The Compulsion To Settle For Simplicity....

there is no denying that as a native
i think like a native

am no Englishman from
London Bridge
but a Bisayan from
Mindanao,

as such, i have no choice
but just to be myself,
in the utter simplicity of my language
translating myself
word by word in the nuances of
your Anglo-American world,

there is this attempt to be a part of
your world

did they say that Enlightenment?
that Genius of ideas
is only possible in your world
and not in the
land of my ancestors who know
nothing but only about spices and
spears and arrows and
jugs of wine and tattoos and
barbaric songs?

let me say what i want to say
in a few vocabularies
you may not listen, but at least
i have spoken.

I am thus compelled for that
simplicity that allows me to write this way.

Because i have nothing more
to offer you

Because what i have is only this
insistence to open my heart
and speak
what little love is still
left in there.

Speak The Word

Unsettled hearts
Promise what they cant deliver
Bring me the wine
And the cold night air to clear my head
Gray matter memory house
Master of this trembling flesh
Steady still my doubts
Let me speak the word that precedes bliss
Let me speak the word
Let me speak the word
Love love love love love love love love
Let me speak the word
Let me speak the word
Love love love love love love love love
Let me speak the word
Let me speak the word
Let me speak the word
Let me speak the word
These weakened knees
Have not touched ground or pew in ages
I havent bowed my head
I offer thanks to any God or to ask for favors
But watch me now
Im falling down
Praying
To speak the word that precedes bliss
To speak the word
To speak the word
Love love love love love love love love
Let me speak the word
Let me speak the word
Love love love love love love love love
Let me speak the word
Let me speak the word

From Worlds Within My Dreams

I feel a kindred with you,
My native...
Land.
And brethren of spoken tongues.
Those of my ancestors,
Every one.
I feel a kindred with you,
My native...
Home I've come to know.

I feel the wind coming to sweep,
And stir the prairies.
I see the tumbleweed roll.
And swirls of dust enfold it!

I feel the rhythm with each drum beat.
I paint those symbols I see,
From skies above.
And when they land,
We beings meet.
We greet as if lost souls.

I feel a kindred with you,
My native...
From worlds within my dreams you've come.
To me and others who have not succumbed...
With misgivings of a tortured faith.
Never in doubt but sometimes clouded!

I feel a kindred with you,
My native...
Land.
And brethren of spoken tongues.
Those of my ancestors,
Every one.
I feel a kindred with you,
My native...
Home I've come to know,
From worlds within my dreams.

Change The World

Imagine a place only your soul can vision
The heart of a child who looks, sees, and listens
Paints a picture using every color
And what she sees she sees it like no other
One word, a voice unheard
You can Change The World
With everything I know your made of
One word, a voice unheard
You can Change The World
If everyone would stop and listen
The art of innocence makes so much sense
Of a place there no wrong has well then it's wasted
Filtered through the eyes of a pure mind
A one of a kind, paradise for you and I, you and I
One word, a voice unheard
You can Change The World
With everything I know your made of
One word, a voice unheard
You can Change The World
If everyone would stop and listen
Break the cycle, find your rhythm
Share the gift that you've been given - Love
You can, You can Change The World
You can Change The World with love
One word, a voice unheard
You can Change The World
With everything I know your made of
One word, a voice unheard
You can Change The World
If everyone would stop and listen
One word, a voice unheard
You can Change The World
With everything I know your made of

If everyone would stop and listen

You are afraid

To write in English is your burden
You fear the grammar of the white man
You are afraid of its intricacies

why?

because your heart is not?

don't mind it, you simply want to share with full respect
to use their language

you could have used your own and be smooth with its facilities
but you also want to be a part of this world

to think american to speak english

who know if
He finds your poem good
Enough if
He feels the beating in your heart that
There is a flow
Of gladness
In your own way of being a part of this humanity that
There is joy
In your outlook that
You have a certain projection
About love sickness death redemption life

who knows?

Honestly
Now go
Write the language where you are
At home
Write the meaning of your riddles
At your convenience
Do not be afraid of English or Indian
Strictures
do not be afraid to commit mistakes
do not be afraid to go to prison

You will speak your language
You will sing your own song

you have been in this prison

for how long?

Lullaby of my native mother

Lullaby of my native mother

Aahraro Aahraro My dear son
You are born to rule this land
with love and everlasting peace
Aahraro Aahraro My dear love
sleep my son by closing your floral eye lids
to work for this land and to your people
Aahraro Aahraro My Sweet honey
Talk my son to write many new epics
for enriching your mother tongue
Aahraro Aahraro My beloved soul
play my son with lions and tigers
to fight with the cruels and devils
for establishing the empire of peace
Aahraro Aahraro My rising sun
wake up my son from this bed of poverty
to pave the way to our prosperity
Aahraro Aahraro My sweet memories
work for peace of this world
to raise this world as heaven
Aahraro Aahraro My dream product
work in the fields as much as possible to you
to eradicate hungry from this world
Aahraro Aahraro now you sleep my son
to realize all these in your life
Now You Sleep my son as a sleeping Ocean

[Aahraro Is a word Used by our native mothers to make their children to sleep]

Native American

I am native american
Ho ka hey wah nah (steven and bruce)
Ho ka hey wah nah woh
Ho ka hey wah nah
Ho ka hey wah nah woh
Ho ka hey wah nah
Ho ka hey wah nah woh
(editors note: the above is war cry of the lakota(sioux) meaning
Lets go - now)
Life was forever when we were young (steven)
The land was protected for everyone (bruce)
Forever as long as the rivers run (both)
But now the water no longer comes (steven)
And now all that remains (both)
Is darkness a poisoned earth
And now before its too late
We must provide our own new birth
Chorus:
I am native american
I am native american
The question of honor you must decide (bruce)
The soul of the nation has been denied (steven)
Our dreams have been stolen before our eyes (both)
How do you say theres no tomorrow to a child? (bruce)
>from us there is much to learn (both)
There is so much youve forgotten
You cant change me
Try and understand I am proud of who I am
Chorus:
I am native american
I am native american
We must try and remember what were here for (steven)
You will suffer the darkness alone no more (bruce)
You will have the strength of all of us
Gathered here today (both)
That is something they can never take away (bruce)
Chorus:
I am native american
I am native american
Ho ka hey wah nah (steven and bruce)
Ho ka hey wah nah woh
Repeat 7 more times til fade

Red With Native Blood

Give them back their bloody land,
red with native blood.
We have soiled it so, with our hands,
red with native blood.
The earth was stained, when we first came,
red with native blood.
We stole their domain, with a barbaric claim:
that we were civilised and they were not,
that they were the savages and we were not,
when we ravaged the land that began to clot,
red with native blood.

Not content with genocide
we interned them in reserves.
To break their culture
and tribal ways;
in stealing children
the state was brave,
to turn their women
into household slaves,
and hope their men would die,
unmourned, in lonely graves;
a problem to us no more.

Give them back their bloody land,
red with native blood.
Acknowledge their just demands,
wash the stains from our hands,
give them back their bloody land,
red with native blood.

All Over The World

Everybody all around the world
Gotta tell you what I just heard
There's gonna be a party all over the world
I got a message on the radio
But where it came from I don't really know
And I heard these voices calling all over the world
All over the world,
Everybody got the word
Everybody everywhere is gonna feel tonight
Everybody walkin' down the street
Everybody movin' to the beat
They're gonna get hot down in the U.S.A.
(New York, Detroit, L.A.)
We're gonna take a trip across the sea
Everybody come along with me
We're gonna hit the night down in gay Pareee
All over the world,
Everybody got the word
Everybody everywhere is gonna feel tonight
(Instrumental break)
London, Hamburg, Paris, Rome, Rio, Hong Kong, Tokyo
L.A., New York, Amsterdam, Monte Carlo, Shard End and
All over the world,
Everybody got the word
Everybody everywhere is gonna feel tonight
Everybody all around the world
Gotta tell you what I just heard
Everybody walkin' down the street
I know a place where we all can meet
Everybody gonna have a good time
Everybody will shine till the daylight
All over the world,
Everybody got the word
Everybody everywhere is gonna feel tonight
All over the world
Everybody got the word
All over the world
Everybody got the word
All over the world
Everybody got the word

The Black Bordered Letter

An’ SO ’e’s dead in London,
An’ answered to the call,
An’ trotted through the Long Street,
With ’earse an’ plumes an’ all?
We was village boys an’ brothers—
We was warm as we could be,
In the milk-walk an’ the fried fish,
Up in London, ’im an’ me.
We was warm,
We was warm,
As we ’ad always been;
We never ’ad a dry word
Till she come between.

I lived round Windsor Terrace,
An’ ’im across the wye,
An’ when I sailed a emigrant
We never said good-bye!
He wos better than a brother—
Wot you Bushmen call a mate.
(Did he reach the rylwye stytion,
As they told me, just too late!)

We was warm,
We was warm,
As pals was ever seen;
We never ’ad a dry word
Till she come between.

I meant to go back ’ome again,
I meant to write to-night;
I meant to write by every mail,
But I thought ’e oughter write.
An’ now ’e’s left North London—
For a better place, perhaps—
She’s flauntin’ in ’er widder weeds,
With eyes on other chaps.

We was warm,
We was warm,
As we ’ad always been;
We never ’ad a dry word
Till she come between.

Oh! tongues is bad in wimmin,
When wimmin’s tongues is bad!
For they’ll part men an’ brothers
World oceans wide, my lad!
There was seven years between us,
An’ fifteen thousand mile,
An’ now there’s death an’ sorrer
For ever an’ awhile.

We was warm,
We was warm,
As two was ever seen;
We never ’ad a dry word
Till she come between.

Color My World

Ohhh no
Everybody needs affection
Looking for a deep connection
So put a little bit of love in my life today
Everybody needs some shelter
Let's spend a little time together
Come into my arms
Let them tell you what I wanna say
Color my world
Draw on my heart
Take a picture of what you think of love
Looks like in your imagination
Write on my soul everything you know
Use every word you ever heard
To color my world
Yeah yeah
I've had enough of not believing
Living life without a meaning
I want something real
And I feel it when I'm next to you
Let's vow to have some love and devotion
Winner to my heart's emotions
Until the very end
It's the place I'm gonna keep you in
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Color my world
Draw on my heart
Take a picture of what you think of love
Looks like in your imagination
Write on my soul everything you know (no no)
Use every word that you ever heard
To color my world
Color my world
Yeah
Let's make a world for you and me yeah
That we're never gonna leave (yeahh)
Color my world (why won't you color my world?)
Draw on my heart (yeahh)
Take a picture of what you think of love
Looks like in your imagination
Write on my soul (write on my soul) everything you know
Use every word you ever heard
To color my world (color my world)
Oooh ooh (oh no no)
Won't you do it?
Won't you color my world?
Oooh ooh (ooh ooh)
Oooh ooh (ooh ooh)
Use every word you ever heard
To color my world
Everybody needs affection
Looking for a deep connection
Ohhh
Color my world

New Beginning

hand me down some photographs
spread across the floor
a broken record spins in circles
she can't listen anymore
she's turned around a thousand times
she set that bridge a fire

but did you wanna listen
you took the world with you
so what is left
so what is left for me

i called you on the phone again
just the other day
it sounds to me you found your place
and everything is great

but did you wanna listen
you took the world with you
so what is left
so what is left for me

i try
so hard to figure out
why
no explanation keeps me waiting
lets try
because i know you won't forget
i know
even if the story is over

but did you wanna listen
you took the world with you
so what is left for me
so what is left for me

but did you wanna listen
you took the world with you
so what is left
so what is left for me

what's left for me

Half Breed (Who I Am)

Do not judge or condemn me
for this is who I am
I'm exactly who our Creator
said He wanted me to be
creating me into this man
out of his own image He made me

Through His eye's He made me see
and gave me but only one destiny
one that I know I must journey
it was all part of His plan
to make me just who I am
a half breed Native American

My blood flows of my ancestors
on their path I will walk forever
with my heart pure and strong
and wisdom to know right from wrong
it beats the drum of their song
not as a full blood Indian
but a half breed Native American

Elegance of language may not be in the power of all of us; but simplicity and straight forwardness are. Write much as you would speak; speak as you think. If with your inferior, speak no coarser than usual; if with your superiors, no finer. Be what you say; and, within the rules of prudence, say what you are.

A Fine Culture

They were indeed simple people
the people of the east
A FINE CULTURE they did have
the people of the east

A FINE CULTURE
the east should have given the rest
when the west brought out the 'machine'
the east brought out the 'human'

Today's world is not lacking in machine
Today's world is lacking in human

Today's east is sending 'productive men' all over
the east should have sent 'human men' all over
How did the east stray?
when did it loose it's way?

The east then found everything in simplicity
simplicity was it's strength and beauty
simplicity gave the east it's integrity
simplicity never ever gave the east an inferiority

Today the east mocks the west
the 'material' wealth of the west..has
put to rest...the
true spirit of the east

We blame it on simplicity
we say we were plundered due to our simplicity
a handed down book on simplicity
only became a liability..we say

What the west had gained
everybody did gain...the 'machine'
what the east had lost
everbody did loose...the 'human'

Today what are we in
an 'un human' man is managing a dangerous dumb 'machine'...and
THAT'S THE DANGER WE ARE IN...without
a fine culture

Listen

Whats it like to play a part?
Whats it like to have a wooden heart?
Every word you say is so rehearsed
You think your clothes and actions control the universe
Listen, what youd better do
Listen, better change your head
Listen, or theres nothing we can do
Listen to the one who will change your world
Youre the face upon a playing card
A coloured painted cold visage
[youre] just a pawn of somebody somewhere
Only trouble is youre gonna get no-where
Listen, what youd better do
Listen, better change your head
Listen, or theres nothing we can do
Listen to the one who will change your world
Whats it like to play a part?
[you] got a wooden heart
[youre] just a puppet on a string
A nothing, a no-one, no style
[you] just play a part
[youre] just a pawn of someone somewhere
And youll get no-where
Listen what youd better do
Listen, better change your head

Gonna change your world
Gonna change your world

Look Through Any Doorway (alternate Take)

Look through any doorway,
Each life will tell its story.
See the joy and heartbreak,
For all the world to see.
Shes on the city streets,
On her face is desolation.
Just a kid from out of town,
In the land of hope and glory.
Look through any doorway,
Each life will tell its story.
See the joy and heartbreak,
For all the world to see.
Open up your heart.
Open up the highway,
The road will stretch before you,
For there will be a new day,
Where love will show the way.
Only shadows of the world we left behind,
Open up your heart,
Many shadows of the past, so dont look back.
Look at the wars,
A part of greed affects us all
Theres a better way, despite what they do or say,
People of the world.
Look through any doorway,
Tell me what you see.
Open up your heartache,
And love will show the way.
Searching for the way,
Through all the doubt and sorrow.
Days turn into years,
But well build a new tomorrow.
Look through any doorway,
Each life will bear its treasure.
Open up your heartache,
And love will show the way.
All the shadows of the world we left behind,
Open up your heart.
Many shadows of the past, so dont look back,
Open up your heart.
Open up your heart.
Look through any doorway,
Tell me what you see.
Look through any doorway.
