Twin Mountains In Marawi

the twin mountains in Marawi
from a distance as you sit calmly
in the sala of your house
your window overlooking
the misty morning
you shall see how perfect
are the breasts of the
virginal native brown
mountain woman

two close Filipino friends

two of them in a tow
on top of a rock
a mountain
somewhere in the hidden forest of Mexico
behind them are the shadows of
tall unexplored mountains
misty, around them is the coldness
of this tapestry
of boulders, and fog and smoke of the
breath of the earth
fronting them are the mountains again
behind and on the sides of their
twin existence
being, uncertain, true, insisting,
growing, mysterious
after this short rest, they move again
to complete their journey to the other side
edgeless.

Misty Water Woman

I was driving round, as the sun went down
When I came upon a lake, the sign said misty water
And standing there, with wet and tangled hair was a girl
She said her name was bo, she was a farmers daughter
I said get in, Ill take you home, you must be cold
Misty water woman
You never get to her
Misty water woman
You never get to touch her
And feel her near
It began to storm, and our talk grew warm
Till I stopped the car outside a cold and lonely place
I said were here
But she had disappeared
And on the seat was a pool of tears
And a handkerchief of lace
I did not see her leave
I was amazed
Misty water woman
You never get to her
Misty water woman
You never get to touch her
And feel her warm
I sped into the house,
It took her father and her mother to straighten me out
What was it all about
Please let me know
She looked sad, and he looked mad
And he said, yes youre right, once we had a daughter
Her name was bo, but that was long ago
Years have gone since she drowned at misty water
And the way he took it, took me by surprise
Misty water woman
You never get to her
Misty apparition
You never get to touch her
And feel her near

Soldier's Song

Smoke was slowly rising as the night began to fade,
There were fires on the sky line from some distant born array,
I was riding out at 17 to join my first brigade,
Many years ago.
And I chanced upon a farm house where the woman took me in,
She gave me food and wine, she gave me shelter from the wind,
She delayed me from my regiment, and service of my King,
Many years ago.
She said "Soldier, before I lose you to the fight,
Oh my soldier, I'll make a man of you tonight"
She took me over, in the fading fire glow,
On that wild and misty night she was my woman.
When I rose next morning I was gone before she stirred,
Tore myself away from there and left without a word,
Sound of distant infantry was the only thing I heard,
On that morning.
And in that day I aged 10 years and died a thousand deaths,
I learned the feel of frozen steal and fear within my breast,
But the lesson I remember 'til they laided me to my rest,
Keeps returning.
She said "Soldier, before I lose you to the fight,
Oh my soldier, I'll make a man of you tonight"
She took me over, in the fading fire glow,
On that wild and misty night she was my woman.
And when the dice of war was thrown, and victory was won,
My drunken young compatriots went out to have their fun,
And there was no single house they did not burn or over run,
On that evening.
And I rode out to that place again as hard as I could ride,
but I found her by the trail on the lonely mountain side,
In the hands of those brave friends of mine she suffered and she died,
Many years ago.
"Soldier, before I lose you to the fight,
Oh my soldier, I'll make a man of you tonight"
She took me over, in the fading fire glow,
On that wild and misty night she was my woman.

A Morning Chat With You

a morning chat with you
sweet nothings
words of concern
like the simplest hello
and little talks about
anything
something that has nothing
to do with burdens
something so light
like a trivial
nonsense, a casual
conversation beside my
cup of coffee
at the veranda
on a window overlooking
the sea
with outlines of the mountains
stretching a line
on a horizon of blue and
gray

like sunshine on my shoulder
and then i dress myself
and face my own wars
out there

The growth of mounts

Twin mounts grew to hills,
Thanks to lover’s hand.
Twin hills turned mountains,
Thanks to child’s mouth.
Woman is best as mother.

Romancing The Poverty Of Other People

you look at the poverty of other people
romancing it like a metaphor in your poetry
the color of a man's unwashed shirt with mud
and blood, dried sweat,
the sound of a hungry baby like the sound
of thunder coming from the breasts of mountains
the ignorant woman like a beautiful native naked
and bathing in the river and rising like a famous nude painting
their poverty to the rhythm of some blues
the colors in brown, and black and violet and scarlet
the trembling hands and biting lips and blank stares
the blackest background ever
to a future as bleak as ember
to a poverty hopeless as ever.

In Femagas

This is the simplest place
I'd been
Througout my life

The roads pure clay
The mountains pure trees
Nothing bald
No patch of brown

The flowers here bloom
All year round
And fogs hang on
Mountain sides like
Guavas

The children knows nothing
But the laughter of the rivers
The playfulness of worms and birds
The freedom of the monkeys

The staple food is brown rice
The best viand is City Sardine
The one with the Boat trademark
The best desert is a chunk
Of brown sugar

When one gets sick here
There is no doctor
They just consult all their gods
In their sacred caves

And when they die
No one mourns
The other side of the River
Where the boatman takes them
Is their perfect resting place
The Silence golden
The Quiet diamond-like

So Perfect & So Secluded

밖에는 눈, 눈이 와라
Ah, the snow, it's snowing outside!

고요히 창 아래로는 달빛이 들어라
Quietly the moon beams enter through the window

으스름 타고 오신 그 여자는
the woman who arrives on a misty darkness

내 꿈의 품 속으로 들어와 안겨라
comes into my arms, in my dreams

나의 베개 눈물로 함빡이 젖었어
Ah, my pillow is all wet now

그만 그 여자는 가고 말았느냐
The woman's already gone now, isn't she?

다만 고요한 새벽, 별 그림자 하나가
Only a shadow of a star at this quiet dawn hour
창틈을 엿보아라
peeks through the window

Lakewood, In August

i see fog
jewel

upon a green
neckline

of twin mountains
mirror

upon a lake
silver

one morning
i see

mist creeping
upon the mirror

a fish jumps
and creates the ripples

i feel cold air
coming inside

my window
that does not blink

on tranquil
infinity.

My Evil Twin

My evil twin, bad weather friend
He always wants to start when I want to begin*
It scares me so, like I scare myself
With that book of nostradamus up upon my shelf
Playing hangman til the morning light
Doing donuts on the neighbors lawn
Then sleep all through the day, get up and start again
I can hear some sirens somewhere but I dont know why
My evil twin runs home again
Search lights look for an alibi, but Ill be home by then
Here he comes again, my evil twin
My friends have seen him hiding underneath my skin
Who cut the arm off the voodoo doll
That resembles a republican president from long ago
Id hate to see you leave
cause I have grown so grateful for the
Blame you save me from
My twin
My twin
My twin
(my twin) I know he looks like me
(my twin) hates work like me and walks like me
(my twin) hes even got a twin like me
My evil twin, bad weather friend
I know some day Ill meet him
But I dont know where or when

Deciding On A Disposition For The Day...

early this morning
before my walk
i go up the house and
stay for a while at the veranda
overlooking a garden
of anthuriums and
mahogany trees
i take some long breaths
feeling my lungs with
fresh air

i stretch my arms and legs
and breathe some more

i put some numbers of this
inhale and exhale
cycles

and then
last night's storm inside my head
is fully
overtaken

i tell myself
i'll make this day
perfect.

Then There Are The Mountains

On a mountain's peak is there peace?
Mountains that overlook the quiet prairie.
Mountains that borders life in rural counties.
Mountains chiseled by years of wind and rain.
Mountain winds creep keeping all secrets.
Mountains a kin to the lower hills of death.
Mountains at the height of glamour baked in sunshine.
Mountains that reach for more majestic planes.
Mountains giving to the ridges, valleys and cliffs.
Mountains in spring the fulfillment of adventure and dream.
Mountains which can shelter one from storm.
Mountains an enduring symbol in poetry.
Mountains which inhabit the calls of the wild.
Mountains of spectacle, below the bending roads between.
Mountains embracing, magnifying the sounds of river.
Mountains the stellar monuments of time.

The Country

i let you drive
as i sit calmly on the rear side of the car,
i do not wish to speak to you
as i watch the countryside
on a very hot summer

rice fields newly harvested
cracking chunks of soil, brown grass, stacks of hay,
trees with yellow leaves, smoke from the house chimneys,
patches of fog hanging on mountains

behind us on this road towards home
dusts, dusts, dusts.....

Misty River

This morning
Me in this Misty River
All the happiness
I am feeling inside myself
Misty River
The mist is coming
From this Misty River
There are clouds
In the sky
And the mist
Is caused by the condensation
Of the heat mixed in the cold water
Misty River
I am in a fishing boat
That boat is moving slowly in this
Misty river
It is early in the morning
I am eating my breakfast in the fishing boat in the middle of this
Misty River
I hear the birds singing early in the morning
In this Misty River
There must be trees because the sound of the birds is coming from the Branches
Misty River
So peaceful
It looks so different with the mist
No one is around but me
With my fishing boat
And the beautiful sound of the birds
It is so nice
To have a place to come to
Where I can
Hear the sound of the birds
And be left alone
With no one disturbing me
Misty River
This is my special place
And by afternoon
No clouds I will see
The birds are beautiful
Their song is just beautiful like mother nature intended it to be
If nobody else appreciates this Misty River
I do
Misty River
I will die for you
Misty River
I will shed my tears for you
I have been coming here for so long now
Misty River

The wife of our Chinese neighbor

She is strange tonight walking outside their house alone
Towards the dark plaza wearing a face that cannot be drawn

From my window I look at her edging her way slowly straight
To the other end of this concrete road along a line of trees

What is it that the china man this time did to her native sensitivities?
She was taken from the mountains away from her humble beginnings

Only to find herself in this red big house; bearing him children
Giving him the citizenship and when everything is taken from her

The china man now hits him with a hard slap that she is nothing
But a used rag, a dirty doormat that all must stamp upon, including her

very own children. She cannot believe it.

a woman is unhappy and she is always
closing and opening
that window and people keep on looking
figuring out why that window
is unhappy
and they are all happy about the

not this woman not this window
not my woman not my window
always looking out somewhere
except this writer

The Problems of Green

The problems of green have their own colors:
But they all together only cost five dollars: like the stripes
On the Mexican flag:
And Alma making up her own excuses for whatever she does or
Doesn’t do:
And the roads to and away from her are being used,
But her children are doing good:
And I am in my own house in my own graveyard inebriate and
Scarred:
And maybe she will read this, and maybe she will go down
River and find more beautiful boys and read them,
Her brown skin getting goose bumped over her brown and
Perfect skin;
She is the only female I ever think about or try to smell:
And I come to her in the fruit market and then drive away, as my
Life recesses, grows frantic from its lacking amusements,
Or doesn’t exist at all:
And the green planes frolic in the green clouds;
And the hungry green foxes leap for the out of reach grapes,
Vermillion in their over abundance and in their virginal aptitudes,
Or they don’t even try at all.

Mountain Woman

They lived together in a dirty old shack
At the edge of the black rocky mountain
And they drank mountain dew and they lived on the food
That they grew at the side of the mountain
Shes a mountain woman, hes her mountain man
They [? ] down the valley
Shes a mountain woman, hes her mountain man
Uneducated but theyre happy
Mountain woman couldnt read nor write
But she knew good from evil, she know wrong from right
When the government tried to buy her water rights
Her intuition was her only guide
Shes a mountain woman, hes her mountain man
They [? ] by the valley
Shes a mountain woman, hes her mountain man
Uneducated but theyre happy
Spend my life with my mountain woman
Were uneducated by were happy
The civil servant used compulsory purchase
To acquire the [? ] for the nation
Theyll dig up the land, theyre gonna make a dam
And build a hydroelectric power station
And now she lives on the 33rd floor
Of a man-made concrete mountain
She got an elevator and refrigerator
And an automobile to run around in
Fast talkin lawyers from the government
Went and beat proud mountain woman down
Hey mountain woman, take your mountain man
They took your land and flood your valley
Spend my life with my mountain woman
Theyre uneducated by theyre happy
