are your children
they are your fathers and mothers
your wives and husbands
now, you must hit your breasts
with your fists
now, you must reform your ways.

Poetics 5....
'DEEP IN MY heart
i love you' this is the first song of the morning radio
the patio smells urine
the covering of the chamber pot is left open
the old man saves his urine
for ten days
you imagine nothing
i can see the blank wall again
nothing red like a rose
then you laugh so hard
the glass falls off from the sink
breaks its mouth on the
marble floor
you have a canvass of manila paper
and a black crayon and then
you draw a man with twenty tongues
and a very big mouth like
manila bay
you put their the name of the man
who broke your heart
fifty times
tore your being apart like a broken
hymen of your first love
you must have remembered your first scream
of that pain
and then you finally come to the conclusion
about that regret
not having feasted upon that pain again
that crazy man
he never asked you again for a date in that
fungal hotel
nosy bellboys
broken locks of the door
and greasy floors

IN LOVE WITH WHAT YOU AIN'T...by talile ali
IN LOVE WITH WHAT YOU AIN'T
I MET A GIRL NAMED MANILA
SWEET AS SHE CAN BE
EVERY TIME ID SEE HER
MY HEART WOULD GO CRAZY
WAS SHE SOMETHING SPECIAL
I CAN'T REALLY SAY
NEVER REALLY KNEW HER
IN THAT SPECIAL WAY
LIFES A PAIN AND THAT A FACT
PEOPLE FUELIN BACK TO BACK
I'M IN LOVE WITH WHERE YOUR AT
AS I SEE YOU DOIN IT
NAILIN' BASTARDS
LATE INTO THE NITE
THE WAY YOU BALLIN
JUST AIN'T RIGHT
SAY YOU GOTTA DO IT
TILL YOU GET TIGHT
I GET SO JEALOUS
I WANK OFF EACH NIGHT
I CAN'T HELP WONDERIN
WHY WE NEVER BALLED
WE BOTH HAVE HUNGERS
WHICH WE NEED RESOLVED
SHE RANTS ON ABOUT HOW SHE'S LOVIN THE SEX
I CAN'T HELP BUT FEELIN' A LITTLE BIT VEXED
SHE'S NAILIN ALL THESE SUCKERS, THATS RIGHT
WHO TREAT HER LIKE WORN OUT SQUAT EVERY NIGHT
THE SNOW'S BEHIND ME
MY BAGS ARE ALL PACKED
I'M OFF, MANILA
AND I WON'T BE BACK
SHE IS THE REAL DEALER
REAL THRILLA KILLA
LOOKING FOR A COUPLA
TWENTIES TO FILL'ER

Early Morning Cold Taxi
3:36, its cold, I know Im growing old,
With lifes best side on the downward slope,
Its in my own hands, I know Ill cope,
My girls with me and all my friends can see.
Here I am again,
Early morning cold taxi.
Early morning cold taxi.
Done it before, do it again,
Know from experience its not in vain,
Shes the best Ive had, I cannot see, what someone else can do to me.
Its a long way home but loves so warm, youll see.
Here I am again,
Early morning cold taxi.
Early morning cold taxi.
Early morning cold taxi,
Each time I do it, I feel so down and out,
Early morning cold taxi,
though my mind thinks strange Ill keep on, no doubt.
3:36, its cold, I know Im growing old,
One day well be wed,
This I know for its what she said,
Then no more will my mind be uneasy.
Here I am again,
Early morning cold taxi.

ACT: Goodbye
Girl: Goodbye
I always want to say it in front of you
Goodbye
And there would be no more “I love you”
Goodbye
But why though I really meant to
The pain is still haunting my soul
Guy: Goodbye
You don’t know there’s a mystery inside
Goodbye
You are a fool to quickly decide
Goodbye
When you say something you don’t want to
It will affect you most with regret
Girl: Goodbye means leaving
Guy: Goodbye means nothing
Girl: Goodbye means releasing
Guy: Goodbye means waiting
Girl: And will you forget me after
Guy: Or will I love you forever
Girl: And how if I miss you in the lonely night
Guy: I will torture you to see my face
Girl: It’s over!
Guy: Not yet
Girl: Why are you so stubborn?
Guy: Because you make it complicated
Girl: But there’s no future for us
Guy: There’s always a hope
Girl: Goodbye
I will definitely cry
Goodbye
But the tears are not going to show
Goodbye
I don’t ask to be forgiven
Because I’m the one who put this misery
Guy: Goodbye
You can’t beat me with just that
Goodbye
Don’t judge me because I have the power of
Goodbye
Though I let my beloved go
Someday I’ll bring you to my arm again
Girl: Goodbye means separate
Guy: Goodbye means “I’ll be back”
Girl: Goodbye means finishing
Guy: Goodbye means praying
Girl: And will it make you think
Guy: That you are my precious one
Girl: And when I finally disappear
Guy: That’s the time I realize I’m lost
Girl: Just be a good boy!
Guy: Why should I?
Girl: So I can say farewell
Guy: I won’t let it
Girl: You will be hurt by me
Guy: I’ll hurt more if you leave me
Girl: Goodbye
I will act so rude and cold
Goodbye
You deserved so much better
Goodbye
It’s the easier way to be apart from you
Even it’s full of lie, of lie
Guy: Goodbye
How can I live without you?
Goodbye
I don’t care what other’s said
Goodbye
But you are running away from me
Denying your true feeling
Girl: Goodbye means not anymore
Guy: Goodbye means see you later
Girl: Goodbye means sad ending
Guy: Goodbye means new beginning
Girl: And did I say to you to move on?
Guy: Only you I couldn’t go on
Girl: And someway we have another chance
Guy: I promise that you won’t slip from my fingers

Never Can Say Goodbye
I never can say goodbye
No, no, no i, I never can say goodbye
Every time I think Ive had enough
And start heading for the door
Theres a very strange vibration
Kissing me right to the core or pericing me right to the core
It says turn around you fool,
You know you love him more
And more
Tell me why is it so?
Dont wanna let you go
I never can say goodbye boy
Ooh ooh baby I never can say goodbye
No no no no no no
Ooh hey I never can say goodbye, boy
Ooh ooh baby
I never can say goodbye
[no no no no no no] hey
I never can say goodbye [never say goodbye, boy]
Oh no, no, no i, I never can say goodbye
[never say goodbye, boy]
I keep thinking that our problems soon are all gonna work
Out
But theres that same unhappy feeling,
Theres that anguish, theres that doubt
Its that same old dizzy hangup
I cant do with you or without or youve had with you all your life
Tell me why is it so? I dont wanna let you go
I never can say goodbye boy, ooh baby
I never can say goodbye, no no no no no no
Hey I never can say goodbye boy,ooh baby
I never can say goodbye, no no no no no no
I never can say goodbye, boy,
I never can say goodbye, no no no no no no
I never can say goodbye, boy
I never can say goodbye, no no no no no no
[never can say goodbye, boy]
[never can say goodbye, boy]
I never can say goodbye, boy
I never can say goodbye, no no no no no no
I never can say goodbye, boy
I never can say goodbye, no no no no no no
Ooh ooh ooh hey I never can say goodbye, boy
No no no baby hey never can say goodbye
No no no no please, dont make me say goodbye
Hey I will never say goodbye, no baby
Oh please dont leave me, no no no no
Hey oh I cant say goodbye, boy
No no no baby
Oh please dont oooh, baby

Upon Visiting A Dying Woman In The Hospital At Room 108
actually the barbecue
is more than what it appears to be
its scent of meat
and the hotness of the spice
and delicacy of
the sauce
it is the front of something
that is hidden
there is something behind its shape
and odor
i cannot speak to you about it
so i offer you that
pork barbecue
i know that hunger that
does not want to be fed
time fills that
grief
that cannot be appeased
the barbecue is cold
set aside in one of the corners
of the table
grease is solidified
no one
not one from those who see
the emaciated body
of the dying woman
wants to take
the bite
someone does
but eventually there is that
obstruction in the
throat
and so the tongue
expels that piece
of pork barbecue
again
what a waste!
yet we can never voice
this matter out
the eyes speak a lot
but you know then
they have no voices

Twenty Flight Rock
Well I got a girl with a record machine,
When it comes to rocking shes a queen.
I took her to a dance on a saturday night,
All alone where I can hold her tight.
She lives on the twentieth floor uptown.
The elevators broken down.
And I walk one, two flight, three flight four,
Five six seven flight, eight flight more.
Up on the twelfth Im starting to sag,
Fifteenth floor Im ready to drag.
I get to the top and Im too tired to rock.
You know she called me up on the telephone,
Said come on ever baby cause Im all alone.
I said baby youre mighty sweet,
But Im in bed with aching feet.
This went on for a couple of days,
But I couldnt stay away.
And I walk one, two flight, three flight four,
Five six seven flight, eight flight more.
Up on the twelfth Im starting to sag,
Fifteenth floor Im ready to drag.
I get to the top and Im too tired to rock.
Well I sent to chicago for repairs,
Till its fixed Im using the stairs.
I hope they hurry, before its too late,
I want my baby too much to wait.
All this climbing is getting me down,
Theyll find me hanging over the rail.
And I walk one, two flight, three flight four,
Five six seven flight, eight flight more.
Up on the twelfth Im starting to sag,
Fifteenth floor Im ready to drag.
I get to the top and Im too tired to rock.
And I walk one, two flight, three flight four,
Five six seven flight, eight flight more.
Up on the twelfth Im starting to sag,
Fifteenth floor Im ready to drag,
I get to the top and Im too tired to rock.

In The Morning
Hey baby what you doing?
Your flight left yet?
Pshh, Im half way there
I cant wait to see you
So tell me have you left yet, damn
Im running late to the airport
Every time we do this
In my mind saying should I go through with this?
All I see is you kissing me
Last time shut my eyes
Plane goes higher, higher
Hotels booked all I have to do is get my key
I cant wait to have you walk up and hold on me, yeah
Ive never felt this way before
But in the morning
When youre gone
I must wait and be strong
And have faith
Youll return
In my arms
Hope you miss your flight
Hope you miss your flight
Casablanca has always been my dream
I heard that its absolutely radiant in spring
In the garden drinking shots of hennesy
Calm my nerves, its been way too long for me
Finally were driving in a far out dream
Nothing seems even real or close for me
Afternoon sun showers change the way I see
Ive never felt this way before
But in the morning
When youre gone
I must wait and be strong
And have faith
Youll return
In my arms
Hope you miss your flight
Hope you miss your flight
But in the morning
When youre gone
I must wait and be strong
And have faith
Youll return
In my arms
Hope you miss your flight
Hope you miss your flight
Its okay, its okay
(its okay)
Its okay, its okay
But in the morning
When youre gone
I must wait and be strong
And have faith
Youll return
In my arms
Hope you miss your flight
Hope you miss your flight

Homebound
before he left the U.S.
HE took pictures of himself sleeping
no one believes that it was him who took that picture
someone theorizes
someone was beside him
another lonely body to another lonely body on that winter time
but it is really true
he will always be alone
and will always be alone
he repeats it so many times that it has become the sound of the
monotonous loneliness that he is finally leaving
he took the pictures of his breakfast
some greens
his lunch something oily
and his supper
something like cheesy pasta
he took every detail of that lonely room
then he viewed them again
when he was on that 17-hour flight back home
before the plane landed in Manila
he deleted everything

The Car Didn’t Like It (Fun Poem 50)
I went to a party
just the other night.
The meal was atrocious
and a bad time was had.
Just to add insult to injury,
the car didn’t like it neither
being left alone out in the cold.
Therefore, when I went to start it,
it didn’t want to go.
The protest was duly noted
and a jump-start was given.
Finally, we got home
cold, tired and weak.
Went straight to bed
and could have slept for a week.
Unfortunately, I had
to get up early the next morning
for work I had to go.
I think I’ll treat the car
to a new battery this year,
so it will start first time
if the weather gets severe.

Mercy
(Kurt Stevenson, Patrick Winningham, & Chris Boesel)
Originally recorded for the Georgia soundtrack
I got a feeling
of unrighteousness
bitter cold
hollow bitterness
down the road
I walk with loneliness
mercy will follow me I'm told
Beneath this skin
there lies a heart of stone
It's growing old
so very far, from home
but a heart of gold
I may someday own?
and mercy will follow me, I'm told
mercy will you follow me
mercy will you follow me
to the final breath at last I take
mercy will you follow me
mercy will you follow me
Till the chain of this old world I finally break.
My sister sang
songs so sweet and sad
bout a man
whos love I never had
there's a train
bound for gillian?
mercy will follow me I'm told
mercy will you follow me
mercy will you follow me
till my final breath at last I take
mercy will you follow me
mercy will you follow me
Till the chains of this old world I finally break
Till the chains of this old world I finally break
Till the chains of this old world I finally break

Thank You For Loving Me
honey thank you for loving me
you love me for what i am
look at my hands, i am bound
look at my feet, they are bound too
look at my body, bound to the strongest pillar
that mankind has built for all its men
look at my tongue, itis hidden
my mouth, i am shut
you come closer to me and touch me
you give me water you give me bread
you give me hope and will not own me
you kiss me and you do not say goodbye
i am bound, i am not free, and yet you still love me.
thank you my dear for kissing me in my prison cell.

Where you go
When we finally part ways
I like to see where you escape
From the clutches of my hands
I will follow you
As you go to green, cooler fields
Or to the white cheerful foams of the sea
I shall know
To always follow you
In bliss
If you escape however
And take flight towards the recesses of your heart
And the secret paths of your veins
I will not follow you
Your body now has walls
Impenetrable
I shall be blocked
By the coldness of your heart
There are no doors
Or windows where I can possibly enter
You have shut yourself
With all your skins
Where no white bones can ever be seen

Fly
Set yourself on a movie screen
play any part or be anything
know what i mean
its all about right its all
its all about wrong
about you and me and how to get along
ya gotta wake up
work hard and take a deep breath
open your heart and never forget
ya gotta fly
break the chains that bind you to the ground and try
to let it go be happy with what you found
fly mend your broken wing so you can take flight
and if you wanna go I'll go there with ya tonight
ya gotta fly
break the chains that bind you to the ground and try
to let it go be happy with what you found
fly mend your broken wing so you can take flight
and if you wanna go I'll go there with ya tonight
ya gotta fly yah just FLY!
i remember walkin down rodeo drive
when i was younger
i used to push the limits of life
but when i grew somthing changed inside
i saw the color of money take over so many lives
i know alot of us would like to believe
but theres too many of us thats parted by prejudice
when you look in the mirror who do you see
is it somebody else
or who you really wanna be
ya gotta fly
break the chains that bind you to the ground and try
to let it go be happy with what you found
fly mend your broken wing so you can take flight
and if you wanna go I'll go there with ya tonight
ya gotta fly
break the chains that bind you to the ground and try
to let it go be happy with what you found
fly mend your broken wing so you can take flight
and if you wanna go I'll go there with ya tonight
ya gotta fly yah just FLY!
not always easy livin in a world of pain
got me running into brickwalls again and again
ya say you need a break and a change from this life
ya gotta fly
break the chains that bind you to the ground and try
to let it go be happy with what you found
fly mend your broken wing so you can take flight
and if you wanna go I'll go there with ya tonight
ya gotta fly yah just FLY!

The Rainy Days Inside My Mind
it is a summer day
but the rainy days still exist inside my mind
it was a Sunday
when the rain was falling softy at the pier
the M/V Alfredo was about to leave
bound for Manila
and there was you
my love
waving your hands
for till then
we never saw each other again
this afternoon i am standing on
a pavement on the same pier
the M/V Alfredo had long
sunk
and i do not know anymore where
you destiny placed you
i am hiding my eyes inside this thick
sunglasses
no one knows how i feel
for outside
i am still smiling and then another boat
sounds its call
i guess, i have to leave them all.

The Frozen Man
Last thing I remember is the freezing cold
Water reaching up just to swallow me whole
Ice in the rigging and howling wind
Shock to my body as we tumbled in
Then my brothers and the others are lost at sea
I alone am returned to tell thee
Hidden in ice for a century
To walk the world again
Lord have mercy on the frozen man
Next words that were spoken to me
Nurse asked me what my name might be
She was all in white at the foot of my bed
I said angel of mercy Im alive or am I dead
My name is william james mcphee
I was born in 1843
Raised in liverpool by the sea
But that aint who I am
Lord have mercy on the frozen man
It took a lot of money to start my heart
To peg my leg and to buy my eye
The newspapers call me the state of the art
And the children, when they see me, cry
I thought it would be nice just to visit my grave
See what kind of tombstone I might have
I saw my wife and my daughter and it seemed so strange
Both of them dead and gone from extreme old age
See here, when I die make sure Im gone
Dont leave em nothing to work on
You can raise your arm, you can wiggle your hand
And you can wave goodbye to the frozen man
I know what it means to freeze to death
To lose a little life with every breath
To say goodbye to life on earth
To come around again
Lord have mercy on the frozen man
Lord have mercy on the frozen man

There Goes My Baby
(written by annie roboff and arnie roman)
He was the kind of guy who loved so unselfishly
And everyone could see what a prize he was
Everyone but me
I must be blind
I must be the kind who dont know what they have
Till theyre all alone and sad
There goes my baby
Like the sun fallin out of the clear blue sky
There goes my baby
And its gonna be a cold, hard night
Now that I finally see
How I need him to be
Right here by my side
There goes my baby
Bye bye, baby, goodbye
How could I have a love so fine
And not know what its worth
Maybe this empty heart he left behind
Is all that I deserve
What kind of fool
Finds a perfect jewel and cant see how it shines
Till shes all alone and cryin
There goes my baby
Like the sun fallin out of the clear blue sky
There goes my baby
And its gonna be a cold, hard night
Now that I finally see
How I need him to be
Right here by my side
There goes my baby
Bye bye, baby, goodbye
How I wish I could hold him in my arms and say
This time Im gonna treat him right
But its too late
There goes my baby
Like the sun fallin out of the clear blue sky
There goes my baby
And its gonna be a cold, hard night
Now that I finally see
How I need him to be
Right here by my side
There goes my baby
Bye bye, baby, goodbye

Bye bye, baby, goodbye

La Naval De Manila, My Mother
'Sa Iyong kandungan aking natikman ang unang pagmamahal. Kahit musmos pa, kapiling ka aking ina.'
Happiness, gladness, as I remember those old days.
We can surely say that we are lucky, but how?
The only thing in my life that I have is my mom.
My mom, my mom.
October 2,2008 was the enthonement of La Naval de Manila.
I was there at exactly 4: 30 pm.
The throne was empty.
Then at 5: 10 pm the lady went out of her royal room.
She was wearing her regalia, and a short procession was done.
I was seated at the left panel of the altar (I was lucky) . As she proceeded to her throne, I was crying.
Why? I remember my mom, La Naval's image is too motherly.
An affection of a mother and a son.
Tears fell. I did not able to touch her because of a certain shock.
My Queen, My Mother.
October 12,2008, I attended the annual the annual procession of The La Gran Señora de Filipinas La Naval De Manila.
Like what I have stated, I am a great devotee of the La Naval De Manila. I was there at around 9am, I wasvery happy to see the Lady standing in her Baldachino.
At around five in the afternoon, the procession went out,
as the mcee shoutedher name,
La Naval de Manila,
I hurriedly went to see her,
again the Lady was smiling in her carozza.
I said 'Kayo na po ang bahala sa amin.' That is the power of La Naval, powerful, motherly and majestic.
La Naval de Manila is like my mom.
My mom had battles, sufferings, and sorrows.
But my mom is a great warrior, like what the Lady did in the battle.
My mom continued the battle despite my father died.
What is the similarity of La Naval and my mom, both of them are brave. When Mary saw her dying son Jesus, she cried silently.
When my mom saw her two boys suferring she cried silently.
When Mary saw her son going to heaven, she was happy.
When my mom saw me going up on stage to receive my diploma, she cried, tears of joy fell.
Now that is what we call Women's power. Battles?
Yes, I believe that my mom is still having her battles.
Next year, October 2009, once again the La Naval will be placed in her royal baldachino,
she will hear songs again in her honor,
she will have a procession once again.
The Faith that my mom and I have will always continue,
it will always be there.
Without La Naval, the battles that we had will never be surpassed. Thank you, Our Lady of La Naval.
Thank you.

The tony encounter at myrna’s coffee shop
I really admire him giving me his time
For a good coffee at nine
Matched with choco-raisin cake
Bespectacled tony
Jesuit priest
White barong
Still slim
And walks
With counted
Composure
He looks at me
With a eye
For a mistake
Keen eyes
Frisking my soul
“You’re flourishing” he said.
I am fat
Tall and pumpkin cheeks
I can say
I have a basketball
Inside my
Pink polo shirt
As gift from an
OFW
I sip my coffee
Sliced my choco cake
With a fork
And take a
Big bite
I am flabby
After I left
The seminary
Where we were buddies
”you’re strong” I thought.
I could not be stopped
Asking him:
how did you manage to stay as Jesuit?
Did you have a lot of struggles?
You like the solitude, do you?
Do you have a strict routinary prayer?
How is you religious life?
How’s your sex life?
“It is a grace, a gift”, he blurted.
“We live in poverty
All our salaries go to the Jesuit society”.
He gave me the sad news
About sonny leaving the novitiate
Years ago
About Roy leaving the priesthood
A few months ago,
And Fr. Mac pulled out
From Arvisu and now
Chaplain of the PGH,
A sore.
“What could be the possible explanation
Why priests are leaving? ”
“Has the Jesuit society studied the trend
And found the explanations? ” I asked him.
“We are a few now”
“We will have a new campaign
For vocations” he answers.
“I will be leaving for a consultors’ meeting
Tomorrow for an early flight to manila
Then I will be in Davao for another
Important meeting.
Just his afternoon
I met with a benefactor who will give
65 dollars a month for our scholars”
still tony talking.
What I cannot forget, as he cancelled my
Room reservation at the Jesuit house
As I decided to stay in the hotel instead,
“You saw the light, and we are still blind”,
he said with a rush.
It was ironic, I know, and I will be thinking
About his answer, for nights and years.
